SENIORS
HANDBOOK Season 2014 – 2015
SUMMER SEASON 2013/2014 REPORT
By Susan Taylor
Yarra Ranges Athletics ventured into the world of Senior Competition in the 2012-2013 season.
Our club is the first to be affiliated with both Athletics Victoria and Little Athletics Victoria.
Our senior and junior athletes train together and are governed by the one committee.
The uniform is very similar with only the AV and LAVic logos differing.
The Little Athletics uniform can be worn by our juniors at senior competition.
As part of the Athletics Victoria “White Zone” for the Summer track and field season, our athletes
competed at Nunawading, Ringwood and Lakeside last season.
Competition is usually held on a Saturday afternoon but there are occasional twilight or Thursday
evening meets.
We entered teams in U14W, U18W, Open W, 40+W, U14M, U16M, U18M, Open M and 40+M.
Our 40+W qualified for the finals by placing 2nd but were unable to contest the finals due to work
commitments. The U18M held 2nd place until the second last round and then fell to 3rd. All other teams
were competitive in their divisions and with a few more members should finish higher this season.
Once again numbers were fairly steady with many PB’s and records achieved every week.
As well as regular weekly competition our athletes also entered Athletics Victoria Championships.
Following on from performances in November at Victorian All Schools and in February at Victorian Junior
we saw 9 athletes compete in March at Sydney Olympic Park in the Australian Junior Championships.
These athletes were Lucas Taylor U20M, Samuel Gunther U20M, Jack Videion U18M, Aiden Pace U17M,
James Laven U15M, Molly Dixon U17W, Lateisha Willis U15W, Lee Taylor U14W and Lily Peacock U14W.
The standout performance came from Lateisha Willis where she won Gold in the 200m Hurdles and
Silver in the 90m Hurdles. Lateisha is our first national medallist at senior level.
WINTER ‘XCR’ SEASON 2014 REPORT
By Jamie Strudley
The 2014 winter season has been a busy, exciting, rewarding and successful season for Yarra Ranges
Athletics culminating with the final round of the XCR14 season at the Tan relays on September 20th.
It all started with the hosting of our Lillydale Lake “but not as you know it” Fun Run in April. Our first
foray into holding a fun run open to entire local community was very successful with large fields, very
positive comments from competitors and the creation of a great event to hold on an annual basis.
From there we launched head first into the Athletics Victoria XCR14 season. This is 9 rounds of Cross
Country & Road Events, including 3 relay events. As with all things Athletics Victoria, the emphasis is on
inclusiveness, participation and achievement. In 2013 we struggled to field one team in any event on the
calendar, this year at the opening event, Jells Park cross country relays we entered 6 teams. The
undoubted highlights were our first ever team win with our Under 14 girls team winning their grade and
our first ever Open Women’s team entered of Sue McCall, Amanda Branson and Amanda Laven.
That trend continued as we consistently fielded teams in most grades throughout the season. By mid-
season we had cemented ourselves as a club with a growing list of athletes who were all enjoying
themselves. In round 5 (road relays at Sandown) we entered a staggering 13 teams (3 Open Womens
teams, Women Under 20, Under 18, Under 16, Under 14, 3 Open Mens teams, Men 40+, Men Under 16
and Men Under 14). As our athletes became more comfortable with the emphasis on participation and
achievement, we realised the competition was fun and everyone enjoyed themselves at each round. Tea,
coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits under the tent after each event helped to finish off the day, and
reward the enthusiastic support crew.
The increase in participation also led to further round wins. Our Womens U14 team have 4 round wins
(with 1 still to race), Div 7 Men won Round 3 at Brimbank Park, Div 4 Women won the Round 5 Road
Relay at Sandown Park and Div 5 Men won the Round 8 Half Marathon at Burnley.
Athletics Victoria have clubs competing in divisions that provide for competition between club teams
who are at a similar level, our open men’s teams compete in Division 5 and 7, our open women’s teams
compete in Division 4 & 5. At the road relays we won or placed in Women Div 4, Women Div 5, Men Div
7 and Women Under 14.
