1st part : READING COMPREHENSION (50% of total written mark)

TEXT 1 : Harriet Tubman HARRIET TUBMAN was born a slave. In the 1800s, slaves were African-American people who were forced to work. They were “owned” by their masters and had no rights. They could be bought and sold, and ripped away from their families forever. Harriet Tubman wanted a better life. She ran away from her “owners” on what came to be known as the Underground Railway. The Underground Railway was not really underground and it was not really a railroad. It was a series of long paths through the woods that led to freedom for slaves in the Northern United States. It was very dangerous, and very long, but Harriet Tubman made it to freedom! After Harriet became free, she helped her family members and other slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad. Southern slave owners were very angry with Harriet, and offered large rewards for anyone who could capture her. Harriet, however, was never captured. In all, she helped over 300 slaves to freedom in the North. Former slaves called her “Moses”. That is one reason why Harriet will be known forever as the Conductor of the Underground Railroad.

TEXT 2: Free-diving As a child, Tanya Streeter always loved swimming in the sea – she grew up in the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. She could always dive the deepest for seashells. But she didn’t know then that she could dive deeper than anyone else in the world. Tanya discovered her diving abilities in the 1997, when she joined a class in free-diving. Free-diving is a new sport. It’s very dangerous, because you dive with no oxygen. There were only men in the class and no-one wanted to dive with her because she was a girl. But her class was surprised when they saw how long she could swim underwater. Her teachers immediately wanted to train her. A few months later, Tanya started breaking records. She could swim underwater for nearly six minutes with just one breath! Last year she broke the world free-diving record. She dived 121 metres with one breath. She says: “At the bottom of the sea I’m calm. I love the peace and quiet down there. Coming up again is very difficult. You can’t think about the pain! I’m not planning to break any more records for a while. I’m going to wait and see if anyone breaks my last record! In the future I’m going to teach free-diving and work for sea-life conservation.”

TEXT 5 : San Francisco Every year, about sixteen million visitors come to San Francisco on the west coast of the United States. Most people arrive in this wonderful city in California by car, bus, or plane. But some take the train and go across the (1) on the famous railroad.

You can get on a train in New York on the east (2) and travel to the city of Chicago. From there, you can make one of the world’s most exciting train (3) – from the window, you can see fast rivers, red mountains, big green trees, and many (4) animals.

Many visitors are interested in the famous places there – they want to walk (5) the wonderful Golden Gate Bridge, sit in the beautiful Golden Gate Park or visit the island prison of Alcatraz.

There are about seventy hills in San Francisco, so it is a very good place for photographers. You can (6) on a hill and take wonderful pictures of San Francisco with the blue water behind it. But you need to be very quick with a camera because the weather often changes here. One minute you can see big blue (7), and the next minute there is only the famous white fog – this moves (8) across the city from the sea.

There are often earthquakes in the San Francisco area but these are normally very little and people cannot usually feel them. The (9) houses and offices in the city are carefully built: when the earth moves, they can move too. For example, the Transamerica Pyramid, the (10) building in San Francisco, moved 30 centimetres from side to side in the 1989 earthquake but it stayed up!

When people talk about San Francisco, they often think of the long orange-red bridge to the city – the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge. It cost more than 35 million dollars and hundreds of (12) built it over four years. When it opened in April 1937, it was the longest bridge of its type in the world.

Eine legendäre Schule aus Deutsch perfekt, März 2016, von Katja Hanke

Seit 1951 gibt es die Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin. Sie war die wichtigste Ballettschule der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik. Fünf Jahre jünger ist die Staatliche Schule für Artistik1. Seit 1991 sind beide zusammen eine Schule, die aber zwei Teile hat: Bühnentanz2 und Artistik.

Die jüngsten Kinder sind zehn, wenn sie an der Schule beginnen. Jedes Jahr müssen sie zeigen, dass sie genug gelernt haben. Viele dürfen die Schule danach nicht mehr besuchen – manchmal 50 Prozent. Die anderen schließen die Schule nach neun Jahren ab. Zuerst besuchen 300 Kinder und Jugendliche die Schule: 200 die Ballett- und 100 die Artistenschule. 70 von ihnen wohnen im Internat, das Teil der Schule ist. Sie kommen aus ganz Deutschland, aber auch aus vielen anderen Ländern: zum Beispiel aus Japan, Brasilien und Italien. Die Ausbildung ist für alle kostenlos.

