quick menu tip

To quick-soak your beans, there’s a trick, it works with all beans: put them in a pan, cover with plenty of water and bring to the boil. Boil for 1-2 mins, then turn off the heat and leave standing, covered, for 1 or 2 hours. Drain. Now add 1 ltr water to the soaked, drained beans and bring to the boil. Turn down and simmer for 40 mins or until tender.

Put the oil in a pan on the hob, when hot, put in the whole dry chilli. It will darken and puff up, so quickly put in the garlic and stir. Then pour in the beans and their liquid, the bay leaves, origano, thyme, paprika and salt. Stir to mix and simmer uncovered on low heat for 20 mins. Check for seasoning and adjust if necessary. Serve with rice and greens, or in a soup bowl with some chopped parsley and crusty bread.

-225g dried black eye beans, (soaked overnight or quick-soaked)-2 Tbsp olive oil-1 dried red chilli-3 garlic cloves, finely chopped-2-3 bay leaves-1 tsp dried origano-a small bunch of fresh thyme, finely chopped-1 tsp paprika-1 and 1/2 tsp salt

The three storey wall sits at the end of The Canteen’s deck, in Stokes Croft, facing one of the city’s last remaining Bankys, and is something of a local landmark.

Fri 1Hot Tin Roofs Stylish sextet exploring the point where swing met jump blues and rock and roll began to take shape - think Slim Harpo, Ruth Brown and that kind of hipster.

Sat 2 Soul Ingredients This powerful gang of seven packs a big band punch thanks to its all-star line-up. Expect original soul and R’n’B with slick groves and big brass flourishes

Sun 3 Mike Willox Magnificent Seven mainman reveals his inner lounge lizard as he takes his solo in the spotlight to explore his wide-ranging repertoire of jazz tunes and arrangements.

Wed 6Little Arrow Edgy pastoralists from Wales making ‘bitter sweet nu folk’ with disquieting lyrics concealed in pleasing harmonies and light touch musical folksiness.

Thu 7Moonlight Saving Time Emily Wright’s perfectly judged voice in an ever-intriguing duet with Nick Malcolm’s pure-toned trumpet.

Fri 8 Me and My Friends Not sure who’s the’me’ in this quintet- singer/guitarist, clarinet, cello, bass and percussion create stylish chamber-folk tapestries and elusive songs.

Sat 9PDR Formerly known as Punk’d Royal this German power-pop trio are bringing their jangling dance-fuelled music on a brief UK tour.

Sat 16

Magnus Puto From their origins in a fusion mish-mash of beats and styles the Magnus Puto sound has increasingly refined itself around a straight-to-the-point pleasure principle distilled from equal parts rocksteady reggae and stadium rock. Sun 17

FiFi Fiddle & Joff Lowson Here’s a proper way to celebrate Paddy’s day! The splendid folk partnership between FiFi’s soaring fiddle and Joff’s banjo will transport Hamilton House to the coast of Donegal in the space of a 32-bar reel (which may be how you make your way home).

Tue 19Paul Bradley uniquely creative solo performances combining guitar, vocals and the musical alchemy of loop technology into spontaneous music and song. in a class of its own.

Wed 20

Baker Boys The swinging jazz legacy of the late, great Django Reinhardt has never been more sought after, so this coming together of two of our top exponents of Gypsy jazz guitar - Dave Archer (Moscow Drug Club) and Harry Sankey (Modern Gypsy Jazz Quartet) - has to be a jewel in the local scene.

Thu 21 The Duckworths this lot perform their strange and surreal songs with whimsical aplomb and musical dexterity. There’s always a smile in there, albeit a Gothic one.

Fri 22 Pseudo Nippon Is Peter Caul turning Japanese? Tue 26The Schmoozenbergs music from gypsy campfires and Paris cafes where the name Django has nothing to do with Quentin Tarrantino.

Wed 27Dave Perry Trio Cool and contemporary jazz outfit with nimble saxophone exploring original material and ably supported excellent double bass and redoubtable drumming.

Thu 28Al Scorch Amiably bearded banjo player on a visit from Illinois with a down-home country soul sound and an easy-going attitude that belies some fearsome fingerpicking moments.

Fri 29

Ruby & The Vines The remarkable Binisa Bonner’s voice and bass guitar might make her a riveting front-person for this trio of Londoners but the intricate web woven by Greg Sanders (guitar) and Ben Assiter (drums) is integral to their success. Ruby & The Vines make tripped-out Afrobeat grooves and compelling narrative vocals in a class of their own.

Sat 30Fur LIve hip-hop has many forms but few as tidy as the stuff Fur lays down. The jazz-smart music is tight and arranged to perfection, the lyrics roll sweetly along with the kicking post-funk beats, there’s all kinds of m flavours from Addis to Bamoko, and it all adds up to a feast for feet and ears.

Capoeira is an exciting mix of martial art, dance, theatre, music, song and ritual from Brazil. The Bristol group is part of the international Grupo Capoeira Filhos de Angola (Children of Angola) run by Mestre Laercio. Although capoeira is a martial art, the emphasis is on skill and humour rather than brute force, and the music and dance elements combine in the games of capoeira to create a high energy performance.

The classes all run in DMAC’s amazing dance studios, and we have regular visits from our master, Laercio, and irregular visits from Mestres, Contra-Mestres and teachers from the UK and Brazil.
