From the President

Bonnie Ambrose, Guild President

I hope you had the opportunity to attend the February Meeting. More than 200 members and guests attended this meeting. Weeks Ringle was our speaker and the auditorium was electric. It was so great to see some members who are not always able to attend. I think a Guild meeting is intended to connect with dear friends, make new ones and learn something about quilting. February’s meeting accomplished that for me. As a long time member I want to ensure the vitality of the Guild. Members trust the Quilt Guild Leadership to ensure the sustainability of the Guild. Fiscal responsibility is one of the major tenets of sustainability and as I have shared with you over the last few months, the Guild’s finances have recently required using our savings account to fund basic operating expenditures. In an effort to reverse this trend, at the January Board Meeting, the Board voted to increase dues to $45 per year and to simplify the dues structure to one level of membership. This increase will become effective for the 2016-17 year. Membership dues are one of three significant ways the guild collects money for operating expenses. Our operating expenses include programs and workshops, meeting space rent, and the Endowment. These expenses are about $85,000 annually. Currently our revenue (which includes membership dues, show income, and raffle ticket income) brings in approximately $42,000 a year. Currently expenses are exceeding revenues at about $45 thousand a year. The Guild is a registered “Non-Profit” organization; it is imperative that the revenue sources are adequate to meet the operating expenses. By increasing dues and finding ways to reduce some expenses we will be able to operate more efficiently and ensure that we maintain the quality of the Guild. You will hear other suggestions about reducing expenses in the coming months. Recognize that being a member has many benefits:

• Free Quilt Show entry for member’s quilts • Free Quilt Show ticket • Monthly Programs • Mini-lessons • National speakers • Extensive Library Collection with check-out privileges

We want you to be proud of this Guild and what it has to offer. Support the Board in these decisions and please let us know your thoughts about other ways we can retain the quality of our meetings, Show and Guild. It is important that our Guild maintain its savings account. The savings account serves as a contingency fund which provides financial backing for unexpected expenses. Remember that our annual Quilt Show requires a large undertaking not only in volunteer hours but also in the outlay of funds. While the guild has purchased insurance for insurable risks, there are risks for which it is not practical to purchase insurance. Thank you for your support!

Lesson of the Month

Linda Bartley, 7th VP-Education

The Teacher is on Spring Break! The Lesson of the Month is taking a trip and will not be in class

at the Guild Meeting on March 3 (Happy Birthday to my daughter!). Use this time wisely and go sign up to volunteer at the show and buy raffle tickets.

Class will resume in April. Enjoy your Spring Break and I'll see you at the Show!

OMG! The

show is less than a month

away! Judy Kriehn, VP-Show

Show Dates: March 11-13

Location: Dallas Market Hall

Theme: Words and Letterforms

What’s Special: 35th Anniversary Show

This past weekend, I dragged Larry back to the storage unit with me. Not because we had another break-in, but because I wanted to look for a couple of items. While poking around, I noticed several of Helena Hibbs’ old scrapbooks, carefully wrapped and stored in a crate. I pulled a couple out and noticed dates going back to our founding. So, I decided to snag a couple scrapbooks to see if I could find any photos from early shows. Sure enough! I found old posters, lists of award winners, and yellowed, but still quite clear photos of quilts members had displayed. It was fun flipping through the books and seeing the kinds of programs we had then, the dues we charged, the bylaws, etc. The photos below are from our second quilt show, held in 1981 at the Unitarian Church. I can remember having a Dorothy Hamill “wedge” haircut in the late 1970’s like this raffle ticket salesperson. Those quilts on display would look right at home in our show today, although they probably wouldn’t be hand-quilted now…

I hope you’re making a point of telling your friends and neighbors about the Show, so they can come and see our wonderful creations. If you use social media, please use the tag #DallasQuiltShow2016 on your show-related posts and photo shares.

Don’t forget! Sign up to be a volunteer. Get your entries completed by turn-in day, which is Wednesday, March 9. And don’t forget the Preview Party on Thursday, March 10 at 7p.m. – a special evening for members, entrants, sponsors and their families. It’s a nice chance to see the quilts without jostling “those mean ladies with

their big purses” as my uncle calls the serious quilt show shoppers…

Show Volunteers Needed

Cindy Matthews, Volunteer Co-Chair

If you happened to miss securing your favorite volunteer position in January or February… it’s not too late! This year you have an extra meeting in which to sign up! We still need more volunteers to make the show run smoothly. Remember that volunteering for only 2 hours gets you free admission to the show. Four hours nets you an awesome gift, and after 8 hours of volunteering, you receive a 2016 bar for your volunteer pin. Guild membership is not required, so grab your neighbors, relatives and friends and write down their names for a job! Email Candy Mahaffey at [email protected] and she will help find the perfect spot for you during the show!

