College Students Agenda
Session Description:
A healthcare workforce that identifies with the experiences and social context of
patient health is essential to a thriving health system that meets the needs of all
patients. However, since 1974, the number of black males applying to medical
school has not increased significantly. Following the AAMC’s Altering the
Course: Black Men in Medicine report, we want to continue the work of
increasing black men in medicine by sharing stories from black male physicians
and medical students currently crafting their own pathway through medicine.
During this session, our panelists will share their experiences in navigating the
medical field, address anxieties created due to low minority representation, and
discuss the impact it has on patient care in their community.
At the conclusion of the session, we will host an optional mentoring session
concurrently with the recruitment fair so that students have a chance to talk one
on one with our mentors at the Representation Matters Mentoring session at 1:00
PM EST. Join us in hearing from medical students, physicians and clinicians
currently in the medicine and health sciences for a dialogue on:
Sharing experiences of Black medical students, and physicians
Discussing resiliency strategies and the importance of supportive, mentoring
networks
Taking questions and hearing from the next generation of physician leaders

My most vivid memory of the program was being around people who looked and thought like me. It was the most ‘at home’ I’d felt with a group of people. It made me see where I could fit into medicine. It showed me I could be a doctor. They helped reinforce in me that there was every reason I should enroll in medical school.
