What to Wear: PE shorts and a top that represents the syndicate colours. No bandanas. Ribbons, coloured hats and face paint may also be worn to match the syndicate colours. Face paint and hair products, however, need to be applied at home and must NOT be brought to school.

Lunch, appropriate shoes, hats, sunscreen, and a bottle of water will be essential, as students will be outside all day. The school tuck shop will be open for lunch orders.

‘sham’ mufti day – Friday 13 April – theme, culture & Identity The new SRC have organised the first mufti day for Friday 13 April (last day of term). The theme is ‘Culture and Identity’. Students can wear costume or an item that says something about their culture and identity. Costume is optional. In order to have the right to wear mufti students need to bring a ‘sham’. That means a non-perishable toiletry item for the local Food Bank – it can be shampoo, conditioner, soap, soap powder, toothpaste or similar. Items will be collected the SRC reps on Friday morning.

Gold SYNDICATE CAMP

Three weeks ago on a Wednesday Gold syndicate went camping for three days. We had lots of fun at Forest Lakes in Otaki. We had an incredible time and it’s all thanks to the parents and teachers. Their support and hard work created the camp of our dreams. So thank you very much. The activities were insane, one on your butt sliding down a fast and exciting mudslide, the next smashing a bofa in someone’s face to get them off a thin wobbly wooden plank two metres off the ground. Or if those were too exiting, cruising on a kayak in a peaceful lake or riding a gentle horse next to the lake. Either way, we all had fun. The food was a true standout. Every meal making me believe that I’m in a 5-star restaurant. Having the option of supper was a lovely surprise, a small snack after dinner had settled. We always had a nutritious breakfast, and thanks to the kind service of our parents and teachers the lines disappeared fairly quickly for every meal. Thank you parents and teachers for taking up your time to make Gold syndicate's camp possible. By Ben H and Ruby B

Gardening Club On Wednesday lunchtimes Maidstone students have a gardening group run by Miss Mills. Each week the students go to the Clyma Park Community Gardens, where we have 4 plots, to weed, and plant seeds or harvest what we’ve grown. Our gardening group planted seeds to grow herbs, carrots, spinach, beetroot, pumpkins, and corn. The food that we harvest is gifted to the food tech room, where they are able to use them in their recipes. Most recently they made pumpkin soup out of the pumpkins we grew. We are really enjoying learning more about gardening and how best to care for plants, as well as getting to help support our community. By Lily M. and Jasmine C., Rm 5

Get on Yer Bike! Three lucky Maidstone students were given a bicycle each on 22nd March by the Upper Hutt City Council. They were donated through a programme called Project Recycle. Project Recycle was set up at Rimutaka Prison to help people learn a skill they can use when they are back in the community. Maui, Cody and Justin received bicycles that look new with a great paint job, and all the parts fully reconditioned. They came with new lease of life; as well as a new helmet! We hope the boys will have hours of fun with their new bikes. Many thanks to David King from Activation for organising this project.

ACHIEVEMENT

Congratulations to Shakiya McE, Room 10, who was awarded a trophy from her Stokes Valley Softball Club for being one of two under 13’s who got into under 13’s Hutt Valley rep travelling team for the first time in 6 years! They played 3 tournaments in Auckland, Whanganui and Lower Hutt.

Get New Zealand Writing – By Brad D. and Kadin V., Rm 5

Get New Zealand writing is a fun way to interact with other schools and to write in a different way. Once completed

we send the different parts to another school in New Zealand, and they send theirs to us! One part of it involves filling out a poster, which includes taking a class photo, writing 6 words we like the sound

of, and writing an 8 letter word in braille - we chose ‘learning’. The other part involves writing metaphor poems about ourselves and then writing a line from them on the back of a

postcard. For example, “Room 5 is a palm tree with fronds reaching for ideas”. When all 32 postcards are put

together they create a poster - see the photo for what this looks like! By Brad D. and Kadin V., Rm 5

Massey University – Child Asthma Study Massey University is conducting a study looking at the different types of asthma in children aged 8-18. The aim of the study is to

improve the understanding of childhood asthma and develop better treatment options for all asthmatics. The study involves a lung function test and a short questionnaire. If your child is between 8 and 18 years old, the researchers would be very grateful if you could take part. They are looking for children with and without asthma to participate.
