HANDTHERAPYHand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb, which includes the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder girdle.

A hand therapist is a nationally registered occupational therapist or physical therapist who, through advanced continuing education, clinical experience and integration of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, has become proficient in treatment of pathological upper-quadrant conditions resulting from trauma, disease, congenital or acquired deformity. Through skilled intervention, therapists improve function and increase an individual’s independence to return to their normal daily routine. A hand specialist may also have advanced certification as a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT).

Hand therapy is a program specifically tailored for hand and upper extremity injuries and post-operative procedures including:

• Customized splinting• Upper extremity post-surgical rehabilitation• Wound and scar management, desensitization and sensory re-education• Broken bones or other injuries• Treatment of arthritic conditions, including joint protection techniques and adaptive devices• Sports injuries • Upper extremity strains/sprains/tendinopathies• Manual therapy techniques• Work Conditioning/Functional Capacity Evaluations/Impairment Ratings
