LES MISÉRABLES (12A tbc) Tom Hooper | 2012 | UK | 170’ tbc

The show of shows, Les Misérables is now reborn as the cinematic musical experience of a lifetime in this sweeping and spectacular interpretation of Victor Hugo’s epic tale, directed by Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech). Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Hugh Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Anne Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever. With international superstars and classic songs—including I Dreamed a Dream, Bring Him Home, One Day More and On My Own.

QUARTET (12A) Dustin Hoffman | 2012 | UK | 98’

A wonderful all-star cast (including Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins, Tom Courtenay, and Michael Gambon) graces this new comedy drama, Dustin Hoffman‘s directorial debut, which is sure to please fans of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Lifelong friends Wilf and Reggie, together with former colleague Cissy, are residents of Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Every year on Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. But when Jean Horton, a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times (who is also Reggie’s ex-wife and the fourth and most celebrated member of their former quartet), unexpectedly moves into the home, the plans for this year’s concert start to unravel. As old grudges threaten to undermine past glories and theatrical temperaments play havoc with the rehearsal schedule, it becomes apparent that having four of the finest singers in English operatic history under one roof offers no guarantee that the show will go on. Playing at Mwldan from the date of national release.

Mae’r ffrindiau hyd oes Wilf a Reggie, ynghyd â’u cyd-weithiwr Cissy, yn breswylwyr yn Beecham House, cartref i gyn-gantorion opera. Pob blwyddyn ar ben-blwydd Giuseppe Verdi, mae’r preswylwyr yn casglu i roi cyngerdd i godi arian i’r cartref. Ond pan mae Jean Horton, cyn grande dame opera sydd yn dioddef caledi (ac sydd hefyd yn gyn-wraig i Reggie a’r pedwerydd aelod a’r aelod mwyaf enwog eu cyn pedwarawd), yn annisgwyl yn symud i’r cartref, mae cynlluniau ar gyfer cyngerdd eleni yn dechrau datod. Yn dangos yn y Mwldan o’r dyddiad rhyddhau cenedlaethol.

THE SAPPHIRES (PG) Wayne Blair | 2012 | Australia | 103’

This is a gem! Warmly engaging and shamelessly crowd-pleasing, The Sapphires is based on a remarkable true story. It’s 1968 and a trio of young, talented Australian Aboriginal girls are belting out country and western to a stony response at a rural Australian talent show. Boozy Irish MC Dave (a fabulous performance by Chris O’Dowd) can see these girls have got genuine promise, but this is the outback and there’s no way white Australia is ready to give them a second glance. Dave masterminds their transformation into authentic sould sisters and secures a first gig, entertaining US troops in Vietnam. Beneath a spangly, feelgood exterior, The Sapphires has a lot to say say about Australian identity and the bitter legacy of institutionalised racism – and it strikes gold with astute song selections from the Motown, Stax and Atlantic songbooks. Don’t miss this triumphant celebration of youthful emotion, family and music - resistance is futile!

Mae’n 1968, ac mae pedair merch ifanc a thalentog brodorol Awstralia yn dysgu am gariad, cyfeillgarwch a rhyfel. O gwmpas y byd, roedd ‘na brotest a chwyldro, cyffuriau a sioc am lofruddiaeth greulon. Fodd bynnag, mae’r chwiorydd yn cael eu darganfod gan sgowt talent a’u hysbysebu fel ateb Awstralia i ‘The Supremes’, ac mae’n trefnu eu sioe gyntaf drostynt yn difyrru milwyr America yn Fietnam. Wedi seilio ar stori wir, dyma i chi ddathliad gorfoleddus o emosiwn ieuenctid, teulu a cherddoriaeth.

‘Soul music’s redemptive powers are fully at work in this vastly appealing true-life musical comedy’

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD (12A)

Benh Zeitlin | 2012 | USA | 94’

True originals are hard to come by in cinema, but this heart-on-sleeve, dreamy and deeply eccentric tale of life, love and loss in the flood waters of New Orleans truly merits the label. Six-year-old Hushpuppy is a tomboyish girl who lives with her erratic dad in a remote and wild bayou region of Louisiana – a ramshackle, watery trailer community of hard-living waifs and strays. Hushpuppy’s fears of the rising waters and her confused feelings about her parents mean that she – and so we – slips into a world of imagination that involves strange, menacing prehistoric beasts and melting ice caps - a very magical and musical sort of social realism. It’s a fairytale, hailed as a work of genius, deeply affecting, that’s beautiful yet harrowing, simple and sublime, fleshy and mucky, musical and colourful - a crazy, fun, circus-like world that is, full of poetry and pain. The film is, arguably, a masterpiece.

