Individual design, with price certainty

No two the same

Each of the houses shown here is different to all the others. They have different owners,

at different life stages, with different household arrangements, and are built on different

sites with different orientations.

Common attributes

Each of these houses has shared attributes too. Each one was individually designed to

an individual brief. Each one was optimally designed to the contours of its site, the path

of the sun across that site, the retention where possible of existing trees, and the best

possible capture of available views. Each met the distinct needs of its owners.

Price certainty

Here’s something very different. In all cases, the owners knew the price of construction

before they were required to make any significant financial commitments.

How did they have this price certainty—for individual design?

Because they worked with experienced design professionals who fully understood house

construction; design professionals embedded within a reputable builder. They worked

with Fasham.

A Better Way

Fasham’s Brian Stacey and Rodney Smith are highly experienced residential designers.

With over 70 years between them in design-and-build roles they have a comprehensive

knowledge of house construction techniques, materials and timelines. They know when

there is a better way; where that ‘better way’ may, for example, save energy costs,

introduce more light, shorten construction time or allow reductions in the budget.

Fasham is, in effect, a professional design studio within a building company. This structure

ensures that all designs are ‘buildable’ for the quoted price, as all plans are estimated

within Fasham before being presented to the client.

Designer sensibilities

But are they good designers? At the risk of stating the obvious we could observe that

you don’t make it as designers, in any field, without having keen design sensibilities. And

you don’t build the reputation that Fasham has built over its forty years, without being

very good designers indeed.

But, as the saying goes, don’t listen to us. We suggest that you go to www.fasham.com.au

and listen to people who really know.

Rachel Berger’s new column Ironic Iconic » P8

R ight, so where was I? Oh yes: when last you heard from your correspondent, she was moving a little slowly and warbling on about embracing the chaos that would certainly come with the arrival of a little

one. Enter Addison Marcello, a fine young boy of good size, and did someone mention chaos? My goodness – be careful what you wish for!

Now, before my fearsome editor, and many of you, start grumbling about me turning into a “mummy blogger”, as one Twitter follower darkly warned me against, let me be clear: this column is not for the mummies out there. They know this stuff already. It’s fair enough that you might not want to read all about a new mother’s world, so instead today’s column is for the rest of you: you who don’t have children, don’t want children, or who might have had children so long ago that you’ve forgotten the overwhelming nature of the experience. Not part of the whole mummy thing? OK – then this is what your role should be instead.

Hillary Clinton was right: it really does take a village to raise a child, except that we don’t connect with each other as villagers any more, and if I’ve learnt anything in the past eight weeks it’s that life is easier, better and simply happier if we do. The pocket-sized guide below applies not just to the family of a newborn, but to friends who are unwell or infirm; to those who are alone and lonely; to mates who are having a hard time or to families who are struggling. The message is that you simply can’t help enough – and every tiny morsel of your help will be more deeply appreciated than you can imagine.

A short visit is a good visit: When you’re with a new arrival, or struggling with an illness, no one wants an hour-long visit when there are nappies to be changed or bed beckons. If you are offered a cup of tea, decline: they’re only being polite

and they don’t have the energy to make it for you. The fact that you thought to show up, offer love and a kiss is enough. Now it’s time to go home.

Bring food: I remember, when I was young, how common this was in my parish with those who needed help, and I will forever remember those who stopped by in the first days with a pot of soup, a casserole for the freezer. One long-time friend kept me fed with traditional Chinese postnatal foods for one month – “Now you’re on your own!” – and my gratitude was limitless. Cooking is that last thing you feel you can do in this state. We should be doing this often, when friends are tired, overwhelmed or unwell. The care and ease that it brings is immeasurable.

Be the magic kitchen fairy: I reckon we all need this from time to time. Slip into the kitchen of your struggling friend, mother, sister, and wash, dry, clean up and sweep – and then disappear. Oh, the relief of finding the kitchen clean and one more task struck off a list that is never really completed. It means starting to talk to each other about swapping house keys and a deeper involvement in each other’s lives, which we all resist: but as we age, and hope to stay in our homes, we will have to embrace this idea. We will have to return to the village way of doing things. We have been overwhelmed by how happily and lovingly this little boy has been greeted, and all the unexpected help has made us realise how lucky we are to have the friends we do. It’s reaffirmed the importance of taking care of those in our community, and we plan to return all the favours … once this happy chaos starts to subside, just a little. \

“People are always like ‘do you

have that weird tw

in telepathy’?”

Twiceas nice

Twins can be twice as nice but double the trouble. Just ask the first boyfriends of international music sensations Liv and Mim Nervo. As teenagers, the gorgeous blonde Ivanhoe girls decided to see if they could fool their beaus, who were good mates.

“It was like school holidays and they were over at my parents’ house,” recalls Liv, now distinguished – just – by her longer locks. Mim has the cropped do. “And we switched jumpers and then one of us went and sat on the lap of the other boyfriend.

