Vestimenta: Debido a lo acentuada que es la os-cilación térmica, es necesario traer vestimenta de verano para el día (poleras de algodón, traje de baño, short y pantalones delgados) y vesti-menta de invierno para la noche (po-lar, pantalones, corta viento, parka, gorro), bototos y zapatillas.
Elementos básicos: Lentes de sol, protector solar, crema hidratante para el cuerpo, sombre-ro, parka, linterna y binoculares.
Altura y “mal de puna”:No realizar ejercicios hasta que el cuerpo se adapte. Si tienes hiper-tensión no subas sobre los 4000 m.s.n.m.
Agua: Es recomendable mantener el cuer-po hidratado, debido a la sequedad del aire. Es recomendable beber sólo agua envasada, que se vende en lo-cales comerciales. Lleva una botella de agua a todos los tours que reali-ces.
Comercio: Horario minimarket, locales comer-ciales y oficinas municipales: desde las 9:00 a 14:00 hrs. y de 17:00 a 22:00 horas. Horario restaurantes y agencias de viajes: 8:00 a 24:00 hrs.
Propinas: Se acostumbra dejar un 10% de pro-pina sobre el valor total de la cuenta, en cafés, restaurantes y bares. Ma-leteros, guías turísticos y presta-dores de servicios también esperan propina.
Clothing: Due to the marked thermal fluctua-tion, it is necessary to bring summer clothing to wear during the day (co-tton sports shirts or T-Shirts, bathing suit, shorts and thin fabric pants), as well as winter clothing to wear at night (polar flees, pants, feather parka or coat, and hat). Bring boots and walking shoes.
Basic elements: Sunglasses, high-level sun protection lotion, hydrating body cream, hat, parka, flashlight, and binoculars
Altitude Sickness: Do not exercise until the body has adapted. If you suffer from hyperten-sion, you must not climb higher than 4,000 meters above sea level.
Water: It is advisable to maintain your body hydrated due to the dryness in the air. We recommend that you only drink bottled water that can be purchased in the local stores. When you go on a tour, be sure to take some bottled water with you.
Commerce: Business hours for minimarket, shops and the council office are between 9:00 to 14:00hrs and from 17:00 a 22:00hrs business hours for the res-taurant and travel agencies are from 8:00 a 24:00hrs.
Tips: In cafes, restaurants and bars, you should leave a tip of 10% of the total value of your bill. Luggage carriers, tourist guides and servicemen also expect tips.

Existen diversas formas para llegar a San Pedro de Atacama, a continuación se recomendará to-das las alternativas.
Líneas aéreas: Al aeropuerto el Loa de Calama lle-ga Lan Chile, Pal airline y Sky Airline; encuentra información más detallada en la Guía de Servi-cios.
Transfer desde el aeropuerto: Te llevará en forma directa a San Pedro de Atacama. Para los vuelos de las 7:30 am existen tarifas especiales, reserva con anticipación (información en Guía de servi-cios).
Buses interurbanos: Tur Bus realiza viajes des-de Santiago directo a San Pedro de Atacama, o desde cualquier ciudad a Calama. Desde Calama, Tur Bus, Atacama 2000 y Frontera realizan este viaje. Desde Salta-Argentina, Géminis y Pullman Bus son las empresas que llegan en forma directa a San Pedro de Atacama. El viaje dura alrededor de nueve horas.
Desde Bolivia no existe transporte comercial di-recto a San Pedro de Atacama, sólo existen em-presas de turismo o agencias de viajes.
En vehículo: Sólo hay bombas de bencina en Ca-lama y en San Pedro de Atacama. Si viene desde Argentina los pasos fronterizos están abiertos desde las 8:00 a las 23:00 hrs, dependiendo de las condiciones climáticas. Infórmate en carabi-neros por estado de caminos.
There are different ways to get to San Pedro de Atacama that meet your comfort and budget needs.
The airlines that fly to Calama are Lan Chile, Air-comet and Sky Airline. For further details look at the directory.
If you decide to come by plane, you can take a shuttle from the airport which will take you di-rectly to San Pedro de Atacama. For the 7:30am flight there’s a special rate. We recommend you call and make your reservation in advance.
If you come by bus, Tur Bus offers a direct route to San Pedro de Atacama. From Calama you can take a bus from Frontera or Geminis. From Argen-tina, Geminis and Pullman Bus are the companies that go directly to San Pedro de Atacama. The trip takes around nine hours.
There are no commercial direct transportation services from Bolivia to San Pedro de Atacama. Tourist companies and agencies are the only ones to offer this service.
If you travel by car, you must keep in mind that the distance between one gas station and another one is considerable since they can only be found in Calama and in San Pedro de Atacama. If you are coming from Argentina the border passages are open from 8:00 A.M. to 11 P.M, depending on the weather conditions. Find out with the road patrol before departure.

San Pedro de Atacama está ubicado en la II Re-gión de Chile, en el desierto más árido del mundo, el desierto de Atacama. La capital arqueológica de Chile, se encuentra específicamente en la de-presión pre-altiplánica a 2.438 m.s.n.m., en la desembocadura del río San Pedro (el mayor río que llega al salar de Atacama). Esta cuenca limita al oeste con la Cordillera de Domeyko y al este con la cordillera pre-altiplánica de los Andes o Puna de Atacama.
San Pedro de Atacama is located in the 2nd Re-gion of Chile, the most arid desert in the world, the Atacama Desert. The archeological capital of Chi-le is located at the base of the High Lands, at the basin of the San Pedro River (the biggest river to reach the Atacama Salt Flats). This basin borders the Domeyko Mountain Range to the west and the high plateau or Altiplano of the Andes Mountain Range or the Puna de Atacama to the east.