Show Security Gail Sellers,

Security Committee

The quilt show is just around the corner! It’s not too early to start thinking about security precautions to avoid theft of your belongings:

• Keep your purse closed and close to your body. Do not lay it down and look away while making a purchase.

• Consider putting your money and credit cards in your pocket. To avoid carrying your purse or purchases around the show floor, take advantage of our “bag check” service. For a small fee, the staff in the Show Office will keep an eye on your belongings.

• If using credit or debit cards, don’t forget to retrieve them after every purchase and put them safely away.

• Keep an eye on your purchases and other valuables. • Be aware of others around you. If you witness something you consider unusual,

ask a vendor to call the police officer on duty so you can report your observation(s).

Personal Quilt Tours

Marian Ann Montgomery, PhD

Treat yourself to a personal quilt tour at the Show by our member, Dr. Marian Ann Montgomery, curator of clothing and textiles at the Museum of Texas Tech University. The tours are given on Friday and Saturday of the Show at 10:30a.m., 1p.m. and 3p.m. and cover the judged show and special exhibits. Please meet Marian Ann near the Mini Quilt Auction area close to the Show entrance. If you have questions please contact her at (214) 202-8333.

May 3, 2016 Guild Meeting speaker – Teresa Wong Lecture: “A History of Japanese Quilts” Teresa will share with us the history of Japanese quilting from the 1950s through today. Audience members will hear the story of how the quilt was imported from America and was quickly adopted and adapted to become a favorite pastime in Japan today. Dozens of photos of stunning contemporary Japanese quilts will be shown, along with beautiful American quilts and historical Japanese quilts. No workshops this month. www.teresaduryeawong.com June 2, 3016 Guild Meeting speaker – Rägi Marino Lecture: “A History of Airplane Quilt Patterns” Guild member, Rägi Marino, will bring to us a lecture which chronicles the history of airplane quilt patterns from their first appearance in the 1920’s to the present. With a PowerPoint presentation and actual quilts, Rägi explores early renamed quilt block patterns, simple stylized airplanes, and later complex airplane quilts. Through these patterns quilts take flight into the aviation world. Check RMarino Marino Designs on Craftsy.com as well as her facebook page, www.facebook.com/MarinoDesignsTX No workshops this month. Programs (continued from page 5)

Friday, October 7, 2016 Workshop: “Let Me Surprise You” Finally, a class that you know you have brought the right things for! In this fun-filled class, a kit of CUT fabrics is furnished. This is a wonderful workshop for those who just want to sew and not have any cutting or thinking to do. This class is the most popular class Charlotte offers. It fills quickly and is a SURPRISE in more ways than one. It is a mystery type class. No one gets any hints and yet those who take the class will want to take another. All kits in class are the same, there is no choice for the students. A relaxed day of laughter and sewing. Saturday, October 8, 2016 Workshop: “Surprise Yourself” This is a design class – using basic elements to design your own quilt, taken from Charlotte’s book, Surprise Yourself. This workshop will use the techniques for simple design. Using easy units and an artistic eye, you will be creating your own designs as well as not needing the crazy directions often found in patterns and books. With this freedom you can easily see how many quilts are broken down and put back together again! Certain patterns are easier than others and using basic units you will begin to create instead of just copy. This class is full of information, real quilts and real solutions to everyday problems in quilt making. The book is not required for the class, but it sure is a great source! www.quiltmakersstudio.com

Programs and Workshops

Marcia Wood, 3rd VP-Programs and Workshops

Thank you members and guests, for supporting the Weeks Ringle workshops in February. I think all attendees would agree that it was time well spent. See a few photos in this newsletter. As you look at the future lectures and workshops listed in this newsletter, you will notice a change. Charlotte Angotti, originally scheduled for July, has been moved to October 2016. This will allow you to take advantage of both of her workshops, as well as participate in TAQG with Kimberly Einmo in July. Our TAQG representative Donna Petrick will be giving you more info about TAQG, but suffice it to say, it will be another great opportunity to hear a national speaker. It just happens to fall on the same weekend as our July meeting this year. Charlotte was pleased to move to October. She wants it to be “a really big deal” with her workshops filled. (See above for further info about her workshops.) April Meeting reminder: Just a highlighted reminder that for the April Guild meeting with Mickey Depre, you need to come prepared for some handwork (English Paper Piecing) DURING the Guild meeting. That will be a treat! So bring one 3.5″ square of fabric, one pin, one needle, basting thread and small scissors. Thimble optional. Mickey will provide the Hexagons for us. Sign up now for Mickey Depre and Charlotte Angotti Workshops!

