4-H PLEDGE

I PLEDGE MY HEAD TO CLEARER THINKING, MY HEART TO GREATER LOYALTY, MY HANDS TO LARGER SERVICE,

AND MY HEALTH TO BETTER LIVING, FOR MY CLUB, MY COMMUNITY, MY COUNTRY, AND MY WORLD.

Theatre Arts Workshop - Imagination in Action

NEW THEATRE ARTS CLUB

The Hancock County Extension and Outreach hosted a Theatre Arts

workshop on September 21st. Have you ever looked through a magazine,

glancing at the many pictures of people, when one grabs your attention?

You are drawn in, and find yourself taking on that character. You imagine

what your life would be like if you were that person. Board the Bus to

Imagination in Action, was the workshop we held for our new Theatre/Arts

program. 10, 3rd—6th graders attended and created a character based from

different magazines. They got to dress up as their character and create a

story about their character. They also made a puppet or avatar to represent

their character. The kids found out that the “tone” of your voice can change their character to many

different people.

Be looking for this same workshop in Britt after Christmas break, as well as a 2nd session of Theatre/Arts

in Garner.

Afterschool Kids Club - Farm Animals

DISCOVERING PETS IN 4-H

Pigs, calves, chickens, sheep, horses,

dairy cows, and wild animal furs.

What do all of these have in common?

These are the animals that have

attended and been talked about in our

After School Kids Club meetings for 3rd

and 4th graders at the GHV & WH

schools. We have learned about what

these animals eat, where they live, and how to take care of

them.

One of the things the kids most en-

joyed was getting to meet some of

these animals up close and personal!

We had 5 special visitors this semester.

Otis the pig, Ali and Abby the cow and

calf, Patches the sheep, and Princess

the horse.

We will be ending our session with learning about pizza from

the farm to the table and animal feeds and how they are

mixed. We enjoyed sharing stories of animals that we have

seen where we live.

New Session of ASK—Crime &

Spy Adventures

Watch for spring Afterschool

Kids Club registration after

Christmas break. Nikki Renner

will be teaching the spring 8

week session and we will learn about crime scene investiga-

tion! Registration materials will be sent home from school

and available on our website.

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE & FIRST TECH CHALLENGE Our Jr FLL teams the Busy Bees, Master Builders, LEGO Master

Builders and our LEGO Storm are also working on ways to learn

more about Creature Craze. They need to look at Bee’s in a

whole new way, they will find out what making honey really

means. The Jr FLL team’s goals are to:

Study what are the jobs of a bee;

What they produce; and who lives in their habitat

Then show what you have learned through your LEGO®

model and Show Me poster

They will show off what they have learned at an EXPO at NIACC

for the Regional FLL Tournament in December. Be on the look

out for our Mock Tournament to check out what FIRST LEGO

League is all about.

Tis the season for Jr. FLL, and FLL

competitions. This year’s topic for

Jr FLL and FLL is Animal Allies and

Creature Craze. Our FLL teams

need to solve a problem concern-

ing animals and present it to the

judges on tournament day, along

with programing their robots to

help LEGO animals. Some animal

solutions the teams are working on

are; dog parks, a website for new

dog owners, how to keep pigs com-

fortable, and different ways to protect our sheep. Our teams

are traveling to compete against other FLL teams across

Iowa. What FIRST LEGO League teams accomplish is nothing

short of amazing. It’s fun. It’s exciting. The skills they learn

will last a lifetime.
