INTRODUCTION

Whitford Corporation was founded in 1969 todevelop and market fluoropolymer and other high-performance coatings. Whitford’s original productwas Xylan 1010, which represented a new conceptin coating formulation.

Whitford makes the largest, most complete lineof fluoropolymer coatings in the world.

This booklet covers an impressive number ofnonstick coatings formulated for application tocookware interiors, bakeware and counter-top ap-pliances. It also covers all decorative coatings in-cluding high-temperature enamels, silk screen inks,waterborne enamels and low-VOC enamels.

Whitford formulates, manufactures, and marketshigh-performance coatings. We do not apply thecoatings; rather, we instruct you as to the correctapplication methods or refer you to our extensivenetwork of custom coaters worldwide.

General InformationEterna is a totally new coating system that out-

performs every other coating tested.Eterna exhibits extremely high gloss to attract

the consumer’s eye at point-of-purchase andtested 10 times better in the standard Dry-Egg re-lease test over the neartest competitor. It alsolasted three times longer in the Accelerated Cook-ing Test.

Only conventional application equipment is re-quired and it’s engineered to work with a standardsurface preparation as well. Eterna is perfect forstainless steel or aluminum (pressed, cast andanodized).

EXCALIBURBreakthrough Technology for Cookware

1. The surface of the substrate is grit-blasted with anabrasive to roughen it, so other elements in the Excal-ibur process adhere to it better.

2. Then, the most important part: white-hot particlesof a special stainless steel (Whitford’s patented alloy)are sprayed onto the roughened surface.

3. The particles cool and harden, bonded to the sur-face, forming a series of “peaks and valleys” that pro-vide a permanent base for the nonstick coatings.

4. Several coats of tough fluoropolymers fill the “val-leys” and cover the “peaks,” held permanently inplace by the special stainless-steel “peaks.”

QUANTUM2, QUANTANIUMThe Internally Reinforced Coating System

General InformationQuantum, Quantum2 and QuanTanium are in-

ternally reinforced nonstick systems. They areunique, high-release, wear and scratch-resistantcoatings for application to cookware and other ar-ticles that are used for food preparation.

Quantum 7102-7203-7304, for which a UnitedStates Patent has been granted, is a breakthroughthree-coat system, with many differences betweenit and conventional nonsticks. The most importantone, however, lies in the primer coat itself. It con-tains no fluoropolymer. This permits the primer coatto be dedicated entirely to adhesion to the sub-strate.

Quantum2 7131-7232-7333, a second genera-tion, is internally reinforced with a special blend ofdiverse ceramic materials. It provides a wider win-dow of application tolerances and is more “userfriendly.” While the adhesion remains outstanding,Quantum2 has a smoother surface appearanceand has high gloss. In addition, this system has su-perb abrasion resistance and outstanding nonstickperformance. Finally, Quantum2 has improved sta-bility and storage and is less likely to settle duringtransit (which may cause gun clogging).

Quantum and Quantum2 are designed for sur-faces which require nonstick properties and aresubjected to abrasives and/or high wear. They maybe used on premium quality and gourmet cook-ware.

A special Quantum 7115/7320 formulation hasbeen developed for application by coil coatingmethods. This formulation produces the toughest,most durable coated bakeware available.

QuanTanium is an internally reinforced, water-borne, multicoat, nonstick system. It incorporates aunique mix of titanium particles blended into thecoating to give it superior scratch resistance to con-ventionally reinforced systems.

The excellent scratch resistance produced bythe incorporation of titanium particles causes thecoating to be harder and more durable than con-ventionally reinforced systems. QuanTanium isavailable for grit-blasted or smooth substrates.

General InformationXylan 8000 Series coatings are nonstick coat-

ings for commercial and consumer applications.They are durable finishes because the siliconeresin system has been modified to exhibit excellent“hot hardness.”

