Dear Families,

It has been a wonderful start to my time here at Harrison School! The

team have been very welcoming as have the children and it has been

great to get to see the teaching and learning that is happening! A truly

amazing thing that I have learnt in my very short week at Harrison is how

proud and united the whole school is around the school values! What an

amazing platform to build strong learners of the future!

Teaching is my passion – I absolutely love nothing more than seeing what

I call a “lightbulb” moment in learning! I see our job as so important –

growing inquirers who problem solve new ways of being and responding

to challenges is paramount to the learning we do. I have been in

education for over 20 years now, and through this time have always

endeavoured to empower our students as learners – both within and

beyond the classroom! I am passionate about true inquiry learning, and

love to use evidence-based research to support not only our students’

learning, but also our teachers’! We are all learners and can learn from

each other! As an experienced P-10 leader, I am so excited to support our

students and teachers to be agents in their learning – with strong

foundational skills to interact with the world.

I believe that successful schools start with strong relationships – the

partnerships that we create help support our learners to be the best they

can be. As a mum of four, I recognise the immense job that we all have

in building a strong future for everyone – and I work hard to build a strong

community of advocates behind every single one of our students. I

welcome any opportunity to work with each of you to support your child’s

learning.

I would like to thank the Harrison team for all their support over the past

week – it is clear when I walk around and meet our amazing students and

teachers, that inclusion, respect, and integrity are a huge part of Harrison!

Harrison Facebook Page – Coming Soon!

We will soon be publishing our own Facebook page!

Permission notes for this will be emailed home

sometime this week, and the permission required is

different to other permission the school has

requested in the past. We ask that families please

return the permission notes ASAP either via return

email or to either front office.

A separate email will also be sent home this week with

a link to the Facebook page. Keep your eyes peeled.

Paperless Communication

As part of the school’s drive to move towards a more

sustainable/eco-friendly environment, we will be

phasing out the amount of paper-copy notes that get

sent home to families. Almost all of our

communication will now be sent home electronically

via email. If you believe the school has old contact

information such as an email address or phone

number, please ensure you get in touch so we can

update this on our system.

2021 Voluntary Contributions The 2021 Voluntary Contribution note has been

emailed out to all families electronically. If you did

not receive this electronically, can you please let the

school know so we can resend the note home, or

send a paper copy home with your child.

COVID-19 Reminder

A reminder that the COVID-19 pandemic is still with

us and while many restrictions have been eased

since last year, some restrictions are still in place in

our school.

It is important that students stay home and get

tested if they are unwell.

Visitors to our school, including parents and carers,

should sign in using established processes, meet

density requirements of one person per two square

metres, and maintain physical distancing of 1.5m

from other adults. Students and visitors also need to

practise good hand and respiratory hygiene. You can

find more information on COVID-19 and ACT public

schools on the Education Directorate website

STUDENT ABSENCE / LATE ARRIVAL

REMINDER

We would like to remind parents and carers that if

you receive an absence or late arrival text message for

your child/ren, the easiest way to respond (and

approve your child’s absence or late arrival on our

system) is by replying to the text message with the

below information:

• Student Full Name

• Homeroom class

• Reason for absence / if it is parent approved

or not

E.g.

Gareth Richards, 1/2HS, parent approved late arrival

on 01/06/2021.

OR

Gareth Richards, 1/2HS, parent approved full day

absence 01/06/2021.

If you have more than one child, please send an

individual text message for each child.

The second-best method for approving your child’s

absence/s is by emailing

[email protected] directly with the

above information. If you know of any upcoming

leave, we strongly encourage parents or carers to

email the absence email address, as well as the child’s

homeroom teacher to inform them of this. By pre-

empting the school of any upcoming leave, you avoid

receiving the daily text message.

ALL students MUST be signed in and out of the school

by a parent or carer. If you need to add a

parent/guardian to your child’s contact details, please

come to the front office to fill in the appropriate form.

