Edward Yamashiro, founder and president of Ed Yamashiro Trucking and Ed Yamashiro Building Supply in Kane'ohe, never missed a day of work.He even showed up on the day of his death, Saturday, when he was giving orders to truck drivers and instructions to his staff. He was 80. Yamashiro's hard work and dedication helped create one of the biggest trucking companies on the island. His building supply company was his home away from home, and his children spent their early years at the business, said daughter Patty Yamashiro-Hironaka. "He died doing what he loved doing," she said yesterday. Yamashiro was also known for his generosity and willingness to help people in his community, said Roy Yanagihara, a Kane'ohe Neighborhood Board member. He was always donating supplies for projects and most recently gave paint to an anti-graffiti project, donated material for Eagle Scout projects and provided candy for the Kane'ohe Christmas Parade, Yanagihara said. In 2004 the parade committee wanted to honor him by naming him the grand marshal, but he was too humble to attend, he said. "The Yamashiro family have been very generous to our community but Ed's contributions go beyond the financial and material support he has given to local causes," Yanagihara said. "He personified the aloha spirit. He was both generous and humble, shunning public recognition

for his good deeds. He was one of the reasons that Kane'ohe has the close sense of community that it does." Yamashiro was born in He'eia on July 18, 1924, to Koki and Tsuru Yamashiro, who operated a fruit and vegetable stand where JJ Seafood is today. Yamashiro graduated from McKinley High School in 1924 and held down his first job as a dishwasher at Kress Store while attending school. After high school he was a taxi and Honolulu trolley driver, jobs that would later help him build his trucking business, Yamashiro-Hironaka said. In 1947 he operated the Union 76 gas station in Kane'ohe. In 1955 he bought his first dump truck and he began hauling heavy equipment in 1957, she said. Yamashiro Building Supply opened in 1965. His children were always part of the business, Yamashiro-Hironaka said. The boys started working in the machine shop when they were 5 or 6, she said. "Before I could do anything I was helping him rewire tail lights in the trailer. We all worked every day." Those early years left such an impression on his children that even though their father provided opportunities for them in other fields, "we all came back to the business," Yamashiro-Hironaka said. Chris Kalopodes Jr, a contractor, called Yamashiro a "hard-driving businessman" who didn't let people get away with making mistakes. Others described him as having an imposing personality and smoking 10 cigars a day. But if customers couldn't find what they needed at other hardware stores, Yamashiro had it, said Mike Tanji, a contractor who knew Yamashiro for about 40 years. "If I'm looking for something hard to find, hardware-wise, he was the man to see," Tanji said. On the job every day, Yamashiro liked to make people laugh and he created a nice environment for his employees, said Tiara Companion, an employee. "It's more like a family thing here," Companion said. Yamashiro is survived by his wife of 55 years, Yoshiko; sons Byron, Aaron and Dwight; and daughters Lisa Ann Tanaka and Yamashiro-Hironaka. Vincent Hisaki Yano, a former state senator and prominent Catholic layman who had a key role in the legalization of abortion in Hawaii, died May 11, 2005. He was 83. Yano was a state senator from 1963 to 1970, when he was recruited to seek the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor. He was chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee until 1969, when he moved to the Senate Health Committee. In 1970, the controversial abortion bill was referred to his committee. "The Catholic bishop was stalking the halls, and Vince was a very big Catholic layperson," recalled Tom Coffman, former Star-Bulletin reporter, historian, documentarian, producer and author. "He read intently on the subject and consulted with many people, eventually reaching the agonizing decision that if he opposed the bill, he would be imposing his personal religious beliefs on

Page 20: Hawaii Newspaper Obituaries January 1 - December 31, 2005 · Nakamura Mortuary assisted with the arrangements. Mr. Yaconetti was born Feb. 21, 1935, in Tacoma, Wash. He was a drywall