Mae’r gwneuthurwr ffilm newydd Benh Zeitlin wedi addasu drama un act gan ei gyd Americanwr, Lucy Alibar, yn gipolwg breuddwydiol er uniongyrchol ar ymylon America. Gan wynebu iechyd gwywol ei thad tymer wyllt yn ogystal â’r capiau iâ sy’n toddi a gorlifo ei chymuned bayou simsan ac yn gollwng auroch hynafol, rhaid i Hushpuppy sy’n chwe blwydd oed, dysgu ffyrdd gwroldeb ac anwyldeb. Dyma i chi hanes teimladwy, hynod ecsentrig o fywyd, cariad a cholled yn llifogydd New Orleans.

‘..sheer poetry on screen: an explosion of joy in the midst of startling squalor and one of the most visceral, original films to come along in a while.’

LED ZEPPELIN: CELEBRATION DAY (PG)

Dick Carruthers | 2012 | UK | 125’

On December 10, 2007, Led Zeppelin took the stage at London’s O2 Arena to headline a tribute concert for dear friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. What followed was a two-hour-plus tour de force of the band’s signature blues-infused rock ‘n’ roll that instantly became part of the legend of Led Zeppelin. Founding members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were joined by Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, to perform 16 songs from their celebrated catalog including landmark tracks “Whole Lotta Love,” “Rock And Roll,” “Kashmir,” and “Stairway To Heaven.” Although 20 million people applied for tickets, the band’s first headline show in 27 years was seen only by the 18,000 ticket holders who were fortunate enough to have secured seats through the worldwide lottery. Now you can enjoy the experience in this special film of the concert.

Ar 10 Rhagfyr, 2007, aeth Led Zepplin ar y llwyfan yn Arena O2 Llundain i arwain cyngerdd teyrnged i gyfaill annwyl a sefydlwr Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun. Yr hyn a ddilynodd oedd campwaith dwy awr a mwy o roc a rol enwog y band a ddaeth ar unwaith yn rhan o chwedloniaeth Led Zepplin. Yn ymuno â’r aelodau sefydlu John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page a Robert Plant oedd Jason Bonham, mab y diweddar ddrymiwr John Bonham, i berfformio 16 cân o’u catalog enwog gan gynnwys traciau mawr fel “Whole Lotta Love,” “Rock And Roll,” “Kashmir,” a “Stairway To Heaven.”. Er bod ugain miliwn o bobl wedi gwneud cais am docynnau, gwyliwyd sioe gyntaf arweiniol y band ers 27 mlynedd gan 18,000 o bobl bu digon ffodus i sicrhau seddi trwy loteri byd-eang.

‘a celebration of rock ‘n’ roll at its most moving, magical and magnificent’

THE MASTER (15) Paul Thomas Anderson | 2012 | USA | 144’

Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson follows up the critically acclaimed There Will Be Blood with this 1950s-set drama about a charismatic leader of a cult religious movement (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and a young drifter who becomes his protégé (Joaquin Phoenix). Returning psychologically scarred from the Second World War, The Master creates a faith based organisation in an attempt to provide meaning to his life. But his right-hand man begins to question both the belief system and The Master as the organisation grows and gains a fervent following.

Drama a osodir yn y 1950au am arweinydd carismatig symudiad cwlt crefyddol a driffter ifanc sy’n dod yn brotégé iddo. Gan ddychwelyd wedi ei glwyfo’n seicolegol o’r Ail Ryfel Byd, mae The Master yn creu sefydliad sydd yn seiliedig ar ffydd mewn ymgais i roi ystyr i’w fywyd. Ond mae ei brif-gynorthwywr yn dechrau cwestiynu’r system gred a The Master ei hun wrth i’r sefydliad dyfu a chrynhoi dilyniant brwd.

‘...affirms Paul Thomas Anderson’s position as the foremost filmmaking talent of his generation.... Fierce and ferociously funny... a great movie... a new American classic.’

FIVE BROKEN CAMERAS (15) Emad Burnat | Guy Davidi | 2011 | Occupied Palestinian Territory | Israel | France | Netherlands | 94’

When his fourth child was born in 2005, Emad Burnat, a Palestinian farmer in the occupied West bank, got his first camera. At around the same time, the Israelis began building a separation wall in his village – arguably either to stop suicide bombers or to cordon off land to build Israeli houses – which cut off the farmers from the olive groves on which their livelihood depended. People from Emad’s village started a non-violent protest, and Emad became their unofficial cameraman. Five years later, Emad edited his footage into one remarkable film. As one camera after another is shot at or smashed, each one tells a part of a story that cuts through the politics of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict to present an incredibly moving account of life and death. Emad’s co-director is Israeli Guy Davidi. The film also features a fantastic original score by Le Trio Joubran who many will remember from their two amazing concerts at Mwldan in 2006 and 2009.