Este hermoso poblado debe su nombre al Santo Patrono San Pedro, y la palabra Atacama, según cuentan sus ancestros, proviene del idioma Cunza ¨Accatchca¨ que significa Cabecera del país, esta palabra con el tiempo fue sufriendo modificacio-nes hasta llegar a la pronunciación de hoy. San Pedro de Atacama fue conquistada por los incas en 1450 y luego por los españoles en 1540, cons-tituyéndose el cabildo en 1555.
La plaza es sin duda uno de los atractivos de La Capital arqueológica de Chile, nada mejor que ver el tiempo pasar bajo sus enormes pimientos o molles, árboles que te re-frescarán en las tardes de verano.
A un costado de la plaza en-contramos la Iglesia de San Pedro de Atacama, sin duda una de las más hermosas del norte de Chile, no se conoce su fecha de construcción, sin embargo ya funcionaba como parroquia en 1641; en 1951 fue declarada Monumento Nacional. Para su construcción se utilizó adobe en sus paredes y madera de Chañar y algarrobo, paja y barro en sus techos, los cuales fueron revestidos con madera de cactus.
Frente a la plaza encontraremos la Municipalidad de San Pedro de Atacama, carabineros, el correo, el Museo de Padre le Paige (descrito en la sección Tour arqueológico) y la oficina de Información tu-rística (SERNATUR).
This beautiful town is named after its patron saint San Pedro (Saint Peter), and the word Atacama, which, according to the ancestors comes from “Accatchca” in the Cunza language and means Head of the Country. Over time, this term under-went many modifications until it arrived at today’s pronunciation. It was conquered by the Incas in 1450 and then by the Spaniards in 1540 becoming a cabildo (a Chilean government seat) in 1555.
The town square is without a doubt one of the main attractions of Chile’s archeological capital. There is nothing better than to watch time go by under
its enormous pepper or molle trees which will cool you off in the summer evenings. On one side of the square you will find the San Pedro de Atacama Church; undoubt-edly one of the most beauti-ful churches of the north of Chile. Its construction date is unknown, however, it served
as a parish in 1641 and in 1951 it was declared a National Monument. The walls are made of adobe and the ceilings are made of Chañar tree (Geof-froea decorticans), locust tree, and clay, which were later covered with cactus wood.
Across from the square you will find the Munici-pality of San Pedro of Atacama, the police station, the post office, the Padre le Paige Museum (de-scribed in the Archeological Tour section) and the tourist information office (SERNATUR).

El casco histórico todavía conserva la estructura y construcción de la influencia de la colonia es-pañola, antiguas casas pareadas con patios inte-riores, construidas en adobe con techos de paja y barro.
Sus calles de tierra hoy han sido tratadas con vi-chufita, un producto derivado del salar que per-mite conservar la estética original, ocasionando menor polución. Su calle principal “Caracoles” debe su nombre a que antiguamente desde este punto partían grupos de mineros a trabajar en la Mina de Plata Caracoles, descubierta en 1870 por Diaz Gana.
Hoy en día, esta calle peatonal está provista de restaurantes, agencias de turismo y almacenes que dan la bienvenida a turistas de todo el mundo.
Downtown San Pedro still preserves the structure and construction of the Spanish colonial influen-ce, antique adobe houses with interior yards, and roofs made of clay and hay.
Today’s dirt streets have been treated with vi-chufita, a product derived from salt, which allows them to retain the original look causing less po-llution.
The main street is Caracoles, so named because in earlier days miners left from here to work in the Caracoles silver mine discovered in 1870 by Diaz Gana.
Now a days you can find nice restaurants, tourist agencies and stores, which welcome tourists from all over the world.

San Pedro de Atacama cuenta con una gran di-versidad de propuestas a la hora de almorzar, ce-nar o simplemente tomarse un café leyendo un libro o escribiendo postales.
Hay restaurantes que destacan por sus elabora-dos platos, mezclando recetas altiplánicas con recetas internacionales. En su mayoría cuentan con una propuesta carnívora y otra vegetariana.
El horario comienza a las 8:00 am ofreciendo exquisitas opciones de desayuno, funcionan en horario continuado hasta las 24:00 hrs.
There are many eating options in San Pedro de Atacama for lunch, dinner or simply for a cup of coffee as you read a book or write a postcard.
There are fine cuisine restaurants that combine the high lands recipes with international ones. Most restaurants offer vegetarian and meat dis-hes on their menu.
Service begins at 8:00 A.M. with a breakfast menu and continues throughout the day with lunch and dinner service until midnight.

La minería del Salitre o del Nitrato -fertilizante natural y materia prima para la fabricación de pólvora- marcó profundamente la historia de Chile. Tanto así que la Guerra del Pacífico o del Salitre (1879-1883) entre Bolivia, Perú y Chile marcó un antes y un después en los límites de Atacama.Cercanas a San Pedro se encuentran Oficinas Sa-litreras y vestigios de la gloriosa época del “oro blanco”. Chacabuco, ubicada entre Calama y Antofagasta, fue declarada Monumento Histórico Nacional en 1971. Dispone de señalética para una visita guia-da y en su Teatro hay una exposición. María Elena, localizada a 180 km. de San Pedro, fue inaugurada en 1926 y es en la actualidad la última Oficina Salitrera completa en funciona-miento. Cuenta con un “Museo del Salitre”.A 30 km. de ella se sitúa Pedro de Valdivia,. Esta Oficina cerró su campamento en 1996 perma-neciendo activa su planta industrial. Es posible recorrer su campamento, declarado Monumento Nacional en 1996.
Mining of saltpeter or nitrate – natural fertilizer and raw material for the fabrication of powder – deeply marked the history of Chile. So much so that the War of the Pacific or of Nitrate (1879-1883) between Bolivia-Peru and Chile marked a before and after in the limits of Atacama.There are saltpeter minings and vestiges of the glorious epoch of the “white gold” near San Pe-dro.Chacabuco, located between Calama and Anto-fagasta, was declared National Historical Monu-ment in 1971. It is properly signalized for a guided visit and there is an exposition in its Theater Maria Elena, located 180 km. from San Pedro, was inaugurated in 1926 and is at present the last ni-trate Company that is in full operation. It has a “Nitrate Museum”.At a distance of 30 km. lies Pedro de Valdivia. This Oficina closed its camp in 1996 but its industrial plant remained active. It is possible to run through its camp, that was declared National Monument in 1996.

