T HIS term Year 9 Haywood students were given an insight into the world of work, by enrolling as Industrial Cadets. Chosen to take part in the programme were Charlotte Selman, Ryan Lench, Christian Bailey, Lesley Heath, Hannah Green, Edward Selman, Ryan Machin, Akash Vigneswaran, Aaron Tinsley, Charlotte Williams, Imogen Allanson, and Olivia Stanyer. It took place over eight weeks with the cadets visiting a range of businesses whilst working on the project. Local industry and businesses signed up to support the industrial cadet scheme which is supported and promoted by HRH The Prince of Wales. The programme came to an end in March when the cadets graduated in an evening ceremony at Port Vale Football Club. Following the graduation, HRH Prince of Wales visited The Co-operative Academy of Stoke-on-Trent on the 16th May, where he met students from the Industrial Cadets programme. Prince Charles – who also visited Middleport Pottery and the Wedgwood Institute in Burslem Town Centre – spent time talking to our students, to find out about the scheme. Charlotte Selman said: “It was a great honour. YEAR 10 students entered acompetition to design a bookcover for the North StaffordshireRoyal Society for the Protectionof Birds group.

The theme was wildlife andJasmin Nahar’s design waschosen as the winner.

Her design featured abeautiful owl, alongside insects,flowers and a mouse.

Jasmin’s winning design willbe used for the cover of a bookcontaining poems byStaffordshire people.

The design is currently beingprinted onto hundreds of bookswhich are due to be launched inSeptember, in order to raisefunds for the charity.

Jasmin will be collecting herprize and a copy of the book inSeptember.

THE Summer concert took placeon July 3 and parents, carersand students were entertainedby a range of delightfulperformances from Music,Drama and Dance.

It came now Year 11 studentshave concluded their exams andare waiting, with confidence wethink, for their GCSE and BTECresults at the end of August.

They had two special days inschool, post exams. First, theyattended a special Year 11leavers assembly, where with afew jokes and surprises, staffhelped them to celebrate theirtime at Haywood.

Then they attended the schoolLeavers’ Ball, held on a beautifulsummer evening, at Keele Hall.

Congratulations to a superyear group.

THE Humanities Department is ending theacademic year with a bang with a range ofexciting activities that will enhance some of

the excellent learning that has taken place. Year 7 and 8 had an exciting day at Warwick

Castle. The students built on the work they havedone looking at life in Medieval England by visitingboth the impressive castle at Warwick and thefantastically preserved dungeons.

The day gave Year 7 and 8 students real hands-on experience of life in Medieval England,provided lots of fun and rewarded students for alltheir hard work in History.

The final week of term sees the Humanities’team going on a European adventure!

Students from Year 9, 10 and 11 will spendseveral nights in Belgium on a World War OneBattlefields Tour.

The visit will be jam packed, with students takingin the Museums, Battlefields, Cemeteries and thefamous town of Ypres where they will spend anafternoon and evening eating out, shopping andattending the Last Post Ceremony at the MeninGate.

The visit is certain to be a valuable experiencefor all involved.

CLASS 7EN have beenworking with the ceramicartist Lawrence Epps to createporcelain slabs which will bedisplayed at the BritishCeramics Biennial inSeptember 2013.

Students thought of a beliefand used a series of fonts tostamp them on to large scaleslabs of porcelain clay.

They also produced aseries of drawings which havebeen turned into transfers tofire onto their glazed slabs.

The finished work will be ondisplay for all to see duringthe festival which will run forsix weeks from 28thSeptember to 10th November,2013.

The festival will presentwork from the UK’s leadingcontemporary ceramic artistsin a series of new exhibitionsand special events across thecity.

STUDENTS who designedthe memorial gates for thenew Burslem CommunityFire Station will go down inhistory!

Their names and a photoof the gates appear in anew book on the history ofthe Mother Town, “BurslemThrough Time”.

HAYWOOD Engineering College cemented its statusas one of the UK’s most innovative academies whenit sent a hi-tech message out to hundreds ofparents and carers at feeder primary schools.

Using a new app developed for smartphonesand tablets, readers of a new publication calledPrimary Stars can point their phones at a photo of Head Teacher Carl Ward and watch a specially-recorded video.

You can see the video by following the easythree step instructions printed below, and thebonus video content will be streamed to yourphone or tablet.

They left gifts and gave footballkits, computers, a projector andstationery to Ruai Boys schoolbefore leaving similar gifts withMuhuri Muchiri.

This school is quite well off forsports equipment, thanks to

Haywood staff and students. Theirteams play in Port Vale and StokeCity football strips (donated by theclubs).

Our students enjoyedexperiences including wildlife,dance, meeting children who hadnever seen white people before,bartering in the markets, acrocodile sanctuary and a verypoignant visit to a children’s home.

The team arrived with suitcases

full of clothes,toiletries andstationery for thechildren and saw, firsthand, the conditions inwhich the children live.

The team returnedhome with the message forour students, to value whatthey have and treasure theireducation. It was an experiencethey will never forget.

THE school has been asked toparticipate in this year’sCreative Minds Festival inconjunction with Creative ArtsNorth Staffs (CANS).

