Harrison Hills City School District Newsletter
Week of 3/16/15 “Home of the Huskies”
DISTRICT OFFICE
Mrs. Snider attended the Rural Appalachian Foundation meeting where a
donation for the STEM program at Central was discussed.
The District Leadership Team met and SRI and effective classroom strategies
were reviewed.
Administration attended the girls’ basketball and wrestling banquet.
Mr. Morgan spoke at the Harrison County Retired Teachers’ Association about
the building project.
IEP reviews were held at Harrison North
PBA assessments were completed district wide
Preparation for EOY assessments ongoing
OGT administration enters week two
Calendar 1 will be recommended for Board of Education approval at the March
board meeting.
Budgets for the 21st. Century and Safe Schools were reviewed.
Mr. Kowalski attended the Straight A Grant meeting where the new bus
equipment was discussed.
Phone system upgrades are currently taking place.
Principal evaluations are being completed with the principals detailing their
professional develop plans for next year. These plans are all completed via the
Ohio Department of Education website.

Harrison East would like to recognize Savannah Gatts and Michaela Palmer for their outstanding
performance at the District area Scripts Spelling Bee Saturday, March 13th. Savannah finished 2nd and
Michaela finished 12th

Ms. Van Camp’s social studies classes have just finished up their Ancient Egyptian unit.
Students thought the most fascinating things they learned were about the
mummification process and how intricate each sarcophagus was carved and painted.
They had watched a video of Osiris “Walk Like an Egyptian” to learn facts about their
advanced mathematics and architectural skills to build such amazing wonders that
remain today. The sarcophagus was a very elaborately decorated coffin the pharaoh
would be placed in after the body was preserved and wrapped.
Mrs. Patterson, Mrs. Nicholson, and Mrs. Yoho attended the Title I Spring
conference in Columbus
Monday, March 16th the BLT met to finalize the TBTs for the DLT meeting
Mr. Tharp and Mrs. McKinney attended the DLT meeting Wednesday, March 18
Tuesday’s professional development was held in Mrs. Sproull’s room with an
eBackpack demonstration on both the Ipads and the laptops. Mrs. Carman and
Mrs. Sproull shared ideas on creating a “Huskie Huddle” program for the next
school year
Mr. Madzia and the preschool teachers met Tuesday and worked on their “Step up
to Quality”

Spring pictures will be held March 31 for Pre-school thru 2nd grade; April 1 for grades 3-6;
staff pictures will be at 8:15 AM on April 1st
Thursday, April 2nd is the district’s first designated make up day. School will be in session.
Easter break will be observed April 3-April 6. Classes will resume Tuesday April 7th
April 23rd 1st grade field trip to Pittsburg to see Peter Pan at the Bynham

PAWS On Thursday, the students at PAWS were treated to a science presentation given by The Ohio State University's Extension Office. Every student was able to participate in the science experiment and all enjoyed the presentation. The after-school program also threw a movie and pizza party for students who earned ten or more "green checkmarks" on our reading and math computer program. Upcoming Events:

implementing “Kick Butts Day” to raise awareness of harmful effects of tobacco
Mr. Gossett’s 9th grade science class was busy applying Newton’s Laws of Motion to
the engineering of a balloon powered race car.

Harrison North Elementary
Highlights
In Donna Carpenter's third grade classroom, third grade students Emily Haney, Kayla Newkirk and Gretchin Dulkoski are checking out the mineral garden growing in their classroom. Students are studying the characteristics of rocks and minerals in conjunction with their reading selection, "Rocks in His Head" written by Carol Hurst.
Third grade students in Donna Carpenter and Louan Demas classrooms, in conjunction with The Ohio State University Extension Office, are studying the life cycle of the chick. Students have explored the parts of a chicken egg and have been able to check out pigeon, duck, emu, and ostrich eggs. The eggs were placed in the incubator last week and candled this week to see the growth of the embryo. A successful hatch is expected within the next 10 days. Here, Hunter Boals and Jaikob Best check the status of the eggs in the incubator.
The Mobile Dentist returned to Harrison North this past Monday. A total of 39 students participated in this program as students received a dental check-up, cleaning, fluoride treatment and dental sealants if applicable. Each student was sent home with a report for parents in addition to a “dental bag” with a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss.
Tuesday’s professional development included grade level team meetings as teams reviewed and discussed the current EOY resources available online for the content areas of math, ELA, science and social studies.
Building principal attended the District Safety meeting at the High School. IEP conferences were held with parents, classroom teachers, intervention
specialists and district rep in attendance. 3rd and 5th grade students were given vision screenings sponsored by the local
Lions Club. A total of 75 students with 6 referrals for a complete vision exam.
Shawnee Arbaugh, Roxane Starkey and Jen Birney attended the March DLT meeting at District Office.
Building Leadership Team meeting was held on Thursday morning.
