JOHN "JACK"J. O'BRIEN, TEACHER, COUNSELOR Age 81, formerly of Honolulu, died July 8, 2005 in Bradenton, Fl. He was born in Kalispell, Mont. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 with the ACORN 34, Pacific Naval Unit. Jack was a teacher, counselor, boxing and football coach at Damien High School for over 20 years and their first lay teacher. A life long educator, he had the special ability to inspire and motivate those around him. He directed a generation of students to higher education, with a special interest towards those young men interested in vocational education, trades programs, and the Armed Forces. He held a fondness for early American and Irish history and the railroad. He reserved a particular respect and admiration for the Hawaiian and Native American Indian cultures & became an Honorary Chief of the Blackfeet Indian Tribe of Montana. Jack was an avid Notre Dame and Damien football fan. He was a humble, unpretentious and practical man. He loved people and the islands. His many stories, newspaper articles and manuscripts remain for the next generation. He was a devoted family man and leaves his wife, Doris; daughters, Monica Mahelona (John) of Kaneohe, Mary Amery of Seattle, Margaret O'Brien, Kathleen O'Brien (Rudy) of Wv, Colette Vaez (Joe) of San Mateo, and Evalyn Mehta (Supriya) of Boston; sons, Tim O'Brien (Susan) of Colorado Springs, Marty O'Brien of Mukilteo, Wa. and Matt Jewell (Manu) of Kona; two sisters, Josephine Hatch & Eileen Cassidy; two brothers, Robert Emmett O'Brien & Tom O'Brien; 16 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren & numerous cousins, nieces & nephews. RICHARD "SCOTT" O'BRIEN PRESIDENT & CEO VALENTI PRINT GROUP Scott, an active community leader will be dearly missed by all those he touched with his kindness, humility, generosity and dedicated service. He was a past President of the Rotary Club of Ala Moana, Past President of Hawaii's Printers Association, Chairman Advisory Board of the Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind, Executive Appointee to the Hawaii State Coordinating Council on Deafness, Member Central YMCA Board of Directors, Special Parent Information Network (SPIN) and a Special Olympics Coach. Scott, 52, born in Chicago, Illinois on June 23, 1952 came to Hawaii in 1978. With a Masters Degree, he immediately held various management positions in the hotel industry. Scott founded O'Brien's Folding Service in 1981, however by 1982, he joined forces with Valenti Print Group. He successfully guided the dramatic sales growth of the company and managed relationships of long-standing business clients for over 20 years, as Vice President of Finance & Sales. Scott became President/CEO of Valenti Print Group January 1, 2005. Scott was a loving

Shigeto Ogawa of Hanama‘ulu, died Feb. 21, 2005, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 81. Born April 22, 1920, in Kapa‘a, he was a plant field and layout man for Lihu‘e Plantation. He is survived by his wife: Kazue Ogawa of Hanama‘ulu; son: Jay Ogawa of Honolulu; brothers: Teruo Ogawa of Hiroshima, Japan, Yoshiaki Ogawa of Hiroshima, Japan, and Hisako Konaka of Hiroshima, Japan; numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. Lt. Colonel Robert George "Dad" O'Hara Age 83, of Kailua, passed away on February 2, 2005. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He enlisted at 18 in Army Air Corps. He was in 318th Fighter Group, (The Barflies) 73rd Fighter Squadron. He was in the 1st Group of Army Air Corps pilots to fly P47's to Saipan off the Navy aircraft carrier, the Manila. He won the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 3 Oakleaf Clusters. He married high school sweetheart Susan Gallagher and came to Hawaii in 1947

for "honeymoon". "Dad" O'Hara was Chief of the Honolulu Tower. He retired from the FAA in 1972. Proud member of the Hawaii Air National Guard and a member of the Quiet Birdmen. Richard Tatsuo Okinaka started as a mail room clerk at First Hawaiian Bank and ended up as the president of City Bank. Throughout his banking journey, though, he never forgot his roots. "Richard was one of the great old-time bankers," said Walter Dods, chairman of First Hawaiian parent BancWest Corp. and the former chief executive of the company. "He started from the bottom and became a senior executive for First Hawaiian, but never lost his touch with the rank and file." Okinaka, 83, who also served on the board of directors at City Bank, died Monday, May 16, 2005 at the Queen's Medical Center. He was preceded in death in January by his wife, Michiko Matsui Okinaka. The veteran banker, who started at First Hawaiian's predecessor, Bishop National Bank, on Sept. 1, 1940, spent nearly 38 years there. He retired as senior vice president on March 1, 1978. Shortly after that, he went to City Bank, where he served as president from 1979 to 1989. "He was a people person," said Wayne Miyao, a City Bank

senior vice president during Okinaka's 10 years at the helm. "He took interest in the employees and he could balance between business development and operations. He really took care of our customers and was well-liked by our customers." Okinaka, born in Papaaloa on the Big Island on Dec. 4, 1921, also served as assistant treasurer on the Iolani School Board of Governors and was involved with long-range planning for the school. He was the founder of the Wai-Kahala Athletic Club, a board member and past president of Organ Donors of Hawaii, past board member of Kuakini Health Systems, founding board member of the Plaza Club Hawaii, and a participant on various committees at Waialae Country Club. Okinaka also served in the Army in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Company K. He earned a Silver Star, two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He is survived by sons Stan and Aaron and one granddaughter. Visitation will be at 3 p.m.Sunday at St. Alban's Chapel at Iolani School, with the service to follow at 4:30 p.m. and the reception at 5 p.m. Attire is casual. Burial will be private. ALBERT MASAYOSHI ONO Albert Masayoshi Ono passed away at home on Sunday, May 22, 2005. married to Dr. David L. Outcalt on July 1, 1956. They lived in Wailua Homesteads since 1997. After receiving her Bachelor's degree in education from Bowling State University in 1956, she had careers as a teacher, real estate sales associate and was Director of Relocations Services for Montgomery of Wisconsin, Inc. in Green Bay when she retired in 1997. While working, she also effectively raised friends for the University of Alaska, Anchorage and the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay during the years her husband was chancellor of those universities. She traveled overseas extensively, especially in support of her husband's work for the International Association of University Presidents. Twice in the early 1980s, she traveled with the Alaska delegation headed by her husband, which negotiated the Alaska-Siberia Medical Exchange.She is survived by her husband David, four children, Jeffrey D. Outcalt (Gail) and Gregory M. Outcalt (Kathy) of Pacific Palisades, Calif., Kevin D. Outcalt (Debbie) of Alamo, Calif., and Eric M. Outcalt (Melissa) of Honolulu, and eight grandchildren.
