Ijust adore jewelry —and it’s not about thebling. OK, it’s a little
bit about the bling, butwhat I love most is how agorgeous piece of jewelrybrings focus to an entireensemble. And gooddesign does the samething. When a room hasthe right focal point, itdraws you in. When it’smissing, the whole roomlacks presence.
My clients, Orla andBrian, had exactly thatproblem. The young cou-ple had recently movedinto their first hometogether and their open-concept living/diningroom lacked any suitablefocus. With plain whitewalls and an awkwardblend of “his and hers”furniture, the space had noreal character.
The couple really want-ed a place where theycould feel at home andentertain family andfriends. So I geared upand, using focal-pointdesign, took theirliving/dining room fromblank slate to bold space.
My big challenges wereto create zones in theiropen-concept space, addmore seating and find away to blend the couple’sstyles. When designing a
multipurpose space, eachzone should have onemain focal point to anchorit. In the living room, Ibuilt a beautiful framed-inbanquette against the side-wall that not only pro-vides some much-neededseating, but also visuallygrounds the space.
To create the banquette,I designed a full wallframe, flanked it with low, white bookcases andinstalled a warm charcoal
upholstered bench cush-ion. But what really makesthe focal statement here isthe banquette’s customblack-leather quilted back-rest that soars from benchto ceiling. Suspended fromthe ceiling, at the top ofthe backrest is the new tel-evision screen, whichvisually blends in againstthe black background ofthe seating niche anddoesn’t deter from thefocus.
This banquette alsoserves to ground a newseating area consisting ofa warm beige sofa, twoteal armchairs, two mir-rored cube tables and acreamy area rug. Andsince the room has nocloset, I introduced a stun-ning piece of reclaimedwood cabinetry to helphide and organize anyclutter.
In the dining room, Ichose the back wall as my
focal point. As with theblack-leather banquette, agreat way to create focusis with color, so I paintedthis wall black, which uni-fies the two zones andmakes a very dramaticstatement. I also includedan elevated electric fire-place in my design foradded visual interest.
I then took the couple’sexisting dark wood din-ing-room table and had it

But there area few ways we can help you quicklyupdate your home without spending toomuch time or money. Here at Hawaii’sInterior Design Center, we call it“REFRESH.”

Revitalize, Rejuvenate, Rearrange,Reorganize, Recover and Revive
Some you can do on your own andsome we can help you with, but any or allwill make your space a brighter, refreshedplace to live, love and laugh every day.
Revitalize with new fixtures or lightingNew lighting can make a world of dif-
ference in your space and awaken beauti-ful angles, artwork or colors throughoutyour room. Electrical fixtures to matchthe style you create give a feeling of finish
to your space. A few new handles andknobs will spruce up old cabinets, furni-ture, and even pantry doors. Match mod-ern hardware with traditional cabinets foran unexpected fresh look. Adding newhardware in your kitchen and bathroomcan make such a difference while cookingfor your family or unwinding at the end ofa hard day. Backsplashes or new counter-tops also will make a difference in theoverall feel and, in some cases, in the easeof cleaning.
Rejuvenate with new paintNo matter how much you clean those
walls they still feel dull and look a littledirty. You will be surprised how much anew coat of white or neutral paint canbrighten up a room and make it feel clean.Changing out your baseboards assists thepaint in making the room seem muchbrighter and cleaner. Adding a new doorto a room can create a fresh, new feeling.
To add cheer, warmth and happiness toyour room, let us add pops of color withan accent wall or wallpaper. When youthink of wallpaper don’t think of the out-of-date patterns we see all too much
of. Let us showyou the manycurrent, cutting-edge colors, pat-terns and tex-tures we carry atHawaii’s InteriorDesign Center. On your ownyou can bring theroom together with a vibrant bouquet offresh flowers, a bowl of bright fruit, orbold new throw pillows.
Rearrange your accessoriesSwap lamps, end tables, artwork, rugs
and knick-knacks between rooms for anew look. Move your furniture around fora different configuration that sets up theroom’s energy in a different way.
Reorganize with shelving and cabinetsWe have a wide variety of cabinets and
accessories. We are confident that youwill find something that suits your tasteand budget. New cabinets can be set upfor your specific needs, helping withorganization and functionality of anyroom. Hang shelves to display framedphotos, colorful vases and special keep-sakes.
Recover chair cushions Beautify old side chairs with gorgeous
fabric. Simply remove the cushion fromthe frame, spread new fabric over the
cushion, turn over, and use a staple gun tosecure it in place.
Revive your floors. Let us help you determine what the best
option is for you to revive your floors.Installing beautiful hardwood, engineeredor laminate floors can make a huge impacton the overall feeling of your space.Sanding and refinishing your existingwood floors takes on average two to threedays for about 500 square feet and willrejuvenate your home’s appearance.Choosing tile for your flooring opens upyour space to so many options — fromnatural stone to beaming porcelain. Tile isso versatile inside and out. Replacing oldcarpet with an upgraded, better qualitycarpet also helps your space in so manyways.
If refreshing is just what you have beenlooking to do, stop in at our design center, which is open seven days a week from8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We look forward tohelping you REFRESH!

