Sustainability

There’s a movement starting in New York State’s libraries toward building a more

sustainable future for our communities. It started with resolutions passed by the

New York Library Association and the American Library Association, in which we

see ourselves taking a pivotal role in community conversations, so that

communities thrive, bounce back from disruption and are infused with new and

better life for everyone. I’m participating in this venture and will most assuredly

be reporting back to you. To keep up with what’s going on in the State on this,

check out the New York Library Association’s Sustainability Initiative page

www.nyla.org/sustainability.

Library and to you, our community. I’d like to take this opportunity to recognize those

team members whose anniversaries occur during January and February: Stephanie

Alicea, 9 years; Evan Annunziata, 5 years; Yahira Berrios Dela Cruz, 1 year; Elizabeth

Bute, 9 years; Eileen Calcaterra, 15 years; Liju Devasia, 4 years; Patrice Gottfried, 18

years; Tim Heinsman, 12 years; Naomi Goldberg Honor, 13 years; Ken Kral, 2 years;

5 years. That is 128 years of service to this institution and to the community. If you

see any of these folks around, please join me in congratulating them! This recognition

of team members is a regular feature in our newsletter.

A Fond Farewell

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the retirement of

Assistant Library Director Donna Sopalsky. Donna has been a

and service to the library and the community are a model for

us all. Please join me in congratulating Donna, and wishing

her a long and healthy retirement. We’ll miss you, Donna!

See you in the stacks!

Meet Our Library Trustee Patricia Swift Soto

Patricia Swift Soto has been a Trustee of the Haverstraw King’s Daughters Public Library

since 1979. A native of Haverstraw, Pat is a graduate of St. Peter’s School and Haverstraw

High School. Formerly married to Angelo Soto, she has two grown children (Angelo, Jr.

and Marianne Soto King) and four grandchildren (Alyssa, Tommy, Michael, and Matthew

King).

Pat has advocated, along with previous directors and local legislators, for state construction aid and grants to

meet the community’s changing needs. These include building the extension on the Village Library, thanks to

the efforts of late Assemblyman Robert Connor and community development grants. The extension was

constructed to conform to the standards of the historical designation of this beautiful building, obtained

through the efforts of then-President of the Board Thomas F.X. Casey. When the extension could not meet the

needs of the growing population of our special library district, Pat worked with the Trustees, Director, local

developers, and community library supporters to find an appropriate location (present Garnerville site) and

funding to build a new building and plan for future community needs.

Pat has served two terms representing Rockland County as Trustee of the Ramapo Catskill Library System

(RCLS), is currently on the Executive Board of the Library Association of Rockland County (LARC), and is

employed as a personnel administrator at the Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg. She commends the

devotion and support of past and present Trustees and the community. “Thanks to their ongoing efforts,

Haverstraw King’s Daughters Public Library continues to move forward to serve the needs of our very diverse

and tech-savvy population.”
