You will be able to see the exhibition at selected stops or to go for an unusual ride accompanied by museum exhibits.

The premises of the former “Katowice” Coal Mine will be soon redefined. The underground structure will hold exhibition rooms and museum collec-tions and resources; the panorama of the former coal mine facilities will be complemented by sky-scraping glass constructions that will allow sunlight into the museum interiors and will be smoothly incorporated into the his-toric landscape of this part of the city.

Exhibition illustrating the role of gardens in European culture from the aesthetic and philosophical perspective – starting from the images of the garden of Eden to gardens as special places to the explanation of the symbolic meaning of the garden and its elements. At the same time, the exhibition aims to familiarise the visitors with the phenomenon of Silesian and Polish non-professional visual arts, a characteristic but complex component of egalitarian culture encompassing, among others, naive art, intuitive art and outsider art. These are phenomena whose revival we can currently see.

This joint German-Polish project encompass-ing exhibition and publishing activities entitled Structure and architecture. Postindustrial heritage of Upper Silesia has resulted from the collaboration of the German Forum of Culture of Central and Eastern Europe (Deutsches Kulturforum östliches Europa) in Potsdam, the Europareportage initiative and the Silesian Museum in Katowice, the House of Polish-German Cooperation in Gliwice as well as numerous partners, both Polish and German.

Marian Gongor is a retired mining rescuer, born and domiciled in Ruda Śląska. He has been a fan of drawing since primary school. Although his father was an amateur painter, Marian has preferred to express himself by drawing lines, and he has never been attracted by painting. His preferred range of topics includes architectural details, parts of pavements, old manholes and hydrants – all these elements whose beauty we tend to overlook in our hectic life.

The exhibition will present copies of the most famous sculptures of the Antiquity, the classical Greek period and of the Renaissance tradition that form a universal discourse concerning European art. A separate sequence is formed by architec-tural models and volumetric models that make up a crash course in the history of architecture. The exhibition is complemented by a presentation of good practices in the area of museum education for the blind and partially sighted developed by the Tactile Museum in Ancona and the Silesian Museum in Katowice.

This is a collection of modern paintings gathered since 1984, i.e. the moment of the restitution of the Silesian Museum in Katowice. The exhibition features the most interesting artistic currents and tendencies appearing after 1945 up to the 90’s. It comprises of a period of intense searching and experimenting within the trend of substance painting versus ‘informel’, abstract geometry versus emotional, metaphor-symbolic character and the return of the figurative painting from the 80’s with varying intensity of expression and defor-mation. Presenting the works of the most eminent Polish artists after the year 1945 such as Z. Beksiński, T. Kantor, J. Nowosielski, W. Hasior, J. Duda-Gracz.

In September 2009 the Silesian Museum in Katowice opened its flagship permanent exhibition entitled The Gal-lery of Polish Paintings 1800 –1945 in a completely new ar-rangement. We can see the works of the greatest masters, such as Matejko, Malczewski, Chełmoński, Gierymscy and many others, in a new, modern projection.

THE STEREOSCOPE The Stereoscope in the Silesian Mu-seum, one of the few existing in Poland, comes from the late 19th century. It en-ables viewing stereoscopic photogra-phy, that is three-dimensional pictures. From 29 September until 2 November visitors are invited to see a show en-titled “European escapades. Travelling through Germany at the turn of the 20th century”. Between 5 November 2011 and 8 January 2012 visitors are invited to see a show entitled “Under the ground in Silesian coal mines”.
