In many ways, design is a perfect world with no physical problems. But the real world sometimes makes a hash of even the most elegant and well-considered designs. In this talk, Lew Harriman discusses the practical aspects of what to do when things are going wrong with humidity control. Based on his 35 years of experience with designing, diagnosing and fixing humidity control problems in buildings of all types, this talk is focused on what to do when “That ¡¡#xx%§z@!! humidity problem has to be fixed before the end of the week!!”

  • Energy Trivia: On average, 10 gallons per day of your water footprint (or 14% of your indoor use) is lost to leaks. Short of installing new water-efficient fixtures, one of the easiest, most effective ways to cut your footprint is by repairing leaky faucets and toilets. If you use a low-flow showerhead, you can save 15 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower.a

Every time you shave minutes off your use of hot water, you also save energy and keep dollars in your pocket.a

    a .

Energy Conservation Tip: Save energy by letting your dishes and clothes air dry instead of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle and your laundry dryer. As we look forward to the spring season and getting our house in order with the traditional “spring cleaning”, let’s be mindful of conserving water and energy by washing only full loads of dishes and clothes.

Mark your calendars, the 2015 Technical Seminar event is set! We have reserved the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki for March, 13 2015. The seminar theme is Indoor Air Quality. The quality of indoor air inside offices, schools, and other workplaces is important not only for workers' comfort but also for their health. Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) has been tied to symptoms like headaches, fatigue, trouble concentrating, and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Also, some specific diseases have been linked to specific air contaminants or indoor environments, like asthma with damp indoor environments. The four presenters will speak on the causes and effects of poor IAQ and methods to improve it. The seminar will be from 8:00 am until 3:45 pm in the Haleakala/Kilauea Banquet room. A Continental Breakfast will be served in the morning. Lunch will be buffet style at the hotel’s Prince Court Buffet. The technical seminar will be followed by a cocktail reception in the Marina Front Lounge (Hawaii Prince 1st floor), which gives you the opportunity to mingle with the presenters, ASHRAE members, and guests. We hope that all of you will come out to join us and support the ASHRAE technical seminar!

Dr. Max Sherman will pre-sent on “Why we Ventilate” to discuss his current work at the Lawrence Berkley Labs to develop a health-based ventilation standard. Dr. Sherman is a Senior Scien-tist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with over 30 years of experience in building physics. He has a Ph.D. in physics from Berke-ley and is an international expert in air leakage, HVAC, indoor air quality, infiltration,

moisture, energy efficiency, and related topics.
