‘From the Amir al-Muminin Abu Hafsa ‘Umar Ibn al-Khattab( الله رضى عنه )’,that he said, I heard the

Messenger Of Allah( ) saying, ‘Actions are only by intentions, and every man has only

that which he intended’. Whoever’s immigration is only for Allah( وتعالى سبحانه ) and then his immigration

is for Allah( وتعالى سبحانه ) and His Messenger( ). Whoever’s immigration is for worldly

gain which he can acquire or women he will marry then his immigration is for that for which he

immigrated. [Bukhari, Muslim]

BackGround oF Hadith: Shaan-e-Wurood

It has been mentioned that one of the reasons for this Hadith being mentioned that Hazrat

Abdullah ibn Masood (radi Allahu anhu) states that there was person in Makkah who was called

a man of the Qais or „Muhaajir Umm-e-Qais‟, When prophet( ) ordered to Hijrat

towards Madina . He had sent a proposal of marriage to a lady called Umm-e-Qais. Umm-e-Qais

set a condition for marriage to him. She said that she would marry him, only if he migrated to

Madinah, then she would marry him. He was the 1st person who migrated to Madinah for

marrying her and they both made Nikah. This was thus made clear that if a person intends to

make hijrat for Nikah, even though he goes to Madinah, but his actual reward will be for Nikah

as he migrated only for marrying to a lady not for Allah(سبحانه وتعالى)‟s sake.

Importance of this Hadith: This hadith is mostly taken by so many scholars at first in their Ahadith’s collection as Imam

Bukhari( عليه رحمةاهلل ) also started his Hadith-collection with this Hadith & many other major collection of

books e.g. ‘Riyad-us-Saliheen’ الصالحين رياض also started with this same Hadith, Usually scholars bring

this hadith in the start of their book even though if it’s may not part of their collection of Ahadiths or

directly connected to Ahadiths they compiled because books of Ahaadiths are structured in a very

logical way, Even though this Hadith is not connected with other Ahadiths following but mostly

muhadditheen bring this Hadith in start of their book. Reason is that this hadith talks about

‘Neat(intention)’ ; that every action we do; has to have a neat/intention behind it. So it is admiration,

reminder to student, reminder to teacher and listener as well if you are beginner to this work of

learning Hadith, or if you are going to teach then it should be the 1st lesson to be learnt. The best lesson

which we lesson from this book is ‘NEAT’ why we want to learn Hadith.

Explanation

There can be Two types of actions

1. Done with tongue

2. Done with body parts(Jawahir)

Intention

Neat is function of thought, mind and heart

One can have three types of actions either Good, Bad, Neutral

And there can be three types of Neat(intentions) behind these actions either good, bad or Neutral as

shown in figure 1

All actions done by us totally based on our intentions. It is logically, rationally impossible that

actions based on other things than intentions.

Figure 1.0

Good Action

Example from daily life: Cleanliness of home, body (taking bath etc) Though every 1 likes to keep clean his environment, living-area and body but it’s a great chapter of our

faith and part of our Iman.

1. Good Action+ Good Intention = Good(BEST Result)

Wearing Clean Cloths and Using Scents

In the light of Hadith: ‘Cleanliness is half of Iman’

‘Obeying of Allah( وتعالى سبحانه )& His beloved Prophet( ) as in following verses

of Surah Al-Muddassir we see Allah( وتعالى سبحانه ) saying to His Messenger( ) to

wear ‘Purify cloths’.

Instructor: Harime Hammad Page 4

Notice that apart from commanding the Prophet ( ) to start inviting others towards the Oneness of Allah (SWT) and Glorifying and Pronouncing the Greatness of Allah (SWT), he is also commanded to purify (or cleanse) his clothes!

End Result 1: While wearing cloths if we keep intentions that Allah(s.w.t) wants us to wear clean and

purify cloths it would not only benefit for us in our this life e.g. we feel good ourselves and for others in

our family too but also our Ibadaat, prayers would not be rejected.

End Result 2: Also if we try to keep purify ourselves it would also cause of getting ‘Allah ( وتعالى سبحانه )’s

love as we see in following verse of Surah-Al-Baqrah it is stated:

Verily, Allah loves those who are most repenting, and loves those who keep themselves

pure.

Use of fragrance (perfume) is strongly recommended in Islam to the point

where it is recorded in traditions that the Prophet ( ) used to apply it

before assuming the state of Ihraam.

Narrated 'Aisha (RA) I used to perfume the Prophet ( ) before his assuming the

state of with the best scent available. [Bukhari]

End Result: While using scent (for married ladies) if we use with intention that as our Beloved

Prophet(S.A.W) wants us to use it then we not only get reward in this world e.g. husband would

be happy from his wife, other females 2whome we meet; would smell nice fragrance instead of

any dirty smell but also its be Obeying of Sunnat-e-Nabwi( ).

2. Good Action + Lack of Intention

1. Using Scent/ Halaal Perfumes (Alcohal Free)

2. Wearing purify/Good Cloths

For one’s self-satisfaction, for one’s own pride and happiness

End Result—Not good at all Nothing /No Reward at all

Give anger to Allah(s.w.t) as we know He dislikes Pride.