Over 200 students from KeyStage Three have been workingwith graffiti artist-in-residenceChris Guest in order to createpainted canvases and art

magnets. The theme wasStoke-on-Trent and the artworkwas displayed at the RegentTheatre from Tuesday 2nd Julythrough to Friday 5th July.

7DJ enjoyed a visit to the National FootballMuseum in Manchester during May, as part ofthe National Literacy Trust’s ‘Premier LeagueReading Stars’ programme.

They explored the museum during themorning, seeing exhibits including a player’smedal from just-retired Alex Ferguson, shirtsfrom throughout the history of the game andfootball equipment from around the world.

The braver students took part in a virtualpenalty shoot-out and provided a ‘Match of theDay’ commentary.

During the afternoon, students listened toPaul Cookson’s hilarious poetry and wrote apoem with him.

The students had a great day and theprogramme continued until the end of term,including a visit from, local author Sharon Sant.

STUDENTS have been praised fortheir efforts in the BT DigitalChampions Programme.

Organisers were hugelyimpressed by the leadership shownby the staff running the programmeat Haywood and the efforts ofstudents to share their skills to helpothers.

It attracted 180 schools nationallyand Haywood students wererecognised for their commitment,helping family members toovercome digital exclusion.

The programme was overseen byAssistant Head Teacher Mrs PaulaFergusson, who said: “It’s been awonderful opportunity for studentsto support the community and theirfamilies with ICT skills. Thestudents really enjoyed and valuedthis project.”

The school was in the top fiveleader board finalists and as aresult received tickets for anassembly rock concert at Wembley.

On July 10, students in year 9and 10 based on their commitmentto progress throughout thisacademic year went to London forthe day to see the concert as aspecial reward. Miss Hughes said:“This was a fantastic opportunityfor our students and they were allvery excited about our trip toLondon.”

ON Tuesday June 25, childrenfrom New Ford, Smallthorne,Moorpark, Sneyd Green, Mill Hilland Burnwood, met in the mainhall at Haywood to competeagainst each other in a ‘SpellingBee’ competition.

The American-style quizconsisted of the children takingpart in spelling games and a ‘knockout’ round before the grand finale.

A child from each school was inthe final and the winning school,Smallthorne Primary, waspresented with a trophy. Theevent was organised by MrsO’Dea, Head of English.

Y9 footballers reached theLeague semi-final this yearand there was a fantasticeffort from both teams.

Haywood were put underpressure from the start butdefended well. All Haywoodstudents were a credit to theschool, although Haywood lost inthe semi-final 4-1. Well done tothe year 9 team. Man of thematch went to Drew Miller.

Year 11 Champions Haywood and Birches Head metin the Final of the Stoke NorthFootball Championships played atBiddulph Town.

Haywood took the lead after acorner by Aaron Turnock was metby Ashley Smith who neatlyslotted it home from close range.

The lead lasted 30 seconds asBirches equalised straight away. Haywood was then awarded apenalty but Ashley Smith failed toconvert the chance.

Birches then took the lead justbefore half time with a stunningstrike from 30 yards. Haywooddominated the second half andcreated chances throughout.

Josh Worthington stepped upfor another penalty but the keepersaved it and the score remained2-1.

Ashley Smith broke free after60 minutes and struck a great leftfooted shot past the keeper toequalise and Haywood were backin the game. The match lookeddestined for extra time whenBirches were awarded a penaltywith 2 minutes to play. Howeverthey failed to convert their penalty

and the matchended 2-2.

Extra time wasplayed with nogoals and thegame went topenalties.Haywood wentfirst and KaylemLewis’ shot wassaved. Thishanded theinitiative to Bircheshowever, Haywood managed tosave the next 2 penalties.

Then Aaron Turnock, ChrisNellis and Ashley Smith scoredwhich left Josh Worthington toscore the winner and ensureHaywood were crownedChampions of the North!

KS3 Cricket TeamWell done to the lads who wonthe City Indoor CricketCompetition. Bilaal Zaroob,captain, was a key member of the

side. He scored the most runs tohelp Haywood win thecompetition.

Sky Living for Sportambassador visits HaywoodDaniel Caines (Great Britain 400metres athlete) gave aninspirational talk to Haywood KS3students about his career highsand lows, challenges he hasovercome in his career and theimportance of a positive outlookon life.

TWELVE Year 10 students enjoyed a week at WhitemoorLakes, Lichfield as a part of their work experience.

During the week students took part in a variety of activities,including archery, team building, high ropes and abseiling!

The students also had the opportunity to develop their workskills through mock job interviews and completing the ‘BritishSafety Council Award in Workplace Hazard Awareness’.

All of the students did exceptionally well – well done!

As a whole, Team Haywood Y7 came8th out of 14 teams and Y8 came 4th outof 14 teams.

Well done to all concerned.A number of the team then went on to

compete for Stoke in the U13/U14County Athletics Championships inTamworth.

Connor Scott won the javelin, AnnieMae Potts came 6th in the Shot and TomMangan came 3rd in the hurdles.