“This was a time where the extent (of physical contact) to our boyfriends was just holding hands, so that was a pretty big deal. And then of course I think he tried to hug me or something like that and I totally freaked out.”

Luckily for potential suitors the Nervo twins decided to stick to being twice as nice, concentrating instead on modelling and music. Soon after finishing school, the Genazzano FCJ College old girls established themselves as electro-pop singer-songwriters, producers and DJs.

Known as the Nervo Twins or Nervo, they have since travelled the world, collaborating with Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Hudson, Rachel Stephens, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Ke$ha, DJ/producer David Guetta, the Pussycat Dolls and Miley Cyrus. They have also worked with DJs Roger Sanchez, Armin Van Buuren, Deadmau5, Kaskade, and Laidback Luke.

In 2011 Nervo spent the US summer supporting Nicki Minaj and Britney Spears on their Femme Fatale arena tour, while jetting to Las Vegas for a monthly DJ residency with the Wynn Hotel Group. They also joined the Identity tour, the biggest travelling electronic music festival in the US.

If that wasn’t enough, last September they released their first single, We’re All No One, featuring Afrojack and Steve Aoki. Their EMI deal also enabled them to tap into their underground club scene roots and sign artists to their new imprint, Nervo Records.

Speaking by phone from LA before their recent Australian tour, a bright and bubbly Liv says being a twin has helped her cope with the rigours of the music industry, which often sees her and Mim live and work in each others’ pockets. While their connection is not quite telepathic, it is special.

“People are always like ‘do you have that weird twin telepathy’?,” she says. “We’ve never had any kind of weird (incident) … when Mim hurts her arm and I’m on the other side of the world and I’m like ‘I need to call Mim’. But we are certainly very close and can definitely get a good read of each other’s moods.

“I would say that if there’s anyone on Earth who could read Mim’s mind then I would be the closest to that and vice versa, purely because we’re really close. There’s no secrets between us. We’re always together so we kind of do know what’s coming.”

Mim and Liv are based in London, a world away way from leafy Ivanhoe, where they grew up with older sister Adele, now a Hong Kong-based mother of two, and younger brother Morris. Mum Flaviana is a dentist and dad Garry is an endodontist.

The family moved to Ivanhoe from Whittlesea about 20 years ago. Both Italian, Garry and Flaviana encouraged their daughters to be musical but didn’t think they would make a living from it. To them, a solid career had an academic base.

“Mum and dad always thought music was more of a luxury and a hobby,” Liv says. “I don’t think they thought we’d make a career out of it. There is that academic school of thought where you study and get a real job.

“(But) they were very encouraging of us to learn musical instruments. We’ve been learning piano since we were like seven years old and … we always sang. We always liked to make music. First and foremost we both really liked music. It kind of came naturally. It was just natural that we turned it into a career.”

Their Italian heritage is important. “We’re very proud that we’re Italian-Australian,” Liv says. “Our parents were … working-class immigrants that worked very hard, very moral, good people and very hard working. We speak Italian, so whenever we go to Italy that always helps. It’s definitely a part of our equation.”

Monozygotic twins share the same egg, but not always the same tastes. As a teenager, Liv liked heavier music. “I went a little bit more rock,” she says. “I kind of became obsessed with Nirvana and Pearl Jam. We had an exchange student who lived with us and she liked that kind of music so I thought she was the coolest thing ever.

Both girls, however,

loved everything from Cole Porter and Gypsy Kings to Mariah Carey, Kurt Cobain and Tom

Tom Club. After sneaking out to clubs, they gravitated towards

house music. “From when we could really get into music ourselves … we both really loved house music,” Liv says. “Mim

and I both shared our love of dance music, and that’s where we I guess started.”At 16 they were modelling when a local producer offered them a job

as demo singers. This led to songwriting, a move to London and more work. After a lean period working in a bar, things literally took off, and

they have been in demand worldwide since.Nervo toured Australia last month as DJs, and plan to spend much of the

European summer in Ibiza, the legendary party island off the coast of Spain, and in the US, spinning discs and developing their second single. “And then

I think the next time we’ll be home is over Christmas. We make it home every Christmas,” Liv says.

Liv and Mim base themselves in London largely due to the network of friends they have built up since leaving Melbourne. They love their new life but miss home.

“Oh yeah, I love Melbourne, love, love, love, love Australia,” Liv says. “We get home a few times a year, which is good. Every time we get home I realise again how much I

love the city, and that doesn’t go away. Luckily I’m busy and enjoying our work … so it doesn’t get me down, but we do love Australia, (we’re) very proud to be Australian, very proud actually to be Melburnians.