Ubicado a 4 Km. de San Pedro de Atacama, su origen geológico es un lago emergido, donde las antiguas capas horizontales de sedimento y roca, que datan de unos 23 millones de años, fueron empujadas y plegadas por los movimientos de la corteza terrestre que levantaron la Cordillera de los Andes, quedando algunas capas en posición vertical.
La Cordillera de la Sal ha sido moldeada a tra-vés del tiempo por la lluvia y el viento, surgiendo así, impresionantes formas y brillos minerales, compuestos por cerros de sal, yeso y arcilla, es-pectaculares esculturas naturales y variadas co-loraciones producto de minerales que conforman este atractivo.
VALLEY OF THE DEATH
Located 4 kilometers west of San Pedro de Ata-cama; you can observe a geological phenomenon of enormous mineral sculptures formed by the wind and rain. Its geological origin comes from an emerged lake, where the old (ancient) horizontal layers of sediment and rock, dating back around 23 million years, were pushed and folded by the movement of the Earth’s crust, lifting the Andes Mountain Range, and leaving some layers in a vertical position. The Atacama Salt Plains have been shaped throughout time by the rain and the wind, giving rise to enormous shapes and mineral brilliance made up of salt hills, gypsum and clay, spectacular natural sculptures of various colors as a result of the minerals that form part of this natural attraction.

VALLE DE LA LUNA
Ubicado a 19 Km. de San Pedro de Atacama, de-clarado santuario de la Naturaleza, está formado por una depresión rodeada de pequeños cerros con impresionantes crestas filosas modeladas por el viento, como Las Tres Marías y el Anfiteatro.
Este valle es hermoso por su conformación pare-cida al valle lunar, se encuentra en plena Cordi-llera de la Sal y en el borde del Salar de Atacama. Es un sorprendente espectáculo geológico de gran belleza ubicado a 2.550 m.s.n.m, formado hace 22 millones de años, cuando se originaron formaciones y pliegues de capas de sedimentos horizontales de un antiguo salar, que convergie-ron en forma horizontal debido a constantes mo-vimientos y plegamientos de la corteza terrestre. Sobre estos pliegues se depositó fracciones de rocas y cenizas debido a la actividad volcánica de antaño. Hoy en día está constituido por rocas sedimentarias con intercalaciones de sal, yeso, clorato, borato y arcilla que afloran.
El viento y la acción de otros agentes atmosféri-cos han tallado formas escultóricas con crestas filosas, montículos y hondonadas que lo transfor-man en un paisaje extraordinario, único en nues-tro país. La ausencia de vida animal y vegetal, la falta de humedad, lo hacen ser el rincón más inhóspito de la tierra.
MOON VALLEY
This site, located 19 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama, was declared a Nature Sanctuary. Its landscape resembles the surface of the moon with small but sharp crested hills formed by the wind, such as the three Maria’s and the amphitheater.
Located on the Salt Mountain Range bordering the Atacama Salt Flats; this beautiful valley resem-bles the surface of the moon. This geological site situated at 2,550 meters above sea level, formed 22 million years ago when the folding of the upper strata of the earth’s crust began to take place. The volcanic activity of the time deposited bits of rock and ash on these folds. Today it is made up of se-dimentary rocks with fragments of salt, gypsum, chlorate, borate, and clay.
The wind and the atmospheric conditions have carved sculptured shapes with sharp crests, hi-lltops and waves that transform the landscape into the most extraordinary of our country. The absence of animal and vegetable life as well as the lack of humidity, make this the most inhospitable corner on Earth.

El salar de Tara, perteneciente a la Reserva Na-cional Los Flamencos, se encuentra a 100 Km. de San Pedro de Atacama a una altitud de 4.300 metros. Inmerso en medio de volcanes donde se desarrollan vegas, ríos y lagunas, en la que es común ver pastoreo de llamas de familias ataca-meñas.
En este sector se encuentran estructuras volcáni-cas y planos ondulados, existiendo declives pro-ducidos por la erosión al este del salar. Permite observación de formas modeladas por el viento de gran belleza, como son los Monjes de la Pa-cana, enormes pilares de piedra que se elevan verticales y solitarios sobre la arena del desier-to, o bien el Farallón de Tara, una gran pared de rocas talladas por el viento. Siguiendo el camino se desvía a la Laguna de Tara que se encuentra en el mismo salar. Tiene una superficie de 3 a 25 km², dependiendo de la época del año. Su princi-pal alimentación es el río Zapaleri, río que nace en Bolivia. La laguna ayuda a sostener la vida de la flora y fauna del lugar. No dejes de visitar las catedrales de Tara, enormes esculturas de piedra erosionada que asemejan un gran castillo.
The Flamenco National Reserve is 100 kilome-ters from San Pedro de Atacama, at 4,300 meters above sea level. With a surface of 48 km2, it lies between fertile plains, rivers and lagoons, where it is common to see Altiplano families shepherd-ing llamas.
Here you can find volcanic structures and wavy plains, and to the east of the salt flats you can see the slopes caused by erosion. The Pacana Guard-ians are a collection of huge beautiful weathered rock pillars of different shapes. They stand out beautifully on the desert’s sand. You can also en-joy the splendor of the Farallón de Tara, a great stonewall carved and shaped by the wind. As you continue on the salt flats’ path, you reach the Tara Lagoon that forms part of the Flamenco National Reserve. It lies on a surface area of 3 to 25 km², depending on the time of year. It feeds from the Zapaleri River that runs 20 kilometers from Bo-livia, ending its flow on the eastern side of the la-goon. The lagoon helps keep the flora and fauna of the area alive. Be sure to visit the Tara cathedrals; huge weathered stone sculptures that resemble a large castle.

