Can you believe it has been one year since the Gulf Coast Buzz pub-lished its first issue?

We have learned (and changed) several items since our first issue and we continue to improve.

The next two weeks, through May 1, are crammed with events, large and small, and near and far. Two events take place April 18 on the Eastern Shore. Earth Day Mobile Bay will take place in Fairhope around the pier. It will be full of booths, arts and crafts and exhibits that teach us how to take care of our Gulf waters and celebrate the life it holds. That evening, head to Weeks Bay for Bald Eagle Bash. Enjoy deli-cious menu items and live music while raiseing money for the Weeks Bay Foundation. This is a family friendly event for anyone who loves good music and good food.

The weekend beginning April 24 is home to three events - in Stockton, Orange Beach and Spanish Fort. Bama Coast Cruise will ride into town April 24 to 26. View vintage and new cars while enjoying the shops and restaurants of The Wharf. Enjoy the tunes of the Chestangs, the Unknown Bluegrass Band and Ashleigh White at Stockton’s Old Time Country Festival at Bicentennial Park on April 25. In addition to the live music, there will be plowing and blacksmith demonstrations, pony and train rides, Kona Ice, antique cars and tractors, square dancers and much more.

April 23 through 25, 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center in Spanish Fort will be home to the Delta Woods and Water Expo. This event celebrates the beauty of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta with presenters, live exhibits and programs.

We end this two weeks with the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival. Many will come from near and far May 1 and 2 to get a glimpse as these colorful balloons take the sky. Provid-ing weather conditions are appropriate, tethered rides will be available Friday and Saturday evenings, along with the balloon glow event. Throughout the day, live entertainment, such as Sugarcane Jane, will take the stage while you browse the arts and crafts vendor booths and view the antique tractor collections.

Be sure to check out our usual book, food, wine, family fun and outdoors columns.Thank you for our first year. Here’s to many, many more!

Splashes of color will fill the sky May 1 and 2 as the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival takes flight. The 11th annual festival is sponsored by

Tanger Outlets, which is also home to the kickoff party and balloon glow event on Thursday, April 30, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Visitors can view 10 balloons up close, includ-ing Let’s Get High, piloted by Ellis Calvert and Touchstone Energy, piloted by 2001 Guinness World Record Holder Cheri White.

Festival hours are 2 – 10 p.m. on Friday, May 1, and 6 a.m. – 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 at the Foley Sports Park on Highway 98 West. Many of the same activities will be available for children and adults alike. Tethered hot air balloon rides are available both Friday and Satur-

day nights, if the weather is favorable. A limited number of tickets will be sold for the tethered rides, and can be purchased online. The World Famous Disc Connected K-9 Frisbee Dog Show is always a crowd favorite and will be back for another weekend of dog tricks and treats. Mitchell Brothers and Sons carnival is a new surprise for visitors this year. The carnival will be open 2 – 10 p.m. and wristbands are $25 for unlimited fun. Wristbands can be purchased at Tanger Outlet Shopping Services Office, Bryant Bank, South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce or online.

Live entertainment includes Sugarcane Jane, Chee Weez, JERI, Rhythm Intervention and Escalade. While listening to live music, browse the arts and crafts booths, vendor booths, enjoy a crawfish boil and much more.

Attendance at past festivals has been around 65,000, and organizers are expecting the crowd to grow this year.

Great food and great music for a great causethis year’s Bald Eagle Bash is

April 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Tonsmeire Resource Center on

Weeks Bay under the U.S. 98 bridge over Fish River.

Organizers have dubbed this an-nual event a “Party for Preservation” because it benefits the Weeks Bay Foundation.

Every year, organizers provide fresh Gulf seafood to restaurants and chefs in the area, who then create a menu with delicious items like shrimp ceviche, shrimp stuffed mashed po-tatoes, shrimp and grits, gumbo and much more.

There’s also live music from Gretch Lyles and the Modern Eldorados, who play a fun rockabilly/country/pop blend of music with a mix of classics like Elvis, Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline.

