Dear Northern New England Region Members,

Shalom! I hope that you had an enjoyable summer with time to enjoywhat you like to do with family and friends. My family was blessed

with the birth of my second grandson, and I am very grateful.

The Hadassah highlight of my summer was attendance at Hadassah’s98th National Convention, “The Power of Our Dreams,” in Atlanta. Together with nearly 950 other Hadassah members and supporters, we listened and learned, laughed and cried as presenters from aroundthe globe shared Hadassah’s achievements and challenges with us.

Professor Zeev Rotstein, the new director general of the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO), thanked us for our devotion, partnershipand caring for Israel, Jerusalem and HMO. The majority of the victims injured in the more than 400 terror attacks that have occurred in Israel in the past year have been treated at Hadassah Hospital, with most ofthese cases resulting in lives saved and families restored.

We heard about Hadassah’s “bench to bedside” translational medicine, where HMO physician-researchers make their learning and experience a two-way street – saving patients’ lives while making groundbreakingresearch discoveries. Their scientific papers and clinical trials have aworldwide impact, and “Research in Service to Humanity” is much morethan just the name of Hadassah’s newest fundraising campaign.

There is much more to share with you from Convention. Please click onthe links in this newsletter where you can view Convention videos andmake a donation to Hadassah. This is your opportunity to be a part oflife-saving research that will benefit people around the globe. You canalso donate by ordering the brand new Endless Beginnings necklace byclicking on the link below. It is inscribed with a quote from Hadassah’sfounder, Henrietta Szold, “There is no ending that is not a beginning.”

So as one year ends and another begins, I wish you and your familiesshana tova – a healthy and happy New Year! I hope that in this new Jewish year you will attend Hadassah programs and think about how you can make a difference. Volunteering is beneficial to your emotionaland physical well-being. Let’s make it a healthy year for you and forHadassah. We look forward to your participation and involvement. We are all Hadassah – the power of women who do.

More than 900 Hadassah members, speakers,Associates and supporters convened in

Atlanta this past July for Hadassah’s 98th NationalConvention. During four powerful – and packed –days and nights, delegates probed the breadth and depth of Hadassah’s work in the United Statesand in Israel.

Opening night featured National President EllenHershkin, who captivated the audience with herspeech encouraging us to go "from strength to

strength and from dream to dream . . . for women everywhere.”

The Convention featured an array of speakers – pioneers, innovators, global experts, medical researchers, role modelsand visionaries in the fields of health, medicine and stem cellresearch, women’s empowerment, advocacy of social issues, Israel and Zionism. Among the featured speakers wererenowned cardiologist Dr. Nannette Wenger, celebratedmother-daughter authors Letty and Abigail Pogrebin, IronDome weapons system developer Natan Barak, Oscar-winningactress Gwyneth Paltrow, and the first female Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik.

Gwyneth Paltrow spoke beautifullyabout her Jewish ancestry and whatit means for her to be Jewish. Shewas honored by Hadassah with the first-ever Power of Our Dreamsaward, presented by National President Ellen Hershkin.

Hadassah Convention in Atlantathis July was my sixth convention. Each time I attend Convention, Iexperience something very special, whether it’s becoming a Keeper of the Gate in memory of my late sister, Ruth, or delivering handmadepreemie hats made by members ofmy chapter to Hadassah Hospital–Mt. Scopus at the Centennial Celebration in Israel in 2012.

Convention in Atlanta was extra-special. I was moved at the Plenary“Against All Odds, HMO” when Iheard about HMO’s response to the recent violence in Israel, especiallyin the cases of Liana Alvarez and Karen Lakin, both of whom experienced HMO’s trauma carefirsthand.

I was close to tears when I heardDr. Abed Khalaileh, who treatedthe fatally wounded Richard Lakin, explain how his compassionbrought him to attend the shivaof his late patient.

Not only did attending Conventionmotivate me and renew my enthusiasm for Hadassah, but italso strengthened my bonds to myregion colleagues and friends. Wevisited sights in Atlanta together, enjoyed each other’s company, and took care of one another. I lookforward to attending Conventionnumber seven in two years.

NATIONAL NEWS

Here’s a “taste” of Convention:

Hadassah Northeast members celebrate at National Convention.