HIERBAS BUENAS
Ubicado a 68 Kms de San Pedro de Atacama, y a 23 kms del desvío hacia Río Grande, este lugar en épocas prehispánicas era utilizado por los anti-guos caravaneros como lugar de descanso en sus expediciones en busca de intercambio de bienes. Los atacameños tallaban en las piedras mensajes para los grupos de viajeros, dentro de los dibujos destacan formas shamanicas y animales princi-palmente llamas, zorros y parinas.
VALLE DEL ARCOÍRIS
Siguiendo por la ruta y tomando el desvío hacia Matancilla, en el km. 3,2 a mano izquierda se pue-de entrar al Valle del Arcoíris, una zona de cerros de múltiples colores. Aquí encontrarás formacio-nes ocres, verdes, con tintes negros, violáceas, cafés, un sinfín de colores para deleitar la vista.
HIERBAS BUENAS
Located 68 km (42 miles) from San Pedro de Ata-cama and 23 km (14.3 miles) from the deviation towards Rio Grande. This place was used in pre-Hispanic times by the ancient caravan travelers as a place to rest on their expeditions in search for exchange of goods. The people of Atacama would carve messages on the stones for the travelers. In the carvings we can find shamanic forms as well as animals, mainly llamas, foxes and flamingoes.
RAINBOW VALLEY
Following the route and taking the deviation to-wards Matancilla, at km 3.2 (mile 1.98) to the left you will find the Rainbow Valley, an area surrounded by mountains and multi-colored rock formations. Here you will find mountains in ochres, greens, blacks, purples, browns, and end-less shades of colors to feast your eyes on.

RÍO GRANDE
En la cuenca del Río Grande, a 90 kms de San Pedro de Atacama, en dirección a Calama, este poblado con alrededor de 96 habitantes, tenía una ubicación estratégica como paso obligado de las caravanas que se desplazaban entre San Pedro de Atacama y Chiu-Chiu. Lo que se puede constatar gracias a los sitios arqueológicos de su entorno, principalmente petroglifos de cazadores de guanacos en tiempos prehispánicos.
Hoy en día, sus pobladores se dedican al cultivo de maíz, lechugas, alfalfa, papas entre otros y tam-bién a la crianza de ovejas, llamas, aves, conejos y cabras, los cuales son comercializados en su gran mayoría en Calama. También existe la elabora-ción de tejidos y artesanía en menor grado.
La construcción de Río Grande, se caracteriza por el uso de de piedras canteadas en sus muros, uni-das con argamasa de barro, techos de paja y barro con vigas de madera de cactus y algarrobo.
RÍO GRANDE
In the basin of the “big river”, 90 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama, towards Calama, lies this village with a population of around 96 inhabi-tants. Its location was strategic, as it was the for-ced passageway for caravans traveling between San Pedro de Atacama and Chiu-Chiu. Evidence of this is the surrounding archeological sites that show petroglyphs of the guanaco hunters during the pre-Hispanic period. Today, Rio Grande’s settlers cultivate corn, lettu-ce, alfalfa, potatoes, as well as raise sheep, llamas, birds, rabbits, and goats, which are marketed in Calama. They also manufacture textile and hand-made goods on a lower scale. Construction in Rio Grande is characterized by the use of quarry stone on the walls joined together by mortar clay, straw and clay roofs with cactus and carob beams.

GEYSERS DEL TATIO
Ubicados en la cordillera andina, se encuentran a 99 Km de San Pedro de Atacama, a 4.320 m.s.n.m. El vapor de agua sale a la superficie a través de fisuras en la corteza terrestre, alcanzando una temperatura de 85ºC. Al amanecer, con tempe-raturas bajo cero, se puede apreciar un espectá-culo impresionante y maravilloso, generado por los violentos flujos de vapor que se elevan hasta 10 metros de altura. Este campo geotérmico está formado por 40 geysers, 60 termas y 70 fumaro-las en una extensión de 3 Km2.
En el año 1960 CORFO inició un proyecto para utilizar esta energía geotérmica para generar electricidad, sin embargo no se obtuvieron re-sultados que aseguraran rentabilidad económica, quedando sólo el campamento que aún esta in-tacto para recibir a científicos y turistas.

THE TATIO GEYSERS
Located in the Andean mountain range, 99 kilo-meters from San Pedro de Atacama, is 4,320 me-ters above sea level. The vapor surfaces through fissures in the earth’s crust, reaching a tempera-ture of 85° C. At dawn, with temperatures below zero, you can witness an extraordinary and ama-zing sight, generated by violent flows of vapor that reach a height of up to 10 meters. The geothermic field is made up of 40 geysers, 60 hot springs, and 70 “fumarolas” that extend over 3 kms2
In 1960, CORFO started a project to use this geo-thermic energy to generate electricity, but the re-sults did not guarantee financial profit. The only thing left from this venture is the base that still remains intact and receives visits from scientists as well as tourists.

