Matt Deegan

- Editor

Artist of the monthDelia Whitbread

“In my decorative glasswork I often use a strong formal geometric element. I enjoy making abstract

work that uses line and form to create balance with movement – this involves working both with, and against, the tyranny of sym-

metry. However in narrative work I prefer the medieval figurative tradi-tion of strong colour and distinctive stylized graphic imagery.”

August MUSIC @ THE CANTEEN FREE ENTRY - BUT PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY TO THE MUSIC BUCKET!LIVE MUSIC MON-THURS 9:30 -11:30PM | FRI & SAT BANDS & DJS FROM 9:30-1:00AM | SUN LIVE MUSIC 4:00-6:00PM

Fri 1

Soul Ingredients - This powerful gang of seven packs a big band punch thanks to its all-star line-up of seasoned players and the mighty vocals of Pete Coggins.

Sat 2 TBC..

Sun 3

Dai & The Ramblers - Here’s a folksome sound rambling down the M4 from That London in the shape of acoustic 4-piece led by Dai Price with an implausible set list.

Mon 4

Canteen Jazz Sessions - An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

Tue 5

Twelve Months of Summer - Monthly showcase of the best acts from the acoustic scene pulled together by the sparkling Miss Rosina Buck (who is one such herself).

Wed 6

Mike Collins Quartet - Pianist Mike Collins always delivers thoughtful, spacious jazz originality with a distinct European flavour in many of his lyrical compositions.

Thur7

Dakhla - Uniquely fabulous (or fabulously unique) acoustic drum & brass outfit that summons the spirit of Balkan wedding bands and New Orleans marching hip-hop with Charlotte Ostafew’s amazing baritone sax swinging funkily throughout.

Fri 8

The Recks - So - what sort of music do they make in Sark, the tiny and famously car-free Channel Island? To judge by their finest musical export The Recks pretty much anything goes, from psych-folk to electroswing and louche cabaret. Multi-genre peculiarity is what they claim and that’s exactly what it is.

Sat 9

Wormfood feat. Golden Boys & Dj Remi - They just want you to dance, you know, so they’ll give you almost anything you want, beatwise, from chirpy Afropop to bleeping electrodisco and raunchy urban funk grooves topped by sassy theatrical vocals with a distant echo from the Pet Shop. It’s a silver-tongued persuasion and you won’t want to resist.

Sun 10

Redhillbillies - Sometimes you don’t need to do anything to a classic song except give it respect and do it right. That’s clearly the Redhillbillies’ philosophy and they rustle up a fine acoustic Country’n’Western sound.

Mon 11

Hip Hop Session - Guest MCs and musicians join the rhythm section of the ultra-funky Groove-iST collective for a monthly exploration of all things hip (and, indeed, hop).

Tue 12

Schmoozenbergs - Don’t know where they got that monicker from but they got the music from gypsy campfires and Paris cafes where the name Django has nothing to do with Quentin Tarrantino and everything to do with swinging beats!

Wed 13

Rival Attraction - Hard-hitting jazz fusion quintet playing classic grooving numbers from the likes of Yellow Jackets, David Sanborn and John Scofield

Thur 14

Richard O’Brien - Sometimes even the most disciplined of bass players just has to let it all out, and this Mango Factory/Murrumbidgee twangster is no exception.

Fri 15

Hermigervill - Oh Lordy but this lot are wondrous strange! Imagine you were stuck in Iceland with only battery operated synth toys trying to make a party soundtrack that will please hipsters and grannies in equal measure … who you gonna call? Hermigervill, natch, because a) they live in Iceland and b) that’s exactly what they play.

Sat 16

Hot Sprockets - There’s a hard-rockin’ streak running right through Ireland since the time of Gary Moore and Phil Lynott but it’s rarely found such a steel-capped bunch of exponents as the fivesome line-up of Hot Sprockets who riff it till it bleeds (and then some).

Sun 17

Molly Miranda King Quartet - Taking classic R’n’B and Gospel songs as her starting point, ace jazz vocalist Molly shows another equally impressive side of her talents in this more soulful setting.

Mon 18

Canteen Jazz Sessions - An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

Tue 19

Daniel Schamroth & Andy Watts - Devonian Daniel Schanroth calls his style Indie Acoustic, which accounts for a rocky edge in his tunes, while multi-instrumentalist Andy Watts also makes soundtracks which might explain his songs’ filmic openness.

Wed 20

In Place of War: Voices of the Revolution - For the second year running we’re proud to welcome ten artists from around the world to join with some great local musicians in celebrating the unifying power of music in the face of armed conflict. What’s remarkable is that the touring musicians are all from war zones themselves - including Zimbabwe, Syria and the DRC - where making music can be a vital and subversive business.

Thur 21

Uncle Ecstasy + Evil Usses - You will SOOOO like these two one-offs, assuming your ears are open wide enough to encompass the free-thinking musical mischief they perpetrate.

Fri 22

Los Mercenarios - Let’s talk heavyweight funk with jazz attitude. Or dub. Or Latin, likewise? This well-established outfit delivers the lot with all the credibility you could wish for.

Sat 23 Special Guest!

Sun 24

Quirkish Delights - A small band with big ideas and a world of inspiration, combining the musical talents of Chris Powell (guitar/vocals) and Gina Griffin (violin/vocals) with a heap of stagecraft and unlimited imagination.

Mon 25

Slimline Henry - Henry Slim’s dust-voiced Americana comes complete with backporch fingerpicking guitar and lonesome harmonica howl and takes you straight to a Mississippi crossroads or a Kentucky campfire.

Tue 26

Jez Hellard - Man of many parts Jez Hellard writes and sings and plays a fine guitar. He’s a brilliant harmonica player, too, much in demand in bands like Kalavela and accompanying the great Rory McLeod.

Wed 27

Andy Christie - Welcome return of this jazz pianist, formerly of this parish, who’s lately released a new album ‘Imaginary Friends’ with his smokin’ quartet.

Thur 28

Chirimoya - After her band Tamco coolly despatched cult pop songs, singer/percussionist Tammy Payne now heads into the hot Nu Yorican Latin ferment of Tito Puente and Jerry Gonzales to reclaim tunes ‘from Hendrix to Britney’.

Fri 29

Cut Capers - Hard-driving hip-hop beats, jumping ska and great brass make the soundtrack for some multi-lingual duelling by MCs Eloy Sinser and Mark Pearce.

Sat 30

Uzimon - Famed as much for onstage antics as his music, dancehall lyricist Uzimon took the grooves from his Bermudan roots to downtown New York to make a wacky one-off video. Thus Uzimon was born in 2007 and became an East Coast reggae star. This tour was funded by a Kickstarter campaign that raised over £5000 with pledgers getting a stick-on copy of his ridiculous beard.

Sun 31

Marie Lister & James Ladd - Duval Project vocalist Marie Lister somehow catches all the soul of great R’n’B in the most stripped down acoustic setting, thus blending perfectly with the gumbo savour of bluesy N’Awlins that wreathes around James Ladd’s rolling guitar and downtown voice.
