The weather is warming and the sun is shining (most of the time), so it’s time for us to pack away boots and coats in exchange for shorts and flip flops.

This first week of this issue of the Buzz has three events, all in South Baldwin. The Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival is May 1 and 2 in Fol-ey and includes the tethered hot air balloon rides, arts and crafts booths, vendors, crawfish boils and the new Mitchell Brothers and Sons Carnival. South Baldwin’s Relay for Life begins May 2, and lasts all day, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. Come celebrate the survivors and help support fighters of this disease that has taken too many lives too early.

On May 2 and 3, Pirates Cove Wood Boat Festival will dock in Josephine. View boats from long-time and amateur collectors and a boat building competition. Other activities will include a nautical fair, Pirates Ball, children’s boat painting and boat races.

Orange Beach Wine Festival (known to many as Waves of Wine) will be making a splash at the Caribe Resort on May 9. Grab your friends and taste some wine (craft beer for those not into vino), a cruise around the resort, hors d’oeuvres, live music, a souvenir wine glass and more.

On May 13, make your way back down to the Orange Beach Billfish Tournament. Don’t have $6,000 to enter a boat to fish? No worries! Come and watch the weigh-ins of the catches May 15, 7 to 10 p.m. and May 16, 6 to 10 p.m. This is the first stop of the tournament until it returns in July for the crowning of grand champion.

The Hangout Music Festival, the only music fest of its kind, will make it annual appear-ance in Gulf Shores May 15 through 17. Get your tickets before they sell out to see artists like Beck, Sam Smith, Zac Brown Band, the Foo Fighters and many more.

And the countdown to summer begins …

20years

By Jay SowersGCM Photo [email protected]

The Relay for Life of South Baldwin will take over Foley’s Heritage Park on May 2, and

organizers have been preparing for months for this fundraising event.

Devonna Johnson, community manager for Relay for Life’s Mid-South Division, said her goal is to have a huge turnout for the day-long event.

“Our goal this year is to have the community come out and join us May 2, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. as we celebrate cancer survivors, remember those we have lost and fight back against this disease that has taken too many lives.”

Johnson said this is the 20th year of the Relay for Life of South Baldwin.

People can sign up to participate in the event as a team, or can make donations online.

As of the end of March, 145 par-ticipants with 15 teams had signed up to participate in the event, and more than $17,300 dollars had been donated to the event.

Information about fundraisers organized by the teams can also be found on the website for Relay for Life of South Baldwin.

History of Relay for LifeCourtesy of RelayForLife.com

In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash., ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Can-cer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern: cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay for Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer.

WHERE TO GO

The sixth annual Hangout Music Festival comes on the heels of an announcement that it

will be around for another 10 years. National festival music heavyweight Goldenvoice will be on board to help run the shows.

“From the beginning, the Hangout Music Festival's main priority has been to create an incredible fan experience,” Hangout founder Shaul Zislin said. “With our recently announced partner-

ship with Goldenvoice, who produces top festivals including Coachella, we have found a partner that shares our vi-sion in both fan experience and music programming. This partnership offers an exciting opportunity for the overall enhancement of Hangout.”

Hangout Music Festival is the first and only festival of its kind. The festi-val’s extraordinary beach backdrop and sandy walkways make Hangout Music Festival the premiere destination for

music fans. This year the festival will be May 15

through 17 and will feature headliners Foo Fighters, Zac Brown Band, Beck, My Morning Jacket, Skrillex, Paramore, Foster The People, Spoon and more than 70 bands on the beautiful white sandy beaches of Gulf Shores.

Food offerings include fresh local seafood offerings prepared by re-nowned regional chefs in the Alabama Gulf Seafood Courtyard.

History of the festival

By Destiny Brown

P aul Duncan, artist and board member of the Fol-ey Performing Arts Center, brought the idea of Art in the Park to the quaint town of Foley in

1972.“Back when Art in the Park fi rst began, the arts cen-

ter was not very old,” said Linda Conier, chairman of the Foley Performing Arts Center. “In the beginning, it was for people who lived locally. We sent out applica-tions to the show, people would come and pick a spot, set up and we would go with the show.”

The event eventually reached the ears of surround-ing artists, not just locals.

“Over the years it grew and grew,” Conier said. “Sometime in the early 90s, we switched over to a jur-ied show and we didn’t take just anyone. We then had categories, and when we fi lled those categories we had a waiting list.”

The event has always taken place under the promi-nent oak trees in John B. Foley park.

“We have continued to be a smaller show, but a quality show,” Conier said. “We try to limit the number of different types of exhibitors so the people who shop can get a good look at the variety of things.”

Many vendors have been added to this year. “With all of the vendors, it should be a terrifi c show,”

Conier said. “We always try to make it the best we can.”

Dear, dear readers, I need to be vulnerable with you for a moment. I’m tired of trying new recipes that take an hour and a half to complete and require expensive or weird in-gredients. There… I said it. Honestly, all I want these days is to pour some cans into a slow cooker before I leave for work and come home to do minimal dishes and eat before 8:30 p.m.

This is real life right now. I’m just in a tired phase. And I don’t even have kids. Pray for me.

I’m sure some of you can relate, so I feel like I should share this with you to make sure we all know being hu-man is OK, and we can’t be hard on ourselves for want-ing to eat Mexican-inspired slow cooker food made with canned goods pretty much every day. Right now, I just don’t have the energy for much else.

In the back of my mind, I always feel pressure while writing food columns to mimic Better Homes and Gardens or some other perfection-driven magazine or blog (or Pinterest) and present to you something new, something pretty, something different — all the time.