Community Service - CFK

Mary Howard, 1st VP-Community Service

More Beary Special Quilts... Isn’t it amazing how different quilts can be but use the same challenge fabric? Participating in the annual CFK challenge is a fun way to help the children in our community. These examples from the 2015 Covers for Kids Challenge were made by Sue Holland (top right), Lynn Main (top left), Sharon Zeiner (bottom, left), and Happy Johns (bottom, right). Thank you to Sue, Lynn, Sharon, Happy and the others who participated in this challenge! This completes our gallery of 2015 pictures. (See previous newsletters for the others.)

We would like YOU to join us in this challenge in 2016. The challenge fabric will be available in April at the CFK table. Think of the challenge as an opportunity for you to get out of your ‘quilting box’ and to expand your quilting skills.

You can see the complete collection of 2015 Challenge Quilts at the Dallas Quilt Show in March. After the show the quilts will be distributed to the Vogel Alcove, Ronald McDonald House and the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center.

Covers for Kids Mary Howard,

1st VP-Community Service

We are six months into the guild year! While our wall calendars are still in the first quarter, the end of February marks the mid-point in the guild year. So how are we doing on our goal of 500 quilts for CFK? In February, we gave 15 quilts to Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, 16 to Ronald McDonald House, and 16 to Vogel Alcove for a total of 47 quilts. This brings our total so far to a total of 248 quilts for this guild year. On behalf of the children and youth we serve, a big hug and thank you to everyone who helped make these quilts! February’s workshop winner is Cynthia Bennett. Cynthia is receiving a voucher for a free guild workshop of her choice. Cynthia binds quilts for us after they come back from our quilters. Thank you Cynthia for all you lovingly do for the children and youth who benefit from your time finishing off CFK quilts! CFK WORKSHOPS We accomplished a lot at the January 30th Covers for Kids workshop. Thanks to all those who participated! These workshops are held at Hancock’s at Firewheel (on Highway 78/Lavon Dr.) in Garland. As shown in these pictures from the workshop, we generally add borders, turning too small quilt tops into just the right size. We also make backs. Not hard work at all, but very much needed. You bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies (scissors, seam ripper, etc.) We supply the quilt tops, fabric, thread, rotary cutters & mats, irons and ironing boards (and sometimes someone to do all the pressing). We promise lots of fun, laughs and you may even learn a new quilt trick. You will leave knowing you have helped a child or teen have a brighter tomorrow. Contact Rhonda Anderson: [email protected] to be added to the CFK workshop email list. 2016 CFK Workshop Schedule:

Notes from a Curator

Marian Ann Montgomery, PhD,

Curator of Clothing and Textiles,

Museum of Texas Tech University

Legacy of a Thousand Stitches: Quilts of the Museum of Texas Tech University on exhibit through May 15, 2016 The exhibit of 45 of the Museum’s quilts has been well received by the community and the local media. Segments from the Fox morning news program can be viewed at https://youtu.be/NhfwZtWzi7Q. The Devil’s Highway quilt mentioned in one of the segments has an interesting family history of never being slept under because the family thought it was jinxed. The top was made by Mrs. John Vaughn of Matador, Texas and finished by her sister who backed it with home dyed flour sack fabric from the Light Crust Flour Company. This quilt has added excitement to the exhibition process by not being where it was supposed to be and turning up later on two different occasions.

Museum of Texas Tech University.

Local quilters gained the attention of the student newspaper for their work supporting the exhibition by demonstrating hand quilting. During the exhibit, they worked on a quilt top made in the 1930s by Texas Technological College students in the Home Economics program.

For those that cannot make the trip to Lubbock, the exhibition catalog of 101 quilts including all those from the exhibit plus another 56 is available by calling the Museum Store at (806) 742-2436, Tuesday-Friday 10-5 or Saturday 1-5. The catalog will also be for sale at the Guild Store at Dallas Quilt Show 2016. Catalog of 101 of the quilts in the collection of the Museum of Texas Tech University.