others. "So, as chair, he moved the bill out of committee, and it was passed by both houses." Coffman believes Yano's position "had an extraordinarily big influence, sort of freeing up others to be for it. It also was a preview of what Gov. (John) Burns had to go through (as a Catholic) before allowing the bill to become law without his signature." In the 1970 campaign, George Ariyoshi became an early candidate for lieutenant governor with Burns, and Yano was recruited at the last minute to run with then-Lt. Gov. Tom Gill, Coffman said. But in the Democratic primary election, Ariyoshi defeated Yano and Burns beat Gill. Yano was raised in Palama in a family of nine boys and two girls. He won a scholarship to Dayton University in Ohio through the St. Louis Marianists but did not have the money to travel to Ohio. The entire Yano clan chipped in so he could get there by boat and bus. He graduated summa cum laude and was valedictorian. He married Eloise Yoshie Takiguchi and they had 11 children. Yano attended St. Stephen's Seminary at Pali and was lead seminarian. He served in the Army from 1946-47 and graduated from Harvard Law School in Boston in 1949. The late U.S. Sen. Spark Matsunaga and attorney Eichi Oki were among his classmates. Oki said he and Yano remained friends for more than 50 years. "He was a man of many talents and interests who lived fully and deeply. "As long as I have known him, he always took things in stride. He was always cheerful and positive, and nothing seemed to faze him. Under his cheerful and friendly manner, there lurked a bulldog spirit, a steadfast determination and a clear conception of the values he set and lived by," Oki said. "Vince to me was a man of courage and integrity, a good man." Yano started the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii in 1952 and worked as a civilian attorney for the Army on Okinawa from 1952 to 1954. He helped start the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC of Hawaii) 40 years ago because of a disabled daughter, and was past president of the Hawaii Association for Retarded Children. He owned Rubber Stamp House for 30 years and had a Taco Bell franchise with seven locations when it was sold. His second wife, Maureen, spent more than 10 years caring for him through failing health and went daily to Kuakini Hospital's Hale Pulama Mau the past five years to ensure that he had the best care. Other survivors include sons Francis, Vincent, Michael, Thomas, Gregory and Robert; daughters Therese, Katherine Aries, Clare Omid-Zohoor and JoanMarie Hughes; brothers Edward, Gus, Kenneth, James, Paul, William and Brian; sisters Dorothy Nakahara and Mary Haruno; and 19 grandchildren. Vincent Hisaki Yano, a former state senator, one-time candidate for lieutenant governor and a retired attorney, has died. He was 83. Born in Honolulu, Yano was a graduate of Harvard Law School and a prominent Catholic who served two terms in the state Senate from 1962 to 1970. He lost to George Ariyoshi in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor in 1970. The father of 10 children with his first wife, Eloise Takiguchi, Yano was president of Rubber Stamp House. He was the first attorney for the Legal Aid Society in Hawai'i and a civilian Army attorney in Japan. He was also a longtime advocate for mentally disabled children after one of his daughters had a disability. Yano was a graduate of Saint Louis School and the University of Dayton in Ohio, both Catholic Marianist schools. He was appointed a Knight of St. Sylvester by Pope Paul VI. His faith played a role in the toughest public policy issue of his Senate career, a bill that ended a century-old law that allowed abortion only to save the life of the mother. The bill, which made abortion a decision between a woman and her doctor, gained national attention since it was thought at the time to be the most permissive in the country. Yano, as chairman of the Senate Public Health Committee, initially held up progress on liberalizing the abortion law but eventually supported an outright repeal. "After much reading and soul-searching, I am personally moving strongly towards the position that the present law should be repealed and abortion should not be a matter of legislation but a question of conscience between mother and doctor," he said. Gov. John A. Burns, also a devout Catholic, let the bill become law without his signature in 1970. Tom Coffman, an author of books on Hawai'i politics, said Yano was under considerable pressure from the Catholic community. "He made the painful conclusion that the law should not impose moral and religious values on people's practices," Coffman said. Yano died on May 11, 2005. His family held a private service. Yano is survived by his second wife, Maureen; sons, Francis, Vincent, Michael, Thomas, Gregory and Robert; and daughters, Therese Yano, Katherine Aries, Clare Omid-Zohoor and JoanMarie Hughes. MUN BUN YIM The family of the late Mun Bun Yim extends heartfelt gratitude to relatives, in Hawaii and overseas, nieces and nephews, neighbors, fellow Hou Chung villagers, and friends, who have sustained him through the years of chronic back pain and disability following his loss of use of the left leg. Mr. Yim was the popular loving uncle to everyone around him. He exemplified loving generosity as well as spirit of independence. Despite being disabled and living alone since the death of his wife, Kar Ming, he lived independently and was generous with his help to others, whom he offered to drive around in his car until he was unable to. Till the very end he insisted on living alone in Chinatown so that his many relatives and friends could easily visit him. His chronic ailments notwithstanding he enjoyed otherwise good health. Hobbling with a crutch he was able to catch a bus and then climb a very steep driveway to photograph his hanai son's house under construction, of which he was very proud. He was content that his large, extended family has flourished andprospered in America. He was born in the fourth district of Chung San, Kwantung, China. He commanded a Nationalist militia company during the
