The HemoCue Hb 201+ SystemThe HemoCue system consists of a portable analyzer

and disposable microcuvettes containing dry reagents.

Hb 201+ Microcuvettes

• Serve as a pipette, test tube and measuring vessel• Contain an exact quantity of dry reagent• Hold about 10 µL of blood• Package size:

– Vial: 4x50

Hb 201+ Cuvette Storage

• Room temperature (15-30°C, 59-86°F) in a dry place– Unopened vial: good for two years from date of

manufacture– Open vial: three months

• Record date opened on vial

Hb 201+ Analyzer

• Powered by AC adapter or 4 AA batteries– ~100 -150 hours on battery power– Beware of “replacement” AC adapters from

outside sources.• Troubleshooting

– Error codes are displayed for various potential malfunctions or conditions.

Hb 201+ Analyzer

• Automatic self test– Verifies functioning of instrument

– Failed selftest = error code

• Measuring range 0-25.6 g/dL• Analyzer-to-analyzer variation: ±0.3 g/dL • Measuring time: 15-60 seconds

Performing a patient test

• Pull out slide holder to ready position• Press left button to turn on analyzer• Analyzer performs a selftest• Once selftest passes, analyzer will

display 3 flashing dashes• Fill a cuvette with sample• Place the cuvette in the cuvette holder• The result is displayed within 15-60 sec

Quality Assurance

• Instrument Control

– ”SELFTEST” on start-up and every second hour if the analyzer is turned on

• System Control– Liquid Controls assayed for the Hb 201+ system for

regular control of the system are available. Use if required by local guidelines

– Most AZ WIC clinics are not required to run liquid controls

Hb 201+ Maintenance

• The cuvette holder should be cleaned on the days of testing with a mild soap solution.

• A dirty optronic unit should be cleaned with the HemoCue Cleaner, or if not available, a cotton swab moistened with water may be used.

• The cover may be cleaned with a mild soap solution.

Troubleshooting

• If the analyzer detects a problem, an Error Code will be displayed on the screen.

• Please see page 20 of the HB201 Operator’s Manual to determine cause and suggestion steps.

• Please contact HemoCue Technical Support if you are unable to clear the error code. – For Technical Support: please call 1-800-426-7256

• Have all supplies ready.

• Make sure that the cuvettes are “in date”.

• If opening a new vial of cuvettes, write the date opened on the vial.

• Have the analyzer turned on and the cuvette holder in the outer position. The display will show three flashing dashes and the HemoCue symbol.

• Take a cuvette out of the package. If a vial is used, make sure to replace the cap immediately.

• The patient should be seated.

• Make sure that the hand is warm and relaxed.

• It is best to use the middle or ring finger.

• Fingers that have rings on them should not be used for testing unless the rings are removed.

• Clean the fingertip with alcohol.

• Wipe off the alcohol with a clean, dry, lint -free wipe, i.e. Celltork wipe or gauze, or allow to air dry completely.

• Prior to performing the puncture, “prime” the fingertip by applying pressure at the upper joint with your thumb, using a rolling motion towards the tip of the finger.

• Prick on the thumb side of the chosen finger. This allows the blood drop to rest on top of the finger for collection into cuvette.

• Prior to activating the lancet, press it firmly against the finger on the surface facing upward, as shown in the picture. This will aid in obtaining a good sample.

• After the puncture has been made, apply gentle pressure as needed to extrude a large drop of blood. Do not “milk” the finger!

• Release the pressure on the finger and wipe off the drop with a dry lint-free wipe.

• Wipe away an additional one or two large drops.

• Hold the cuvette opposite the filling end and insert the tip of the cuvette into a large drop of blood.

• Hold the cuvette in place until the entire teardrop shaped cavity is filled with blood. It is not enough to fill the eye of the cuvette!

• If the cuvette is not completely filled, discard and use a new cuvette. Do not add blood to a partially filled cuvette!

• Wipe off the excess sample from the outer surfaces of the cuvette with a lint-free wipe, i.e. Celltork wipe, as if wiping butter from a knife.

• Be careful not to touch the open end of the cuvette with the wipe. (This may cause blood to be removed which could produce an erroneous result.)

• Place the filled cuvette in the cuvette holder. This should be performed within 10 minutes after filling the cuvette.

• Push the cuvette holder to the measuring position.

• The hemoglobin value of the sample will be displayed within15-60 seconds.

• The result will remain on the display as long as the cuvette holder is in the measuring position.

(If operating on battery power, the analyzer will shut off after approximately five minutes.)

• Dispose of the lancet, cuvette, and other biohazardous material as required according to local policy.

• When testing is completed for the day, turn off the analyzer, remove the cuvette holder, and clean with a mild soap solution.

• Dry the cuvette holder completely before reinserting into the analyzer.