emigración de las familias a pueblos aledaños, situación que se ha revertido lentamente gracias a diversos proyectos de la Municipalidad de San Pedro de Atacama, logrando el retorno de algunas familias, reactivando de esta forma las activida-des agrícolas, pastoriles, producción de queso y turismo. Podrás degustar ricas empanadas fritas y anticuchos de Llama. Machuca tiene un peque-ño y hermoso bofedal donde conviven pequeñas familias de flamencos, patos y gaviotas.
HOT SPRINGS
After visiting the geysers you will be able to enjoy a natural hot spring, there are no facilities there.
MACHUCAMachuca lies northeast of San Pedro de Atacama, located at an altitude of more than 4,000 meters. Most of its population migrated to nearby villa-ges leaving it practically uninhabited. Fortuna-
tely, several municipal projects of San Pedro de Atacama have slowly brought back some of the population, thus improving Machucas situation with the revival of agricultural activities, she-pherding, cheese production, and tourism. Ma-chuca has a small and beautiful wetland where small families of flamingoes, ducks and seagulls live together. You can also see the llamas that be-long to the inhabitants.

ALDEA TULOR
Ubicada a 10 Km. de San Pedro de Atacama, accediendo por el camino que conduce al Valle de la Luna, esta aldea precolombina es un cla-ro ejemplo de cómo surgió la vida sedentaria en esta zona. La visita puede ser en forma particular o a través de excursiones que salen desde San Pedro de Atacama. La aldea de Tulor tiene una antigüedad de alrededor de 3.000 años. En su época fue habitada por 150 a 200 habitantes aproximadamente, dedicados principalmente a la cerámica, tejido, agricultura y ganadería. La arquitectura estaba dada por construcciones de barro en forma circular, estas viviendas estaban adosadas unas con otras y se intercomunicaban a través de patios y pasadizos. Los recintos, cuyos cimientos se asentaron sobre canaletas previa-mente excavadas, fueron construidos con adobe, adquiriendo una forma abovedada que puede al-canzar cerca de 2 metros de alto y que remata en un techo cónico.
Esta aldea fue sepultada por la arena y hoy se encuentra un museo en este sitio, reproduciendo las viviendas originales con los mismos elementos de antaño. Existe un mirador con recorridos que permiten observar desde lo alto la formación de la aldea.
TULOR VILLAGE
Located 10 kilometeres from San Pedro de Ata-cama, on the route to the Moon Valley. This pre-colombian village is an example of the sedentary lifestyle of the region. You may visit the area on your own or take an excursion leaving from San Pe-dro de Atacama. This small village is around 3,000 years old. It had a population of approximately 150 to 200 inhabitants during that period. Their main activities were ceramics, textile, agriculture, and livestock farming. The architecture of the time had circular clay buildings, joined together by patios and passageways that communicated with one another. The rooms, whose foundations were set up on previously excavated grooves, were made us-ing adobe in an arched form that reached a height of almost 2 meters, and finished off in a conical roof mounted on wooden poles.
The sand buried this village and today on this loca-tion you can find a museum that has reproduced the original homes with the same elements of the period. There is a viewpoint that allows you to see the formation of the village from above.

PUCARÁ DE QUITOR
Esta impresionante edificación que data del siglo XII, está formado por volúmenes construidos con grandes piedras alternadas con más pequeñas, unidas con argamasa de tierra. Para su edifica-ción se utilizaron técnicas de aterrazamiento y contención, se puede observar alrededor de 200 estructuras unas más grandes que otras. Toma su nombre de la agrupación agraria prehispánica “Ayllu de Quitor”, cuyos campos de cultivo nacen al pie del pucará y eran regados por el río San Pedro. Su ubicación y estructura se debe princi-palmente a un carácter defensivo y estratégico y como ruta de tráfico ancestral ocupada poste-riormente en los tiempos incaicos.
En 1540 fue invadido por los españoles, monta-dos a caballo y con armas de fuego; los nativos no conocían ni los caballos, ni los yelmos metá-licos, ni las armas de fuego, lo que contribuyó a que los españoles tomaran posesión del lugar y los nativos a rendirse. Todos los caciques fueron decapitados. El Pucará fue restaurado en 1981 y declarado Monumento Nacional en 1982.
PUCARÁ DE QUITOR
This impressive construction dates back to the XII century, and is made up of blocks built with large rocks alternating with smaller ones, and joined with mud (mortar). Terracing and retaining wall techniques were used in its construction and around 200 structures can be seen, some larger than others. Its name comes from a pre-Hispanic agricultural group “Ayllu de Quitor”, whose farm-ing fields start at the base of the Pucará and re-ceived water by the San Pedro River. Its location and structure was mainly for defensive and stra-tegic purposes, and as an ancient route that would later be occupied in the Inca period.
The Spaniards who rode horses and carried guns invaded it in 1540. The natives had never seen horses, metal helmets or guns, which made it easy for the Spaniards to conquer them. All the native chiefs (caciques) were beheaded. The Pucará de Quitor was restored in 1981 and was declared a National Monument in 1982.

Lleva el nombre del fundador, un jesuita que en el año 1955 llega a hacerse cargo de la Parroquia de San Pedro de Atacama. Este hombre realizó un estudio arqueológico en profundidad recolectan-do diversos objetos indígenas.
En 1958 recibe el apoyo de la Universidad Cató-lica del Norte, la cual se ha encargado hasta el día de hoy de la conservación y la continua in-vestigación, después de la muerte del padre Le Paige. Hoy en día se puede ver una muestra de la evolución que experimentaron los pueblos ataca-meños y como fueron influenciados por la cultura de Tiawanaku, Inca y española. Con una cantidad superior a 380.000 ejemplares arqueológicos se destacan cerámicas, vestimentas, metales pre-ciosos, tejidos y grabados.
FATHER LE PAIGE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
This museum has been named after its founder, a Jesuit who arrived in 1955 to take over the parish in San Pedro de Atacama. This man performed an in-depth archaeological study collecting diverse indigenous objects.
In 1958 he received the support from the Nor-th Catholic University (Universidad Católica del norte). After the death of father Le Paige, this uni-versity has remained in charge of the conserva-tion of these objects as well as of the continuous investigation. You can currently see a sample of how the Atacaman villages evolved and how the Tiawanaku, Inca, and Spanish cultures influenced them. This sample holds over 380,000 archaeolo-gical specimens that include ceramics, clothing, precious metals, textiles, and engravings.