If a new client of DeepPurple painting contrac-tors wants assurance of
the quality of his company’swork, owner Jimmy Suhshows the customer a col-lection of photos of some ofthe hundreds of projectshe’s completed over theyears. The result?“They are amazed,” Suh
said. “They always com-ment on the meticulousdetailing and the scope ofour work. I also can givethem a DVD that they canreview at their conven-ience. If they want pastclient referrals and testimo-nials, I can provide thattoo.”For 18 years, Deep Purple
was one of the busiestpainting contractors in SanFrancisco, where Suh han-dled residential jobs thatranged from apartmentinteriors to upscale homesin Pacific Heights and his-toric buildings. His com-mercial jobs includedapartment and office build-ings.“Anyone who has been to
San Francisco in recentyears knows how the oldneighborhoods are beingtransformed with new paintand elaborate detailing.Every architect and interiordesigner wants a new andoriginal color scheme.Several clients told me Iwas the best painter in SanFrancisco,” Suh said.
In January 2010, Suh re-established his business inHawaii, where he is alicensed and bonded paint-ing contractor. Here, hecontinues to provide quali-ty painting at competitiveprices for both homes andbusinesses. But why leave a lucrative
painting business in SanFrancisco? Suh said he hadalways dreamed of living inHawaii, and his family wasincreasingly eager to makethe move after 18 years inan area not known forwarm, sunny weather. “Ihave many friends livinghere and was encouragedthat there would be oppor-tunities for a first-classpainting contractor ... andthat’s the way it turnedout,” Suh said.Already, Suh has a roster
of satisfied clients, andsome are telling him theyhave never worked with apainter who put so mucheffort into making surethey were entirely pleasedwith the finished product. He noted that many of hiscurrent projects are newcustom homes in areasranging from LeewardOahu to Waikiki, DiamondHead and Kaimuki. He
works directly with thehomeowners, as well aswith contractors and archi-tects.Just how satisfied are
Suh’s customers? He’s fre-quently told, “If you wantto use me as a reference, goahead and give my phonenumber to your newclients. I won’t hesitate torecommend you.” In addition to providing
prospective clients withphotos and a beautifullyproduced DVD showcasinghis work, Suh makes apoint of meeting them at
the job site to assess thecondition of the property, the amount of prep workthat will be needed, and toselect colors of siding, walls and trim. Once hedetermines the extent ofthe job, he presents a writ-ten quote and time frame. “Although I have a great
crew, I work on every job. Iwant the client to feel con-fident that someone is tak-ing a personal interest inthe project. I approach eachjob as if it were a work ofart, with honesty and withenthusiasm,” Suh said.