The problem is, to quote one of America’s favorite YouTube stars, “Ain’t nobody got time for that.” I know most of you don’t have time for that, and I want you to know that I’m in the real world with you.

Most of us truly enjoy cooking and trying new dishes, but some stages of life require simplicity and a little repetition. And that’s perfectly fi ne.

This is why I am in love with these slow cooker

meals, both of which I’ve made in the span of a week. In addition to being time savers, these recipes are so affordable, and you can keep the ingredients on hand at all times — stock the freezer with chicken breasts, keep some canned goods and spices on hand, and you’re good to go. These meals can also be made in bulk and frozen. Hallelujah!

What are some of your favorite simple, go-to recipes? I know many of you fi gured out the secret to real-world cooking many years ago, so I’d love your input. Email me at [email protected] to share! I’d love to give your recipes a try and maybe even share them with our readers to spread the love.

L ooking for a l ight beach read to go with our new sunny sea-

son?Take a delightful trip

into the sardonic world of the master of the short essay David Sedaris with his “Let’s Explore Diabe-tes with Owls.”

In typical Sedaris fash-ion, there is a series of stories that have elements of truth interwoven with humor and happenings that simply have to be fiction.

You may not love each

vignette within its pages, but every reader is cer-tain to find at least one or two parts that they will enjoy.

Truthfully, any Sedaris text would make a won-derful beach read, as the essays held within can be read on their own and completely out of order, as there is no narrative thread to worry about in the personal essay style.

So, let down your guard and let Sedaris into your literary life — you’ll be glad you did.

AIMING AND ANGLING

Blake Maraman Registered nurse, photojournalist and outdoors [email protected]

Baldwin County native Ricky Hagen-dorfer and his wife Laura enjoy fi shing on their 26-foot outboard any chance they get. On March 20, their fi shing trip turned into quite the adventure.

Here’s their story:

“Seas were calm, less than one foot, so we decided to leave early in an effort to ride out 50 to 70 miles into the Gulf. We left Fort Morgan before daylight and arrived at our spot by 8:15 a.m. We decided to try our luck at catching some wahoo with some high-speed lures. Sure enough, in less than fi ve minutes we had a fi sh on! The fi sh tried its best to get our line tangled

with another boat in our area. After the fi sh ran out approximately 300 yards of line, the battle ensued. Within 15 minutes, we had a nicely striped wahoo aboard the “Reel Honey.” It didn’t take long before we had a double hook-up. It was a successful fi shing trip that was made even more exciting by catching two amberjack on the way back to the ramp. I tried to help my wife Laura when she appeared to be a bit out of breath while fi ghting the fi sh. However, she stated (as she often does), ‘No one is taking my pole; I can catch my own fi sh. Keep your hands off!’

Sure enough, she was right!”

Scott always orders the menu item that seems the weirdest, but despite the word “throats,” this is an approachable dish that was pre-sented beautifully. While you don’t see snapper throats on menus that often (at least I don’t), this was a meaty, fl avorful dish that was made even better by the delicious sides — kale and pearled cous cous.

By Jill Clair [email protected]

Remember when we went to Pensacola for dinner at Global Grill and I was lamenting about

the lack of mid-priced, creative restau-rants in Baldwin County? Well, thanks to Pete Blohme (more commonly known as Panini Pete), we can add one more restaurant in Bald-win County to this category. Sunset Pointe is exactly the kind of restaurant that needed to be at Fly Creek Marina, and it’s exactly the kind of restaurant I fi nd myself craving.

When we fi rst moved to South Alabama, I was ob-sessed with seafood. However, three years later, I al-ways fi nd myself bored with it. At nicer restaurants, I generally opt for a non-seafood dish because I’ve been disappointed so many times.

Not at Sunset Pointe. It’s obvious that the seafood and all the other ingredients are fresh, and the creativity with which the dishes are prepared is intriguing, but not unapproachable. I found myself gobbling up the incredible South Mediterranean Tuna Crudo, savoring each bite of the chef’s take on ceviche — raw tuna mari-nated in lime juice and mixed with cucumber chunks, thin slices of radish, red onion, fried capers, crumbles of feta cheese and olive oil drizzled over everything. Defi nitely not boring.

The only disappointment was that I couldn’t eat more at the end of the night. In addition to the Seared

This delightful sandwich combines two of my favorite things. I love a BLT, so I couldn’t resist. Plus, it’s served on delicious focaccia bread. I’m looking forward to ordering this again when tomatoes are in season, because I’m sure Sunset Pointe will source them locally and they’ll be incredible. The grilled slaw that comes with it is the best slaw I’ve ever put in my mouth.

The name of the wine producer or winery is usually pretty obvious for most regions. In new world wines, it is usually the most prominent and largest name on the label. Old world wines will feature place prominently and the producer is less ob-vious. The exception is Bordeaux where you will see in big text either Domaine (home) or Chateau (castle) followed by the producer’s name.

The vintage is the year the grapes were grown for a wine. Since wine characteristics and quality can vary from vintage to vintage, this is important to know. Most wines are produced to be enjoyed immediately. Some require a few years to age and by regionally law, some are required to sit in oak barrels for a specifi c length of time before they can be bottled. It is not uncommon to see the vintage years from 2008 thru 2014 on store shelves now.

Alcohol content can give you a clue on the sweetness of the wine. The process of fermenting breaks down the sugars and produces ethanol (the alcohol) in wine thus

one could deduct that the higher the alcohol content, the lower the sugar content.

And while everything above still may sound confus-ing, the best advice is to do a quick bit of research, seek recommendations from family, friends or wine stew-ards, or seek out a local wine tasting before you hit the shelves of a wine shop. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