Also it’s against HolyProphet( )’s way of life because he used to say: العجزفخرى “Humility/humbleness is my pride ”

3. Good Action + Bad Intention

Using Scent/ Halaal Perfumes(Alcohal Free) Wearing purify/Good Cloths

1. For impressing/attracting others males-Namehrams

2. For impressing friends(females, girls etc)[RIYAA]

End Result= Very Bad

Putting on perfume and going out with the aim of letting non-mahram men smell it. This is

haraam, and is a major sin.

It was narrated from Abu Moosa (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and

blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If a woman puts on perfume and passes by people so that

they can smell her fragrance, then she is such and such,” and he spoke sternly - meaning an

adulteress. Narrated by Abu Dawood (4173) and al-Tirmidhi (2786); classed as saheeh by Ibn

Daqeeq al-Eid in al-Iqtiraah (126) and by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

“And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance” [al-Ahzaab 33:33]

A more detail about the bad-results of bad intention while using scents/perfumes is given in

following links.

What is Neutral Action:

I chose the example of ‘Teaching as Neutral action’.

Teaching: It is always considered a ‘Good Action’ but it is also solely depends upon ‘Intention’ with

which one is going to teach students. Otherwise if any-one teaching such subject that is not adding any

value for any1’s ‘deeni benefit’ then it only left as neutral action where neither teachers getting any

reward nor students.

Remember! Our HolyProphet ( ) is always considered as BEST TEACHER, He

has no Professional degree. He spent his whole life for sake of spreading ‘Islam’. Then think why we

don’t keep consider this aim ‘Spreading true message of Islam’ while getting any worldly knowledge?

Here question comes How to gain Deeni Benefit from worldly Education?

As all teachers only have grip and focus on their subjects e.g. Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Zoology, all

branches of any science-subject , math-subject, ECON-subject branches , Accounting& Finance branches

etc etc But if all teachers of such subjects while delivering knowledge of these subjects, also just spend

few minutes in their daily lectures on ‘Purpose of Life’ just for awakening-up their students then think

why our deen wouldn’t spread out among other foreigners. How wouldn’t name of Allah, Quran be

taken out among highly qualified scientists, doctors who have NO FAITH (IMAN) …? I know it can’t be

implement, it’s so difficult to convince elders& youngsters too but one thing is really being missed and

neglecting highly when all of Pakistani’s students focus only on their tests, exams, FUTURE CAREERS,

SAVINGS, HOUSE/PROPERTY Making etc they spent most of their life without having knowledge and

practicing of Obligations of Islam.

All of we know very well that still our banking-system not according to Sharia & Islamic Law, from last 60

years where are going BBA, MBA, Accounting Finance officers if still it couldn’t be implemented if still

people have ‘saving accounts’ and when there would be ’ Haram Money’ then how purity of actions can

be get? Again, here most of the people are unaware about Halaal/Haraam when they eat profits from

their saving accounts. If any worker of banking-staff raise his voice against this and convince others then

it would be easy to implement so here comes ‘this noble Intention while doing bank job’.

And, here the action of ‘Teaching’ can give best result in terms of Deeni benefit if student learn any

technical education with aim for getting any authority, high-post, high-rank only for working for Deen-e-

Islam ( e.g. calling others towards good); neither solely for his family nor for his own heartily-

satisfaction. And here our University Teachers can play as best role themselves by producing highly

qualified students with ‘Love for Allah( وتعالى سبحانه )& His Prophet( )’s aim of life; by

showing their-own examples before students’ instead of only producing ‘High-quality student capable

of working with Developed high-tech foreign companies’ because students obey teachers very carefully

especially in case of assignments, works etc.

Instructor: Harime Hammad Page 7

When all teachers would be complete pattern of ‘True Muslim’, automatically students would be like

them and would realize real-aim of life.

Because these students are any country’s assets and when there would be only Western Books in their-

hand then how they would know what is wrong, what is right? So, here only teachers can guide to

students while delivering lectures…as all people don’t get Islamic doze…it should be given by teacher’s

personality in class.

All our course books that we have studied during our whole-student life, especially when student get

admission after FSC in any university..in that period of life they learn and avail opportunities for

scholarships so here they can get ‘Deeni Benefit’ while studying in any foreign university as their Islamic

personality itself would be preach ….

Neutral Action+ Good Intention = Good (BEST Result)

1. Teaching any subject + (Serving of Deen)

End Result best in case of ‘developing any habit of sunnah in students’

2. Teaching any subject + Intention of molding student’s mind for Islamic thoughts

End Result best in case of ‘showing right-track to students’

Neutral Action + lack of Intention=No Result

Teaching any subject + only for teaching because I have degree, because I have to earn for sake of

happiness of my family or for sake of supporting my family or for sake of any good worldly rank etc

End Result= Adequate not so good as can be good if only have intention ‘For sake of Allah( وتعالى سبحانه )’s

will ’: As don’t have intention for sake of any single Deeni cause so no-reward at all while going for teach

Neutral Action+ Bad Intention= Bad Result (No reward here & hereafter)

Teaching any subject + For sake of misguiding students by teaching them and convincing upon wrong

philosophies of west culture or for displaying, show-off knowledge so students can inspire or get-

impressed from teacher.

End Results Devil’s happiness + Allah(s.w.t)’s angriness + disobedience of HolyProphet(S.A.W)’s sunnat
