PRIMETIME Dion Brown Associational Missionary
O ne of the reasons that the Pharisees and the religious leaders rejected Jesus was because they were highly
nationalistic and could not come to grips with the idea of a Messiah who was not concerned about making sure Israel became the greatest nation on the planet. They had made a good life for themselves and the one thing that
would make it better would be to get the Roman government off their backs. So when Jesus insisted on hanging around tax collectors and other lowlifes they could not reconcile His behavior or His words to their patriotic theology. Weren’t they God’s chosen people? Didn’t the prophets foresee a day when all the nations would bow and acknowledge their superiority, the righteousness of their cause and their God-given destiny to rule the nations.
Yet God had told them that they were to have no other gods before Him and they were not to make any idols for themselves. Jesus exposed their worship of a lesser god, the god who was the nation, Israel. To make an idol is to take a created thing and look to it for our sense of worth, security or hope. Jesus' acceptance of those who were conspiring with the Romans to drain away the wealth of the nation, revealed that the Pharisees loved their money and comfort more than the neighbor God had told them to love. If they were unwilling to keep the second most important command, then they were automatically in violation of the first. You can’t profess to love God with all your being and then refuse to do what He says.
By now it’s obvious where this is going. I’m afraid in many ways the evangelical church in America is a second coming of the Pharisees. I say that not in judgment but in confession. I’m guilty. In many ways I’ve bowed my knee to the American Dream instead of to the King of kings and this pandemic has exposed me. One of the ways that we know that we have an idol in our heart is how we respond when it is threatened or taken away. If there is an abiding anger, loss of hope or a sense of despair at the thought of that thing being taken away, then it has assumed the place of a god in our life.
Since you haven’t tossed this aside yet, may I ask a few questions? If China takes our place as the number one country in the world, can we bow to God’s choice? If the election doesn’t turn out the way we want, will we trust our Lord? If we should lose the rights we have inherited as Americans, will we choose to uphold our responsibilities to our King? If the economy doesn’t rebound will we consider it to be more blessed to give than to receive? Can we love and accept those who disagree with us as to the best course for our nation? Will we still believe that God is work-ing all things together for our good if the things that give us comfort are taken away?
If these questions bring about a sense of anger or a gloom of despair then it may be that there is something that has captured our affection other than God. I mean no disrespect in saying this, but the Lord doesn’t need America to be great in order to accomplish His purposes. Nor is our comfort and security a sign of His blessing or the thing that proves His love. Our greatest hope is to be found in Him.
The Pharisees were sure God was on their side and they were on His, yet Jesus’ most critical words were leveled at them. Even so, they refused to repent and turn to Him. May we not be found standing in their place.