Pan anwyd ei bedwerydd mab, Gibreel, mae Emad, pentrefwr ym Mhalestina, yn cael ei gamera cyntaf. Yn ei bentref, mae gwahanfur yn cael ei godi ond mae’r pentrefwyr yn gwrthwynebu’r penderfyniad. Mae Emad yn ffilmio’r ymdrech, a arweinir gan ddau o’i gyfeillion gorau, ynghyd a ffilmio Gibreel yn tyfu. Fodd bynnag, mae’n effeithio ei deulu a’i fywyd ei hun; mae ‘na arestiadau’n ddyddiol ac un camera ar ôl y llall yn cael ei ddifetha neu ei saethu, ond mae pob camera yn adrodd rhan o’i stori. Gyda sgôr gwreiddiol llawn emosiwn gan Le Trio Joubran.

FALSE TRAIL (15)

Kjell Sundvall | 2011 | Sweden | 125’

This taut Swedish detective thriller is the latest and one of the very best in the long line of Nordic noirs to be released in the UK, standing comparison with award winning TV series Wallander. It’s been fifteen years since Erik was forced to leave the Norrland Police Department. Since then he has become the National Murder Commission’s best interrogator. When Erik’s boss orders him back to his home town to solve a brutal murder, he hesitantly returns as the thought of going back stirs up unpleasant memories. What at first appears to be a simple murder soon proves to be something much more complicated. This is a tense, chilling and emotionally complex tale of small town violence and corruption, elevated by relentless pacing and big, physical performances.

Y ffilm gyffro ditectif hon o Sweden yw’r diweddaraf ac un o’r gorau yn y gyfres hir o ffilmiau du Nordig i’w rhyddhau ym Mhrydain, gan dynnu cymariaethau gyda’r gyfres deledu lwyddiannus Wallander. Mae’n bymtheg mlynedd ers i Erik orfod gadael Adran Heddlu Norrland. Ers hynny, efe yw holwr gorau’r Comisiwn Llofruddiaeth Genedlaethol. Pan mae bos Erik yn ei orchymyn yn ôl i’w dref enedigol i ddatrys llofruddiaeth ofnadwy, mae’n dychwelyd yn betrusgar gan fod meddwl am fynd yn ôl yn corddi atgofion annymunol. Mae’r hyn sydd ar yr olwg gyntaf yn edrych fel llofruddiaeth syml cyn hir yn troi’n rhywbeth llawer mwy cymhleth. Dyma i chi ffilm iasol, ddirdynnol ac emosiynol cymhleth am drais a llygredd tref fechan, wedi dyrchafu gan gyflymdra di-baid a pherfformiadau, corfforol mawr.

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (15) David O. Russell | 2012 | USA | 121’

This great new romatic comedy is an exhilarating gem, a brilliantly acted feelgood experience that zips along on its off-beat energy and fast-paced wisecracking script. After eight months on a psychiatric ward, former teacher Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper) moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. When he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence, tipped for an Oscar nomination), a mysterious girl with problems of her own, things get complicated. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he’ll do something very important for her in return. As their deal plays out, an unexpected bond begins to form between them, and silver linings appear in both of their lives. Sparky, intelligent, funny and honest!

Ar ôl cyfnod mewn sefydliad meddyliol, mae’r cyn athro Pat Solitano yn symud yn ôl at ei rieni ac yn ceisio ailgymodi gyda’i gyn-wraig. Pan mae’n cyfarfod â Tiffany, merch ddirgel â chanddi broblemau ei hun, mae pethau’n cymhlethu. Mae Tiffany yn cynnig helpu Pat i ailgysylltu â’i wraig, ond ar yr amod ei fod yn gwneud rhywbeth pwysig iawn iddi hi yn dychwelyd. Wrth i’w dêl cael ei gweithredu, mae bond annisgwyl yn dechrau ffurfio rhyngddynt, ac mae nodweddion positif yn dechrau ymddangos ym mywydau’r ddau.