Este pueblo se encuentra a 38 Km. de San Pedro de Atacama y a 2.475 m.s.n.m. Es un oasis, cu-yas aguas son dulces, sin arsénicos, que permiten el cultivo de toda clase de frutales como peras de pascua, ciruelas, membrillos y uva, también producen una gran cantidad de hortalizas. Este pueblo de origen prehispánico y perte-neciente a la munici-palidad de San Pedro de Atacama, tiene una interesante ar-quitectura en piedra liparita local, piedra volcánica blanda y blanca, extraída de una cantera a 2 Km. Otro punto de atrac-ción turística es la quebrada de Jere, ubicada a los pies de la cantera, es un largo cajón de piedra rodeado de vegetación, por donde corre el agua libremente.
SECTOR SONCOR Y LAGUNA CHAXA
Ubicado en el sector oriente del Salar de Ataca-ma, a 62 Km. de San Pedro de Atacama y a 2.300 m.s.n.m. Soncor es un sistema de lagunas y vegas. En la superficie del Salar de Atacama se puede observar costras de sal generada por la acumu-lación de cristales producidos por la evaporación de aguas salinas subterráneas.

This village is found 38 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama and at 2,475 meters above sea level. It is an oasis, whose sweet waters, free of arsenic, allow for the cultivation of a variety of fruit trees such as pears, plums, quince, and grapes as well
as a large amount of vegetables. This pre-Hispanic settlement has an interesting architecture in local liparita stone, which is a soft white vol-canic stone, extrac-ted from a quarry 2 kilometers up the local street. Another tourist attraction site is the Jere Canyon, located at the base
of the quarry. It is a large canyon surrounded by vegetation with free flowing water.
SONCOR SECTOR AND CHAXA LAGOON
Located to the east of the Atacama Salt Flats, 62 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama and 2,300 meters above sea level, Soncor is a system of lago-ons and wetlands. On the surface of the Atacama Salt Flats you can observe salt crusts generated by the accumulation of crystals produced by the eva-poration of the underground saline waters.

También se puede encontrar lagunas fangosas de poca profundidad, donde destaca la Laguna Chaxa, hermosa laguna donde podrás ver parinas o flamencos a demás de otro tipo de aves como el Chorlo de la Puna, playero de Baird, y la gaviota andina. Estas aves son ali-
mentadas por formas microscópicas como algas unicelulares y micro invertebrados.

Ubicado a 100 Km. de San Pedro de Atacama y perteneciente a esta municipalidad, es el último pueblo atacameño que despide a los turistas que cruzan a Salta-Argentina por el paso Sico. So-caire antiguamente fue importante por sus minas de oro las que estaban cerca de la frontera. Hoy en día se caracteriza por su cocina típica ataca-meña. Este poblado tiene alrededor de 380 habi-tantes, los cuales se dedican principalmente a la agricultura y a la minería no metálica.

In this sector you can find chloride crusts of up to 70 cms. high. These are also transition crusts in the shape of polygons whereas the sulfate crusts are smooth. In this area you can also find muddy lagoons that are not very deep. One of which is the beautiful Chaxa Lagoon where you can find pari-nas and flamingoes along with other types of birds such as the “Chorlo de Puna”, “Playero de Baird”, and the Andean seagull among others. These birds
feed on microscopic forms such as one-celled al-gae and micro invertebrates.
SOCAIRE
Located 100 kilometers from San Pedro de Ataca-ma, this is the last village the tourists encounter as they cross over to Salta-Argentina through the Sico Pass. In the past, Socaire was an important village for its gold mines located near the border. Today, it is known for its typical Atacaman cuisi-ne. Socaire has a population of about 380 people, whose main source of work is agricultural and non-metal mining.

LAGUNAS MISCANTI Y MEÑIQUES
Este hermoso paisaje se encuentra ubicado a 110 Km. de San Pedro de Atacama y a 4.000 m.s.n.m. La belleza del lugar está dada por dos hermosas lagunas rodeadas de altas cumbres, con una vista espectacular hacia el Salar de Atacama, es uno de los circuitos que el turista no debe dejar de visitar.
Este sector forma parte de la Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos, y está administrada por la comunidad indígena de Socaire. Antiguamente, el paisaje del sector era diferente, las aguas provenientes de deshielos de los volcanes Miscanti y Meñiques escurrían libremente llegando al Salar de Ataca-ma, sin embargo, debido a la erupción del volcán Meñiques ocurrida hace 1 millón de años, originó el estancamiento de las aguas, dando paso a la creación de estas dos lagunas de aguas de inten-so color azul y orillas blancas. Aquí se encuentran sitios arqueológicos dados por fragmentos de cerámicas, puntas de flecha y 40 construcciones circulares de piedra, lo que demuestra la ocupa-ción de este lugar hace 4.000 - 3.000 años A.C. La avifauna está compuesta principalmente por la Tagua cornuda, especie en peligro de extinción, que nidifica aquí en invierno.
MISCANTI AND MEÑIQUES LAGOONS
This beautiful landscape is located 110 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama and at 4,000 meters above sea level. This lovely landscape shows two beautiful lagoons surrounded by high summits with a spectacular view towards the Atacama Salt Flats; a must see sight for tourists visiting this area. This area forms part of the Flamenco National Reserve, and the native community of Socaire manages it. The landscape was different in the past with the thawing waters from the Miscanti and Meñiques volcanoes running freely down to the Atacama Salt Flats. However, the eruption of the Meñiques Volcano 1 million years ago resulted in the stagnation of water thus forming these two intense blue water lagoons surrounded by white banks. Several archeological sites are found in this area containing ceramic fragments, arrow heads, and 40 circular stone constructions that stand as proof of an existing population around 3,000 - 4,000 B.C. The Wari and the Horned Coot (Tagua Cornuda), a species in danger of extinc-tion, mainly make up the bird fauna. These birds nest in this area during the winter season.