“I like the café scene, I actually think the fashion is brilliant. I just love Brunswick Street, I like St Kilda … I love Melbourne’s down-to-earth vibe. I think one thing that Australians share or Melburnians … is a very open thing. They’re open to new shows or live theatre in the Botanic Gardens, things like that. I always find when I come home there’s always something fun to do.”

They may have arrived just minutes earlier, but first-born twins often make sure everyone knows who is “older”. Not so with the Nervos. “I’m two minutes older,” Liv says. “(But) there’s no ‘respect your elders’. I don’t think it really affects who’s bossier or anything like that. We take it in turns to boss each other around.”

The twins are close but not immune to disagreement. “We get asked a lot ‘do you like being twins’, ‘do you like working with your sister, do you fight?’ and all that kind of stuff,” Liv says. “We’re normal sisters like any other sisters. We do squabble. I just think the dynamic we have … creatively in the studio it’s very free and very honest and very open.”

“We have disagreements when we’re in the studio. If we’re being creative we feel quite passionately about things, so … I might really give Mim a hard time if she’s not letting me have a go at developing an idea and vice versa. When we leave the studio it’s all over. We’re very good at dropping it, actually, and just getting on with it. If we both agree on things, it’s the biggest high ever.”

Life is full-on but Liv, who describes herself as “sort of” single, says they will find time if either meets someone special. “If one of us finds somebody that we like we call it ‘living time’,” she says. “We take time off or we go on a holiday or we try and tailor some tours around wherever they live. We’re pretty good at that.”

Garry and Flaviana, who still live in Ivanhoe, are now right behind their daughters’ careers. Flaviana travels a lot and visits the girls at least once a year.

“Now they’re happy that we’re happy and enjoying life,” Liv says. “I think when they came to see us DJ, they worked out that we could make a career out of it. I

think all parents want is for their kids to be happy in their jobs and have a little bit of financial security, so now that we’re not both waitresses I think they’re both

happy for us.”Australia has about 400,000 twins, about 2 per cent of the population. The

Nervo sisters are doing their bit for science, having been on the Australian Twin Registry since 1994. They have participated

in studies on asthma, epilepsy and understanding twin competition and comparison.

Registry marketing officer Lynette Walker says the registry has about 66,000 members and is always looking for more. “Twins

help us to better understand genetic and environmental factors in diseases from cancer to epilepsy,” Walker says. \

Giveyour child more room to grow.

A t 5pm on a grey Melbourne afternoon only months after we’d arrived in Australia, my

father slid open the passenger door of his van, told me to get in and drove all the way from Spotswood to Victoria Street in Richmond without saying a word. The move to Australia had been shattering; I had to learn English

and eat foreign foods, while my parents bought a milk bar and worked seven days a week. I was often alone and instead of playing with dolls I’d fret and wonder if anyone was ever coming back to see me again. I played with the other girls who lived in our street but the only thing they taught me was to jump over the cracks in the footpath. I still remember the words – “Step on a crack, break your mother’s back” – and this didn’t help my anxiety or the way I walked. These little vixens taught me that security and happiness hang in the most delicate balance and that unless I stay vigilant my world would certainly end in chaos. I was six.

As my father drove slowly up Victoria Street in the dusky half-light, I was sure I was in trouble. He pulled over abruptly, turned off the engine and asked me to look up – and there she was, the Skipping Girl. I was plunged into the deepest ecstasy. She’d descended from the heavens in her red dress and perfectly coiffed hair to confirm that I was safe as long as she was there – and that I was adopted. I believed that the Skipping Girl was my sister and every week for months I begged my father to take me back to see her, and he did. He tried explaining that she was a metal structure outlined in neon

tubing, but I wasn’t interested. The curve of her skipping rope, the arch of her raised feet and her expression focused directly on me – she was magical and perfect.

Later I learnt that in the 1930s when Skipping Girl vinegar was produced in a factory on Victoria Street she was known as “Little Audrey”, and that’s what Melburnians still call her. In 1990 it was claimed that Audrey was modelled on a nun who died in 1984. But it has also been reported that the manager of the factory based the sign on a photograph he took of a young girl named Elma, the daughter of the owner of the nearby milk bar where he bought his cigarettes. She is my sister.

We’ve both had our ups and downs. She’s never been stopped at Customs or married the wrong guy, but

in the late 1960s Whelan the Wrecker demolished her building and she was sold to a used-car dealer – which was a better outcome than my marriage. Her disappearance established the “Save Little Audrey”

campaign, which is when John Benjamin, the director of Crusader Plate, a factory 200 metres from her

original home, stepped in and let her have their rooftop. After a complete makeover, Audrey lit up again on Friday, November 13, 1970. In 1989 the building was redeveloped as offices and, the ’90s being what they were, she was off and on again, depending, I think, on the Dow Jones!

Thankfully, since 2009 little Audrey has been lighting up regularly at dusk, precisely at the very moment when little girls everywhere prepare to dream. \

Thanks for the memories ...

