(1.) INTRODUCTIONProf. Kawabata of Japan has carried out a great deal of work with the aim of replacing the subjective assessment of fabrics by experts with an objective machine based system which will give consistent and reproducible results.

(B) OBJECTIVE EVALUATION OF FABRIC HANDLE

The second stage of Kawabata’s work was to produce a set of instruments with which to measure the appropriate fabric properties and then to correlate these measurements with the subjective assessment of handle .The aim was that the system would then enable any operator to measure reproducible the total hand value of a fabric.

KES-FB1 INSTRUMENT

SHEAR:Shear properties are measure of inter –yarn friction force, the represent the stability of fabric to withstand inplane mechanical distortion. It measured to a maximum shear angle of ± 8º.TENSILE:A constant tensile force I is applied to the fabric is one direction and the amount of stretch is measured. This isdeformation is called” Strip Biaxial Deformation. The deformation rate is kept constant at 0.2mm/sec.

KES-FB2 INSTRUMENTBENDING :In this test a fabric sample is bent first one way and then in the oppositedirection, as indicated in Figure. The instrument applies a linearlyincreasing bend curvature (which is the reciprocal of the bend radius) to asample of fabric, whilst at the same time monitoring the bending momentdeveloped.