Part of the Athletics Victoria XCR season is a premiership within each grade. With the season now
drawing to its much anticipated conclusion at the Tan Relays we are a good chance of a top 3 finish in
several grades. We are extremely proud to be able to acknowledge our Under 14 girls team who have
won their grade’s premiership. This is an outstanding achievement and the result of consistent
performances by our Under 14 girls, Lily Peacock, Brooke Mullins, Ruby Dixon, Lee Taylor and Zoe Sibley.
It also represents Yarra Ranges Athletics first Athletics Victoria premiership and, coming from our
younger athletes, suggests it will not be our last.
To cap our awesome season of we had 4 club athletes selected to represent Victoria at the Australian
Cross Country Championships held in Albany, WA in August. All the athletes, Lily Peacock (10th Under 14
Girls), Brooke Mullins (50th Under 14 Girls), Harrison Van Duuren (51st Under 14 Boys) and Georgia Laven
(8th Under 12 Girls) ran exceptionally well. We are very proud of their achievements.
A big thanks to the many who have helped, especially Lynn Strudley, Susan Taylor and Ron Veenendaal,
with timekeeping, recording and officiating when needed, and to our support crew for consistently being
the noisiest and most vocal at each event. The athletes are truly thankful and grateful for your time and
support.
We now look forward to the summer season safe in the knowledge that XCR15 will be another exciting 6
months for Yarra Ranges Athletics, starting with our Fun Run on Sunday 19th April 2015. We look forward
to seeing you there!
WHAT IS SENIOR TRACK AND FIELD ALL ABOUT?
2014-15 sees a revised program for athletes. Athletics Victoria have expressed a desire to encourage
more athletes and spectators to attend the weekly events. The intention is to encourage more of the
elite athletes to attend with the hope that the races will provide better viewing for spectators.
The “social” athlete has not been forgotten, with the graded events structure from 2013-14 continuing
into the 2014-15 season.
This structure enables any athlete of any age (over 12yo), and any ability, to compete against themselves
and other athletes at a similar standard. Unless you want to, you will not have to race Sally Pearson, out
jump Steve Hooker or have Dani Samuels throw 2-3 times farther than you.
Instead you have the opportunity to enjoy competing as you attempt to best yourself and other athletes
at a similar level. For example, if you aim to jump 3 metres in long jump, the graded event schedule will
ensure others jumping will be the same standard as you. If you aim to jump 8 metres in long jump, you
compete at a different time of the day with other athletes at that level.
What could be more fun? How about being part of a team graded to be against teams of a similar level,
contributing to the overall team results each week and for the season. That’s how our individuals
competing come together with team goals and team support. Every athlete counts!!
Yarra Ranges Athletics is exceptionally proud of our reputation as the family club, being able to compete
for a team and support fellow club and team members is what makes athletics much more enjoyable.
This season there are 8 rounds of competition from October to January held at venues within the White
Zone region, predominantly at Nunawading and Ringwood. The first 5 rounds will only include clubs
from the White Zone. The final 3 rounds will include White Zone clubs and the clubs of one other zone
each round. Athletes will then have the opportunity to represent White Zone in their grade at the Zone
final (if White Zone makes the finals for that grade).
Athletics Victoria is introducing a rankings system, viewable online. Now you have the opportunity to see
how compare against all the other athletes in Victoria, more motivation to train and stay active, but also
confirmation that athletics is fun, inclusive and participation based. How good will it be to tell your
friends (or kids) that you are the 345th ranked discus thrower in Victoria, and they could have a ranking
too!
The other reason for the ranking system is to provide for the “knockout competition”. Run over 3 events
athletes are entitled to enter based on their ranking for each event and grade.
If it all sounds a little confusing, it becomes very simple once you start competing. Register at
www.athsvic.org.au, turn up at Nunawading on October 11th and re-live the fun you had as a child
throwing stuff, jumping into or over things and running around in circles.
It really is easy and fun, come and try!