This is event is always family friendly and is great for anyone who loves good food and good music, all

for a great cause. Tickets for the Bald Eagle Bash are

$40 in advance and $45 at the gate the day of the event. Children under 10 are free. Free parking is available at the Weeks Bay Reserve Safe Harbor site with BRATS shuttles providing transportation to and from the event.

Tickets can be purchased at Page and Palette bookstore in downtown Fairhope, Weeks Bay Foundation office, Weeks Bay Reserve and from foundation board members.

Mobile Bay’s annual celebration of environmental stewardship of the state’s Gulf coast and bay wa-ters is back at the Fairhope Pier Park on April 18.

The 2015 edition of Earth Day Mobile Bay kicks off at 10 a.m. April 18 with exhibits, arts and crafts, music, hands-on experiences and more. The event is free.

The event will feature vendors of earth-friendly solu-tions like windmills, efficient heating and cooling systems like solar, geothermal, insulation, green building as well as local and natural healthy food sources. Some exhibits will also feature hybrid and electric cars.

There will be live music throughout the day starting at 10 a.m. with the Center Stage Performance Children’s Choir. At 11:30 a.m. Sassafrass, featuring Jo Billips and Karen Harville, will perform. If you are like me, then spring means three things to you: pollen allergies, Cadbury eggs and BASEBALL. Baseball is America’s greatest pas-

time, and you and your family have plenty of chances to see the greatest game in person in the next few weeks.

The Mobile BayBears kick off their home schedule with a weekend series against the Biloxi Shuckers, formerly known as the Huntsville Stars. The Friday, April 17 game is the first Friday Night Fireworks game of the year. The BayBears have an excellent fireworks display after every Friday night home game.

The following weekend, the BayBears begin a five-game home series against the Mississippi Braves from April 25 to 29.

The BayBears also have a new promotional schedule. Sunday Fun Day gives families a chance to play catch on the field at Hank Aaron Stadium before the game. After the game, kids 12 and under can run the bases. Sunday

games can also be Bark in the Park days, where fans are invited to bring their pooches to

the game. Every Monday Matters games invite

fans to bring two books, gently used clothing or two non-perishable food items to receive a free grandstand ticket.

The donations benefit places like the Bay

Area Food Bank and Goodwill Easter Seals. If college baseball is more your speed, the South

Alabama Jaguars host a three-game series against Georgia State April 24 to 26. The Jags play at beautiful Stanky Field on the USA campus in Mobile.

F oley continues i t s y e a r- l o n g centennial cel-

ebration on Sunday, April 19, with a birthday picnic for the city in Heritage Park. Foley Mayor John Koniar and the city coun-cil invite everyone to at-tend the event, which will include a concert by the Baldwin Pops. Festivities and entertainment will begin at 4 p.m.

Guests are invited to bring their lawn chairs and a picnic meal, or pur-chase hot dogs, burgers and drinks from a vendor in the park. Event plan-ners say this will be an official birthday party for the city, so look for special surprises at this free event.

“A special centennial gift basket will be awarded for the best decorated pic-nic spread, so folks are encouraged to get creative with their picnic display,” said Linda Hula, event planner with the city of Foley.

Foley Elementary School’s show choir “Fame” will kick off the celebration, performing on the stage on the western base of the new Centennial Plaza. Following the performance, historic homes and businesses will be recognized with certificates presented by Centennial Committee members.

At 6 p.m., the Baldwin Pops will perform a special concert from the pavilion, joined by top Baldwin Coun-ty band students, as a part of their scholarship series. Conductor Dr. Roger Jones has composed a Centennial Tribute March in honor of Foley’s 100th birthday that will be premiered at the event. The Pops also will be performing several other marches written in 1915, along with other popular selections, during this spring concert in the park.

By Jill Clair [email protected]

A fter a busy week full of quick meals followed by a trip home to Georgia to see my family, where

we enjoyed steaks, barbecue, Mexican food and a lot of my mom’s amazing cook-ies, we were due for some healthy eating and a night at home, so we decided to make a grain bowl packed with vegetables and topped with tofu. I know what you’re thinking: only hippies eat tofu. That is gross. I am not going to read the rest of this article. Moving on.