Hot weather is hereand hotter weatheris on the way, so it’s
time to start thinking airconditioning.“It doesn’t make sense to
swelter through humid, windless summer weatherwhen an efficient air conditioning system can keep youcool and comfortable for pennies a day,” said AireConditioner Shoppe owner Neil Wiedemann. “And thehigher the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio), themore you save on electric.”The operative word is “efficient.” Old or malfunction-
ing air conditioning systems are energy hogs that don’t dothe job effectively and run up your electricity bills. Airconditioning systems available from the Aire ConditionerShoppe are the newest models that incorporate the latesttechnological advances. They are unobtrusive and virtual-ly silent.Wiedemann, who has been in the air conditioning busi-
ness since 1979, sells and installs split ductless systems onOahu, as well as portable air conditioners. He also sells theless expensive window units that are often the choice forapartments, condos and houses. He guarantees the lowestprices for any product he sells with installation of thesame equipment. For 10 years running Fujitsu has named
him “Dealer of the Year.” “About five years ago, the
inverter compressor was devel-oped, a component of the condens-er, which is installed outside thehome and connects to the air han-dler unit inside the home,”Wiedemann said. “Then last yearanother advance was made in thetechnology, making it possible tocool up to eight separate rooms inthe house with the same condenser connected to eight sep-arate air handlers, all of which can be operated and set forthe desired temperature independently. Automatic swinglouvers and multiple fan speeds in the handler — the unitmounted in the home — allow you to control the amountand direction of the airflow to maximize comfort.”Wiedemann pointed out that split ductless systems can
be just as efficient as central air conditioning, or more effi-cient in terms of energy savings, depending on thelifestyle of the homeowner.Even the window air conditioning units, which are gen-
erally what you see in older apartment buildings or town-
homes, have been extensively improvedboth in efficiency and appearance. However, the tenant and/or owner needs toobtain permission from the managementcompany and/or apartment owners associ-ation to install any type of air conditioning. The Aire Conditioner Shoppe offers free
on-site estimates and design consultation. The companyinstalls and repairs what it sells. Wiedemann credits hiscompany’s success to a strong commitment to customersatisfaction. The Aire Conditioner Shoppe’s slogan is,“We do it right the first time.”“When our estimator reviews your needs and you make
a decision on the system you want to install, you will havea quote the next day by phone or fax,” he said. “If the cus-tomer is satisfied, we draw up the contract. Once I set aprice, it’s firm and it will be guaranteed the lowest avail-able price with the same equipment,” he said.

When choosing a solarenergy provider, a longtrack record and a
valid solar contractor’s licenseare the hallmarks of any reputablecompany. Enter Bruce Ekimura, Alternate
Energy Inc.’s owner and founder, who has a journeyman plumberlicense and a Hawaii solar powersystems contractor license, whichcover both solar water heatingand photovoltaic systems. Thelatter license is relatively rare inthe business as many solar con-tractors hold only a solar waterheating license. Ekimura and histeam have been solar energyexperts in Hawaii since the 1970s.Now, Alternate Energy has gar-
nered another badge of excellence.Darren Furumoto, operationsmanager and lead installer, has
earned the industry’s leadingrecognition of expertise as a certi-fied installer of solar electric sys-tems (photovoltaic or PV systems)from the North American Board ofCertified Energy Practitioners(NABCEP). Designation as aNABCEP certified solar PVinstaller is widely recognized to bethe gold standard in certificationin the renewable energy industry.“Receiving NABCEP’s
Certified Installer status is per-sonally very satisfying,” saidFurumoto. “It also means we canoffer our customers the addedconfidence of knowing theirinstallation will be performed tothe highest standards in the solarindustry.” To earn the certification,
Furumoto passed a rigorous examthat covers the multi-craft aspects
of being a professional PVinstaller, demonstrating knowl-edge on subjects as diverse as sys-tem design, electrical and jobsafety, the National Electric Code, roofing and construction tech-niques, system commissioning, and troubleshooting. All certified NABCEP installers
also must have real-world experi-ence as a senior person on the
installation crew as well as a min-imum number of hours ofadvanced training. “One thing you can be assured
of with NABCEP’s CertifiedInstaller is that your job won’tbe their first,” said EzraAuerbach, executive director ofNABCEP. “We are delighted towelcome Darren Furumoto ofAlternate Energy to the ranks ofthe industry’s leading solarinstallers.”Furumoto has been with

