    Katie Herrmann of Hartford reaches highestachievement in teaching

    Katie Herrmann of Hartford, anEnglish/Language Arts teacher at

    Hartford Union High School and mem-ber of the Hartford High EducationAssociation, joins 37 other teachersacross the state who have newlyachieved the highest recognition of teaching accomplishment in the UnitedStates.

    As the focus on teacher effective-ness sharpens in Wisconsin, the state’steachers are increasingly showingthey’re doing their part to improvetheir skills and deliver on the promiseof high-quality public schools.

    Wisconsin ranks 20thin the nationin the number of new National BoardCertified Teachers this year. Statewide972 teachers in Wisconsin’s schools arenow certified by the National Board forProfessional Teaching Standards. They

    are among more than 112,000 boardcertified teachers nationwide.

    NEWS & EVENTSSchauer Choirs, Orchestra to

    perform holiday concert Dec. 13Members of the Schauer Choirs and

    String Orchestra will present their annu-al holiday music concert on Sunday, Dec.13 at 2 p.m. The Holiday Concert pro-gram will feature seasonal, traditional,and contemporary tunes for the entirefamily, including When the Saints Go

    Marching In and a sing-a-long of favoriteholiday carols.Under the direction of Abby Bordak-

    Raaflaub, the Schauer Concert Choir has8 members in 4th to 12th grade. TereseHummel directs the Schauer Children’sChoir of 10 members in 5K-3rd grade.The Schauer Youth String Orchestra,made up of 15 students, is under thedirection of Lisa Kitzke. Kitzke is in herfirst year of directing for the Schauer

    Center.Following the concert there will be a

    complimentary reception in the SchauerCenter’s Pikes Peak banquet room, locat-ed on the upper level. The audience willhave the opportunity to meet the per-formers, and to learn more about thechoir and orchestra programs.

    Tickets to the Holiday Concert are $5

    The Hartford Rotary Club andHartford Union High School arepleased to announce that AlyssaHigley, Amy Holzer, and Adam Opichkawere honored recently as RotaryStudents of the Month. The studentswere given special recognition for theiraccomplishments at the HartfordRotary Club’s Thursday noon meetingsduring the month of November.

    Alyssa Higley is the daughter of Diane Einerson. Higley has been activein co-curricular activities while attend-ing Hartford Union High School. Sheis a member of the National HonorSociety and has participated inForensics, the school musicals andplays and the girl’s tennis program atHartford. Higley recently played thelead role of Dolly in the HUHS produc-tion of "Hello Dolly" at the SchauerArts and Activities Center. The HUHSConcert Choir plays a huge role in herlife and in 2015; Higley received anExemplary Soloist Award at State Soloand Ensemble. She has also been amember of the WSMA State HonorsChoir the past two years.

    Higley has given back to her com-munity by volunteering her time everysummer as a program aide at the Girl

    Scout Camp held at Camp WindingRiver. She also serves as Director of the children’s choir at First UnitedMethodist Church in Hartford.

    Higley plans to attend St. NorbertCollege in De Pere, WI. Presently, sheis undecided on her major but mostlikely it will be centered on English.She enjoys all forms of it: reading,writing, speaking, and simply commu-

    nicating with people.Amy Holzer is the daughter of 

    George and Patti Holzer. Holzer hasbeen very active in co-curricular activ-ities all four years at Hartford UnionHigh School. She has been a memberof the girl’s varsity golf team all fouryears and has served as captain of theteam the past three years. Holzer wasalso named the teams MVP the pastthree years. Holzer is a member of theNational Honor Society, the H-Club,the Math Team and the HUHS ConcertChoir, and has participated in GirlsTrack and Field, Girls Softball,Forensics, and the school musicals atHartford. She was selected to be partof the WSMA State Honors Choir in

    2015. Holzer has been a member of the HUHS Student Council all fouryears and currently serves as its

    President.Holzer has received numerous spe-

    cial honors while attending Hartford.She represented HUHS at Badger GirlsState during her junior year. Holzer isan AP Scholar with Distinction and wasrecently named a National MeritScholarship Semi-Finalist. Her peerselected her Homecoming Queen in2015. Holzer has received numerous

    awards in Girls Golf. She was theRegional Tournament IndividualChampion in 2015 and a state qualifierin 2014 and 2015. She was selected3rd Team All-State in 2015. Holzer hasbeen part of the Wisconsin Little TenAll-Conference 1st Team the past threeyears. The Wisconsin Golf CoachesAssociation of Wisconsin selectedHolzer to be on the WisconsinAcademic All-State Team the past threeyears.