Schulunterricht und Training finden abwechselnd3 statt: zuerst zwei Stunden Schulunterricht, dann zwei Stunden Training, dann wieder Schulunterricht. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler können einen mittleren Schulabschluss oder das Abitur4 machen. Dazu machen sie einen Berufsabschluss in Artistik oder Bühnentanz an der Berufsfachschule 5 , der Teil der Ballettschule ist. Auch kooperiert die Schule mit der legendären Hochschule 6 für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch. Eine Chance auf dem Arbeitsmarkt im Sektor Ballett haben die Absolventen7 nur, wenn sie sehr gut sind. Das sind aber die meisten: 93 Prozent von ihnen finden danach einen Job, viele beim klassischen Ballett.

Vor meinem Umzug nach Deutschland hatte ich ganz schön Angst. Ich konnte nämlich fast gar kein Deutsch. Aber ich wollte unbedingt umziehen. In Deutschland wurde mir nämlich eine Stelle als Zeppelinpilotin8 angeboten.

Seit meinem 19. Geburtstag weiß ich: Ich will fliegen. Also habe ich einen Flugschein gemacht. Zuerst bin ich Flugzeug geflogen, später auch Zeppelin - wie jetzt hier am 5 Bodensee.

Meine Kollegen sprechen alle sehr gut Englisch. Trotzdem helfen sie mir, Deutsch zu lernen. Die Sprache brauche ich nämlich beruflich. Zum Beispiel, wenn ich im Zeppelin Durchsagen mache. Am Anfang hat mich das sehr nervös gemacht. Jetzt ist es normal für mich.

Am meisten überrascht hat mich in Deutschland, wie direkt die Menschen sind. Ein Beispiel: 10 "Lass uns bald mal einen Kaffee trinken gehen." In England ist das eine wenig konkrete Idee für die Zukunft. Ein Deutscher sagt das? Dann kann man schon einmal ein schönes Cafe suchen.

Genauso ist es auch bei anderen Angeboten. Mir haben zum Beispiel viele Menschen Hilfe angeboten. Für den Anruf bei der Bank genauso wie für den Besuch im Rathaus - da ist es 15 nicht beim Angebot geblieben. Das gefällt mir.

Sehr überrascht war ich auch bei meinem ersten Besuch am Strand von Kressbronn. Der Ort liegt ja direkt am Bodensee. Meine Freunde sind einfach zum Wasser gelaufen. Ihre Handys, Geldbörsen und Taschen haben sie auf dem Handtuch liegen lassen. "Seid ihr verrückt?", habe ich sie gefragt. Aber sie hatten keine Angst - und die Sachen waren am Ende wirklich 20 noch alle da.

Die Deutschen sind nicht nur am Strand ehrlich. Mein Freund hat nach einem Besuch im Restaurant gemerkt, dass seine Geldbörse fehlt. Er wollte sofort seine Kreditkarten sperren. Ich habe erst einmal in dem Restaurant angerufen. Sie hatten die Börse, in der viel Geld war. Weil sie dachten, dass wir Touristen sind, haben sie alle Hotels im Ort angerufen. 25

Zum ersten Mal seit 1998 fühle ich mich jetzt an einem Ort zu Hause. Nicht nur, weil die Bodenseeregion so schön ist. Sondern auch, weil ich jetzt längere Zeit an einem Ort lebe. In den letzten Jahren habe ich sehr viel im Hotel gelebt. Aus Deutschland möchte ich nie wieder wegziehen.

Les modifications corporelles ne sont plus, comme autrefois le tatouage, une manière

populaire d'affirmer une singularité radicale. Elles touchent en profondeur les jeunes

générations dans leur ensemble, toutes conditions sociales confondues. Elles sollicitent

autant les hommes et les femmes. Loin d'être un effet de mode, elles changent l'ambiance

sociale, incarnent de nouvelles formes de séduction, elles s'érigent en phénomène culturel. 5

Si le tatouage ou le piercing pouvaient encore être associés à une dissidence sociale dans

les années 70 ou 80, ce n'est plus le cas aujourd'hui.