Chesty BondI was so in love with Chesty’s powerful jutting jaw, buffed manliness and trusty Bond singlet that I never thought about where his bottom half had disappeared. I decided (don’t ask me why) that he was the sort of man that would be unable to sit still in a room and for me this quality became the all-important characteristic of the archetypal Australian male. Until I saw Bondi Vet star Dr Chris Brown I didn’t believe any one could really look like Chesty Bond – is it just me or have you noticed the resemblance too?

Arnott’s biscuitsIn our milk bar, the tins of Arnott’s biscuits were perfectly lined up on the shelves behind the counter like a row of marching girls, exactly at my eyeline. Starting with Caramel Crowns, Cheds, and Chocolate Butternut Snaps through to Iced VoVos, Jatz and Tic Tocs, I made it my homework to memorise the entire Arnott’s range alphabetically, believing it was a practical way to learn English. I concluded that if I were a biscuit, I’d want to be a Chocolate Royal, because, just like a good pickle, a good biscuit should be crisp and soft at the same time.

VegemiteThe closest I’ve ever come to an orgy is spreading one Cheds biscuit with butter and another with Vegemite, squishing the two together and watching squiggly Vegemite and butter worms ooze through the perforations while making yum yum noises in the voice of Yoda. I’ve never grown tired of Vegemite and still remember the moment its yeasty saltiness first melted on my tongue. Vegemite is more than a spread in a jar (forget the tube, it’s just wrong), it’s a message from home, wherever you are in the world, that everything is right. And nothing, NOTHING communicates comfort food like the smell of Vegemite on toast. \

t ime truly flies when you are having fun. It has been two years since The Weekly Review began gracing your letterboxes, and I have enjoyed every moment interacting, teasing and widening your passion and knowledge of all things beauty.

I look forward each week to delving into my beauty cupboard to present you with yet another angle from which to look at the topic. Beauty, as you know very well, is about enhancement, not disguise.

We all need a little help, and if you can use a few products to whisk away the years or improve on what you have been blessed with, why not, I say.

This week I am intrigued by multitasking products. In my book, two are absolutely better than one. If one product can accomplish two or three things, I want to know more about it. In fact, I want to crow about it.

More and more brands are introducing multitasking products because there is an absolute demand for them. Gone are the days when women wanted a separate product to take care of each beauty need. There is now a growing trend for products that take care of several needs and make the beauty regime snappier.

So be prepared to clear some space in your beauty stash. Some of these products you will be familiar with while others should pique your curiosity. \

Flora by Gucci, The Garden Collection – Gorgeous Gardenia, Gracious Tuberose and Glamorous Magnolia, Eau De Toilette, 50ml/100ml, $109/$164. Myer/David Jones

Flora by Gucci first graced beauty counters in 2009. It was an instant hit. The scent with a hint of fruitiness was lauded as one of the most wearable.

This year Gucci expanded on its success, launching The Garden Collection – a trio of pretty juices in distinctive glass flacons. Like the original Flora, all three were inspired by Gucci’s renowned flora print.

These new fragrances go beyond the orginal. Glamorous Magnolia, Gorgeous Gardenia and Gracious Tuberose expand on their single notes.

The very first spray of Glamorous Magnolia announces a fresh symphony of magnolia, freesia, green leaves, citrus zest, peony, sandalwood and musk with a hint of warmed-up chocolate. The musk emerges as soon as the scent settles and pushes up the subtle imagined fragrance of magnolia. This is a sheer scent that lingers and becomes your very own. The fragrance’s pale-blue hue is enough to perk up your day.

Gorgeous Gardenia, with its pink hue, gives you a fair indication of what to expect – a sweet, fruity, soft scent that can become your signature day scent. This light, sparkling clean fragrance has notes of white gardenia, red berries, pear, frangipani, patchouli and a surprise accord of brown sugar – very yummy.

Gracious Tuberose, the final of the trio, is a true tuberose fragrance with notes of violet leaves, peach, orange flower, rose, labdanum, rock rose and white cedar wood. It starts off with a sweet tuberose scent but settles into a fragranced bouquet of spring blooms.

I am at a loss because I cannot pick a favourite. The three scents tell a different story, and every time you wear one it becomes familiar yet somehow new. I have experimented by mixing the scents together, which creates yet another dimension. This trio will be a welcome addition for any fragrance lover.

I t’s supposed to be easier the second time, and it certainly was for fashion designer Belinda Abbott, who this year celebrates season No.2 with the revamped label Spencerlacy. With autumn/winter 2012 already under her belt, the focus is now on spring/summer

2012-13, which is due in shops about August.Until then, however, think rugged alpaca knits, seamless leggings,

quality camisoles and T-shirts plus georgette silk skirts and shirts and you get the drift this winter is all about knowing how to layer. And, yes, layering is all about understanding how to do it properly – it’s a perfect time to mix soft and hard fabrics and add bulk without overdoing it.