    Holzer has given back to her com-munity by volunteering her time at theBoys and Girls Club of Hartford, the AllSaints Meal Program, and CentralMiddle School Forensics meets andSolo/Ensemble Festivals. She has also

    participated in numerous StudentCouncil and H-Club fundraising eventsat HUHS.

    Holzer plans to attend St. College in DePere, WI to stuMedicine with a Major in Biolominors in Chemistry and Spanis

    Adam Opichka is the son oand Jennifer Opichka. Opichbeen active in co-curricular aat Hartford. He is a member of sity baseball team, the NationaSociety, the Math Team, H-Clu

    the DECA and FBLA Clubs. He hon the high honor roll the fsemesters of high school and rreceived an AP Scholar Opichka has also competed in thand National FBLA competitioplaced 1st in Computer Applicathe FBLA Regionals, 2nd Animation at FBLA State, and 3D Animation at FBLA National

    Opichka has given back to hmunity by doing volunteer wVacation Bible School throuChurch, the Boys and Girls Hartford, and the FBLA/Salvation Army Bell Ringing caand the canned food drive Hartford Food Pantry.

    After high school, Opichka pattend UW-Madison to pursue ain Computer Science.

    West Bend Police Blotter The following report was taken from

    records at the West Bend Police Department.

    Burglary• A 42-year-old West Bend man

    reported Nov. 21 that several huntingitems were stolen from his storage unitat an apartment building in the 1300block of Marcia Avenue. This case

    remains under investigation.• Televisions and a computer werereported stolen from a residence in the2100 block of S. 18th Avenue Nov. 23.This case remains under investigation.

    Misuse of 911• A 28-year-old West Bend man was

    cited for misuse of 911 Nov. 26 after call-ing the Police Department from the 900block of Cedar Street, stating he couldnot locate his vehicle and then hangingup on the dispatcher. The identity of thecaller was established and the caller’s

    vehicle was located and he was found tobe a passenger in the vehicle. The callerwas intoxicated and stated that therewas not an emergency.

    Operating while intoxicated• Several subjects were either taken

    into custody or are facing charges forvarious offenses during a traffic stop atN. Main Street and Barton Avenue at

    12:22 a.m. Nov. 28. A vehicle being oper-ated by a 19-year-old Campbellsport manwas stopped for erratic driving. Whenthe vehicle stopped, the driver and threepassengers all fled from the vehicle. Theofficer engaged in a foot pursuit of thedriver who ran into a chain link fence,causing damage to the fence. As thedriver tried to get up, he was tased bythe officer. The driver was taken intocustody, failed the field sobriety testsand cited for operating while intoxicat-ed-first offense and for an ID card viola-

    tion as he had an Illinois driver’s licenseshowing that he was of legal drinkingage. The driver was placed in jail forresisting an officer and criminal damageto property. A review of the squad cam-era system showed three passengers run-ning from the vehicle. One of the pas-sengers who fled, an 18-year-oldCampbellsport man was located hidingunder a vehicle. This passenger was

    found to be intoxicated and was cited foropen intoxicants, underage consumptionof alcohol and an ID card violation as healso had an identification card showingthat he was of legal drinking age. He wasplaced in jail for obstructing an officer.The other two passengers, a 20-year-oldEden male and a 20-year-old Allentonmale, were both identified from thevideo and charges of obstructing an offi-cer were requested on both subjectsthrough the Washington County DistrictAttorney’s Office.

    • A 23-year-old Cedarburg marrested for operating while intothird offense, possession of mand drug paraphernalia and carconcealed weapon at 12:01 a.m. after he was stopped for erraticin the 1100 block of S. Main Stredriver was found to be intoxicate

    the field sobriety tests and was for his third OWI. During the arrsubject was found to be in possemarijuana and a marijuana pipeknife that was tucked in his bmale was placed in jail.
