Admission ContactsDear Friends, We hope your school year has started off wonderfully! We are excited to take this opportunity to celebrate the beginning of a new school year with you. Last year we welcomed Dan Weiss as the 14th president of Haverford and wrapped up an extraordinary and invigorating campus-wide strategic planning process. We are already underway in bringing this plan to life and look forward to the ways this will strengthen and expand our mission. Highlights of this plan include the creation of the Center for Visual Culture and Media, the development of programming around Ethical Engagement and Leadership, and continued emphasis on financial aid and making a Haverford education accessible and affordable. We were thrilled to welcome the Class of 2018 to campus just a few weeks ago. The most diverse class in Haverford’s history by every measure, this class promises to add so much to our community; we look forward to watching their experiences unfold and to seeing how they help to shape Haverford. And of course we are excited to be working with you once again in our shared endeavor of supporting students in this extraordinary process. Haverford is among the few colleges and universities in the United States that practice need-blind admission for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. HAVERFORD MEETS THE

Haverford’s 216-acre campus is a NATIONALLY
RECOGNIZED ARBORETUM and has more than 400 species of trees and shrubs. THE TREE: STUDENT RATIO
IS 3.25:1. The campus landscape plan was originally designed by William Carvill, an English gardener.
There are more than 2,000
CROSS-REGISTRATIONS between Haverford and Bryn Mawr each year. In addition, a small percentage of Haverford students choose to major at either Bryn Mawr or Swarthmore.
Haverford is part of the QUAKER CONSORTIUM with Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore, and The University of Pennsylvania.
Many Haverford students, especially juniors, take advantage of the College’s various STUDY ABROAD
PROGRAMS (over 60 programs in more than 30 countries). Recently, students have studied at the London School of Economics; Cambridge and Oxford Universities; the University of Botswana; the University of Melbourne, Australia; Universidad de Chile in Santiago; and the Sophia University in Tokyo. Haverford also has exchange programs with other colleges, including Claremont McKenna and Pitzer in California and Spelman in Atlanta.

CODES IN THE UNITED STATES and one of very few with a social dimension. Established over 100 years ago, the Code is not a set of rules but a student-ratified, student-run system of SELF-GOVERNANCE
IN BOTH ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL LIFE.
Under the Honor Code, Haverford students are expected to develop and maintain a strong sense of personal responsibility, intellectual integrity, honesty, and genuine concern for others. In academic life, the Code manifests itself in many ways, most notably in take-home tests and unproctored final exams. The Code helps to create a very collaborative academic environment, one focused on learning for its own sake. It is visible early in the life of a Haverfordian; NO FINANCIAL DEPOSIT IS REQUIRED of
students who choose to enroll at Haverford.
Academic Centers fund high-level researchOur three Academic Centers take students beyond the traditional confines of the classroom. Whether research takes place on campus or across the globe, the Centers allow students to design and fund their own high-level scholarship and engage directly with what they are studying in the natural sciences, social sciences, or humanities.
We’re part of the Quaker ConsortiumOur four-college exchange program with Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore and the University of Pennsylvania allows us to retain the strengths of the small college experience, while offering the expanded resources usually found at a larger university. Haverford students can take a staggering array of classes at any of the Quaker Consortium schools.

All students complete a Senior ThesisHaverford is one of a very few institutions in the country that includes a Senior Thesis project as part of every student’s academic program. Students become true scholars, and come to understand at a deep and practical level what it takes to create knowledge and to seek answers to challenging questions.

HAVERFORD’S NATURAL BEAUTY AND EXTENSIVE GREEN SPACE alongside the elegant and simple architecture provide an extraordinary setting for one’s education. A perimeter of woods circles the 216-acre campus that features a duck pond and 2.5 acre nature trail. It is the oldest planned college landscape in the country and marks its 180th anniversary in 2014.
Within walking distance you will find coffee houses, bookstores, pizza and cheesesteak emporia, a broad range of restaurants, and the Bryn Mawr Film Institute. The proximity of Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges gives students easy access to tri-college events and other programming. Shuttle buses run between the three campuses throughout the academic year.

JUST EIGHT MILES WEST OF PHILADELPHIA, the second-largest city on the East Coast, Haverford gives students access to the opportunities of a huge metropolis. Philadelphia provides a wealth of historical, cultural, and social resources, including world-class museums, renowned restaurants, professional sports teams, and venues for concerts and the performing arts. The urban environment is also rich with service and volunteer opportunities as well as job and internship opportunities.

KATIE ULRICH conducted fieldwork in a botany lab in Brazil to research her senior thesis, “Problematizing the Future: Brazil, Biofuels, and Basic Science.”
ROBERT BROOKS will be attending medical school under the auspices of the U.S. Air Force. But his desire to help people through science was partially inspired by his senior research on C. elegans, a worm model organism.
MARLA DOMINGUEZ’s history thesis— “From Migrants in a ‘Host Country’ to Transnational Permanence: Dominicans in New York City, 1965 – 2000”—wasn’t just an academic interest; it was inspired by her own family.
Computer science major DANIEL BARTON went straight from Commencement to a job with Garmin as a Software Engineer.
Chemistry major JEN REEVE’s senior thesis,“Investigations
Into The Fungal Degradation of
Crude Oil,” was an outgrowth of the
work that her advisor, Assistant Professor
Helen White, is doing related to the Deepwater Horizon
Gulf Oil Spill.
History and Russian double major RAYMOND DELUCA was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Russia, where he studied abroad.
MOHAMED ABDALKADER is working for Google, as a Computer Science Academy (CSA) Resident, in their year-long post-college apprenticeship program based at Google’s headquarters.
Political science major ABIGAIL FLYNN’s senior thesis examined the Supreme Court’s influence on state legislative action on the death penalty.
OSCAR WANG is the executive director of Mentor for Philly, a program he started that recruits Philadelphia-area college students to mentor high schoolers as they prepare for post-secondary study.

The Admission process at Haverford College is conducted as a comprehensive, holistic review in which each application is treated personally and individually, with extraordinary care and attention to detail.
At Haverford, we use the Common Application plus a brief Supplement as our sole application for admission.

Haverford’s admission policy is “need-blind” for United States citizens and permanent residents. Our admission policy is based solely on achievements, talents, and promise. A family’s financial situation is not considered. However, Haverford has limited financial aid for applicants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Financial Aid decisions are made according to a need-based allocation formula. For many years, Haverford has provided aid to all admitted students eligible under the College’s formula.

Add personal expenses for books and supplies, clothing, laundry, and recreation. The actual amount will vary from student to student, but for figuring financial aid, we use a standard allowance of $2,662.
Our Commitment Our financial aid policy reflects a commitment to minimizing student debt upon graduation. Students with family income below $60,000 per year will not have loans included in their financial aid package; loan levels for incomes above this line range from $1,500 to $3,000 each year.

Once a student’s loan expectation has been determined, it will not be increased in subsequent years even if family income increases, but the loan expectation can be decreased if family income decreases.
