What is the general name for the elements found in group 17?
Hint:
Halogens are know to be “salt formers”
The halogen category are the red high lighted group it consists of F, Cl, Br, I, At
Fluorine and Chlorine
Elements that combine with hydrogen to harm the ozone layer.
Chlorine!
This element is added to city water supplies to kill bacteria and is used for bleaching your laundry.
Fluorine!
This element is a know carcinogen (causes cancer) Yikes!
Used in toothpaste to prevent tooth decay and is added to water supplies in cities.

Why do we need Iodine?
A deficiency of Iodine can cause the thyroid muscle to expand to trap as much iodine as possible. This is called a goiter. Side effects of it can be weight gain and sluggishness. In women that are pregnant, it can cause the infant to have extreme and irreversable mental and physical retardation, called cretenism.