Company earns solar industry’s most prestigious certification
RevoluSun is sparking an energyrevolution right here in Hawaii asit helps local families harness the
power of the sun in order to make afford-able, clean, renewable electricity.
The average Hawaii family is expectedto spend more than $100,000 on electric-ity over the next 25 years, which happensto be the warranty life of most solar pan-els. Yet, Hawaii homeowners have amyriad of options available to help themproduce solar electricity right away —and at just a fraction of that cost. “I cannot say it enough — purchasing a
solar system just made economic sense,”said Aiea resident Stuart Yamada, whose12-panel SunPower 318 system offsets hisentire energy load every month, evenwith recently installed air conditioning.“As an engineer, I had researched solarenergy and realized how much financialsense it made as well as the benefits tothe environment. I wanted to work witha local company that was professional,well-qualified, and could design a customsystem based on my needs.
“I couldn't be happier with RevoluSun.”RevoluSun prides itself in having added
dozens of new jobs for Hawaii residentson Oahu, Maui and the Big Island throughits growing business and with installationpartner American Piping & Boiler. One of the small, start-up solar firm’s
goals was to solve a problem thatplagued Hawaii’s solar industry.RevoluSun hoped to create a companythat avoided using inexperienced instal-lation crews to perform the critical elec-trical and roofing work required for a PVsystem. By partnering with the highlyrespected electrical and constructioncontractor American Piping & Boiler forall its installations, word of RevoluSun’sattention to detail and installationexpertise spread quickly, and RevoluSunended 2010 as the largest photovoltaic(PV) contractor in the state afterinstalling hundreds of new residentialsolar electric systems.
RevoluSun’s approach has allowed foramazing growth without sacrificing qual-ity. In April, RevoluSun completed three
times theamount ofresidential
systems compared to the next largestsolar company. Meanwhile, RevoluSunis the only solar company to boast animpressive 100 percent completion ratefor permitting, and a 93 percent satisfac-tion rating in client service based on asurvey conducted by panel manufacturerSunPower.
RevoluSun’s “Revolusunaries” as theylike to be called, are a force of more than70 local people throughout Oahu, Mauiand the Big Island. Each one is committedto spreading the good ofrenewable energy, and takespride in guiding homeown-ers through the oftentimesconfusing complex subjectsof tax incentives, financingoptions, design, installation
and maintenance of a PV system. “RevoluSun is committed to a cleaner
Hawaii and our ‘RevoluSunaries’ are pas-sionate members of our community —aunties, uncles, friends,” said RevoluSunprincipal Eric Carlson. “Hawaii is a spe-cial place to all of us and we all would liketo leave it a cleaner place for the nextgeneration. Everyone one can play a partinto making this happen, solar or not. “Here at RevoluSun our focus is on
solar electricity and we are proud of thework we do. We encourage everyone tohelp take Hawaii to a cleaner energyfuture.”

With the arrival ofthe summer sea-son and the
expectation of hot, sunnyweather, the painting busi-ness also heats up. IslandBudget Painting owner TedWexler advises that home-owners, who have put offprojects during the winterand spring months because ofconcerns about rain, beginscheduling painting jobs toensure that professional con-tractors can accommodatethem.“It’s never a good idea to
wait until the last minute toschedule a job if you wantthe best service and highestquality workmanship,”Wexler said. “If someonecalls us at the last minute,we do our best to meet their
needs. And we can usuallyfind a way to fit them insince we have a large crew... and we do not escalateprices just because we’rebusy. But it works better foreveryone if we can planahead and spend some timewith the client inspectingthe structure and choosingcolors. In some cases, itturns out that we find ter-mite damage or rot, whichwe will repair if the clientso wishes since we haveskilled carpenters among
our crew. If the job is aninterior, wallpaper removalor drywall work may alsobe involved. We also havethe capability to do con-crete repair, which is oftencalled for with commercialprojects.”Wexler, a licensed,
bonded contractor whohas been in the businessfor more than 30 years, noted that a painter whoshows up at a job site forthe first time and immedi-ately begins painting maynot be the best choice. Hehas had considerable expe-rience over the years withstructures that were notproperly prepped by theprevious painter with peel-ing and cracking as theresult.
“Once I meet the client atthe job site, whether a resi-dential or commercial proj-ect, I evaluate the conditionof the surfaces and providea proposal that may onlycover painting, if that’s allthat’s needed. However, Iwill also note the cost ofprep work to restore theintegrity of the wood ormasonry. A good paint jobnot only lasts, it also pro-tects and prolongs the lifeof the building.”Wexler is a specialist in
color selection and canassist clients in makingchoices and matching exist-ing colors or furnishings, aswell as advise on the bestproducts for the job by tak-ing into account such fac-tors as weather conditions
in the area. His crew is expe-rienced in working with dif-ficult job sites that requirescaffolding and operatewithin the parameters set bycondominiums affectingaccess, parking and timesthat work can be performed.Among the clients of