“When I came on board with Spencerlacy in May last year I really had to try and bring the label on trend,” says Abbott. “I took notice of what was happening on catwalks; I observe fabrics and I work closely with our factories overseas to make sure everything is going to plan.”

Born in South Africa, where she studied fashion design, Abbott ended up in Australia, thanks to an ex-boyfriend she met in London, and moved to Melbourne. That was in 1998, and she still calls Melbourne home.

Her collection with Spencerlacy is all about feminine beauty – soft lines that embrace the curve, silk blouses that hint at a vintage glamour, shrugs and oversized scarves that assert an edgy look. “We are known for our seamless pieces, but we add a little bit of difference in there as well. We’re all about making use of trims that I might find and we like to add special details you don’t see everywhere else.”

She chose South America for inspiration this season – the peaks of the Andes and its snow-covered forests were focal points. She is big on earthy tones in dreamy blue-greys, caramel and black. There are loose knits in sheer yarns that work well with flowing skirts. Other pieces are heavier – chunky throwover knits are perfect with leggings or jeans. The emphasis is on casual glamour – where you can be a little bit country in the city.

Abbott keeps an eye on international trends for key looks – some of her favourite designers are Vera Wang, Philip Lim and Stella McCartney. But she admits that sometimes travel or daydreaming can also do the trick. “It’s been a lot of fun to come up with themes and compile collections. Winter is all about layered warmth, and for spring/summer my focus is on an underlying theme of art deco – with a colonial resort feel and lots of colour popping.” \

interview \ peter Wilmoth meets indira naidoo

i ndira Naidoo has encouraged us to look at our balconies differently, inspired by the quite natural desire to eat a tomato that didn’t taste of wet cardboard. And if you live in an apartment on the 13th floor and you want to taste real food, there’s not a lot of choice. “We had chairs, a table and a barbecue,” she says. “Like most people’s balcony, I guess.”

When was the moment she decided it could be something more than chairs and a barbie? “We had just come back from a trip to Italy and I had had just this amazing food experience there. They’ve got very beautiful volcanic soils, everyone grows something everywhere – railway tracks, balconies, in front of shops. People just use every space to grow things, and I went in search of tomatoes that tasted like those and ended up at a farmer’s market (in Sydney) and had a tomato at this stall and it was as close as anything I’ve had to those beautiful tomatoes I had in Italy.

“I said to the stallholder ‘Where did you get this? How can it grow like this? How can it taste so amazing?’ he said ‘It’s an heirloom variety. Many people don’t grow it, particularly not the commercial growers, and you won’t find it in the supermarkets’. I said ‘Well, how am I going to keep getting these tomatoes?’ He said ‘Save some seed and grow some yourself’. I said ‘I live in apartment with a balcony’. And he goes ‘Do you have some sun?’ I go ‘Yeah’ and he goes ‘Well, you can grow some in a pot’ and I went ‘OK, might as well try’.”

It was a light-bulb moment for the woman whose world, she writes, “once consisted of cars, gridlock, pollution, television studios, office towers, fluorescent lights, noisy bars, restaurants, manicures, dry cleaners, high-rise apartments, concrete and steel. I could go a week without my feet touching a blade of grass.” She needed to connect with the earth. Trouble was she didn’t have any. But she had a balcony.

I am sitting with Naidoo in a café in Sydney’s Potts Point, around the corner from her apartment and its balcony she has made famous through her book The Edible Balcony. And that’s why we are talking about soulless tomatoes served up by supermarkets. “There’s a couple of reasons why that’s happening,” she says. “One of them is the fact that it’s not fresh. A lot of those tomatoes have been picked and stored weeks before we even eat them, so of course the taste and nutrients is not going to be good. Secondly … the chemicals that have been put on them.

“And thirdly, which is what I found most interesting, is that the variety that are selected to be grown is not grown because it’s going to be juicy and tasty, it’s grown so it will store and transport well and won’t break and mush … I thought that was really interesting because I never used to really think of that when I go to a supermarket. I just think everything’s there because it’s the best, but it’s actually there because it stores the best. It lasts the most on the shelf.”

Once something of a cult figure when she worked at the ABC and SBS as a newsreader, Naidoo has launched her writing career as well as running a communication consultancy business with her husband, television director Mark FitzGerald.

I asked Naidoo how she reflects on her time as a “cult figure”. “As you know, journalists are very good at keeping people cut down to size, so you never get carried away with it,” she says. “It wasn’t something I really thought about, probably, until years afterwards. Even now I think, gee it’s been 12 years since I did SBS news and I got into a cab the other day and the cab driver said ‘Where have you been? Have you been on holiday?’ and I go ‘Yeah, great holiday if I can have it’.

