Keep Watch with Us
At the September Council meeting our devotions centered on the previ-
ous Sunday’s readings. It was the story from Genesis 12: 1-9 in which God in-
vites Abram and Sarai to “Go” to an unknown future in which God promises to
bless them. After listening to the lesson, we discussed this question:
“Go” the Lord says to Abraham and promises him blessings.
Where do you sense God may be inviting Haven to “go”?
The silence was very loud. No one had an answer. That wasn’t because of a lack
of trying. We have very bright, faith-filled and committed folks on our Council
who are a good representation of the congregation.
I finally suggested if we could not sense where God is calling us, that might be an
answer in itself. Are we so busy doing that we can’t hear God’s calling to us? Or
are we satisfied with the status quo and don’t want to hear God calling us to
something new? Or might we be afraid of what God’s calling may ask of us per-
sonally and so we avoid listening? Or little bit of all these possibilities?
The discussion was good and open. There isn’t anything wrong at Haven — no
fighting, good worship, caring and generous people. Sometimes standing still and
taking a breather is necessary for renewal. Yet.... without directions you’re in
danger of going around in circles until you’re dizzy or your resources are used up.
Isn’t it by far more healthy to consider where God would have us “Go” before
circumstances become unsettling or dire?
This year, as the Narrative Lectionary walks us through the Bible on Sundays, we
will hear a lot about God’s promises:
Promises made.
Promises kept.
Promises threatened.
Promises renewed.
We will hear the good news that we are loved by a God who makes and keeps
promises. We will hear about our Lord who continues to work through God’s
people when promises are threatened. We will learn about God who, in the end,
renews promises through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
At our baptism, God promised to be with us for all eternity. At the Ascension,
Jesus promised those who follow him, “I am with you always.” The presence and
strength of God goes with those who “Go” where God sends them. The presence
and power of God is with the church that ventures down pathways of ministry and
mission to which calls it to “GO.” It is by far not always easy or painless to “Go”
where God leads. But you will notice considerable energy and excitement
unleashed whenever disciples step out in faith to follow our Lord into God’s sav-
ing and healing efforts.
On behalf of your Congregational Council I ask you to keep watch with us. That’s
a sincere request for you to actively, prayerfully join us in seeking God’s will for
Haven. What would God have us do or be to further bless our neighbors? Where
do you sense God inviting Haven to “Go”? Share that conversation with others.
Share your insights with Council members. Keep watch, pray and have no fear.
God equips and provides for those God sends.
Your pastor and partner in ministry,
Linda M Alessandri

P.S. ON A PERSONAL NOTE On October 13th I will leave on an adventure to Scotland with my seminary
friend, Ann. No camels this time, but lovely countryside and coastlines, interesting history and people and the
surprising things you learn about yourself when you are the foreigner in another’s nation. I will return October
27. As always, I ask for your prayers that my time away is refreshing, my driving on the “wrong” side of the
Scotland roads is safe and that I come home renewed for our ministry together. I will carry you in heart and
prayer.
While I’m away, please contact the following pastors in the event of an emergency or circumstance in which
you would appreciate a pastor’s presence and prayer:
October 13 - 19 Pastor Dave Kaplan 301-797-3045
October 20 - 27 Pastor Mike Louia (St. Paul Funkstown) (w) 301-791-1738 (h) 240-469-4798

HELPING THE RESIDENTS OF HOLLY PLACE – For the month of October we will be collecting
trash bags (13gal & 33gal.), T-shirt bags or small waste basket bags for the residents of Holly Place. There
is a container in the narthex for you to place your items.
FALL CLOTHING DRIVE—The AMEN team will sponsor a collection of used clothing
that is suitable for the coming cold weather. While any clothing is welcome, there is a par-
ticular need for children’s clothing including sweaters and jackets. The children’s clothing
will be donated to either Fountaindale School or to the Children in Need program. Other
clothing will go to W-house, REACH and Goodwill and should be seasonally appropriate.
Please place your donations in bags and deposit them in the coat closet closest to PA Ave.
The last day of the collection will be November 2, 2014.

Pet Blessing Sunday, October 5th 3:00 - 4:00 PM - Each day our pets bless us with
unconditional love and joy. Every year on a Sunday close to October 4th, the feast of
St. Francis of Assisi, many people of faith around the world host events where animals
are blessed.
Why a pet blessing? It’s an opportunity to celebrate God’s compassion and concern
for all creatures...It’s an occasion to meet neighbors and enjoy easy conversation about
a common interest – pets we love.
A tent will be set up on the church lawn so it can be seen from Pennsylvania Ave-
nue. We’ll ask folks to sign the register on behalf of their pet. Each pet will be indi-
vidually blessed. There will be treats and water bowls for the animals. Even a door
prize!
Any pet that is safe to bring is welcome. Please get the word around and invite friends and neighbors to
bring their pets along. Any questions, please call Pastor Linda Alessandri at the Church office.
*St. Francis of Assisi lived a life of simplicity, charity and humility in the 13th century. He is remembered as a champion
of justice and lover of animals. Washington County Coalition of Lutheran Churches
KEEP SAVING THOSE BOX TOPS! - The box tops are used to provided Fountaindale Ele-
mentary School with school equipment and supplies it may not have been able to afford otherwise.
You will find the Box Tops for Education slips on a wide variety of products. Clip them and put them in the
designated container in the church narthex. Let’s try for $100 worth of Box Tops for Education this School
Year!

MEMORIALS TEAM
SUGGESTIONS??? —We need to identify the room at the furtherest end
of our church in the west wing (previously the old choir room). This is a large
sunny room being refurbished for meetings, small family gatherings and a
learning center. It's an ideal peaceful room where one can find solitude or just meet and talk. But Mary needs
to know a name for the room to reserve it for you. So please place your suggestion in the box on the table in
the narthex, call, or email the church office. The names will be presented to the council October 6. Enter as
many times as you wish.

CHURCH PICNIC A HUGH SUCCESS—Haven's picnic, held at the Hagerstown Regional Park
near Black Rock on Sunday, September 14, was well attended and enjoyed by everyone who was
there. We were blessed with beautiful weather, a meaningful worship service in a lovely natural
setting, a delicious meal, fun games, and fellowship with one another.
Many thanks to the Parish Life & Parish Education teams for planning this event, to everyone
who brought food, the members of Parish Life for organizing the food, to the worship team, everyone who par-
ticipated in the service, to Pastor Alessandri, Marge Cunningham, and Carol Shull for directing the games.
Also thanks to everyone who pitched in and helped in any way.
We are hopeful that this will be just the first of many annual picnics to welcome everyone back from summer
activities and begin a new year together as Christ's disciples.

THE NARRATIVE LECTIONARY ADVENTURE CONTINUES Each Sunday during the WORD portion of worship, we’ll focus on a single story from the Bible. In each Sun-
day’s bulletin, you will find flyers with suggestions on how to further dwell in the riches of God’s word in
short, daily devotions. This month we will move with God’s people from God’s Covenant and Command-
ments at Sinai into the Promised Land and into the reigns of Kings David and Solomon.
October 5 Covenant and Commandments Exodus 19: 3-7,20: 1-17
October 12 Joshua Renews the Covenant Joshua 24: 1-15
October 19 David and Bathsheba 2 Samuel 12: 1-9, Psalm 51: 1-9
October 26 Solomon’s Wisdom 1 Kings 3: 4-28