David Chang and Jonathon Sonremember what it was like toremodel their own homes — how
stressful the process had gotten afterattempting to work with multiple con-tractors, vendors and designers, andhow cumbersome the process became asthey tried to coordinate workflowamong all parties.
It’s the very reason why they eventu-ally founded the locally owned andoperated Cabinet & Stone Factory — sothat no other homeowner would havetheir renovation dreams turn into night-mares.
Today, the men operate a one-stoprenovation company that takes cus-tomers through the entire design/buildprocess — from creating the initialdesign concept to putting the finaltouches on any project. At Cabinet &Stone Factory, there’s one point of con-tact and one point of accountability inorder to keep renovation projectsstreamlined and easy.
“We design it, we install it and we fol-low up,” said Chang. “When you workwith us, we meet you at your home tounderstand your vision, assess the feasi-bility of your project, and determine a
realistic budget. “Our showroom has all the products
you need to pick from to choose whatsuits your tastes,” he added. “We createand design plans for you with our cut-ting-edge CAD software, and once theplans are approved, we manage yourentire construction process, from begin-ning to end.”
The Cabinet & Stone Factory’s mis-sion is to provide the best in service, offering clients a streamlined, account-able and stress-free process.
“Every point of the process is handledwith attention to detail and care for ourclients’ individual needs, to make sureeverything goes as smoothly as possi-ble,” Chang said.

Town & Country Builders LLC. is a licensed generalcontracting design- build firm that has been serv-ing Oahu residents for the past 30 years. The com-
pany, which specializes in custom homes, remodels, addi-tions, designer kitchens and baths and many other con-struction activities, offers the following tips:
Don’t leave kitchen, bath remodeling to chanceOver the years many articles have been written and
advice rendered about remodeling the kitchen and bath-room, areas that are the focal points of our lives. Styleshave changed and materials have evolved, but the daunt-ing task of getting the most value out of our remodelingproject is still important.
Things to considerThere are many
questions for anyremodeling project,and people involvedin the process canleave you feelingo v e r w h e l m e d .There are plans,permits, lead-basepaint assessmentand asbestos sam-
pling (in older homes), and kitchendesign layout to consider. Whatabout appliances? Would you like tobuild the microwave into a cabinetfor better functionality, or are youplanning to relocate the refrigerator?Beyond that, do you want to enclosea doorway? Maybe re-design your
galley-style into a U-shape kitchen with a wet bar? And what about food storage? Food pantries are
essential to large families, and pull-out trays are a must-have.
We have seen too many homes where the cannedgoods are stacked on the floor because there is just notenough space. Would you consider installing a non-porous, non-sealing bateriostatic countertop? Howabout installing a new disposal with a countertop airswitch for convenience?
Time to call a professionalWe are offering exceptional value and quality for all
remodeling projects.

Where quality, value remodeling happens
Do you need to replace thewindows in your home? Ifso, here are a few factors
you should consider when decid-ing on the right contractor.
Quality of materialWhile many vinyl windows
look the same, there is a wide dif-ference in quality. This is the dif-ference between a window thatbreaks down after five years, andone that operates efficiently forthe life of your home. After 16 years in the window
business, Windows Hawaii hasisolated the most cost-effectivebrands that stand up to Hawaii’sweather. The company’s Anlin windows
use Mikron vinyl, which is manu-factured for yachts so that it canstand up to heavy salt exposureand direct sunlight. The windows also are guaran-
teed not to fade or crack. The
glass is double strength(1.5 times the thickness ofregular glass) for bettersound and heat insulations, aswell as protection from breakage.Anlin also uses stainless steel
hardware to better resist the ele-ments.
Energy efficiencyEven without air conditioning,
a good quality dual pane windowcan keep your home at least fivedegrees cooler during the sum-mer months. Reputable windowbrands such as Anlin display theirenergy ratings. This means lowerenergy costs and more comfort. If you use an air conditioner,
you will save 30 percent on yourenergy bill.
SoundLawnmowers? Barking dogs?
Road noise? Anlin leads theindustry in sound protection.
SecurityDo your windows pass
California Forced Entry (CFE)requirements? Do they have dou-ble-strength glass and cam-locks?All Anlin win-dows do.
WarrantyDoes your war-
rant last threeyears? Five years?
At Windows Hawaii, the compa-ny guarantees the installation forthe life of your home. Also, thewarranty is transferable to theowner after you.
EZ clean glass Anlin windows come with EZ
clean glass.
InstallationEven the best-quality windows
will likely leak in the future if they are
improperly measured. So purchasewindows from a qualified contractor, with factory-trained installers.
ReliabilityDeal with companies that have
a proven track record of perform-ance. Windows Hawaii is alicensed contractor and memberof the Better Business Bureau (A+rating). Its installers are fullytrained and experienced in win-dow installation.