Minutes from the November 5, 2015 General Meeting

Pat Aldrich, Guild Secretary

Quilter’s Guild of Dallas General Membership Meeting Congregation Shearith Israel Meeting Minutes February 4, 2016 6:30 p.m. – Curves – Do You Bias? Linda Bartley demonstrated various ways of producing a long, continuous bias binding strip – useful for not only regular binding jobs, but also for binding curved quilt edges or making interesting use of striped fabrics to add extra pizzazz to a quilt. President Bonnie Ambrose called the meeting to order at 7:17pm. New members and guests were acknowledged by standing, and Bonnie reminded everyone that name tags are available by signing up at the table in the back. Bonnie then asked the audience to turn to their neighbor and talk about what you love about quilting. Bonnie pointed out that there was a nice mention about the current quilt exhibit at Texas Tech University, curated by our own Dr. Marian Ann Montgomery, and she also announced that dues will be increased to $45 per year, effective with this fall’s membership renewal. There will be more details in the March newsletter. Bonnie presented this month’s workshop voucher to Cynthia Bennett. Thanks, Cynthia, for your contributions to Covers for Kids! Patty Edwards (Miniture Quilt Auction) said that 25 more mini quilts were turned in tonight! Then she introduced Lisa Mumford, Program Director of Ebby House, this year’s beneficiary of the annual Mini Quilt Auction. Lisa lives onsite with the young women of Ebby House. Ebby House was begun about four years ago. On a foster child’s 18th birthday, they are required to leave their foster home unless they are in high school; then they can finish high school. They start preparing for life on their own at age 16 with various classes, but it doesn’t really give them a good idea of what it’s really like. Eighty to ninety per cent of these young women spend some amount of time being homeless and on the streets. Ebby House focuses on these young women because of their vulnerability. Girls aged 18-24 are prime candidates / targets for prostitution, sex trafficking, etc. They have no one to fall back on. At Ebby House, they have up to 2 years to stay there. They are required to go to school and work, set goals, attend financial classes and counseling each week, as well as life skills classes (cooking, nutrition, health care, etc.). Also, there are about 400 elderly who live on campus – an intergenerational campus with onsite grandmas and plenty of opportunity for volunteering. Juliet Fowler is faith-based. There are over 6,000 homeless youth in Dallas / Collin counties, and there are only about 200 beds in the area for unaccompanied youth. There are only 13 beds at Ebby House. The girls of Ebby House will be at the quilt show and will select the “Pride of Dallas” quilt. Judy Kriehn (6th VP Show) announced that there are 136 vendors for the Quilt Show. Everyone needs to finish their entries! The layout for the Show is finished and so the packets will be mailed shortly. There are 407 entries. There are several new things planned for this Show. Please sign up to volunteer at the Show on the sheets at the table. This year’s volunteer gift is a tote bag. Everyone needs to be thinking about Quilt Show security – for example, if you can, leave your purse at home. If you see something suspicious, tell the security guard/police at the show. Judy also encouraged everyone to donate minis. Volunteer sign-up sheets

are at the table. And please turn in your block contest entries. Marcia Wood (3rd VP Programs and Workshops) highlighted some of our upcoming speakers. In March, Brenda Perry will be presenting “Waste Not, Want Not,” on scrap quilts and sharing from her collection of scrappy beauties. In April, Mickey Dupre will be presenting her lecture “Let’s Get Hexed,” which includes a trunk show of hexie quilts, some antique and some made by Mickey. This will be an “audience participation” lecture as attendees will work on basting a hexie as Mickey gives instructions! Please bring hand sewing supplies, including a 3 ½ inch square piece of fabric, needle, thread, pin, scissors. Donna Petrick (TAQG) and other TAQG representatives are at the table taking sign-ups for lunch for Rally Day, as well as selling raffle tickets for the two (yes, two!) pre-Rally Day baskets. There will also be two raffle baskets on Rally day. Val Hubbard (Nominating Committee) announced that the Nominating Committee for the 2016-2017 year consists of:

• Val Hubbard • Happy Johns • Ann West • Marilyn Dixon

If you are interested in serving on the Guild’s Board, please talk to one of these members. The Nominating Committee will be presenting the slate of officers in May. Bring & Brag Break Program: Marcia Wood introduced our speaker for this evening, Weeks Ringle. Weeks showed how quilts have transformed from the early American necessary bed coverings to the vibrant contemporary art form many are today. She traced how this transformation parallels the changes that have occurred over the last century or so in art, architecture, design and society. She showed how their quilts are expressive of the times in which we live. There were 156 members and 12 visitors and guests in attendance, and there were 4 new members. There were 10 door prizes from The Old Craft Store and our generous members. Please thank this shop for their support of the guild when you visit them. Bonnie adjourned the meeting at 8:53 pm. Respectfully submitted, Pat Aldrich
