Did you know that Dolly Parton sang on the Apollo 11 lunar mission? Each of the three astronauts aboard the mission were allowed to bring a cassette tape of songs. Charlie Duke asked a disc jockey friend to put together a cassette of country music. On his first listen, Duke was shocked to hear the voice of country music legend Porter Wagoner address the three astronauts by name and then perform a series of songs with his band and a young singer by the name of Dolly Parton. At one point, Dolly told the crew, “I’m sure during this historic Apollo flight you’ll see many, many beautiful scenes … which I’m sure as you view them you’ll think of God, the Creator of this great universe.” She went on to sing a beautiful rendition of “How Great Thou Art.” Charlie Duke heard the message of that song on the journey that would have him spend nearly 72 hours on the surface of the moon, sometimes gazing back at the Earth dangling in the dis- tance. “O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds thy hands have made. I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed…” These words meant much more to Charlie Duke, however, years after he walked on the moon. As a former astronaut with a struggling marriage, Duke confesses that he and his wife did not have a personal relationship with God. It wasn’t until his wife returned from a weekend church conference having asked Jesus into her life, that God got his attention. He watched as his wife changed from sadness to joy. Two years later, Duke went to a Bible study where he became con- vinced that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and Savior of sinners. He has been a believer ever since. Sometimes Charlie Duke pulls that old cassette tape out and listens. A prized souvenir from space with a message he hears in a new way. Duke likes to quote from Job when he reflects on his time in space, “He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing.” Take it from a moon walker who believes that God is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. He says, “The evidence to me is overwhelming that there’s a Creator. The orderliness in the universe and the physical laws that we experience – I see God’s hand in creation. That can’t happen by accident.” (Quotes and facts taken from “A Man over the Moon,” an article by Jamie Dean for World Magazine – July 20, 2019)

THE MESSENGER of Quaker Gap Baptist Church - King, NC

A WORD FROM PASTOR JACK…

He Hangs the Earth on Nothing On July 20th, we commemorated the 50th anniver-sary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing. At one point, Dolly told the crew, “I’m sure

during this historic Apollo flight you’ll see many, many beautiful scenes … which I’m sure as you view them you’ll think of God, the Creator of this great universe.” She went on to sing a beautiful rendition of “How Great Thou Art.”

Charlie Duke heard the message of that song on the journey that would have him spend nearly 72 hours on the surface of the moon, sometimes gazing back at the Earth dangling in the dis-tance.

Two years later, Duke went to a Bible study where he became con-vinced that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and Savior of sinners.

That can’t happen by accident.”

THE MESSENGER 3 AUGUST 2019

“6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified be-

cause of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will nev-er leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

“Hello-oh. Where are you? Now, I see you! What are you doing? Come on, talk to me. Give me something. I’m look-ing at you. I need some answers and I’m getting nothing! Hello-oh. I’m looking for something that is not where it should be and you, yes, you are doing nothing to help the situation! Somebody had better get their act together because I’ve been flying around

back and forth to this back porch for a couple days now and I’ve still got nothing to show for it.” In this particular case the lecture is being directed at me from a ruby-throated hummingbird

that Amy and I have affectionately named “Red.” As Red hovered in front of our back door, he turned just enough so that he was staring at me through the glass with one eye towards me prompt-ing the humorous albeit imaginary address above. We have had the pleasure of Red’s visits for the last 4 or 5 years when we put hummingbird feeders all around our front and back porches. This year, our hummingbird feeders are carefully and neatly packed away somewhere in our garden shed that is also doubling for storage while we are undergoing some home improvements. And so a fa-miliarity was established to the point that expectations were established but unfortunately, disap-pointments delivered. Thus, our dilemma. I’m not sure where that box of feeders is and, I’m not sure I could get to them if I did know where. Red is not amused!

What about me? Am I searching for answers, solutions, something from God? Am I asking Him for help when I’m at the end of my rope. Am I looking for food, either physical or spiritual? Am I tired and seeking rest? Scripture says that “Our God never sleeps nor slumbers!” He is our help who is watching over us day and night and caring for us. Psalm 121 states it eloquently: “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slum-ber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD watches over you—the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forever-more.” Our expectations can and should be that the Lord God Al-mighty, El Shaddai is the God who provides, Jehovah Jireh. He is our healer, Jehova-Rapha and the Lord is Peace, Jehovah Shalom. He is our Shepherd, Jehovah Raah, and our Master, Adonai. Our God is the Everlasting God, El Olam and the Most High God, El Elyon. But, un-like our hummingbird, Red, we will never be disappointed by trusting in the protection and care of our God! Perhaps I will pick up another feeder for our faithful flyer.

Soli Deo gloria, (Glory to God alone)

We appreciate all the fami-lies that have opened up their homes to our students and youth leaders. For the remaining Tour of Pools, we would like to encourage all of our students who are entering into to the seventh grade to come join us and get to know the other youth better. On Sunday, August 11th, we will meet at Shel-ter #1 at Hanging Rock State Park (near the lake) for a church/community wide event of swimming, boat-ing, hiking from 2-4:00 PM. Then at 4:00 we will gath-er back at the shelter for a hotdog cookout provided by our Children & Youth Ministries. Invite your friends, neighbors, and relatives to join us for this fun afternoon together before our students head back to school.