Windows are often over-looked by homeowners asbeing a key element to
having a well-rounded and completehome. They protect our curtains, carpets, furniture and floors fromfading and deteriorating. Theyallow us to control the cool tradewinds and ventilate our rooms, while on the other hand they allowus to seal off the outside and let ususe our air conditioners economi-cally. They are our portals to theoutside world, engaging us to enjoyour magnificent Hawaiian views, beit a view of the mountains, the oceanor a sunset. They can enhance thecurb appeal of a home, therebyincreasing its value. They also offerprivacy and noise reduction. But most importantly, they are the
front line of home security.“Sadly, too many of our cus-
tomers come to us after they’vebeen burglarized,” said CCI presi-dent Luis Larcina. “They’re terri-fied that whoever did it mightcome back. While most haveinsurance to replace stolen items, there is no price on personal safe-
ty and peace of mind.”One item that CCI offers for cus-
tomer peace of mind is its fireegress window, which easily swingsout like a door, allowing homeown-ers to easily escape in an emer-gency.“The status quo tells us that
Grandma or Junior has to break theglass of the jalousie window andthen jump out onto the broken glass. That is absolutely ridiculous,” saidLarcina. “That's why CCI was thefirst to invent the egress. Anybodythat doesn't install them is sitting ona time bomb.” Additionally, CCI'sfire egress window meets orexceeds all Hawaii fire codes, andhas been commended by theHonolulu Building Department forits ease and efficiency.

painted a crisp, fresh white andadded six armless chairs that I hadupholstered in a cool slate color.Over the table I positioned a stun-ning pendant chandelier. I alsoplaced mirrored sconces on eitherside of the dining-room windowsand two dramatic torch lights flank-ing the banquette in the living room— all in the same nickel finish.
To unify the two spaces evenmore, I used similar window treat-ments in both rooms: drapes in a flo-ral fabric of gray, tan, brown andteal. I then added a rustic wovenwooden blind in the living room anda lattice roller blind in the diningroom.Using focal-point design, I was
able to turn a bland open space intotwo exciting and harmonious living
and dining areas. The focal pointsnow draw you in and take you on anexciting journey as you movethrough the now-elegant and -com-fortable zones. This once-blandspace is now defined, grounded andthe ideal place for Orla and Brian tofocus on building a life together.

Turning to focal-point design
Because the kitchen is thehub of the home, home-owners are always look-
ing for ways to do more in thisvital space, all while keeping itstylish. One of today’s most popular
trends in new and remodeledkitchens is the use of multiplekitchen faucets, which addextra functionality to the room.“Pot fillers, island faucets and
even bar or conveniencefaucets all help to maximize theroom,” says Kevin McJoynt ofDanze, a manufacturer of deco-rative plumbing faucets and fix-tures. “But convenience andfunctionality aren’t the only
two items homeowners arelooking at while upgradingtheir kitchens. Ambiance, decorand style are also top priori-ties.”
• Pot fillers are located nearyour stove to provide you witha convenient way to fill a potwithout having to carry it to thenearest sink.
• Island faucets help avoidcongestion at the main sink andare a great way to increase akitchen’s workflow. Becauseisland sinks are frequently usedfor preparation, they are some-times referred to as prep sinks.
Functional faucets for the kitchen

iest rooms to update with a few smallchanges. Replacing old, outdated light fix-tures and cabinet hardware can refresh thekitchen or bath without consuming a ton ofmoney and time with a complete overhaul.
Renovate old furnitureUpdating an old chair or table is an easy
way to spruce up a room. If you’re lookingfor new furniture additions, shop localgarage sales and thrift stores for old piecesthat can be revitalized with a little sanding, paint and new hardware.