Hadassah conventions give me the opportunity to recharge my batteries. The energy in the plenaries is palpable, and the plenaries and breakout sessions never cease to educate me. I was especially delighted at this Convention to see so many young women, a sign that Hadassah is a vibrant and viable organization.

I look forward to meeting more NNE women and encourage you, in my role as National Hadassah Missions Co-Chair, to consider joining a Hadassah Mission, individually, with family or friends, or as a group. It will infinitely enhance your Hadassah experience!

Dorothy Ganz, Past President of the Upper Mid-Atlantic Region

So, where do you start to describefour fun-filled, informative, exciting, eye-opening and pridefuldays? There is nothing like aHadassah Convention and the experience of sitting in a roomful ofinspiring Jewish women who loveIsrael and want to support all thewonderful health care and researchthat the Hadassah Hospitals areknown for throughout the world. Weare “the women who do, advocate, heal and stand up for Israel.”

Hadassah strongly supports gender equity in medical research. You would think that is a nobrainer, but at Convention welearned that gender equity is NOThappening in research. Often research is just on men and testingis only on male mice.

We learned about sex trafficking, a $32 billion industry. Hadassah has made education about sex trafficking a priority. We heardfrom women who were victims ofsex trafficking and how they didn’tchoose this for themselves.

We listened to an author whowrote a book about empoweringgirls. For example, instead of calling a girl bossy, we should callthese women leaders. If you haveself-doubt as a mother, be a model

of self-esteem. Rather than rejecting compliments, learn how to accept them without an explanation but with just a simplethank you.

We were told about the BDS (Boycott, Divest and Sanctions)movement against Israel and how it has has turned into an anti-Semitism campaign. Jewishstudents on campuses where theBDS movement is strong need thetools to explain what Israel is andISN’T to students and even facultyon campus.

Perhaps one of my personal favorites at Convention was theMembership Workshop, where weshared ideas about programmingto get new members. Sharing ideaswith other amazing women wastruly inspirational.

Share the excitement of Hadassah by bringing Hadassah into your community. Get behind an important initiative and advocatefor women’s health and safety. Remember that we are the womenwho do. Dream big and yourdreams will become a reality!

At Convention this summer delegates were informed about anongoing Hadassah program calledCurriculum Watch. The goal of the program is to ensure that textbooks and other teaching material present historically accurate and ethnically and culturally unbiased facts. Chairedby Dr. Sandra Alfonsi, CurriculumWatch takes on the serious business of challenging publishersand educational institutions when

their materials indicate a biasagainst Jews or other minorities, or when the history of the UnitedStates, Israel, or the world is clearlymisstated or “sanitized” in favor of one group over another.

When a textbook contains maps ofthe Middle East but Israel is missing, when history books include WorldWar II but never mention the Holocaust, Curriculum Watch begins the sometimes arduousprocess of dealing with school systems, publishing houses, andcommunities to remedy the situation. Sandra works with a distinguished advisory board of 18 professors, historians and attorneys.

I listened to example after exampleof textbooks providing misleading, inaccurate and biased informationabout Jews and Jewish history andculture. Jewish contributions to theAmerican Revolution, the CivilRights Movement, arts, science andculture are ignored. The ILGWU,

Emma Lazarus, Hayim Solomonand even the role of Judeo-Christianvalues in shaping our nation arebeing removed.

A few days later I visited the MartinLuther King National Park. Therewas NO mention of the Jewish rolein the fight for civil rights in the entire museum. Yet, when I went to the Jewish Museum in Atlanta, there were many references to the Jewish support for civil rights, including a letter from MartinLuther King.

When young people are NOTtaught about the historical linksand support between blacks andJews, and Black Lives Matter decides anti-Israel sentiments deserve a place in their platform, one must surmise a link. Historydoes matter and how we teach itmatters equally as much.

Did you know that Hadassah is a non-governmental organization (NGO) in special consultative status withthe United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)? At Convention, I was fortunate to attend abreakout session led by Hadassah’s U.N. Team, which presents programs to the Commission on the Status of Women and represents Hadassah at the U.N.

The featured speaker, Nelly Shiloh, head of the Human Rights Division at the Permanent Mission of Israel to the United Nations, spoke about how “Hadassah’s values, which embrace change, personal growth, pluralism, and social responsibility, all resonate with the work we do every day at the Human Rights Division of the IsraeliMission.” According to Shiloh, tolerance and mutual understanding are the way to peace, but progress can only be made if there is mutual understanding and discussion between parties for the agreement.