MIDNIGHT’S CHILDREN (12A)

Deepa Mehta | 2012 | Canada | UK | 146’

In his first feature film screenplay, Salman Rushdie adapts his own Booker Prize-winning novel – a riveting allegorical saga that parallels the dramatic upheavals in one family’s history with the events that would define contemporary India, from the end of colonialism to the partitioning of Pakistan. At the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, as India proclaims independence from Great Britain, two newborn babies are switched by a nurse in a Bombay hospital. Saleem Sinai, the illegitimate son of a poor woman and Shiva, the offspring of a wealthy couple, are fated to live the destiny meant for each other. Their lives become mysteriously intertwined and are inextricably linked to India’s whirlwind journey of triumphs and disasters. RUST AND BONE (15) Jacques Audiard | 2012 | France | Belgium | 123’

The latest film from Jacques Audiard (A Prophet) is a moving and poetic love story featuring great performances from Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts. Rust and Bone is about an unlikely relationship taking root under extreme conditions. Ali is an impoverished muscleman seeking a home for himself and his five-year-old son; Stephanie trains killer whales in the local aqua park. Their two lives are dramatically fused together after an accident leaves Stephanie mutilated and forced to reinvent her life. Audiard explores his story with subtlety and emotional complexity, supported by his extraordianary leads; Cotillard is mesmerising in arguably her most challenging role yet, while Schoenaerts impresses mightily.

Mae Ali yn gadael Gogledd Ffrainc i fynd i dy ei chwaer yn Antibes ar ôl dod yn unig warcheidwad Sam, ei fab pum mlwydd oed. Gan weithio fel gwarcheidwad drws, mae’n cael perthynas fer gyda Stephanie (Marion Cotillard), sy’n ymladd yn ei glwb. Dim ond ar ôl i Stephanie, sy’n hyfforddi ac yn perfformio gyda morfilod yn y parc môr lleol, golli ei dwy goes yn y ddamwain gweithle mwyaf ofnadwy, y maent yn cyfarfod eto, pan mae’n ei ffonio’n annisgwyl.

Mae’n bleser gennym gyflwyno casgliad o bedair ffilm fer wedi seilio ar Reilffordd y Cardi Bach, a arferai redeg o Hendy-gwyn i Aberteifi rhwng 1886 - 1963. Roedd y llinell yn enwog am ei natur wledig, golygfeydd deniadol a graddiannau gerwin. I nifer yn yr ardal y llinell oedd ffocws y gymuned leol, gan ddenu llysenw’r Cardi Bach.

Wedi ei chlustnodi ar gyfer ei chau o dan Fwyell Beeching, darfu gweithredu ar y llinell ar 27 Mai 1963, gyda’r trac wedi ei godi’n gyfan gwbl erbyn diwedd 1964. Marciodd y cau newid mewn ffordd gyfan o fyw a diwedd oes.

Caiff ffilm gan Dr George Penn ei chynnwys sy’n dogfennu siwrnai olaf y trên yn 1962, a ffilm sy’n dangos golygfeydd oddi ar y trên, un arall sy’n manylu ar siwrnai teithiwr o Gaerfyrddin i weld ei theulu yn Eglwyswrw, ac un arall sy’n dangos y llinell yn gweithio’n brysur ym 1957.

Emyr Phillips fydd yn adrodd hanes i gyd-fynd â’r dangosiadau. Y mae’n frwdfrydig am reilffyrdd a cheir clasurol, ac yn gyn-brifathro Ysgol Gyfun y Preseli, bu’n ymchwilio ac yn casglu gwybodaeth a recordiadau am y llinell am dros 15 mlynedd. Ymddeolodd Emyr yn 2010 ar ôl 36 mlynedd yn yr alwedigaeth addysgu yn ardal y Preseli, ac mae’n rhoi llawer o’i amser i’w gapel yn Nhy Rhos ac i Bwyllgor Iaith a Threftadaeth Cilgerran.

In aid of Urdd Esiteddfod 2013 :: 27 May – 1 June @ Cilwendeg Farm, Boncath

A collection of short films based on the Cardi Bach Railway, which ran from Whitland to Cardigan. Noted for its rural nature, attractive scenery and severe gradients, the line was the focus of the local community, gaining the nickname the Cardi Bach.

Earmarked for closure under the Beeching Axe, the line ceased operation on the 27th May 1963; the track lifted completely by the end of 1964. The closure marked a change in a whole way of life and the end of an era.

LOVE (AMOUR) (12A) Michael Haneke | 2012 | Austria | France | Germany | 127’

Amour is devastatingly original and unflinching in the way it examines the effect of love on death, and vice versa. Georges and Anne are in their eighties; cultivated, retired music teachers. One day, Anne has an attack and the couple’s bond of love is severely tested. This is a staggering, intensely moving look at old age and life’s end with, at its heart, two performances of incredible skill and wisdom from French veterans Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva. A film about loyalty and being true to your word, Amour is a staggering, highly intelligent and astonishingly performed work. It’s a masterpiece.