The ProductsXylan 8003: an inexpensive coating used princi-pally to coat commercial baking trays and econom-ical consumer bakeware, e.g., cookie sheets andmuffin tins.Xylan 8010: a waterborne, VOC-compliant coatingformulated as a decorative finish to replace porce-lain. While it does not have the temperature capa-bilities of porcelain, it will perform well to 650°F(340°C).

XYLAN 8000 SERIESSilicone Coatings

General InformationXylan 8100 Series coatings are the food-grade

version of our Xylan 1000 Series resin-bonded, low-friction industrial coatings. (See our “Guide to Whit-ford Industrial Products” for further information onthe 1000 Series coatings.) These formulae are pro-duced from FDA-acceptable materials and are per-mitted for direct food-contact applications asdefined in the “Code of Federal Regulations” (21CFR 175.300 - Resinous and Polymeric Coatings).They also meet USDA requirements for use in com-mercial food-processing facilities.

The ProductsXylan 8110: like Xylan 1010, provides the optimumcombination of properties available from a fluo-ropolymer coating: low coefficient of friction, verygood nonstick (release), wear resistance underload, 500°F (260°C) operating temperature, and re-sistance to a broad spectrum of chemicals and cor-rosive agents. It is specified on hamburger bunchutes in fast-food restaurants, circular knifeblades, and on countless components of food-pro-cessing machinery which require dry-film lubrica-tion.Xylan 8114: contains significantly more bondingresin relative to its content of PTFE lubricant versusXylan 8110. Altering the formula in this manner pro-duces finishes which are harder, more abrasion-re-sistant, glossier, and less porous than Xylan 8110.It has been used to coat steel pizza pans, deep fatfryers, popcorn poppers, food storage bins, andoven louvers.

XYLAN 8100 SERIESNonstick Coatings for

Food Processing Equipment

General InformationXylan two-coats are nonstick finishes for com-

mercial and consumer kitchenware. They consistof basecoat and topcoat formulae which are avail-able in both attractive metallic and rich nonmetalliccolors.

These multicoat finishes have several perform-ance advantages over single-coat nonsticks. First,the topcoats contain a high content of PTFE. Initialnonstick and long-term easy-clean properties aresuperior. Second, because two coats are thicker,they last longer. Third, because high-end consumerand commercial equipment commands higherprices, more costly high performance polymers canbe used in the formulations.

The ProductsXylan 8211 Basecoats/8213 Topcoats: economicalmulticoat system designed for aluminum cookware.Xylan 8231 Basecoats/8233 Topcoats: first gen-eration Xylan multicoat system. They set the stan-dard for wear and abrasion resistance for bothcommercial and noncommercial cookware. Pro-vides good performance at economical price.Xylan 8248 Basecoats/8241 Topcoats: may beapplied to cookware which has been pretreatedwith ceramic (frit) undercoatings.Xylan 8251 Basecoats/8253 Topcoats: secondgeneration of Xylan multicoat systems formulatedfor application to food-processing machinery,restaurant equipment, warming trays and bake-ware.Xylan 8254 Basecoats/8257 Topcoats: multicoatsystem designed to be applied over blasted sub-strate. This is the “best” two-coat currently avail-able.

Xylan 8255 Basecoats/8257 Topcoats: “No-blast”system, formulated to adhere to etched aluminumsubstrate without the need for grit blasting.Xylan 8272 Basecoats/8279 Topcoats: multicoatsystems designed to be applied “wet-on-wet,” i.e.,there is no need to “flash” the basecoat prior to theapplication of the topcoat. General InformationXylan three-coats are nonstick finishes for pre-

mium quality cookware. They consist of basecoat,midcoat and topcoat formulae which are availablein both attractive metallic and rich nonmetallic colors.

These multicoat finishes have two performanceadvantages over one- and two-coat nonsticks.First, the topcoats are composed almost entirely ofpure PTFE. Initial nonstick and long-term easyclean properties are superior. Second, becausethree-coats are thicker, they last longer.

