SECTION 1 SAFETY PrECAuTIONS

1.0 Safety Precautions 1.1 Safety - English

WArNINg: These Safety Precautions areforyourprotection.Theysummarizepre-cautionaryinformationfromthereferenceslistedinAdditionalSafetyInformationsec-

tion.Beforeperforminganyinstallationoroperatingprocedures, be sure to read and follow the safetyprecautionslistedbelowaswellasallothermanuals,materialsafetydatasheets,labels,etc.FailuretoobserveSafetyPrecautionscanresultininjuryordeath.

PrOTECT YOurSELF AND OThErS -- Some welding, cutting, and gouging processes are noisy and require ear protection. The arc, like the sun, emits ultraviolet (uV) and other radiation

and can injure skin and eyes. hot metal can cause burns. Training in the proper use of the processes and equipment is essential to prevent accidents. Therefore:

1. Alwayswearsafetyglasseswithsideshieldsinanyworkarea,evenifweldinghelmets,faceshields,andgogglesarealsorequired.

2. Usea faceshieldfittedwiththecorrectfilterandcoverplates toprotectyoureyes, face,neck,andearsfromsparksandraysofthearcwhenoperat-ingorobservingoperations.Warnbystandersnottowatchthearcandnottoexposethemselvestotheraysoftheelectric-arcorhotmetal.

3. Wearflameproofgauntlettypegloves,heavylong-sleeve shirt, cuffless trousers, high-topped shoes,andaweldinghelmetorcapforhairprotection,toprotectagainstarcraysandhotsparksorhotmetal.Aflameproofapronmayalsobedesirableasprotec-tionagainstradiatedheatandsparks.

4. Hotsparksormetalcanlodgeinrolledupsleeves,trousercuffs,orpockets.Sleevesandcollarsshouldbekeptbuttoned,andopenpocketseliminatedfromthefrontofclothing.

5. Protect other personnel from arc rays and hotsparkswithasuitablenon-flammablepartitionorcurtains.

6. Usegogglesoversafetyglasseswhenchippingslagorgrinding.Chippedslagmaybehotandcanflyfar.Bystanders should also wear goggles over safetyglasses.

FIrES AND ExPLOSIONS --heat from flames and arcs can start fires. hot slag or sparks can also cause fires and explosions. Therefore:

1. Removeallcombustiblematerialswellawayfromtheworkareaorcoverthematerialswithaprotec-tivenon-flammablecovering.Combustiblematerialsincludewood,cloth,sawdust,liquidandgasfuels,solvents,paintsandcoatings,paper,etc.

2. Hotsparksorhotmetalcanfallthroughcracksorcrevicesinfloorsorwallopeningsandcauseahid-densmolderingfireorfiresonthefloorbelow.Makecertainthatsuchopeningsareprotectedfromhotsparksandmetal.“

3. Donotweld,cutorperformotherhotworkuntiltheworkpiecehasbeencompletelycleanedsothattherearenosubstancesontheworkpiecewhichmightproduceflammableortoxicvapors.Donotdohotworkonclosedcontainers.Theymayexplode.

4. Havefireextinguishingequipmenthandyforinstantuse,suchasagardenhose,waterpail,sandbucket,orportablefireextinguisher.Besureyouaretrainedinitsuse.

5. Donotuseequipmentbeyonditsratings.Forex-ample,overloadedweldingcablecanoverheatandcreateafirehazard.

6. Aftercompletingoperations,inspecttheworkareatomakecertaintherearenohotsparksorhotmetalwhichcouldcausealaterfire.Usefirewatcherswhennecessary.

1. Besurethepowersourceframe(chassis)iscon-nectedtothegroundsystemoftheinputpower.

2. Connect the workpiece to a good electricalground.

3. Connecttheworkcabletotheworkpiece.Apoorormissingconnectioncanexposeyouorotherstoafatalshock.

4. Usewell-maintainedequipment.Replacewornordamagedcables.

5. Keep everything dry, including clothing, work

area, cables, torch/electrode holder, and powersource.

6. Makesurethatallpartsofyourbodyareinsulatedfromworkandfromground.

7. Donotstanddirectlyonmetalortheearthwhileworking intightquartersoradamparea;standondryboardsoraninsulatingplatformandwearrubber-soledshoes.

8. Putondry,hole-freeglovesbeforeturningonthepower.

9. Turnoffthepowerbeforeremovingyourgloves.

10.Refer to ANSI/ASC Standard Z49.1 (listed onnextpage)forspecificgroundingrecommenda-tions.Donotmistaketheworkleadforagroundcable.