Mae ‘Amour’ yn hynod wreiddiol ac yn ddiysgog yn y ffordd y mae’n archwilio effaith cariad ar farwolaeth, ac i’r gwrthwyneb. Mae Georges ac Anne yn eu hwythdegau; yn athrawon cerddoriaeth diwylliedig sydd wedi ymddeol. Un diwrnod, mae Anne yn cael trawiad a chaiff rhwymyn serch y pâr ei roi o dan straen enbyd. Mae hwn yn olwg, hynod drawiadol ar henoed a diwedd oes, gyda dau berfformiad aruthrol sy’n amlygu dawn ryfeddol a doethineb yr actorion profiadol Jean-Louis Trintignant ac Emmanuelle Riva.

SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS (15) Martin McDonagh | 2012 | UK | 110’

After making a splash with his terrific debut, the comedy-noir In Bruges, Martin McDonagh’s follow-up is a funny, irreverent Tarantino-esque film about the inherent crapness of writers. Marty (Colin Farrell) is a struggling drunken Irish writer who dreams of finishing his screenplay, Seven Psychopaths. When his dog-kidnapping buddy (Sam Rockwell) and his partner-in-crime (Christopher Walken) steal a Shih Tzu from a maniac (Woody Harrelson), the plot that has escaped his imagination bursts into life. Marty is going to get all the focus and inspiration he needs, just as long as he lives to tell the tale. A laugh-a-minute, loopy shaggy dog’s tale – insanely good fun!

Mae Marty (Colin Farrell) yn ysgrifennwr meddw Gwyddelig sy’n breuddwydio am orffen ei sgript ffilm “Seven Psychopaths”. Pan mae ei gyfaill sy’n herwgipio cwn (Sam Rockwell) a’i bartner troseddol (Christopher Walken) yn dwyn Shih Tzu o wallgofddyn (Woody Harrelson), mae’r plot sydd wedi dianc o’i feddwl yn troi’n fyw. Bydd Marty yn cael yr holl ffocws ac ysbrydoliaeth sydd angen arno, ond iddo lwyddo i fyw i adrodd yr hanes.

LIVING IN THE FUTURE (12A tbc) Helen Iles | 2012 | Cymru | 48’

Lammas is a co-operative which, in 2009, began the construction of the UK’s first planned ecovillage - Tir y Gafel - on a 76 acre site of mixed pasture and woodland next to the village of Glandwr, Pembrokeshire. This new film tells the the inside story of how the nine families living there have created their own natural homes and gardens, driven by an urgent need to build affordable housing and to renew their relationship with the land. The village combines the traditional smallholding model with the latest innovations in environmental design, green technology and perma-culture, and raises questions about how communities might live more sustainably in the future. The film is set within the context of local planning systems, the pressure for such projects to achieve success, and the new Welsh Government guidelines on low-impact developments.

Mae Lammas yn gydweithfa a ddechreuodd adeiladu pentref eco cynlluniedig gyntaf y DU - Tir y Gafael - yn 2009, ar safle 76 erw o dir pori a choedwig ger pentref Glandwr, Sir Benfro. Mae’r ffilm newydd hon yn adrodd y stori fewnol o sut wnaeth y naw teulu sy’n byw yno greu eu cartrefi a’u gerddi naturiol eu hunain, wedi eu gyrru gan angen taer i adeiladu cartrefi fforddiadwy ac i adnewyddu eu perthynas â’r tir. Mae’r pentref yn cyfuno model y tyddyn bach traddodiadol gyda’r arloesiadau diweddaraf mewn dylunio amgylcheddol, technoleg werdd a phermaddiwylliant, gan godi cwestiynau am sut y gall cymunedau fyw mewn modd mwy cynaliadwy yn y dyfodol. Caiff y ffilm ei gosod o fewn cyd-destun systemau cynl-lunio lleol, y pwysau i brosiectau o’r fath llwyddo, a chanllawiau newydd Llywodraeth Cymru ar ddatblygiadau bach eu heffaith.

The screening will be followed by a question and answer session, chaired by Jane Davidson, who was Minister for Environment and Sustainability in Wales from 2007 to 2011 where she was responsible for the Welsh Government agreeing to make sustainable development its central organis-ing principle.

Yn dilyn y dangosiad bydd ‘na sesiwn cwestiwn ac ateb, a gadeirir gan Jane Davidson, Y Gweinidog dros yr Amgylchedd, Cynaliadwyedd a Thai yng Nghymru o 2007 hyd 2011. Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn, roedd Davidson yn gyfrifol am Lywodraeth Cymru yn cytuno i wneud datblygiad cynaliadwy ei phrif egwyddor drefniadol.
