Meeting at TJC West December 10, 2016
The Prez says:My last Prez column – I haven’t minded doing the columns, but I can’t say I will miss doing them! It has been aprivilege serving as president of this great organization thelast two years and I trust you will support the incomingpresident in similar fashion.
A major factor in ETW’s continuing success is a strongsteering committee – we meet five times a year with faithfulattendance from current and past officers along withindividual contributors (by the way, any ETW member canattend these meetings).
An equally important factor in ETW’s continuing success is the non-officer backbone offolks who take care of set-up, take-down, raffle tickets, taking pictures, audio-visual,newspaper editing, MOST, ETW member profiles, the ETW web page, and the ETWFacebook page.
The 2017 officer changes are Worth Holmes as president and Bill Preston as vicepresident – all other officers are unchanged. With Ed’s retirement, Mark Harrison will takeover audio-visual chores and I will take care of getting the audio-visual equipment to themeetings. As always, please consider volunteering when opportunities arise!
Thanks to the many folks who help out consistently: Ed Heuslein, Marvin Cade, BillPreston, Don Cutler, Dennis Ford, Nancy MacKinnon, Kelvin Burton, Paul Coppinger,Mike DeLong, Wayne Smith, and Bobby Barron. As always, there are those volunteerswho are unnamed – THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
I wanted to especially recognize Keith and Krysabelle Gilbert for preparing our Christmasparty food again this year – this is a labor of love on their part – thank you!And I have to thank Ed again for his 17 years of audio-visual service – thank you! (Ed hasinformed me, however, that he will continue his role as Mr. PITA at the steering committeemeetings).Service highlights this year include those turned tops both for Mineola Naturefest and forToys for Tots (total of about 400 tops plus a few toys) and pens turned for CombatVeterans (look for a picture at the party). THANK YOU!

Editor's Show & Tell Highlight
What I liked about these pieces:
* Choice of wood and inlay material, the inlay workswell with the interesting woods
* Smooth finish (not everything needs to be high gloss)
* Simple shape with limited beads and coves allows thewood to be the primary feature

DISK SANDPAPER HOLDER
Tired of looking through drawers, boxes, etc. for the right sanding disk? Take a look at what I made to resolve thatproblem. This disk holder holds 1”, 2”, and 3” sanding disks as well as the sanding pads. With a little imaginationyou can easily modify this to fit your needs.Basically, it’s made from scrap 2x4 material that I had laying around. The backing and end pieces are scrap plywood. But, they’re necessary to hold things together and to mount to a wall. The holes are drilled with the appropriate sized Forstner drill bits. Make sure to measure carefully and drill so that thehole overlaps the outside edge of the 2x4 so you can easily take individual disks out.I use nuts (1” holes) and washers (2” & 3” holes) to hold the sandpaper down. What you see on the tops of thewashers are used disks that still have useful life left in them.

Member ProfileBRUCE IRWIN
By Bill Preston
As I interview club members and obtain information for their profile stories not only am I able to learn more about one ofour members but I also get to see parts of East Texas I have not seen before and probably never would if it were not forthese articles. This month I traveled to the north end of Cedar Creek Lake in Kaufman County to visit with Bruce Irwinfor an interview and to see his shop and how it was equipped….Wow! It was a real treat. His shop and setup was one ofthe cleanest and most organized of any I have seen, but what would one expect from an electrical engineer. To digress amoment, Marvin Cade’s shop which I visited last month was also one of the best I have seen and several others have beenso as well….every member’s shop is special to them, some are just a bit cleaner and better organized than others or at leastit seems that way to me.
Bruce Irwin was born and grew up in Kansas on the outskirts ofKansas City. His father and later his mother both worked for acompany in the city. Bruce said his heritage is from norther Irelandwhere his last name begins with I as compared to other parts of Irelandwhere the name is with an E (Erwin). Bruce is an only child and afterhigh school he attended Kansas State University and graduated in 1959with a Degree in Electrical Engineering. His first and only employerwas the Dallas based Collins Radio (later Rockwell International)where he worked for 33 years designing microwave relay systems formilitary aircraft. Initially he was assigned to a Collins facility in CedarRapids, Iowa but after several months he was transferred to the Dallaslocation.During his career with Collins he owned homes in Garland, Plano, andDallas.
Bruce’s wife of 36 years is Dorothy (Dot) and between them theyhave 4 children – 4 girls and 6 grandchildren ranging in ages from4 to 24. Two of their children and families live in Dallas, one inHouston, and one in Tampa, Florida. Quite a large group when they
gather for a family event. Bruce retired early (age 55) and in 1992 he and Dot built their first lake house on Cedar Creekusing it from time to time as a place to escape the traffic and noise of the city. They enjoyed the quiet and peaceful lakeenvironment so much they decided to permanently relocate and in 2003 built their current home in the Cedar CreekCountry Club subdivision on the north end of the lake. The home was carefully designed by Bruce and is of a beautifulcontemporary style with high ceilings, open spaces, and a wonderful view across the lake. Because of the smaller lot sizesand for other reasons Bruce attached his shop directly to the house and was able to use the house’s heating and a/c system
in the shop, and he can enter the shop from the house. The shop also hasa double door entry to the outside which is visible in one of the photos.
Bruce began learning wood working skills at an early age from hisgrandfather and Bruce still has some of his grandfather’s hand toolstoday. Bruce had several years of woodworking shop classes in schoolplus he learned construction carpentry from an uncle who was a homebuilder.A few years after arriving in Dallas he found time to hone his woodworking skills by designing and making a variety of classic furniturepieces – tables, chairs, lamps, bookcases, and similar items. In 2003Bruce acquired his first lathe which he continues to use today – a midsizeDelta with a belt drive motor rather than a direct drive. Bruce says thebelt drive has too much vibration at times and he would not buy anotherone, but it generally works fine for most of the items he makes.

Tom and Marjorie
He learned the basics of turning producing small bowls and boxes fromgreen wood. By 2010 he had learned the techniques of segmentedturning which is where he now spends most of his shop/woodturningtime. He walked me through the process of producing a segmentedpiece and I learned how precise the cutting, the gluing, and the clampingmust be in order to complete and attractive piece. During the past 6years Bruce has made many beautiful turnings with elaborate andintricate designs. He joined the ETWT club in 2013 and enjoys comingto the meetings even though he travels some distance to be there.
As with every interview, I increased my knowledge of woodturningfrom a skilled craftsman who graciously shared his time and talent –what he has learned over the years – with one who is still a novice, butlearning from others is one of the great reasons for joining a woodturning club. I am thankful Bruce is a part of the group, and I too amglad to be a member. I hope all members have a blessed Christmas andNew Year season.
Christmas Party December 10thWe will not have “Show & Tell” this month butwill have a display table. Please bring someitems to show (even if you have brought thembefore).
