Lets all hope and pray that 2021 is much more kind to everyone. Not only did 2020 affect all Americans, it certainly put a damper on many of the Elk activities and programs. We had to cancel the Elks Hoop Shoot, and it curtailed the Soccer Shoot. It greatly affected our Celebration of Freedom activities during Veterans week. We did not have a parade this year and we did not receive one essay from any of the schools. We did however, go ahead with our chicken and noodle feed for the Veterans. We also delivered 33 ditty bags to the nursing homes for the Veterans there. Our Lodge did receive 3 of the Grand Lodge Grants and we helped some much appreciative organizations. We helped the food bank, the safe house, the angle tree program and CASA. We also rang bells for the Salvation Army on Christmas Eve and raised over $1000. We have increased our membership nicely this year so far. We still have 3 more months to get more new members. I challenge each and every member to bring in a new member this year. It is not hard. Simply ask anyone that you think would be a good member and explain our programs. Preferably one that will get active and help with our programs. In the first week of February, 2021, we will be celebrating our 100 th year as a Lodge. Hopefully, we can have a very large program in the weekend closest to our actual date. All Elks are invited to participate in these activities, which will be announced soon. If you have any ideas for activities, please come forward. Currently El Dorado is #2

in the state, with $2,692.50

in donations. That is

$19.94 per member at this

time. We are currently #66

that is incredible for our

lodge that has 144

members. To donate call

From the Desk of the Chaplain and Editor

Hello my fellow members. I hope this finds all of you well and

I pray that everyone is staying safe and healthy. I pray everyone has a

healthy and prosperous new year. Since 2020 was not the greatest

year. I hope everyone has a much better year than last. New Year’s

dates back 4000 years to Babylon. This was the first new moon after

the Vernal Equinox. This was usually in our late March. This started their

new year. Different countries had different starts to the new year. The

Roman calendar only had ten months and 304 days in their new year. It also started after the

Vernal Equinox. Romulas who was the founder of Rome created the calendar in the eighth

century B.C. The second king of Rome, Numa Pompilias, added two more months to the

calendar, Januarius and Februarius. Over the centuries the calendar fell out of sync with the

sun and fell short. So, in 46 B.C., Julias Caesar, met with astronomers and mathematicians

and they came up with the Julian Calendar, which added 90 extra days. This calendar closely

resembles the Gregorian Calendar that most countries use today. Caesar said that the first

month of the year needed to be January 1, to honor Janus, the Roman God of new

beginnings. The Romans celebrated Janus with sacrifices, exchanging gifts, decorated their

homes, and attended loud, lude and rowdy parties. Pope Gregory XIII made a minor

adjustment to the Julian Calendar, which is now the Gregorian Calendar, that most of the

world uses today. The Julian Calendar consists of 365.25 days. The Gregorian Calendar

consists of 365.2425 days. This adjustment is to correct the inaccuracies caused over the

centuries. Every four years the calendar has leap years to average out the Earths rotation

around the Sun. According to the United States Navel Observatory, the rule of leap year is:

“Every year that is exactly divisible by 4 is leap year, except for years that are exactly divisible

by 100, these centurial years are leap years if they are exactly divisible by 400. For example,

the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 are not leap years, but the years 1600 and 2000 are.”

For most people New Year’s starts the night before, on New Year’s Eve. In Sweden and

Norway they eat rice pudding with an almond in it and whoever gets the almond has 12

months of good luck. Ring-shaped cakes represent that the year has come full circle are

consumed in the Netherlands, Greece, and Mexico. Since pigs represent progress and

prosperity, pork is used in many dishes in Cuba, Austria, Hungary, and Portugal. Legumes

resemble coins and are said to bring financial success are used in dishes in Italy and in the

United States, especially in the South we eat black eyed peas. Many countries have firework

displays and people make resolutions that date back to the Babylonians. One of the biggest

and longest tradition in the United States is to watch the ball drop in Times Square in New

York City at midnight. This event has taken place since 1907 when the original was a

700-pound iron and wood orb with 100 lightbulbs and was dropped from a flag pole after the

city banned fireworks. An electrician, Walter Palmer, came up with the idea. Now the ball is a

12 foot 12,000 pound patterned sphere. At the end of the drop the song “Auld Lang Syne” is

played. This song is a Scottish folk song and means “days gone by.” It was originally a poem

that Robert Burns came across and he partially rewrote in 1788 and put it in a song, which he

is famously known for. On December 31, 1929 in New York at the Roosevelt Hotel, Guy

Lombardo and the Royal Canadians played this at midnight during a live radio broadcast. The

band played this song every year until 1976. Since then their rendition is played on loud

speakers at the end of the ball drop in Times Square.

BIRTHDAYS

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A LIVE RADIO PLAY

On Friday and Saturday, December 11 and 12, and Sunday matinee, December 13, the Act I Players performed It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, a roll and deserts were served for the meal. The drink specials were It’s A Wonderful Life and The George Bailey, they were huge hits. For the three days we had around 100 people. Everyone had a great time and customers told us they can’t wait until the next show. I want to thank some people because without them we could not have put this show on. First I

want to thank the director Misty Maynard from the Kechi Playhouse. Please go out and support her in the new season. Next I want to thank Steve Pickard for the music and our light guy Jaden Shumaker. I also need to thank Marsha Cutsinger and Stan Willis for cooking the meal. John Britt, J.D. Reinhardt, and our servers, Dallas, Ethan, and Ali, that are Deb Kirkpatrick’s grandkids. Darlene Andrews for making the wonderful drinks. The cast consisted of Kandis Shumaker, Brad Zimmerman, Deb Kirkpatrick, Mike Shryock, Angie Morris, Bryson Rogers, Laura Schmigel, Roger Cutsinger, and Patricia Bolton.

We are in the process of raising money for the upstairs and the Act I Players are planning our new 2021 season. If you would like to donate or help us remodel the upstairs for the dinner theatre, please contact Roger Cutsinger. We will take all the help we can get.

Thank you to everyone for supporting the local arts, Break-a-leg Sean Cutsinger

SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGING Christmas Eve, members of the El Dorado Lodge rang bells for the Salvation Army. It was a very cold day but we all had fun. I was surprised at the generosity of the public. During our day we raised $1,024.41. We

handed out candy canes to the youngsters. This was the first year I have done this and I’m so thankful that I did. The other bell ringers were Loren Anthony, who organized everyone, Leon Leachman, Roger Cutsinger, Rodger Decker, Rick Kennedy, Jim Masters, Lauryn Arasmith and her sons, Gage and Clay Arasmith.

Thank you so much to all these wonderful people. Sean Cutsinger

CUTSINGER CHRISTMAS We rented the Lodge for our family Christmas. My parents, Roger and Marsha and myself fixed ham, potato casserole and green bean casserole and a salad for dinner. My aunt Deb fixed cranberry salad and made several deserts. I fixed the bar area up to make it more home like. We opened gifts and

after we played games into the evening. Sean Cutsinger

NEED LODGE HELP

We are in need of your help for Thursday night bingo. Everyone, this is what keeps the lodge open. This is what pays the bills. Right now there are just a handful of members doing every-thing. We also need kitchen help at bingo and the plays. You wouldn’t have to help every single week but we need all the members who are capable and in the area to please step up. If you want this lodge to succeed then please help out. Thank you,

Sean Cutsinger