XYLAN 8200Premium Three-coats for Cookware

General InformationXylan 8300 coatings are used worldwide to coat

more housewares than any other single-film coat-ing. Their use is appropriate for application to theinterior cooking surfaces of top-of-stove cookware,e.g., skillets, frying pans, sauce pans and self-heated electric appliances such as waffle irons,sandwich cookers and griddles. Among one-coats,the economy, durability, and release characteristicsof these materials are unparalleled.

The ProductsXylan 8330: contains a high percentage of PTFE inthe cured film for excellent nonstick properties, yetis extremely mar- and abrasion-resistant. Availablein dark, nonmetallic colors.

Xylan 8333: identical to 8330 coatings, but con-tains metallic pigments for improved aesthetics.Xylan 8350: represents an improvement over theoriginal formulae in terms of appearance, perform-ance, and durability. Xylan 8353: identical to Xylan 8350 coatings, butcontains metallic pigments for improved aesthetics.Xylan 8360: third generation, 8300 Series coatings.Represents a significant improvement over the orig-inal formulae in terms of wear and abrasion resist-ance. Available in dark, nonmetallic colors.Xylan 8363: identical to Xylan 8360 coatings, butcontains metallic pigments for improved aesthetics.Xylan 8391: contains no PTFE. It is used principallyas a primer when extra durability is desired, or tosmooth out rough castings prior to the applicationof the coatings described above.

XYLAN 8300 SERIESWorld’s Best One-Coats for Cookware

General InformationThe most notable characteristics of Xylan 8400

Series coatings are their relatively low curing re-quirement of 600°F (315°C) or less (see Xylan8426). Designers may now specify Xylan 8400 Se-ries coatings for aluminum castings, such as sand-wich cookers, steamers and waffle irons, knowingthat the castings will have an attractive nonstick fin-ish and will not outgas.

The ProductsXylan 8421: a low-VOC, 400°F (204°C) cure, suit-able for food processing and handling equipment,i.e., water valves, etc. Good corrosion resistance. Xylan 8426: a low-VOC, economical one-coat sys-tem suitable for electric appliances. May be curedat 525°F (273°C). Available in very attractive low-gloss, metallic colors.Xylan 8460: resin-bonded, nonstick coatings for-mulated to operate continuously to temperatures of500°F (260°C). The coating exhibits excellent resist-ance to cooking oils, dishwasher detergents, and abroad range of household and commercial chemi-cals. It is the coating of choice on cooking surfacesof aluminum castings. Xylan 8461: contains more bonding resin relativeto content of PTFE lubricant than Xylan 8460. Thisproduces finishes which are harder, more abrasion-resistant, glossier, and less porous than Xylan 8460.Used on coffee-maker warming plates, pizza pans,popcorn poppers, and fry buckets.

Xylan 8470: incorporates a dispersion grade ofPTFE which tends to stratify to the surface, yieldinga slick, waxy, nonstick surface. Recommended forhigh-release applications, e.g., molds for foodstuffssuch as cheese and chocolate, bundt pans, etc.

XYLAN 8400 SERIESLower Cure Temperature, Not Lower Quality

General InformationStriking colors, including bright white and metal-

lic finishes, and low processing temperatures 525°F(275°C), distinguish this line from others used tocoat housewares. These coatings are versatile asthey bond well to steel and aluminum and requireminimal surface preparation. The cured film isstain-resistant and unaffected by cooking oils, dish-washer detergents, and many household chemi-cals. Their visual appeal makes them naturalchoices to satisfy consumer and commercial coat-ing requirements.