OK. I can’t make you believe I’m not a hippie (I kind of am, if I’m being honest), and I can’t force you to try tofu or continue reading. However, I can tell you that tofu can always be substituted with boneless, skinless chicken breasts, which might convince you that you can make this meal or a variant of it without being too weird.

Anyway. I love meals like this one because it doesn’t take all day, but there’s some chopping and mixing and my fa-vorite — stir-frying. Stir-frying is one of my favorite ways to cook. I love cranking up the heat, throwing my veggies into the pan and hearing them sizzle, stirring them constantly and basically feeling like one of those guys at the Hibachi restaurants — except I can’t do all the cool tricks and juggle bottles of olive oil or make a volcano out of an onion. But I can stir-fry some vegetables into deliciousness, and so can you.

tofu stir-fry with sweet and sour cabbage

Ingredientsn 1 cup rice, any type, cooked (2 to 3 cups cooked rice, depending on

the type)for the tofu (or chicken):n 3/4 pound tofun 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy saucen 2 teaspoons minced gingern 1 garlic clove, mincedn 2 teaspoons honey or sugar n 2 tablespoons canola oiln 2 teaspoons sesame oilfor the sweet and sour cabbage:n 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy saucen 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegarn 2 teaspoons sugarn 3 tablespoons water or vegetable brothn 1 teaspoon cornstarchn 1 tablespoon canola oil or peanut oiln 2 teaspoons minced fresh gingern 2 garlic cloves, mincedn 1 large red pepper, sliced thinn 1 medium red cabbage (about 1 1/2 pounds), cored and coarsely

chopped or shredded (about 5 cups shredded or chopped)n Other vegetables (I added broccoli) n Salt to taste

PreparationBegin cooking the rice as directed. Make the baked tofu (or chicken): Preheat the oven to 375 F. Line

a sheet pan with parchment. Pat the tofu dry with paper towels and cut into dominoes, about 1/3 inch thick. In a large, wide bowl whisk together all of the marinade ingredients for the tofu. Pat each square of tofu with paper towels, then dip into the marinade, making sure to coat both sides. Transfer to the baking sheet. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes, until the edges are just beginning to color and the marinade sets on the surface of the tofu (If using chicken, bake until done). Remove from the heat and keep warm while you stir-fry the vegetables.

for the stir fry: In a small bowl or measuring cup combine the soy sauce, wine vinegar, agave nectar or sugar, water or broth, and cornstarch. Mix together well. Have all the ingredients prepped and within arm’s length of your pan.

Heat a 14-inch flat-bottomed wok or 12-inch stainless steel or cast iron skillet over high heat until a drop of water evaporates within a second or two when added to the pan. Swirl in the oil by adding it to the sides of the pan and swirling the pan, then add the garlic and ginger and stir-fry for no more than 10 seconds. Add the red pepper and stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the cabbage and sprinkle with salt. Stir-fry for 1 to 2 minutes, until the vegetables begin to wilt. Stir the sweet and sour mixture and swirl it into the wok. Stir-fry 15 to 20 seconds, then cover and cook 30 seconds. Uncover and stir-fry 1 minute, or until the vegetables are crisp-tender.

Divide the rice among 4 bowls (or plates). Top with the cabbage and pepper stir fry, arrange the tofu pieces on top, and serve.

W ith the death of su-perb British fanta-sy writer Sir Terry

Pratchett a few weeks ago, I felt compelled to reread some of his works as a sort of tribute to a man who has brought me years of enjoy-ment with his “Discworld” series — especially the book that introduced me to Pratchett, “Wyrd Sisters.”

“Wyrd Sisters” is as much a satire as it is a character and world-build-ing novel, taking some very solid shots at William Shakespeare, “Macbeth,” “Hamlet,” the popular con-ceptions of witches and even a bit of a riff on fairy tales.

A jealous relative has killed the King of Lancre, who is now stuck (liter-ally) haunting his castle. But his infant son has been

delivered into the care of three witches, includ-ing the formidable Granny Weatherwax, who refuse to meddle in politics.