“So then you realise the great lovely thing about those sorts of roles is that people connect with you, they remember you, you become part of their life, their family and it becomes something that keeps going on years after like it’s just bizarre.

“I was watching Young Talent Time the other night and I saw all these kids that I grew up with – Tina Arena and Steven Zammit and Jamie Redfern and Karen Knowles and (I’m thinking) ‘That’s exactly the same thing. I haven’t heard or seen of these people in 30 years since then but the memory, the connection, is still so deep with me … so I can sort of understand why other people would feel it.”

Naidoo grew up watching her mother cook great food. “Everyone says that I am harder on myself than I am,” she says. “I grew up with a mother who is an excellent cook and my sister is an excellent cook, so I have never thought of myself as a good cook because of that. But then if I had to objectively say yes, of course I am a good cook, and I can cook things that people say are lovely and they enjoy eating, but I am always comparing myself to very, very excellent people.”

The balcony garden is providing riches for the couple’s kitchen. “Because it’s a small space we can’t obviously grow everything that we eat but I try to put something in every meal we cook,” she says.

Naidoo had what she calls a “quite diverse” upbringing that, she says, “probably explains why I am so interested in lots of different things and I do find it hard just to do one thing”.

Born in South Africa, her family moved to Zambia and then later to England. When Gough Whitlam and the ALP came to power in 1972, assisted-migrant packages were offered.

“It was brilliant,” Naidoo says. “All you had to have was a professional qualification. My father was a dentist and I think we literally had £50 in the bank. It was a very difficult time because he had to redo his dental degree because this was a time when the study in India hadn’t been recognised in England.

“He had three children. He had to go back and re-study and then try and do some shifts in a dental school, so it was a very tough time.”

The family took up the opportunity offered by the Australian government and moved to Tasmania, where they lived for eight years before moving back to Africa, to Zimbabwe, where Naidoo lived from the age of 13 to 18. “We were there through the civil war (and saw) the end (of it). “It was a completely different environment from middle-class Launceston. A lot of the kids in my class had been child soldiers during the war. There were amputations, horrific burns. It was full-on. And there was still a lot of fighting and tanks going through the streets.”

From Zimbabwe, the family moved to country South Australia, where Naidoo did her final year of school before getting a cadetship at the ABC. After five years she moved to Sydney and read the late news on the ABC before moving to SBS.

She reflects on her peripatetic life. “Now that I am older I look back and I think ‘Well that explains a whole lot of things about why I am just always interested in things, going places and meeting people’.”

Last year Naidoo travelled to London to host a radio show for a digital radio network founded recently by Canadian Tyler Brûlé, the founder of the uber-cool Wallpaper magazine. “He sees the future of broadcasting as radio, not television, and he thinks with the explosion of smartphone handsets most people are changing the way they listen and download radio,” she says. “He thinks there’s a huge market for people who want to listen to radio on the hop.”

The show she hosted was a two-hour mix of news and current affairs and a bit of culture and issues around the environment. Naidoo found Brûlé impressive. “He’s a brilliant broadcaster. We co-hosted some shows together … He’s really concerned about also finding a good funding model because it’s all well and good to say I want good-quality media and journalism and newspapers and radio and television but how are you going to pay for it, where is the model?”

Naidoo and FitzGerald have been together 14 years and married for 10. There are two adult stepchildren. FitzGerald directs the ABC’s Q&A, The Gruen Transfer, and The Chaser. “He is my creative inspiration,” she says. “I get a lot of my creative stimulation from him. He is an amazing creative presence.

“It’s a good mix because he’s comfortable in embracing the silly in life, and it can be one of the dangers when you come from very serious news and current-affairs background that that’s not something that you comfortably embrace. He’s really good like that. He always sees the silliness in everything.”

Is that the secret of a great relationship? “We make each other laugh, and I think that’s very important for both of us to be able to do that.”

Outside work, Naidoo’s passion is “growing the community” around her neighbourhood. “I’m really into making connections, gathering people, people sharing ideas, people feeling connected,” she says.

Last year Naidoo instigated a speaker’s group in Potts Point called Walkie Talkie. The group meets regularly, walks around the area and then dines at a local restaurant, booked for the event. “One of the things I discovered while I was doing the book was that I was spending a lot of time in my suburb rather than being the traditional commuter where I would rush out, rush back in.”

Compiling the book, she’d “do my writing, we’d do a shoot and then I’d take a walk have some lunch, sit in the park. I spent time in the suburb and started meeting a lot more people, finding out what was going on, and I became even more fascinated with the place and the people in it. I didn’t realise what extraordinary history and the extraordinary people that lived here. And so I thought wouldn’t it be great if we could have an occasion where people could come chat about their life, what they think about their place here, why they live here in this area, and we’d gather have a few drinks, ask them a few questions and then create a bit more of a community feel and get a sense of who are the people in your neighbourhood”.