The ProductsXylan 8510: an inexpensive spray coating for bake-ware. Is also available in high solids.Xylan 8514: provides low-gloss, easy-clean finishesin a broad spectrum of rich colors. Contains a rel-atively high percentage of PTFE. Professional coat-ing applicators indicate that these materials areamong the easiest and most forgiving to apply.Used to finish bakeware, medical and laboratoryequipment. The bright, white Xylan 8514/903 is fa-vored for medical equipment because it lends a“clean room” appearance to exterior surfaces.Xylan 8516: contains fillers to increase the abrasionresistance of the basic 8514 formula while maintain-ing its easy-clean characteristics. Be-cause of itstoughness, is applied to counter-top appliancehousings and restaurant equipment.Xylan 8541: formulated to provide low cure andmaximum release. Exclusively for bakeware.Xylan 8585S: formulated for good hot hardnessand scratch resistance. Contains a high tempera-ture silicone release agent. Ideal for interiors andexteriors of steel cookware.

XYLAN 8500 SERIESFood-Safe Function with a Flair

General InformationXylan 8600 Series coatings are high-tempera-

ture, decorative enamels with easy-clean additives.One of our most successful product lines, they areused to coat a countless array of cookware, bake-ware, and appliance components. Available colorsinclude earth tones, pewter, and many bright colorsfound on housewares.

The ProductsXylan 8660: contains silicone as the nonstickagent. This smooth, glossy enamel has a useful op-erating temperature to 425°F (220°C) and is tar-geted for low-end bakeware.Xylan 8666: has an attractive, medium- gloss satinfinish that makes it a good choice for exterior sur-faces of better quality cookware and counter-topappliances. The operating temperature of this fin-ish should be limited to 450°F (230°C). PTFE is theeasy-clean additive.Xylan 8666S: is the identical product with a siliconerelease agent.Xylan 8668: thermally stable to 480°F (250°C) andis the most popular finish in the line. If the cookwarein your home has an easy-clean enamel exteriorcoating, it is most likely Xylan 8668.Xylan 8668S: contains high temperature silicone asthe nonstick additive. The cured film has a smooth,mirror-like finish and operates to 480°F (250°C). Itis durable enough to be applied on the interior sur-faces of stir-fry woks. (Most are coated inside andoutside with this finish.) They may also be specifiedfor applications where the potential for hazardousfumes associated with overheated PTFE house-wares may exist (e.g., range-top drip pans, aka“burner bibs”).

XYLAN 8600 SERIESEasy-Clean, Decorative Enamels

General InformationXylan 8800 Series coatings are applied to metal

by conventional air spray or coil-coating tech-niques. They are noteworthy because of two uniqueproperties: they have arguably the best nonstickproperties of any single-coat nonstick coating; theyare extremely flexible, allowing them to be post-formed. Other attributes of these coatings includegood chemical resistance and cured films withglass-like smoothness.

The ProductsXylan 8800: formulated for application to coil stockfrom which top-of-stove cookware and small appli-ance housings are manufactured. These coatingshave a medium loading of PTFE and have excellentadhesion to aluminum and tin-free steel (TFS). Theyare then postformed into the finished shape of thecookware or appliance.Xylan 8802: a waterborne, VOC-compliant coatingspecified for spray application in several industrialmolding operations which operate to 450°F (230°C).This formula was selected because it met severalimportant criteria: a high percentage of PTFE lubri-cant for excellent nonstick and release; a coatingwhich may be flexed repeatedly with no loss of ad-hesion; resistance to many chemicals and corro-sives; and a safe, nontoxic, dry film.Xylan 8810: bonds equally well to ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Specified for spray application tostampings, extrusions, and die-cast componentsused in the manufacture of microwave and toasterovens and other kitchenware. Like 8800, Xylan 8810coatings contain a medium loading of PTFE and arealso recommended for use on top-of-stove cook-ware and bakeware.