ELECTrIC AND MAgNETIC FIELDS — May be dangerous. Electric cur-rent flowing through any conduc-tor causes localized Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF). Welding and

cutting current creates EMF around welding cables and welding machines. Therefore:

1. Weldershavingpacemakersshouldconsult theirphysicianbeforewelding.EMFmayinterferewithsomepacemakers.

2. ExposuretoEMFmayhaveotherhealtheffectswhichareunknown.

3. Welders should use the following procedures tominimizeexposuretoEMF:

A.Routetheelectrodeandworkcablestogether.Securethemwithtapewhenpossible.

B. Nevercoilthetorchorworkcablearoundyourbody.

C.Donotplaceyourbodybetweenthetorchandworkcables.Routecablesonthesamesideofyourbody.

D.Connecttheworkcabletotheworkpieceascloseaspossibletotheareabeingwelded.

E. Keep welding power source and cables as farawayfromyourbodyaspossible.

FuMES AND gASES -- Fumes and gases, can cause discomfort or harm, particularly in confined spaces. Do not breathe fumes and gases. Shield-ing gases can cause asphyxiation.

Therefore:

1. Alwaysprovideadequateventilationintheworkareabynaturalormechanicalmeans.Donotweld,cut,orgougeonmaterialssuchasgalvanizedsteel,stain-lesssteel,copper,zinc,lead,beryllium,orcadmiumunlesspositivemechanicalventilationisprovided.Donotbreathefumesfromthesematerials.

2. Donotoperateneardegreasingandsprayingopera-tions.Theheatorarcrayscanreactwithchlorinatedhydrocarbon vapors to form phosgene, a highlytoxicgas,andotherirritantgases.

3. Ifyoudevelopmomentaryeye,nose,orthroatir-ritationwhileoperating, this isan indicationthatventilation is not adequate. Stop work and takenecessarystepstoimproveventilationintheworkarea.Donotcontinuetooperateifphysicaldiscom-fortpersists.

4. RefertoANSI/ASCStandardZ49.1(seelistingbelow)forspecificventilationrecommendations.

5. WArNINg: This product, when used for welding or cutting, produces fumes or gases which contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause birth defects and, in some cases, cancer. (California health & Safety Code §25249.5 et seq.)

CYLINDEr hANDLINg -- Cylinders, if mishandled, can rupture and vio-lently release gas. Sudden rupture of cylinder, valve, or relief device can injure or kill. Therefore:

1. Use the proper gas for the process and use theproper pressure reducing regulator designed tooperatefromthecompressedgascylinder.Donotuseadaptors.Maintainhosesandfittingsingoodcondition.Followmanufacturer'soperatinginstruc-tionsformountingregulatortoacompressedgascylinder.

2. Alwayssecurecylinders inanuprightpositionbychain or strap to suitable hand trucks, undercar-riages,benches,walls,post,orracks.Neversecurecylinderstoworktablesorfixtureswheretheymaybecomepartofanelectricalcircuit.

3. Whennotinuse,keepcylindervalvesclosed.Havevalveprotectioncapinplaceifregulatorisnotcon-nected.Secureandmovecylindersbyusingsuitablehandtrucks.Avoidroughhandlingofcylinders.

4. Locatecylindersawayfromheat,sparks,andflames.Neverstrikeanarconacylinder.

5. Foradditionalinformation,refertoCGAStandardP-1,"PrecautionsforSafeHandlingofCompressedGasesinCylinders",whichisavailablefromCompressedGas Association, 1235 Jefferson Davis Highway,Arlington,VA22202.

EQuIPMENT MAINTENANCE -- Faulty or improperly maintained equipment can cause injury or death. Therefore:

1. Alwayshavequalifiedpersonnelperformtheinstal-lation, troubleshooting, and maintenance work.Donotperformanyelectricalworkunlessyouarequalifiedtoperformsuchwork.

2. Beforeperforminganymaintenanceworkinsideapowersource,disconnectthepowersourcefromtheincomingelectricalpower.

3. Maintaincables,groundingwire,connections,powercord,andpowersupplyinsafeworkingorder.Donotoperateanyequipmentinfaultycondition.

4. Donotabuseanyequipmentoraccessories.Keepequipmentawayfromheatsourcessuchasfurnaces,wetconditionssuchaswaterpuddles,oilorgrease,corrosiveatmospheresandinclementweather.

5. Keepallsafetydevicesandcabinetcoversinpositionandingoodrepair.

6. Useequipmentonlyfor its intendedpurpose.Donotmodifyitinanymanner.