Naidoo started Walkie Talkie a year ago with a friend who lives in her apartment block. She says in the area there are a lot of empty-nesters who have come in from the more leafy suburbs and are unused to seeing the huge variety of people in the street. “It’s been so much fun. It’s been a nice, subtle way for people to engage with their community, what’s really happening. The people running the charities can talk to them about what they’re doing – what are the real issues, so it’s not just stepping over the (drug-affected) body as you step into Woolworths.”

The group engages a speaker for their evenings. Julian Morrow from The Chaser and Malcolm Turnbull, the local member, have spoken. Turnbull spoke about love. “That was brilliant. The contrast of love in the area between the sort of ‘lust’ love … and the love for the people who run the Wayside Chapel and Lou’s Place (a drop-in centre for women in King’s Cross) is very generous, an embracing, non-judgmental love that exists on opposites sides of the street in the same area.” \

We love it\ p18

i t is a very smart, 1920s solid red-brick-and-stucco house with leadlight-trimmed windows and front door. A contemporary front

garden mixes lush lawn with dramatic large-leaf plants. But there’s more, lots

more to it. Behind the pristine street appeal is a lot of house. And a lot of land: 830 square metres, in fact.

Already the appeal factor is rising. Especially for families who want room to spread their wings. There’s space aplenty, room to entertain indoor and outside, and a large timber deck that steps down to a big back garden and lush lawn.

Most importantly for families, this house allows parents who are in the kitchen or living room to watch the young children playing.

“That’s what we love about this house,” the vendors say. “Whenever you are in the living room and kitchen you can keep an eye on the kids. It’s so reassuring.”

This is the “wow” part of the house. The vendors, who

have lived here for eight years, have extended the house to almost double its original size while maintaining a very good balance of house to land.

That’s the beauty of Eaglemont. Big blocks and solid-brick houses go together.

Interiors are mainly white, with varying shades of mocha in tiles, cabinets and carpets.

Space and light are natural partners here. From the high ceilings, which are more than five metres at their highest, to large windows and sliding doors, the informal living /dining/entertainment hub is bathed in natural light most of the day.

The spacious contemporary split-level living zone includes a granite-finished kitchen with stainless steel appliances, big, broad benchtops, white-tiled splashbacks and several work spaces.

Near the meals area a sliding glass door leads to a side deck, designed to make it easy to bring shopping inside after parking the car under cover at the side of the house.

A large island bench separates the kitchen from the meals area and provides a great viewing point for observing the family rooms. In this room, a built-in entertainment unit occupies a central position on one wall, but there is room for large couches and then some.

On the rear wall, concertina glass doors fold back and open the living area to a broad timber deck, which should make outdoor entertaining easy. A wide verandah overhang provides shelter, while steps lead from the deck down to the lawn and a garden with established trees.

A separate wing near the family room contains a bedroom and large family bathroom with mocha-tiled floors and spacious spa bath. The main bedroom, with walk-in wardrobe, is also in this part of the house. With its view to the back garden and french doors leading to the deck, it is as though the main bedroom is a private villa retreat among the greenery.

The contemporary renovation has also created very smart, bright, white rooms from the original 1920s

spaces. By opening up the sitting room and adjoining dining room, the vendors have created two very useable rooms that provide for a better flow of traffic. These rooms have modern light fittings, sheer curtains and plantation shutters. The dining room has also been opened up to the hall, adding to the sense of space.

Also with the push for zoned living, it means the parents can have their own formal entertainment area, as well as the large open-plan zone at the back of the house.

Still at the front of the house, a study doubles as a fourth bedroom, while another bedroom off the central hall has its own en suite bathroom.

For lifestyle, comfort and position, this house ticks all the boxes. The Eaglemont village and station are a three-minute walk away. It is close to parklands, has easy access to the Yarra River, schools, the Austin and Mercy hospitals, the East Ivanhoe Village and Upper Heidelberg Road. \

Being a stone’s throw from the shops is usually an exaggeration, but here at 52 Silverdale Road you don’t have to be a professional cricketer to smash a window in Eaglemont village. Opposite the old petrol

station and just down from the station, this semi-detached, single-level townhouse looks and feels part of the village.

It was built in 1936 and retains a charming clinker-brick exterior and many stylish art-deco features inside. Although old, it is also in a sense brand new. Property developer and design buff Cassandra Dillon has extended the townhouse and completely made over the interiors. It is now the ideal haven for empty-nesters seeking to downsize without leaving Eaglemont.

The house has two bedrooms, including the main with an en suite. The guest bedroom is serviced by a stunning second bathroom with freestanding bath, twin CaesarStone vanities and frameless walk-in shower. There are also two distinct living areas.