The Cejas Lagoon is the first of the two. The color of its water is a deep emerald green, and on its banks you see deposits of white salt crystals. Swimming is allowed in this lagoon where the gravitational effect from the condensation of salt allows the body to float easily and relax. You should not walk barefooted because on the banks there are very
sharp salt crests that cut through the skin. Water is needed to be taken on this tour in order to rinse the salt off after bathing. Following this road you will find the Tebinquiche
Springs, small freshwater springs with a very deep bottom. Then you arrive to the Tebinquiche Lago-on, which has similar characteristics to the Chaxa Lagoon; its water depends on the thaw and seaso-nal rainfall. Here you will find small amounts of flamingoes, foxes and bird species. This lagoon is prominent for its salt crust, white as snow, strong and resistant, surrounded by vast pastures and wetlands.
La primera laguna que se accede es la Laguna Cejas, es de un intenso color esmeralda, con bor-des cristalizados por la sal, es posible bañarse y disfrutar del efecto gravitatorio producido por la cantidad de sal condensada, el cuerpo flota fá-cilmente lo que produce un gran relajo. Es acon-sejable no andar descalzo debido a que la orilla tiene crestas de sal muy filosas las que cortan fácilmente la piel, tam-bién es necesario llevar bidones de agua para sacar la sal del cuerpo después del baño. Con-tinuando por este camino se encuentran los ojos de Tebinquiche, pequeños pozones de agua dulce con un profundo fondo, luego se accede a la lagu-na Tebinquiche, la cual tiene características simi-lares a la laguna Chaxa, sus aguas dependen de los deshielos y de las lluvias del año. Aquí se puede ver algunos flamencos, zorros y variedades de pá-jaros en pequeña cantidad. Esta laguna se destaca por tener una costra de sal dura y resistente tan blanca como la nieve y encontrarse rodeada por grandes pastizales y bofedales.

Ubicadas en el sector norte del Salar de Atacama, a 30 Km. de San Pedro de Atacama. Se accede por un camino de arenales, muy dificultoso debido a la cantidad de caminos que lo cruzan, es por esta razón que es recomendable ir guiado para no equivocarse de camino.

The greatest and highest summits in the country can be found in the Andes Mountain Range with breathtaking views. That is why tourists who like high peaks come here to climb these mountains and volcanoes. The most important ones are: Li-cancabur, Sairecabur, Llullaillaco (the three at the international border), Lascar, Paniri, Línzor, and Putana. It is important to realize that these volcanoes stand at 5,500 meters above sea level, therefore it is fundamental to spend a few days adapting to the altitude. It is also important to know that rain and snow occur during the summer months, between January and March. These hikes should be done under de supervision of experien-ced agencies.
El cordón montañoso de los Andes, presenta en este destino las cumbres más altas del país. Por ello los turistas que gustan de las altas cumbres, realizan ascensos a cerros y volcanes enmarcados en paisajes sobrecogedores. Se destacan entre otros, Licancabur, Sairecabur, Llullaillaco (los tres en el límite internacional), Lascar, Paniri, Línzor, Putana. Es importante considerar que estos vol-canes superan los 5.500 m.s.n.m. por lo tanto es fundamental tomarse días para aclimatarse a la altura. San Pedro de Atacama ofrece una variada gama de circuitos de caminatas por el día, disfrutando de impresionantes paisajes a 2.500 m.s.n.m. de altura en la zona cercana a la Cordillera de la Sal y a 4.500 m.s.n.m. en el altiplano chileno, con vista a hermosas cumbres de más de 5.000 m.s.n.m.
Existe la posibilidad de realizarlos acompaña-dos de llamas, utilizadas como medio de carga, tal como lo hacían los pueblos atacameños. Es aconsejable hacer estas caminatas con agencias de turismo especializadas debido a que no son rutas transitadas y tanto la altitud como las condiciones climáticas requieren de un guía es-pecializado.
San Pedro de Atacama offers a wide variety of trekking circuits and day hikes; enjoying amazing landscapes at an altitude of 2,500 mts. near the Salt Mountain Range and 3,500 mts. to 4,500 mts. views of the Chilean Altiplano to summits over 5,000 mts.
You can experience trekkings with llamas that are used like load animals just like the inhabitants of the zone did in the past.
We advice you to do this treks and hikes with local agencies because these are non-transited routes and the altitude and weather conditions require an experienced guide.

-Valle de la Muerte: En dos horas recorres el Ayllu de Conde Duque hasta el río San Pedro, para cruzar por el desierto hacia el valle de la muerte ubicado en plena cordillera de la Sal, en donde cabalgarás en sus enormes dunas.
-Vuelta a los Ayllus: Recorre las comunidades agrí-colas de San Pedro de Atacama en 3 horas pasando por Yaye, Séquitor, Checar y Solor. Una excelente forma de ver la actualidad del pueblo atacameño.
-Aldea de Tulor: En aproximadamente 4 ho-ras puedes vistar el Ayllu de Coyo y la aldea de Tulor, regresando a San Pedro por el desierto.

