Juanita K. Hammons Hall, now more than ever, depends upon support from individuals and businesses in our community to assist us in continuing to bring the best in the performing arts, entertainment and arts education to our patrons. Funds donated to The Performance Society help pay the cost of presenting the artists who appear at the Hall; help provide master classes, seminars and residency activities;

and help with the operational costs associated with the facility.

When you become a member of The Performance Society, your contribution is recognized throughout the season with special mention in the Hall’s season program, as well as through The Performance Society Annual Fund of the Missouri State University Foundation. Higher level donors

receive additional benefits, including vouchers to exchange for tickets, advance notification of performances and invitations to special receptions.Contributions to The Performance Society help keep ticket prices at a reasonable level — many times, prices charged for cultural events do not cover even half the artists’ fees and expenses! Gifts are fully tax deductible, minus the benefits at each level.

Your generous gift allows the Hall to attract quality artists who will enrich the lives of the students at Missouri State University, as well as citizens throughout the community. If you would like to join other supporters of the arts — and of Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts in particular — by becoming a member of The Performance Society, call the Missouri State University Office of Development at 417-836-4143.

With a combined ten IBMA Awards in 2008 and 2009 – including entertainer of the Year for two years running and Album of the Year in 2008 – Dailey & Vincent have been called by The New York Times “…the most celebrated new bluegrass act of the last few years.” Their inaugural rounder records release Brothers from Different Mothers debuted at No.1 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Album chart and even cracked the top 50 on Billboard’s Country chart. Headed by Jamie Dailey (formerly of Doyle Lawson’s Quicksilver) and Darrin Vincent (formerly of ricky Skaggs’ Kentucky Thunder), the band’s true strength lies in the uncanny harmony of their vocal trios and quartets. Combine that with Dailey & Vincent’s impeccable arrangements and flawless performance, and what you get is bluegrass gold!

The inventive and daring Aquila Theatre company returns to Hammons Hall with a “Dream” you won’t soon forget – an imaginative interpretation of Shakespeare’s timeless comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The play deals with the universal theme of love and its attendant complications, told through the trials and experiences of two sets of lovers, the Fairy King and Queen and their servants, and a group of rude mechanicals attempting to stage a production for the wedding of the Duke of Athens. At the heart of the story is the Fairy King’s servant – the impish Puck, whose magic creates an endless supply of mirth, mistaken identity and inappropriate (if not absolutely ludicrous) passions. This production has been praised by The New York Times as “Timely and pleasing…this ‘Dream’ soothes the eye and tickles the funny bone.”

The Missouri State University Department of Theatre and Dance and its award-winning musical theatre program bring the magic of a classic Christmas to WinterFest weekend with three performances of White Christmas, a musical based on the Paramount Pictures 1954 film of the same name. The show tells the familiar story of a successful song-and-dance team who become romantically involved with a sister act and team up to save the failing Vermont inn of their former commanding general. Favorite songs include “Happy Holiday”, “Sisters”, “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing”, “Snow”, “We’ll Follow the Old Man”, “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep” and the title tune – Irving Berlin’s most famous song, and the most recorded Christmas song of all time.

Montana rep once again presents the work of an American master – Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright William Inge’s Bus Stop, a warm and affecting comedy that examines some of the many faces of love. As down-home characters interact in a street corner restaurant during the course of a hilariously turbulent night, extraordinary qualities are revealed in seemingly ordinary people. Frustration, tears and laughter result as characters are forced to confront their own motivations. romance blossoms, and love banishes loneliness. As demonstrated in this winning tale of insight, tenderness, soulful understanding, great heart and rollicking, life-affirming humor – a lot can happen in a single night!

New Orleans’ own Hot 8 Brass Band has epitomized that fabled city’s street music for more than a decade. The band plays the traditional Second Line parades, hosted each Sunday afternoon by Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, infusing their performances with the funk and energy that makes New Orleans music loved around the world. Members of the Hot 8 have toured internationally; the band performs annually at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, world and jazz festivals across the U.S. and europe, and was featured in the Spike Lee documentary When the Levees Broke. The band’s members were born and raised in New Orleans and many began playing together in high school. What makes the Hot 8 so special is the sound they coax from their well-loved, well-worn horns. An evening with Hot 8 is like no other!

At the world premiere of his Te Deum, Berlioz enjoyed one of the great triumphs of his career. The church was packed and the audience was overwhelmed by the performance. The genre Te Deum, the great hymn of praise and thanksgiving, is among the most ancient extant items of Christian musical worship. It received special settings throughout the Middle Ages and renaissance, and since the 17th century has been the basis of many grand, festive compositions. Hector Berlioz’ Te Deum debuted in Paris in 1855. It was composed for two large choruses, tenor soloist, and an organ – performing from opposite ends of the performance hall. Berlioz assembled an “army” of performers for the premiere at the Church of Saint–eustache, a spacious 17th century edifice. More than a century and a half later, Berlioz’ Te Deum stands as one of the ultimate ceremonial pieces of all time. It is still a major event when performed today – as the Missouri State University Music Department brings together the talents of the University Symphony and its combined choirs to present this timeless Masterwork.

Based on the beloved children’s books by Tomie dePaola, STreGA NONA the Musical is the tale of a friendly, magical witch who strives to cure the everyday ills of a tiny Italian town. Problems arise when a local lug, Big Anthony, sneaks a peek at Strega Nona’s magic book and uses Strega Nona’s magical ways for selfish means. When Anthony fools with the magic pasta pot, and can’t figure out how to turn it off, pasta threatens to engulf the whole town – unless Strega Nona can save the day! Featuring an energetic score, the use of traditional Commedia dell’arte, and a set design inspired by the Strega Nona pop-up book, this enchanting production illustrates the importance of the adage “be careful what you wish for, lest it come true” – and that you can’t judge a pot by its pasta! This performance is recommended for grades preK to 4th, ages 4 - 9.
