The Roanoke Skier & Adventurer The Monthly Newsletter for the Roanoke Ski & Adventure Club 1 President’s Message Happy New Year to Our Roanoke Ski and Adventure Club Congratulations on making this past year one for the records. From membership, now standing at 444, and comments received over this past year, it appears that the many ski and adventure sojourns have been well received. Improvements made to our meeting offerings have also not gone unnoticed. Throughout this year your support has been felt and seen most clearly as the numbers came in for our focus charity, Operation Warm. We have substantially exceeded our 2019 goal of $4,000 and plan to distribute some 280 coats this winter season to local needy children. Thank you for your generosity throughout this 2019 Holiday Season. Now, on with the show! As you are no doubt aware the lineup for 2020 is super with 5 new ski trips planned in the first quarter, followed by Portugal, Switzerland and New Zealand. These trips are happening because you asked for them. Coming in January and again in February, you will see the surveys that will hopefully capture your desires for the following year, 2021. Please dream a bit and check you bucket lists for the trip of your life. We are planning for some exotic entries… What would you choose? This January your RSAC is sponsoring the premier of the incredible movie festival presented by REI: a film by Teton Gravity. Our monthly Membership Meeting will be at the Grandin Theater on Wednesday, January 8th. Reception will be at 6:30 p.m. and the showing will be at 7 PM. You do not want to miss this evening! Happy New Year

to

Our Roanoke Ski and

Adventure Club

Congratulations on making this past year one for the records. From membership, now standing at 444, and comments received over this past year, it appears that the many ski and adventure sojourns have been well received. Improvements made to our meeting offerings have also not gone unnoticed. We have substantially exceeded our 2019 goal of $4,000 and plan to distribute some 280 coats this winter season to local needy children. Event Summary:

RSAC Christmas Party Wednesday, December 4th

The Hidden Valley Country Club hosted the Roanoke Ski and Adventure Club annual Christmas Party on December 4, 2019. Approximately 114 members attended this year, which found many familiar faces and some newbies. This venue featured 15 elegant red/white table ensembles topped with red poinsettias center pieces surrounded by several beautiful Christmas trees. Members dined on appetizers before a buffet dinner of salad, salmon, fettuccine with marinara, baked chicken with spinach cream sauce, roasted asparagus with rum raisin bread pudding for dessert. The 15 poinsettias were donated to participants by random selection. Entertainment was provided by DJ Judd Poindexter whose eclectic selections kept the crowd on their feet for several hours, while one lucky member took home $197.00 from the 50/50 raffle. We are looking forward to another year of Holiday Celebration in 2020. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All ! Carol L. Via, Program Director

TRIPS

SKI TRIPS STATE OF THE UNION

All trips are set to go for the 2020 season and by all accounts the snow looks great. Our

first trip to Banff, Canada, led by Jack Orsinger, kicks off at the end of the month.

Following this our Western trips begin, when Marla’s Snowmass and Steamboat groups

(including the two weeker) head to Colorado. These trips are followed up when Steve’s

Big Sky group travel to Montana in March. Let’s all wish safe travel and excellent

conditions for our trips.

Although further off our Adventure trips are in the works. Both Portugal/Duoro River

Cruises are set to go in April. Our Switzerland train and Lake Como, Italy trip and our

New Zealand/Australia trip will take off in September and November 2020, respectively.

Both are full with waiting lists.

And while I know it’s early, we are working on our survey for ski trips to be planned for

the 2021 season. These surveys are extremely important as they form the basis for our

decision making, so look out for our survey in your email. Our Adventure Trip survey

will follow in February. We value your opinion so please do not delay in responding.

Thanks Bill Fleshman Trip Director