and organize your plan of attack prior tojumping in. Utilize great resources for DIYtips on www.StartRightStartHere.com.
Build utility storage shelvesBuilding a basic utility shelf is a small
project homeowners can dothemselves to get organ-ized. Planned shelves willput an end to haphazardlystowing away and stackingthings in the garage — notto be found again.
Quick Fix-it Project Ideas
Replace old faucetsOld faucets can make a
kitchen or bathroom lookdated and dingy. Whenchoosing a new faucet, besure that it will work with theexisting faucet drillings, not-ing whether they’re center set, widespread or single-hole.
Repair, don’t replaceTears in window screens
can be a frequent and frustrating problem. Before deciding to purchase a new screen, assess the damage. If the tears are small, fixthem with a screen patch.

We cover a lot of information at our monthly seminar and onetopic is species of wood. A lot of us grew up with flooring madeof Douglas Fir, Maple, or oak. These species are incredibly softand prime targets for scratching and termites. Today there areso many exciting exotics like Santos Mahogany, Ipe, Lapacho,Doussie, Tigerwood, and Cumaru. They are so rich and go wellwith our island décor. And most are at the other end of thehardness and durability gamut. Want to know more?

Here’s how to save time, money
DIY-ersfor
When having a photo-voltaic system (PV)installed on your
rooftop, be sure the job is donewith racking systems and flash-ing that meet the InternationalBuilding Code. Modules, forexample, must be installed sothat the units don’t “fly off theroof” during high winds. Toensure against this, roof penetra-tions are made to secure theracking system for the modules. Each attachment needs to beflashed properly so that the roofdoes not leak. Simply caulkingaround penetration is not anacceptable solution. Most manufacturer warranties
guarantee that after 25 years, their modules will produce atleast 80 percent of what they didwhen first installed. The 25-yearwarranty is not a constructionproduct warranty indicating howlong the module will last. Do notbe confused by what these war-ranties are providing.Studies have shown that the
energy produced by PV modulesdepreciates on average about .7percent per year. Some manufac-turers have a track record indi-
cating a better performance thanthis average. Check to see howlong the manufacturer has beenproducing PV modules. Real module efficiency is
shown by power tolerance, peakpower, or pmax rating. A 230-watt module with a pmax ratingof +5/-5 is telling you that thepanel may exceed the rating or itmay provide less energy, up to asmuch as 5 percent. The modulemay only produce 219 wattsrather the 230 watts listed on themodule. These systems will pro-duce less energy than what youhave been led to believe.Because solar modules sit on
rooftops, they are constantlyexposed to the effects of a corro-sive and harsh environment. Thisconstant exposure to nature’selements impacts the quality ofthe packaging that surrounds the
cells,result-ing inpackag ingdegradation. This affects thefunction andintegrity of the mod-ule. It can also lead toperformance issues such aspoor energy production, array performance failure, andsafety issues that includes elec-tric shock hazard. Examples ofpackaging failures include glassbreakage, metal frame break-down, dielectric breakdown, bypass diode failure, encapsulantdiscoloration, and backsheetcracking and/or delamination.Electrochemical corrosion can beintroduced to the module
because of the failures in thepackaging, causing the degrada-tion of power output/perfor-mance and ultimately modulefailure. Because of Hawaii’sharsh environment, homeownersmay want to know more aboutwhat makes a particular solarmodule sturdy enough to providethe service life expected. Homeowners should also be
wary of sales talk that promotesthe manipulation of the state taxcode by providing you with creditsyou don’t deserve. If you havequestions about the tax code, go tothe state’s Department of Taxationwebsite and learn more aboutrenewable energy tax credits. The purchase of a photovoltaic
system is not only a price issue. The quality of the module, theinstallation/flashings used on theroof, the manufacturer’s trackrecord, and a contractor’s atten-tion to detail should all be con-sidered.Contact Pacific Islands
Construction for a consultationor visit our website at pacificis-landsconstruction.net. Our goalis to provide complete satisfac-tion to customers, now and intothe future, by equipping themwith the finest in solar energysystems.