As a Shakespeare enthu-siast, I found the parodies of both plays spot on and very fun – elements of it hold up very favorably next to “Shakespeare in Love.” As a fan of fantasy nov-els, I was delighted to see how Pratchett handled the problem of needing to get a usurper off the throne with an heir to the throne who’s not even potty trained.

Also, his constant foot-note annotations are a con-stant comic relief through-out the text.

He may no longer be with us, but Pratchett’s numer-ous novels will give you plenty to read for at least a few months.

the sun is shining, the temperatures are rising and the flowers are in bloom which means that spring has definitely sprung in

south Alabama! However, to the avid outdoorsman, this beautiful season also brings with it unwanted nuisances such as snakes, mosquitoes, ticks and red bugs. Don’t let those spring-time pests ruin a good day’s hunt or outdoor adventure by following these simple tips.

Mosquitoes and flying insectsBest mosquito prevention: Use a Thermacell. This

device costs around $30 and is personally the best mos-quito repellent I’ve ever used (and mosquitoes love me). The manufacturer also claims it prevents “no-seeums.”

other flying insect prevention: Avon Skin So Soft or any bug spray containing DEET tends to work well for mosquitoes, “bull gnats,” “no-seeums,” etc.

snakesBest prevention: Wear snake boots, gaiters or chaps.Tip: Be aware of your surroundings! Most venomous

Southern snakes are camouflaged, so always be aware of where you are stepping, reaching and sitting.

What to do if bitten: Try to remember shape and color of snake. Immediately seek medical assistance. Try to keep wound below level of heart.

What Not to do if bitten: Don’t apply a tourniquet, suck out venom, cut wound open or apply ice.

ticks and red bugs (aka chiggers)Best prevention: Cover as much skin as possible. Wear

long pants and long-sleeve shirts. Tuck shirt in waist-band. Wear tall socks and tuck pants in boots. Apply bug repellent to waist and feet directly. Apply bug repellent containing DEET or Permethrin to clothes (not skin).

tips: Avoid sitting directly on ground when hunting. Sit on cushion or small chair. Shower immediately when finished. Be sure to look over entire body for ticks.

how to remove a tick: Grasp tick with tweezers as close to skin as possible and pull upward. Clean area with alcohol — or soap and water — afterward. Seek medical assistance immediately if rash, fever, headache, muscle pain and/or any gastrointestinal symptoms de-velop.

CHEW ON THIS

By Jill Clair [email protected]

I don’t get down to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach much these days, as I spend most of my time

in Mobile working. However, I re-cently got to go down on my day off to have lunch with a couple of my good friends who live down there, and we met at The Diner, the new restaurant that is taking on the seemingly doomed build-ing on 2nd Street that has been a Mexican restaurant, Rhythm & Ribs and most recently, Big Daddy’s Grill Gulf Shores.

First, the service was great, even though the restaurant was busy. I arrived first and was seated immediately, and as each new person sat down at our table, our sweet waitress popped by immediately to take drink orders. She checked on us throughout our meal and even helped me out when I mistakenly ordered the “Steve’s Famous Burger” without reading that it was a 2½-pound burger that I never could have consumed (I went for the All-American instead, which is more manageable at half a pound).

What I liked most about The Diner and what I think

I was sold on ordering a burger when I heard about the toasted, buttered hawaiian roll bun. everything tastes good on hawaiian rolls. But even if this burger had been on a regular bun, it still would have been a great burger. Also, the fries were perfect.

will help it last in Gulf Shores, however, was the variety on the menu. The selection wasn’t so big that I couldn’t fig-ure out what to order, but there’s definitely something for everyone — tuna melt, grilled chicken sandwich, gyro, fried pork chops, burgers, seafood, salads, soups and even pasta. And although the restaurant does have many options, each item we ordered was prepared and presented well.

This restaurant is definitely not groundbreaking or life changing, but it’s a great lunch spot with lots of options and great prices, and I think that’s exactly what that spot on 2nd Street needs.