The lounge and dining rooms remind of yesteryear with their dual-brick fireplaces, timber picture rails, double-hung windows and superbly maintained decorative ceilings. The nearby living hub is slick and modern with almost-four-metre vaulted ceilings and a new kitchen with 900mm Smeg oven, Ilve range, Bosch dishwasher and large stone island bench. It opens out to a covered deck and private backyard. There is parking in the single car garage or out in the driveway. \ LIAM CARTER

Although Kingsley Street has the feel of a country lane, it is surprisingly close to the city. If it weren’t for the river just a few metres down Heidelberg Road, you would be in inner-city Alphington. Even so, the

charming interwar weatherboard at No.7 hides away at the end of the street. It sits back from the road behind a big front garden and single carport. Inside, the house makes a big first impression with its stunning timber-panelled entrance hall. The house has original timber floors, exposed beams, picture rails and architraves. Multipane windows, another hallmark of 1920s design, ensure the interiors are brimming with natural light. The front lounge and main bedroom both face north. The three bedrooms share two recently renovated bathrooms. The main bathroom has a floating vanity and corner shower. The second bathroom doubles as the laundry. The kitchen has plenty of space. It overlooks a meals area, which connects to a covered deck with garden views. \ LIAM CARTER

This property is full of surprises. First, you would not expect to find hectares of rolling farmland this close to busy Diamond Creek Road. One moment you are travelling to the ring road and the next you are surrounded

by open spaces, horses and trees. The second surprise is the gorgeous three-bedroom brick house perched on the corner directly opposite these views. The house was built 11 years ago by the current owners and is in impeccable condition. The interiors combine rich timber boards with high ceilings and french windows dressed in lavish drapes. The open family hub is served by a large kitchen with black-granite benches, timber cabinets and a 900mm Smeg oven. It opens out to a covered entertainment area bordered by pencil pines. The main bedroom has an en suite and dressing room. From another bedroom, you look right across the farmland to Greenhills Primary School in the distance. The property is in the St Helena College zone. \ LIAM CARTER

Live large in this Eltham property. This house has 390 square metres of living space. That’s bigger than many allotments of land in the inner city. The property is not lacking in open space beyond its walls

either. The block, which is perched high above and behind the nursery off Main Road, is almost 1300 square metres. The backyard has been cleverly terraced to make the most of the land. A covered outdoor entertainment area is bound by levels of lawn and fruit trees. While hanging the washing, you can take in views of the surrounding hills. There is also a gate and ample space at the side of the house for a boat or caravan. The property was built in 2001 and remains smart and modern inside. Arches off the entrance hall access the home office and rumpus to one side and the elegant lounge and dining to the other. The family hub includes a large kitchen with gas cooktop and walk-in pantry, a spacious sitting area and a light-filled meals area nestled in a bay window. Upstairs, four bedrooms share a central retreat. \ LIAM CARTER

You’ll be seeing red if you miss out on this Green Street gem. This contemporary three-bedroom house has been freshly painted throughout and has new carpet upstairs. Despite sharing the block with

three other units, this residence is set well away from the street and offers a great level of privacy. The lounge/dining area has floorboards and opens to the easy-to-maintain outdoor area. There’s minimal grass to cut but still enough room to relax outside. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances and lots of cupboard space and is near the powder room and the laundry. All the bedrooms are upstairs. The main has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with a spa bath. Two other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a bathroom that has a skylight and sandstone-coloured tiles in the shower. One of the bedrooms has been set up as a study and has a private balcony. Other features include ducted heating and a secure double garage. It is close to Ivanhoe station and Ivanhoe shopping village. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA

This house, built 12 years ago by respected C & J Designer Homes, still has a tidy street presence. Gleaming polished floorboards, recessed ceilings and pale-green and cream-coloured walls set the scene inside,

with ceiling roses and leadlight windows adding decorative elements. The formal lounge/dining area is at the entrance, with steps down to the large kitchen, which has stainless steel appliances. It looks out to the open-plan lounge/meals space. French doors lead to a paved outdoor area with an undercover deck overlooking the manicured and landscaped backyard. The property also backs onto a nature reserve. At the front of the house there are two bedrooms, one of which has been transformed into a study. The other is the main bedroom, which has a large walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with rose-patterned tiles and a bath. Two other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a second bathroom. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA

This private country hideaway is nestled among leafy native trees and has panoramic views of Diamond Creek yet it is only two minutes from the station. Running with the country theme, it is set on a 0.8-hectare

block and has a timber interior, earthy tones, high ceilings and large windows. Garden views can be had from any room – but for a more up-close and personal experience, retreat to the large deck. This outdoor entertainment area is a highlight, where the sounds of chirping birds provide the soundtrack. On cooler days, the lounge/meals area may be a better option. The kitchen is nearby and has stainless steel appliances. Two bedrooms share a white-tiled bathroom. The main bedroom is on the mezzanine level and overlooks the main hub of the house. It has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite that has slate tiles. This property is close to the Chute Street shops and schools. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA
