JOHN DREWRY John Drewry comes from a farming family in Leicestershire, though he himself is a biochemist whose work took him to Cumbria where he first encountered scottish country dancing as part of a local walking group and subsequently (1965) to Aberdeen University.

His first dance, devised on a walking holiday shortly after he took up scottish dancing, was A Trip to Tobermory written on a walking holiday in Mull, which soon became popular. Drewry was recommended by another dance deviser, Hugh Foss, to teach at an early overseas scottish dancing holiday in Majorca, at which he wrote The Faraway Isle. The Wooden Horse A dance for only three couples. Part of Drewry’s Turkish Set. The Blooms of Bon Accord Bon Accord is the motto of his adopted city of Aberdeen and features in the title of a number of his dances, including this one. Aberdeen has won the Britain in Bloom award a record-breaking ten times, this dance was written in 1971 after winning the “in bloom” competition for the third year in succession. Other Bon Accord dances include The Bonnie Lass of Bon Accord, written in response to a recording (by Jimmy Blair) with no starting chord. John Drewry therefore specified an eight bar introduction including acknowledgement of both partner and corner. He is also responsible for introducing a number of new formations, eg The Rondel, the Whirligig and Petronella in Tandem. He also uses established formations in imaginative ways. Others are Belle of Bon Accord and Bon Accord. There is one Bon Accord dance not written by Drewry but by his fiend and fellow deviser Roy Goldring, entitled John of Bon Accord, ie a tribute to Drewry. Tune is either The Blooms of Bon Accord by J Scott Skinner or Cocker Roses by J Scott Skinner The Duchess Tree The Duchess Tree was a lime tree in the grounds of Gordon Castle at Fochabers. It spread to vast proportions and, when measured in 1911, had a girth of 17 feet 5 inches and a circumference of 144 yards. Sadly the tree is no more but was famous in its time and marked on ordnance survey maps. Legend suggests that the Duke of Gordon was required in 1794 to raise a regiment from among his tenants. In order to encourage them to enlist, his wife offered to bestow a kiss upon each volunteer and let it be known that she would wait for them beneath a particular tree. This became known as the Duchess Tree. Tune The Duchess Tree composed by J Scott Skinner who lived for a time at Fochabers. The Bees of Maggieknockater The Bees of Maggieknockater is one of John's best-known dances, inspired by having seen a sign to “The Apiary” at Maggieknockater, a very small hamlet on the A95 a couple of miles east of Craigellachie, Banffshire (sadly the apiary is no longer there). The busy activity of the bees is reflected in the movements of the dance, with the dancers appearing to swarm, changing partners during non-stop reels on the sides. A ceilidh party-piece is to perform this dance in yellow/black striped costumes. One group, where Drewry had been teaching, performed the dance thus attired and to Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee (recommended tune is the Forres Country Dance by Gourlay) Bratach Bana Bratach Bana, gaelic for White Flag was a popular tune and had just had words put to it www.we7.com/#/song/Alastair-McDonald/Bratach-Bana when Drewry devised the dance while hearing the tune on the radio on a solo camping trip in Strontian. The flag referred to is the Fairy Flag at Dunvegan Castle given to the Macleod clan chief by the King of the Wee Folk. In times of dire need in battle the flag could be waved and an elfen army would come to the rescue – or alternatively it came from Constantinople and is from the 11

th century - in 1066, Godred Crovan, (an ancestor of the MacLeods) supposedly seized the flag. and carried it to

Scotland. Tthe flag is supposed to havemagical properties and is to protect the clan three times. It has been used twice, both times by Alexander the Humpback while in fights with MacDonalds of Clanranald – and may already have used the third as in 1938 when Dunvegan Castle was on fire the fairy-flag was carried past the flames in an attempt to save it from harm – and the flames went out as it passed!

The dance as originally published by Drewry included two pas de basques at the end of the promenade diagonally across the dance (bars 27/28) He subsequently re-wrote it as a result of a suggestion to continue the skip change of step for those bars. This is a rare (unique?) example of Drewry changing one of his dances post-publication. NB (Drewry used the same tune for another dance, The Fairy Flag, written 3 yrs later in 1967)

Margaret Parker’s Strathspey Written in 1982 for Margaret Parker, MBE, MA, JP, on her election as Chairman of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. Tune is Prince Albert’s Strathspey (Middleton). Mrs MacPherson of Inveran Includes the figure “"mirror reels of three on the sides with 1st couple crossing over to opposite sides from the top and back to own sides at the bottom", now more commonly known as “Inveran reels”. Written to tune of same name by pipe major George S MacLellan. As well as dancing his interests include photography, house plants, cooking (especially noted for his carrot cake!), and classical music which he finds time for in between publishing 45 books comprising 785 dances.
