Haunted Adventure in Ireland with Katie Manning

Fri, May 1- DEPART THE UNITED STATESDepart your hometown and take an overnight flight across the Atlantic.

Sat, May 2- TRINITY COLLEGE & ST. MICHAN’S CHURCHYour CIE Tours driver/guide, who will welcome you to Ireland. Have breakfast at a local venue with your group before setting off with a local guide who will show you around Dublin. Stop at Trinity College to see the Book of Kells, an 8th century illuminated manuscript of the gospels and see the Old Library. If you look closely you may see the infamous Dr. Samuel Closey, whom roam the halls to this day. During his time at Trinity, it is said Dr. Closey would experiment on bodies or even just parts that he had dug up. Next, visit St. Michan’s Church, which was built on the site of an early Danish chapel. A unique (and, let it be noted, most macabre) feature of this church is the underground burial vault. Because of the dry atmosphere, bodies have lain for centuries without showing signs of decomposition. The most famous of these mummies is what may have been a Norman man from the 13th century, whom was given the nickname, “Crusader” by locals. While vising the tombs, perhaps you will hear the whispers of silent screams of “Crusaders” or one of his fellow mummies, whom are forever trapped in their mummified states. Then check into your hotel and settle in to your room. In the evening, join your fellow travelers for dinner in the hotel restaurant. DINNER & OVERNIGHT: CAMDEN COURT HOTEL, DUBLIN

Sun, May 3- HILL OF TARA & BOYNE VALLEY VISITOR CENTREToday, travel into County Meath and visit the Hill of Tara, seat of the High Kings of Ireland, which was at the height of its power in the early centuries after Christ. It is also the site of a passage-tomb dating from the late Stone Age. Also, believed to be a dwelling place of gods and entrance to the Otherworld of eternal Joy. A major ritual site since the stone age, it became the Seat of Irish High Kings in the early centuries of Christ. Its complex of circular mounds, barrows, ditches, tombs, monuments and banks breathe an unmistakable Aura-an evocative rally point down the ages. Continue on to visit the Boyne Valley Visitor Centre (subject to availability). While here, learn about the nearby passage tombs of Newgrange and Knowth. These prehistoric monuments and exceptionally grand passage tomb built during the Neolithic period, around 3200 BC, making it older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. It is also a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance, much as present day cathedrals are places of prestige and worship where dignitaries may be laid to rest. Return to Dublin, where you are free for individual pursuits and dining. OVERNIGHT: CAMDEN COURT HOTEL, DUBLIN

Mon, May 4- LEAP CASTLE & ROCK OF CASHELLeaving Dublin, drive to Roscrea and visit Leap Castle, which was built in 800 AD by the O'Bannon family. Once the principal seat of the powerful and warlike O'Carrolls who were the Princes of Ely. This castle has long been regarded by many to be the most haunted castle in Ireland. Next, travel into County Tipperary and visit the Rock of Cashel. While you take in the beautiful and serene ruins, note locations dark and spooky past. Some myths suggest, that the ruins were formed by a struggle between St. Patrick and the Devil. The devil while trying to defeat St. Patrick threw a rock from his cave, which became the Rock of Cashel. Another story goes that the devil decided to bite the side of a mountain and broke his tooth, which became the famous rock. After your visit, drive to Cork, where you can check into your hotel for dinner and overnight stay. DINNER & OVERNIGHT: RIVER LEE HOTEL, CORK

Tue, May 5- SPIKE ISLAND & COBH HERITAGE CENTERThis morning, travel via ferry to Spike Island formerly a monastic settlement than used for an army base and prison. Established in the 1850s, its sole purpose was to punish those in incarceration. During its 36 years in existence, it is believed that 1000 convicts died on the island,

according to records. Some 900 prisoners are buried in mass graves on the island, as a result of the lowly conditions and overcrowding subjected upon them. Also, enjoy a picnic lunch on the island before returning to the mainland. Then motor a short distance to visit the Cobh Heritage Center, which depicts the varied history of emigration from Ireland and many European countries to the United States over the past 150 years. Cobh was the last port of call for the "Titanic" and many liners that carried emigrants to the New World. Return to Cork for a free evening. OVERNIGHT: RIVER LEE HOTEL, CORK

Wed, May 6- BLARNEY CASTLE & ROSS CASTLE A short drive from Cork will take you to Blarney. Stop to climb to the battlements of Blarney Castle to kiss the famous "Stone of Eloquence." While kissing the stone is good luck, there is the Blarney Castle Curse to fear. It said whomever, removes even a pebble from the castle, misery and misfortune will fall onto them so respect the castle and you will be safe. Also, visit the Blarney Woollen Mills, which has an excellent range of Irish products. You will also have time to browse around the village, charmingly set around a large village green. From Blarney, journey through the rugged countryside to visit Ross Castle, which overlooks Killarney's tranquil lower lake. Ross Castle was once home of O'Donoghue Ross, an Irish Chieftain and one of the last significant Irish strongholds to fall to Cromwell. It is said that late at night doors can be heard slamming along with sound of whispering but no one will be there. After your visit, check into your hotel. Join your group for Gallery Reading Event with Katie*. After your readings, enjoy dinner with your group at the hotel restaurant. DINNER & OVERNIGHT: KILLARNEY AVENUE HOTEL, KILLARNEY

Thu, May 7- DINGLE PENINSULA & DUN AN OIRToday, discover the beauties of the Dingle Peninsula, once described by the National Geographic Traveler as “the most beautiful place on earth.” Drive along the south shore of the peninsula for plenty of vistas of heathery mountains, sandy stretches of beach, stunning green landscapes and rocky headlands. Pause in Dun an Oir, where you may hear the screams of Spanish Soldiers, whom in October 1580 were defeated and killed by the English. Head back to Killarney, where you can sightsee, shop and dine on your own. OVERNIGHT: KILLARNEY AVENUE HOTEL, KILLARNEY

Fri, May 8- CLIFFS OF MOHER & ST. BRIGID’S WELLDeparting Killarney, travel via Tralee and Listowel to Tarbert, where you take the ferry across the wide mouth of the River Shannon. Drive via Lahinch to view the Cliffs of Moher. This impressive wall of rock rises to a height of almost 700 feet above the churning Atlantic Ocean and stretches for five miles along the coast. Walk along the top of the cliffs to O’Brien’s Tower for views across Galway Bay of Connemara and the Aran Islands on a clear day. Also, keep an eye out for the ghost of Sir Cornelius O’Brien, whom not only had O’Brien’s Tower build but also couldn’t leave the land he loved even after his death. Then drive a few miles to the town of Liscannor to visit St. Brigid’s Well. The well as it exists today, is found within a stone well house where pilgrims continue to leave a great variety of votive offerings. Within the well house is a modern statue of St. Brigid, where people kneel to say prayers and perform other ritualized worship activities. Before Christianity the site was dedicated to Brigid, a Celtic Goddess of Fire so one can imagine the ancient site is a hotbed of spiritual activities. After your visit, drive to your hotel in Limerick and check in. You will have some time to relax or freshen up before tonight’s farewell festivities. This evening, join in the fun and feasting at Bunratty or Knappogue Castle. Your medieval-style banquet is served in the hall of the 15th century castle.OVERNIGHT: RADISSON BLU HOTEL, LIMERICK

Sat, May 9- RETURN TO THE UNITED STATESTransfer to Shannon Airport and check in for your flight. You may do some last minute shopping at the duty free stores before flying back to the U.S.