Preschool – Yr. 6 students MUST be signed out from

the main administration office before they are

collected from class.

Years 7 – 10 students MUST be signed in and out by a

parent or carer from the senior office.

FRONT OFFICE HOURS Harrison School Front Office hours are:

Mother’s Day Breakfast Update

Thank you to everyone who attended the Mother’s

Day Breakfast in Week 3. We raised a total of

$1,138.94 towards The Breast Cancer Foundation. A

big thank you to the wonderful volunteers from the

Gungahlin Aurora Rotary Club for supplying their BBQ

and their expertise with cooking. Thank you to the

student leaders and staff who helped with the running

of the morning including the overall setup and cooking

on the BBQ whilst collecting money for the fundraiser.

Thank you to the senior cooking group who made

tasty muffins to sell on the morning and to the

photographers on the day taking snaps of the overall

community spirit shown.

Thank you to our suppliers, Home Grown meats and

Woolworths Gungahlin. Woolworths donated the

bread and money to cover ingredients for the muffins.

A further massive thank you to OSH Club who donated

$500, this covered the cost of the eggs and bacon and

other items needed for the breakfast.

Thank you to the choirs who provided wonderful

entertainment during the morning, and thank you to

YOU; the community, for getting together to make this

year’s Mother’s Day Breakfast such a success.

Carpark Safety and Student Arrival Times

• Carpark Safety during Drop off and Pick up Times:

The school has recently received complaints from

the community regarding student safety in our

school carpark during drop off and pick up times.

We would like to remind families that during school

drop off, students are to only exit the car once the

car has come to a complete stop and is a designated

drop off/pick up zone, or in a designated car park.

There have been reports of some close incidents

where students are exiting the car BEFORE the

crossing and stepping out in front of other moving

cars travelling through the car park. Student safety

is our number one priority, and we need your help

to reinforce this while dropping off and picking up

your child/ren.

• Disabled Car Parks

We would like to remind families not to park in

disabled car spaces unless permitted to do so. There

have been some instances this year where cars are

using these parking spaces without a permit to park

there. This prevents our families who require these

parking spaces from using them. Harrison is an

inclusive school, and we seek your support to

enable access for all students.

• Student Arrival Times

Students are not permitted to be on school grounds

any earlier than 8:30am. Before school duties, the

Page 5: Harrison School Newsletter 1 June 2021 · 2021. 6. 1. · Harrison.Absences@ed.act.edu.au Term 2 Week 7 2021 Tuesday 1 June • Year 9/10 White Card and Asbestos Training Wednesday

front office/s, and our duty of care does not

commence until 8:30am, daily. There have been a

number of students arriving to school before this

time and are unsupervised. We would like to

remind families that we do have a before and

after school care program, run by OSHClub which

commences at 7:00am daily. OSHClub can be

contacted here if you wish to enquire about

booking in your child/ren.

Message from OSHClub

Dear Families,

Crazy to think that we're halfway through Term 2

already!!

So far this term, we have been engaging with a First

Aid incursion. This has taken place on a Monday

afternoon for the past month. The children have

learned a lot of information about what to do in First

Aid situations and have had some practice with

making slings out of bandages. We've also seen an

increase in our cooking activities in each of our

rooms. If you have any child-friendly recipes that

you'd like to share with us, please hand them in or

send them through! We're always open to new and

exciting ideas!

As some of you may have seen, the bookings for our

holiday program are now open. You can add your

bookings via the iParent Portal or simply by

contacting us directly on 0418223198. Our

excursions these holidays will be to the National Zoo

and Aquarium as well as the Kambah Adventure

Playground. We're also lucky enough to have an

interactive science show and nerf blaster warz as

incursions.

We are currently reviewing the medical information

we have onsite for the children. If you are contacted

in relation to any of this, please supply medication or

documentation as soon as possible. It is in your

child's best interest that we have current, up to date

information as well as in date medication. Your

assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

OSHClub
