Olde English Painter’s Guild Painting News Message from the President… JULY *** The middle of Summer *** As I send this message to you, I am in Virginia celebrating the 4th of July with family. The flag is waving in the breezes at the front door. We are planning grilled steak and chicken, with baked potatoes, corn, fresh fruit salad and apple pie. It’s so summer! And I feel blessed. I am thankful for a loving family and friends like you, proud to be an American, and hungry for that chicken! I hope all of you are enjoying the summer as a time to reflect and refresh. Now, hold on to your red, white and blue sneakers. WE ARE MOVING AGAIN to a new meeting place. Our search has been to find a comfortable environment with little distraction, little to no set-up and no charge. We have found that at Grace Lutheran Church in Rock Hill. Our next meeting, July 28, will be at the church. See specific directions in this newsletter. I would recommend you bring your lunch this first meeting. A refrigerator is available. We have the options now of using the York Chamber building or the Rock Hill Jaycees building if needed in the future. Comforting to have some backup. This month’s project is lovingly referred to as ‘Christmas in July’. Tina Sue will be teaching. Please see her instructions enclosed and bring a friend for a fun time together. Thanks to everyone who took advantage of taking home the donated surfaces last month. Enjoy creating, and be sure to bring them in to meeting to share! See you soon at the church. Have a great month! Message from the President…(the one we missed)

As we finish the beautiful month of June...

We’ve had lots of needed rain, a few great days of low humidity and now sunshine galore. The lilies are loving it!

We have several June birthdays also: Debby Brown (19th), Kathy Gantz (6th), and Pam Reece (19th). Hope you all have had a great month.

We will be meeting again this month on Sat. the 23rd at the Rock Hill Jaycees building, 196 Greyson Rd., Rock Hill. As normal, doors open at 9:00a, meeting starts at 9:30a. We had a great turnout on Jun 2 with everyone finding the location without problems, even if they did go by the building twice. Please see the minutes of the meeting in this newsletter for details.

A big thanks to Pam Myers for teaching the cute fall scene on a glass block. She was so generous with paint and paper inserts for the blocks. That made the project easy, fun and finished for all of us! We also had a huge participation for ‘show-n-tell’ last meeting. So proud of everyone for finishing projects as well as bringing in new work. It’s inspiring to all of us and shows that you are proud of your hard work too.

We will be working on a ‘Fourth of July’ inspired project this next meeting with Ruthy. Can’t believe we are that close to July already. Don’t forget: 1.) bring a friend to meeting when you can and 2.) start being serious about working up some projects for our craft sale (especially now that we are having to pay for meeting space). Bring them in, show us and tell us about them, and then I will carefully store them until needed for the show. That way, too, we will know how much we have ready to go.

See you at the meeting! Appreciate and enjoy your wonderful talent of painting!

COLORED PENCIL OVERLOAD I know some of you are sick and tired of hearing about colored pencils. Our last two seminars have been with colored pencil teachers and Debbie Jordan taught a chapter class with colored pencils. They have been wonderful seminars and I hate I missed Debbie’s class. I hear it was wonderful. But I know some of you feel like you have been inundated with colored pencil information? Well not me!! I can’t seem to get enough. Everything I look at I wonder how it would look in colored pencil. I am even taking my own pictures of things I really like and I am going to try my hand at “doing my own thing”. That means I won’t have anyone to tell me what colors to use or how to use them. I am finding that quite intimidating but challenging and we all need that challenge. We’ll see how that turns out. For those of you who still have the hunger for colored pencils I have run across this group on Facebook that I am finding very informative. These artists are well informed and ready to share their knowledge. They are also sharing pictures of their work and it is amazing. I am in awe!! So if you are thinking about colored pencils, well versed in colored pencils or just soaking up anything you can find on colored pencils then check out this group. Search “Colored Pencil Tips and Resources”. I had to answer one question and I started receiving their posts. I can’t share them and that is okay right now. I don’t know enough to respond to comments but I am learning a lot and enjoying the artwork. I have definitely not tried to post anything and it will be a good while before I do but the group is well worth checking out if colored pencils are your thing. Enjoy!!

Olde English Painters Guild Meeting Minutes - June 2, 2018

President Linda Miller called the meeting to order at 9:40 am.

Linda welcomed everyone to our new meeting space at the Jaycees Building.

The room had been set up for our group. Linda noted the Kitchen facilities and bathrooms. All of which were very assessable. The cost for this building is $50.00 per use.

The passing of our member Betty Mann was noted as well as Nancy Nicosia. We will miss them both. In other news, Brenda Helms has had a Kidney removed and is recovering at home.

Sunshine Chairperson, Hilda Crawford has sent cards from the chapter.

Linda announced that she placed a binder filled with menus from local restaurants in the back of the room. Also, donated painting books are also back there. Most members brought their own lunch.

Discussion then turned to the use of the Chamber of Commerce Building in York. They have made a new rule regarding access to the whole building. For the foreseeable future, most of the building will be locked and the only place available to us will be the meeting room. That means no access to the bathroom and Lobby area. Since we paid the $100.00 to be members of the Chamber, we find these rules unacceptable. It appears there has been some criminal activity and SLED is investigating some sort of case. The Director has been terminated. We hope to negotiate some sort of agreement with them so we can use the whole building, or ask for a refund.

Follow up discussion centered on how to raise the rental fees. Treasurer Debby Brown said we have $5,086.32 in our checking account and $2,651.13 in savings. It was decided that we would not have a problem affording the fee. In addition, we will still raise more money at the Fall Festival.

Seminars could be an issue as the Jaycee space is rented to a church group on Sundays. It was suggested we have one-day seminars or hold the event on Friday and Saturday. No action was taken.

In other action, Linda passed out SDP membership cards.

Debby Brown recounted going to SDP Convention in Daytona Beach. She was surprised and disappointed at disorganized fashion of the event and the small turnout of venders on the convention floor. It was noted that interest in decorative painting has waned in the last few years.

Debbie Jordan says that she is working with SDP to improve access to the Web Site. She and her committee are looking to train users in how to use the different media platforms. Members will have greater access to more information regarding SDP operations and programs.

Jean Wood, Bonnie Klocke, Ruth Orwig, Hilda Crawford all presented their Show & Tell projects. A nice photo of the group will be in the newsletter.

Ruth Orwig showed the project for the June 30th meeting. It will be a patriotic “Uncle Sam”.

Jean Wood asked for input for her project for September. It may be a giraffe on a yet to be determined surface.

The next Seminar will be Sandy McTier. Ruth showed 2 pieces she did with Sandy. The group said they are looking forward to her coming here next April.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:55.