Le stéréotype du tatoué comme homme, jeune, costaud, issu de milieu populaire (ouvrier,

marin, routier, militaire, truand, etc.), affichant une virilité excessive, s'est estompé lors de

ces dix dernières années. En une durée également brève, le piercing s'est également imposé 10

comme un accessoire esthétique autant pour les hommes que pour les femmes. D'autres

formes de modifications corporelles apparaissent comme le fait de brûler, de scarifier, de

couper la peau pour y inscrire des figures insolites. Ou encore d'insérer dans la chair des

implants pour en modifier l'apparence. Ces dernières pratiques en sont à leur début, elles

participent du renouvellement de la parure corporelle, mais elles suscitent des vocations 15

croissantes. D'autres vont émerger dans les années à venir.

Il m'a paru nécessaire de retracer brièvement l'histoire occidentale du tatouage, du moins

depuis sa redécouverte par l'expédition de Cook1 dans les mers du Sud (le piercing étant lui,

d'après Denis Bruma2, d'une apparition récente, même s'il était connu comme une forme de

parure "exotique" depuis au moins aussi longtemps que le tatouage), essentiellement pour 20

expliquer les préjugés qui ont longtemps eu cours à son sujet. Pendant plus d'un siècle le

tatouage est synonyme de marginalité, de dissidence, de délinquance, et son histoire en

effet surtout liée aux interstices de la société. Cette réputation sulfureuse alimente les

fréquentes oppositions parentales à l'encontre de la volonté de leurs enfants de se tatouer ou

de se piercer. Cet écart de générations montre combien les aînés restent influencés par les 25

anciennes images négatives associées aux modifications corporelles, alors que pour les

jeunes elles sont à l'inverse une manière de s'intégrer à leur classe d'âge, d'embellir leur

corps bien plutôt que de le stigmatiser.

Le tatouage est désormais une manière d'écrire dans la chair des moments clés de

l'existence. Le corps se fait simultanément archive de soi et décoration. accueille les traces d'une relation amoureuse, d'un anniversaire (les vingt ans, les vingt-cinq

ans, les trente ans, etc.), la naissance d'un enfant, la réussite d'un projet, etc. Le signe est

mémoire d'un événement, du franchissement personnel d'un passage dans l'existence dont

l'individu ne veut pas perdre le souvenir. Sous une forme ostentatoire ou discrète, il participe

d'une esthétique de la vie quotidienne, sollicitant un jeu avec le secret selon son 35

emplacement et le degré de familiarité avec l'autre. Souvent en effet sa signification reste

énigmatique, et le lieu plus ou moins accessible au regard dans la vie courante. Parfois

accroissement de la jouissance d'exister et démonstration d'un style de présence. Le

tatouage ou le bijou du piercing sont un mode d'affiliation à une communauté nourrissant une

complicité relative avec ceux qui les portent également. Mais nous le verrons, la "tribu" est 40

largement un mythe, une référence combattue même par beaucoup. Le bricolage des signes

identitaires amène certains à vivre une expérience décrite comme "spirituelle", détachée de

toute référence religieuse mais puissante dans ses conséquences personnelles. Ils se

sentent métamorphosés en sortant de la boutique ou après avoir les signes eux-mêmes sur

leur corps. Ils vivent à leur manière un rite personnel de passage. En changeant la forme de 45

leur corps, ils entendent changer leur existence, et parfois y réussissent en effet car leur

regard sur eux-mêmes s'est radicalement modifié.

D'autant que la marque corporelle est souvent une prise d'autonomie, une manière

symbolique de prendre possession de soi. Le corps légué par les parents est à modifier. Le

jeune entend affirmer sa différence et être reconnu malgré tout. Il souhaite faire peau neuve. 50

Et nombre de jeunes disent leur crainte de la réaction de leurs parents. Ils attendent avec

anxiété un jugement à leur propos dont ils pressentent la négativité. Les marques corporelles

impliquent également une volonté d'attirer le regard, même si le jeu demeure possible selon

les lieux d'inscription, qu'elles soient en permanence sous le regard des autres ou seulement

de ceux dont on recherche la complicité. Elles demeurent sous l'initiative de l'individu et 55

incarnent alors un espace de sacralité dans la représentation de soi. A défaut d'exercer un

contrôle sur son existence, le corps est un objet à portée de main sur lequel la volonté

personnelle est presque sans entraves. La profondeur de la peau est hospitalière à toutes

les significations. La marque cutanée traduit la nécessité de compléter, par une initiative

propre, un corps insuffisant en lui-même à incarner un sentiment d'existence propice. 60
