A New Music Director!
We are pleased to announce that Valerie D. Thorson has accepted our
invitation to serve as our next Director of Music at Christ Church
Episcopal. Valerie is currently the Assistant Organist at St. Paul’s
Episcopal Church in Akron. Prior to her work at St. Paul’s, Valerie was
the Director of Music and the Musical Arts at First Congregational
Church in Akron. Valerie has taught organ at The College of Wooster,
and both voice and organ at the University of Akron.
Valerie writes, “It is with great joy, humility and
enthusiasm that I accept the call to come to Christ
Church as your next Organist/Choirmaster. I have
the greatest respect for the gifted musicians who
have come before me and promise to faithfully up-
hold and, to the best of my ability, expand the
musical ministry and outreach of the church in the
local community and beyond.”
Valerie will begin her work at Christ Church on August 28 and her first
Sunday with us will be September 3. Mary Ann Switz will continue to
serve as Interim Organist through Sunday, August 27, for which we are
deeply grateful.
Please join us in welcoming Valerie to Christ Church!

Dear Friends,
One of our goals at Christ Church this year is to increase our visibility in the community. This goal was
articulated over and over again last summer in our “Meet and Greets” and the vestry reaffirmed that goal
as we made the 2017 budget.
We have made some good progress in this department. Our presence in the Memorial Day parade,
compline on the Green, Pub Theology, my time at the Open Door Coffee Company, our Sunday afternoon
public forums, and some work to make our garden a more attractive spot for people to relax are all part of
this effort.
I think our efforts are paying off in the increase in visitors we have seen on Sunday mornings this summer.
As I write this, I am just back from vacation. Having been gone for two Sundays, I can’t speak for the
most recent past, but up through July 2, we had guests every Sunday this summer. I would like to think
that our increased visibility has helped draw people to Christ Church.
Whatever the reason our guests visit Christ Church, even more important is to provide our guests with a
reason to return. And here is where each and every one of us can make a difference. The number one,
most important thing we can all do to help our guests make a home at Christ Church is simply to be here
on Sunday morning. When guests walk in and the pews are full, the singing is great, the energy is high,
and children are visible, a good (and correct) impression is made. When our guests encounter people at
Christ Church who really want to get to know them and hear their stories, our guests are valued for who
they are as individuals.
Study after study shows that people are not looking for more things to do. But people are looking for ways
to connect with fellow travelers and ways to find meaning in their lives. August is a time when people are
often looking for a new church, perhaps having moved over the summer. Our goal as we bring the summer
to a close (and always) is to offer our very best selves to those who come looking for a place to connect
with God and fellow pilgrims. And the great news is that 90% of offering our very best selves is simply
showing up!
See you Sunday!

Children’s Corner
Children’s Chapel is still going strong!
We have a good handful of kids coming
each week. We are using the Godly
Play curriculum, which uses Montessori based teaching
and learning strategies, and have moved from the study
of the Parables of Jesus to the major characters of the
Old Testament, such as Sarah, Ruth, and David. It has
been great fun. I invite you to check it out for yourself
as a helper any Sunday and get to know the amazing
kids we have here at Christ Church!
On August 20th, we will kick off the school year with
a Family Fun Night! The event will go from 6:30-8:00.
There will food and an activity as well as the chance to
provide your vision for our Children’s and Youth
Ministries at CCE!

Thank you to….
…..The Rev. Allan Belton for serving as our supply
priest during Charlotte’s vacation;
…..Mary Ann Switz for her ongoing work as our
interim organist;
…..all who have been working diligently to keep our
memorial garden and grounds beautiful.
Dear Members of Christ Church,
Thank you for your generous
donation from the Good Friday
Service. Your willingness to
contribute to Hudson Ministerial
Association will support those in need who reach
out to the churches in the Hudson area.
Sincerely,
Rose Gordyan, Hudson Ministerial Association.
Dear Loyal Supporters of Habitat:
We were so pleased to receive your generous contribution!
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the families served
by Habitat for Humanity, please accept this letter of thanks
and acknowledgement for your contribution of $1,000.00.
Your gift is helping support the operations of construction
and building of the Hudson Coalition sponsored home.
We are in our 31st year of building neighborhoods.
We continue to demonstrate an improved quality of life
in the communities where we serve. We could not do this
work without the support of organizations like yours to
further our mission and help more families and neighbor-
hoods in need.
Thank you again for your support.
Sincerely,
Jim Sukys
Vice President & COO
With assistance from Ginger Rogers and Katie Coulton,
directors of The Priscilla Graham Fund, Christ Church was
awarded a $4000 grant by the fund, which is part of the Akron
Community Foundation. This grant was awarded to support the
repair of the front columns on Beebe House. The work on the
columns is being done by The Morgan Valley Construction
Company, with an estimated completion by Labor Day.
Pictured are The Rev. Charlotte Collins Reed and Senior Warden,
Lou Young, accepting the check from Katie Coulton and Ginger
Rogers. A special thank you to Ginger, Katie and the Foundation
for their generous gift!
For Lovers of a Weed Free Landscape
We are making great strides in the Memorial
Garden, thanks to the plot volunteers and the
wonderful hard work of Susan BreMiller.
In a further effort, and in keeping with our “200”
theme, we are looking to get volunteers to sign
up for 200 “30 minute weeding blitzes” over
the balance of the summer (12 weeks).
Here’s how you can help:
1). Sign up in Parish Hall for the number of 30
minute segments that you are willing to
contribute through the end of October.
2). Show up whenever it fits your schedule,
preferably after it rains.
3). Pull weeds in any of the beds noted in Red
on the plot plan and dispose of in the garbage
dumpster in the parking lot (not the recycle
bin). Thank you in advance for your help!

The vestry met in a special meeting on Tuesday, July 25. The purpose of the meeting was to decide on a consultant for the upcoming Capital Campaign. The decision was made to enter into a contract with Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF) for the first of the three phases of the campaign with the intent to contract with ECF for all three phases of the project. Each phase is contracted separately at the completion of the prior phase. More information about the Capital Campaign coming soon!
The next vestry meeting is on Tuesday, August 22 at 7:15 p.m.
in the Christ Church library.