XYLAN 8800 SERIESOne-Coat Release Finishes for Cookware

Xylan 8815: a primer for Xylan 8820. It is suitablefor use for application to aluminum, stainless-steeland TFS substrates.Xylan 8820: formulated for coil application with ahigh percentage of PTFE. Recommended for coilstock which is converted to top-of-stove cookwareand may be used in conjunction with Xylan 8815 toform a two-coat system. Spray and high releaseversions are also available.Xylan 8840: unique in the Series because they con-tain FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene) as thenonstick polymer rather than PTFE. It is well knownin the industry that FEP processed at high temper-atures produces coatings with outstanding nonstickproperties. Accordingly, Xylan 8840 has the bestnonstick properties of any Xylan coating currentlyin production.

Xylan 8840 is used to coat sealing bars andmolds. Heated sealing bars, used to weld plasticpackaging films around consumer products, arenotoriously sticky and troublesome. Xylan 8840-coated sealing bars benefit from the material’s abil-ity to repel the melted plastic while operatingcontinuously at elevated temperatures. Likewise,molds coated with Xylan 8840 are favored to pro-duce a diversity of goods because of the coating’slong-lasting release properties — especially usefulwith high-sugar recipes.Xylan 8850: a more economical coil coating forbakeware. These coatings have a medium loadingof PTFE and have excellent adhesion to aluminumand tin-free steel (TFS). It has a maximum operat-ing temperature of 400°F (204°C).

General InformationUltralon one-coat coatings are applied to metal

by conventional air spray or coil-coating tech-niques. They are super-smooth coatings which aretypically applied to top-of-stove cookware, bake-ware, and counter-top appliances such as toaster-oven shells because of their excellent nonstickproperties and ability to be postformed.

The ProductsUltralon OC-400: available in a broad range of col-ors including white and several finishes with metal-lic effects. (In the Ultralon lines, each ProductNumber denotes a specific color, e.g., OC-417 isWhite, OC-443 is Dark Gray Metallic, etc.)

ULTRALON ONE-COATSOne-Coat Release Finish for Cookware

General InformationWhitford makes a complete line of coatings for

application by roller. At the heart of the Skandia sys-tems is a unique new “grip coat” (instead of aprimer coat) that also performs as a pretreatment.It has excellent adhesion to clean aluminum and isdesigned to replace the primer used as part of tra-ditional nonstick systems currently run on roller-coating lines.

However, as part of a complete system, thegripcoat raises the level of flexibility and perform-ance.

The addition okf specific subsequent coats canprovide performance levels that cover Promotional,Opening Price Point, Moderate, Mid- and Upper-Mid-Range cookware.

General InformationSkandia Xtreme includes a new High-Release

(HR) topcoat that provides advantages not seenbefore in roller coating. Based on the patentedtechnology of the recently introduced Eterna sys-tem, nonstick performance has been raised to anew level. With the HR topcoat, advances havebeen made with gloss, eye appeal and improvedrelease.

SkandiaDurable Nonstick for Roller Coating

Skandia XtremeUses High-Release Topcoat

General InformationFusion is waterborne and totally free of any

PTFE and PFOA as are all ceramic coatings. Be-cause it is ceramic, Fusion can be taken to extremetemperatures (850°F/455°C); conventional coatingsbegin to decompose slowly at 650°F/345°C.

Most ceramic coatings involve some fairly com-plicated chemistry that makes them difficult toapply. General InformationXylac 4100 and 4400 Series Enamels are our

best resin- bonded, high-temperature enamels.They are similar in composition to the Xylan 1000Series coatings, with the exception that they con-tain no PTFE (or other) lubricant.

The ProductsXylac 4100: employed as an industrial-strengthenamel, Xylac 4100 is unaffected by most organicsolvents, resists attack by acids and bases, andhas an operating temperature range of -420° to550°F (-250° to 285°C). We know of no otherenamel with better physical, chemical, and me-chanical properties on the market today.Xylac 4400: properties are identical to the Xylac4100 Series Enamels, is a waterborne rather thana solvent-borne carrier system. The use of waterraises the flash point of the materials from approx-imately 85° to 120°F (29° to 48°C) and means loweractual (not calculated) solvent (VOC) content. General InformationXylac 4300s are a new line of solvent-borne and

waterborne decorative enamels which bond well toplastics and other temperature-sensitive sub-strates. They are available in a rainbow of bright,eye-catching metallic and nonmetallic colors.