The Q&A following Shiloh’s presentation focused on the role of the U.N. and global anti-Semitism. Many expressed frustration that nations don’t recognize this as a real issue with horrible consequences for all of usand the world. Asked how the U.N. mission from Israel can keep their spirits up in the face of the snubs and deliberate rhetoric that targets Israel, the speaker responded that they remain optimistic and determined.Anger has to take a back seat to showing the good that we do as Hadassah and Israel.

Hadassah’s U.N. policy statement reflects deep concern that the U.N.’s integrity and effectiveness have beencompromised. While recognizing some recent strides toward Israel’s acceptance at the U.N. – such as the recent election of Israel’s Permanent Representative to the U.N., Danny Danon, to chair the Sixth Committee, and the recognition of Yom Kippur as an official U.N. holiday – Hadassah is outraged by the bias against Israelthat continues to pervade the institution. In 2006, Hadassah welcomed an initiative for U.N. reform and in 2014reaffirmed calls for significant reforms that will lead to a more productive U.N., where bias against any state, and against Israel in particular, does not occur.

REGIONAL NEWS

Afew months ago, Hadassah Capital District wassurprised and gratified to receive an extraordinary

bequest of more than $1 million from one of Hadassah’slong-time supporters, Irving Myers. While the amountof the gift was a surprise, the donation did not just fall out of the sky. Mr. Myers was a generous man whogave substantial financial support to the HadassahChapter during his very long life. He lived to 102, thesame age as Hadassah, and the relationship betweenhim and Hadassah Capital District existed over much of it.

Irving Myers was born in Troy, N.Y., to parents whowere strong supporters of the Jewish community and inculcated in him a love of Israel and the Jewishpeople. One of our past region presidents, Rita Cohen, encouraged him to express his feelings through support of Hadassah. With Rita’s cultivation and stewardship, his major support of Hadassah’s workgrew. He was a Founder many times over, and eachFounder’s Certificate was lovingly framed and hung in his living room. Initially, he supported HMO, butafter a visit from Bonnie Lipton, he again became a Founder for the benefit of Hadassah CollegeJerusalem. He was also a major annuitant.

He did not forget Hadassah when he was providingphilanthropy elsewhere. When he made a significantdonation to the local Jewish Federation toward construction of its new building, he instructed that hisrecognition be as the provider of the Hadassah Officein the new Federation home. Visitors to the Federationcan still see the Irving Myers Hadassah Office.

Mr. Myers, who made his living in the local advertisingbusiness, never married and, in fact, he has no livingrelatives. In the last decades of his life, he was confined to his home and wheelchair bound. He livedquietly and enjoyed occasional visits from friends.Hadassah did not forget him, remembering him on birthdaysand with visits.

An initial bequest of $100,000 insupport of HMO was gratefullyreceived by the chapter. Imaginethe surprise when, after thecomplete settlement of the estate, Hadassah received aresiduary bequest of $1,085,000from this generous soul.

Dr. Schonberger’s Presentations toHadassah Northern New EnglandHadassah Northern New England members gathered at two separate

events on September 25th to hear Dr. Rachel Schonberger, NationalChair of Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO), share stories from HMO and

updates on the research at Hadassah that echoes around the world.

Dr. Schonberger said that Hadassah Medical Organization has “written the book” on management of trauma in the Hadassah EinKerem Trauma Center – the first in Israel and still the only level 1trauma center in Jerusalem. Hadassah trauma teams have trainedteams in many countries, and protocols developed there were usedat MGH after the Boston Marathon bombing. In layman’s terms Dr.Schonberger explained the ongoing research in stem cell science fortreatment of macular degeneration, immunotherapy for melanoma

and a number of other diseases, research in genetics and development andtesting of innovative devices to improve healing of fractured bones.

Funding for building and equipping the Sarah Wetsman Davidson HospitalTower is in its final stages and with our continued support it can be completed this year, or by mid-2017. Dr. Schonberger touched our heartswith stories of compassion and healing, such as the story about Russian children who are coming to Israel for life saving bone marrow transplantsthat they cannot get at home.