My friend Ally ordered half chicken salad melt, which is the diner’s simple homemade chicken salad served with swiss cheese on texas toast, along with a cup of the soup of the day, tomato bisque.

the 7th annual Delta Woods and Waters Expo, cel-ebrating the rich ecosystem and beauty of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, returns to the 5 Rivers Delta Resource

Center April 23 through 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.The event, sponsored by the city of Spanish Fort, fea-

tures informative presentations, exhibits and interactive displays from outdoorsmen, professionals, educators and outdoors enthusiasts.

Presenters this year are Dr. John C. Hall and Rosa New-man Hall. Dr. Hall is the director of the Black Belt Museum at the University of West Alabama, an author and an ex-pert of Mobile Tensaw Delta explorer William Bartram. Rosa Newman Hall will portray “Moccasin Woman,” a representation of Creek Indian women in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. She will also share knowledge about food, cooking, women’s social role, camp life, deerskin trade and other Creek issues.

Other exhibits and presenters include turkey calling, hunting safety and youth shooting, small boat handling, fly fishing, kayaking demonstrations, rod and reel cast-ing, live raptor programs, delta mammals, wildlife and birds and more.

The first two days of the expo are reserved for student field trips, but April 25 is Family Day, with free admission to anyone interested in attending.

There will also be $5 delta boat tours for 30-minute excursions and opportunities to rent canoes and kayaks.

The mission of the Delta Woods and Waters Expo is to promote responsible outdoor recreational experiences.

There is onsite parking and a free shuttle bus service available.

While you're at the expo, follow the tempting smells of smoking barbecue and head over to the food tent for some juicy and delicious pulled pork. The $5 meal in-

cludes a pulled pork sandwich, chips and cookies; drinks are available for $1.

There’s also a boat show at the expo. Enter your classic boat in the Delta Woods and Waters Expo Wooden Boat Show at 5 Rivers' Bartram Landing. The boat show is a non-judged event with no entry fees. All classic wooden boats are welcome, from work boats to project boats and, of course, those that have been complete-ly refurbished and restored.

Butch Patrick, aka Ed-die Munster, will be at this year’s show all weekend along with the Munster Koach and Dragula. Fans can meet Butch, get an au-tograph and take a picture with the Munster Koach and Dragula.

Bama Coast Cruise is free to the public and includes free parking. The cars will line Main Street for easy viewing.

One of the highlights of the show is the 14-mile cruise Saturday from The Wharf, down the scenic beach highway and back. This enables beach-goers to enjoy the parade, and par-ticipants are able to enjoy the sugar white beaches of Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

S o you’ve decided to heed ol’ Ben’s advice, ditch the water and start drinking wine to show ev-

eryone just how wise you are. Now you’re standing alone in the wine aisle of your grocery store with thousands of labels staring at you and you have no clue what you are looking at. They may as well be written in a foreign language; in fact, some are!

First of all, congratulations on becoming the world’s newest oenophile. Wine labels, when you know what to look for, can actually tell you a lot about the wine inside the bottle. From the label, you’ll know the producer, the brand, the varietal, or grape, the alcohol content, the growing region, the year and the bottler.

When learning how to read wine labels, the grape va-riety is usually the first thing people look for. Most new world wines (California, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, etc.) will include the grape (chardonnay, merlot, etc.) on the label which makes life easier. However, European countries like France, Italy and Spain (old world) will use regional names like Burgundy, Chianti or Champagne on their labels. Each region, by law, allows only specific grapes to be planted there, so the wines are named for the vineyard or village they came from rather than for

the grapes. Also, most agree the place the grapes were grown that

is most important to the quality and characteristics of the wine. The French term “terroir” refers not only to the type of soil in which grapevines grow, but other factors that can influence the character of the grapes, including climate, wind and altitude. On new world wines, you’ll spot regions like Napa Valley or Sonoma listed on wine labels to help give the wine its place.

Next issue, we’ll discuss the name of the wine producer, the vintage and alcohol content, what these mean and where you can find them.

Oh, and by the way, oenophile means wine enthusiast.