The ProductsXylac 4311: designed as a one-pack system forthermoset plastics. Xylac 4311 has excellent de-tergent resistance.Xylac 4320: this line of finishes may be applied tothermoplastic and thermoset materials to yield fin-ishes never before possible with so economical amaterial. The coatings fully cure at temperatures of(350°F/175°C) and have low VOCs: 2.5 to 3.0pounds per gallon (300 to 360 grams per liter).Xylac 4360: decorative enamel coatings are similarto Xylac 4320, above, but are formulated for use ex-clusively on metal substrates because of highercure-temperature requirements: 400° to 450°F(205° to 230°C). These products are color stableto temperatures associated with top-of-stove cook-ing and, like the Xylac 4320 Series coatings above,are VOC-compliant.

Xylac 4600 Series coatings are also used as aneconomical backing to prevent the coil surface fromrusting and serve as a protective cushioning film toprevent the coil from marring itself during the rewindoperation and transport.

XYLAC 4510 & 4768Decorative “Hammertone” Exterior System

General InformationXylac 4510/4768 is a decorative “hammertone”

exterior system. The basecoat, Xylac 4510, is ap-plied and flashed at 300°F (150°C). The Xylac 4768topcoat is then applied. Silicones are added to thetopcoat to change its surface tension, making it in-compatible with the basecoat. As a result, it cannotwet out and so it “crawls” into itself, creating smallmounds or hills of color against the contrastingcolor of the basecoat. This coating comes in a widevariety of color combinations.

General InformationXylac 4700 Enamel is, in terms of operating

temperature, our “better” quality high-temperature,decorative enamel (see Xylac 4360 for “good” andXylac 4100 & 4400 for “best”). Following a simpledegreasing operation, Xylac 4700 bonds tena-ciously to steel, aluminum, plastics — even chrome.This coating has good gloss and can be producedin virtually any color, including earth tones, pastels,bright white, and metallics. This allows designers tomatch coated metal components to molded plasticparts on the same product. It has a maximum op-erating temperature of 500°F (260°C).

XYLAC 4700High-Temperature Enamel for Housewares

General InformationXylan 1022 has been developed to solve sev-

eral problems associated with the generation ofsteam in both travel and domestic irons. This coat-ing is waterborne and is easily applied to the inter-nal steam chamber to accelerate the generation ofsteam when needed during ironing.

Xylan 1022 is a combination of a high-temper-ature, thermoset resin for adhesion, selected pig-ments, additives, and fillers for corrosionresistance. While the product is called Xylan, itworks exactly the opposite of our traditional Xylannonstick, nonwetting coatings. Xylan 1022 causeswater to completely “wet-out” the surface of thesteam chamber. This means the water spreadsquickly and uniformly into a thin film, giving it themaximum exposure (surface area) to the heat in thesteam chamber. The thin film of water is convertedto steam more rapidly than a pool or droplet ofwater, thereby enhancing the operation of the ap-pliance.

Xylan 1022 also provides excellent corrosion re-sistance, eliminating oxidation of the steam cham-ber. This eliminates resultant stain-causing depositsfrom being sprayed onto clothing with the steam.

The colors in which Xylan 1500 is available canbe matched to the colors of existing molded parts— even white. Another desirable feature is that hairpreparations, barbecue sauce, even tap-waterscale will neither cling to nor stain Xylan 1500’sbright surface.

Excellent adhesion to steel or to aluminum sub-strates is obtained simply by degreasing the partsto be coated. Normally, grit blasting or primers arenot required.

Xylan 1500’s self-cleaning properties, resist-ance to ultra-violet rays, acid rain and its variety ofcolors, suggest its use on applications from build-ing fasteners and snow slides to radomes and I-Odrives.