-Tunnel: With a duration of 5 hours, this route takes you along the Ayllu of Quitor towards the Valley of Catarpe, then it goes up along the old road until reaching the tunnel. Once you cross the tunnel you go up to the Corniza of the Salt mountain range, which you border to then descend along the enormous dunes of the Death Valley.
-Valle de la Muerte (Death Valley): In two hours you visit the Ayllu of Conde Duque until the San Pedro river, to cross the desert towards the Death Valley located in the midst of the Salt moun-tains, where you will ride its enormous dunes.
-Promenade to the Ayllus: Visit the farming communities of San Pedro de Atacama in 3 hours, passing through Yaye, Sequitor, Che-car and Solor. An excellent way of getting to know modern life in the Atacama villages.

Orion : Una constelación de verano
A diferencia del hemisferio Norte, Orion es una constelación que anuncia la temporada de ve-rano. Orion es sin lugar a dudas la constelación más fácil de identificar, tiene forma de un largo rectángulo, y justo en el centro, ligeramente in-clinadas, se encuentran 3 estrellas, de luminosi-dad similar, conocidas como “Tres Marías¨. Para los Incas, las 4 estrellas que forman el rectagulo de Orion era una alfombra celestial.
Visibilidad
Este mapa te muestra lo que puedes ver, si mi-ras sobre Los Andes desde San Pedro el 15 de Octubre a las 1:00 AM, o el 15 de Noviembre a las 23:00 o el 15 de Diciembre a las 21:00. Esto se debe a que la tierra rota alrededor del sol en 12 meses y porque nuestro día esta divido en 24 horas, por esta razón el cielo cambia 2 horas por mes. Si vez una estrella emerger a media noche, 30 días después emerge a las 22:00 y así sucesi-vamente. Despues de Diciembre, al comenzar la noche, Orion estará cada vez más alto en el cielo, cercano al meridiano.

Orion: A summer constellation
In the north, it is of course a winter constellation, but here it announces the warm season. Orion is maybe the easiest constellation to identify, a rather large rectangle, and just in the cen-ter, slightly tilted, 3 aligned stars of very similar brightness called in the Spanish world « las tres marias ». The rectangle formed by the 4 stars of Orion was a celestial carpet for the Incas.
Visibility
This map is what you can see if you look over the Andes from San Pedro on October 15th at 1:00 in the morning, or November 15th at 23h00, or December 15th at 21h00. As you have unders-tood because the Earth rotates around the sun in 12 months, and because our day is divided in 24 hours, the sky changes 2 hours per month. A star you see one month rising at midnight rises 30 days later at 22h00 and so on. After December at the beginning of the night, Orion will be higher and higher in the sky toward the meridian. In then appears relatively high in the northern sky, upsi-de down compared to the vision in the northern hemisphere.

Mitos y Leyendas
En cada cultura hay un lugar especial para Orión, el grupo de estrellas más visible de todo el cielo. Para los griegos, Orión es un cazador que se-gún la leyenda murió por causa de un escorpión, Zeus, molesto, puso a ambos en el cielo pero en lugares opuestos, por eso cuando vez Orión, la constelación escorpión es invisible ya que está ubicada al otro lado del planeta a 180º. Orión está acompañado de sus perros (Canis Major y Canis Menor).
Usando Orión para hallar otras constelaciones
Si se prolonga el anillo de Orión hacia la derecha, encontraremos fácilmente la estrella más bri-llante de todas, Sirius. Ésta es el coyar del gran perro (Canis major). En la misma línea pero hacia la izquierda se observa una estrella ligeramente anaranjada llamada Aldebaran y si continuamos por esta línea, encontraremos el pequeño cú-mulo estelar llamado Las Pleyadés. En árabe, Al Debaran viene de una palabra que significa “la seguidora”, la estrella que sigue Las Pleyadés.

Legend
Each culture had a special place for Orion, the most obvious group of stars in the whole sky. Orion for the greek is a hunter, and according to the legend was killed by a scorpion. Zeus, upset, placed both of them in the sky, but in opposite places, so that when you see Orion, the scorpion is invisible and located 180° apart (and vice ver-sa). Orion dogs (the big and the small one) ac-company him in the sky.
Using Orion to find other constellations
If one prolongates Orion Belt toward the right, we find quite easily a very bright star, in fact the brightest of all stars : Sirius. Sirius is the collar of the big dog (canis major). The same line, but to the left show us the slightly orange star called Aldebaran, and if we continue the same line, we find the small star cluster called the Pleiades. Viajar en bicicleta es una buena forma de cono-cer la belleza del desierto de Atacama, sin em-bargo, hay que tomar en consideración el clima, el cual es muy seco, con gran radiación solar, con temperaturas muy elevadas en el día (sobre los 30ºC) y muy bajas en la noche (bajo 1ºC); otro factor importante a considerar es la altitud, esta zona se encuentra sobre los 2.900 m.s.n.m. por lo tanto es necesario aclimatarse antes de hacer alguna actividad física exigente. En cada paseo que realices no debes olvidar factor solar, sombrero y mucha agua, antes de emprender un destino infórmate bien de la ruta, ya que en el desierto, entre un pueblo y otro, existen grandes distancias. Es posible arrendar bicicletas en el pueblo de San Pedro de Atacama.
Riding on a bicycle is a great way to enjoy the Atacama Desert’s beauty. This is the driest des-ert in the world, due to its dry climate and solar radiation. During the day, the temperatures reach a high of over 30° C, but at night they drop dra-matically to below 1° C. Another important fac-tor to consider is the altitude of this zone, which reaches 2,900 meters above sea level, making it necessary to adapt to before engaging in any demanding physical activity. Before setting out on a tour, you must keep the sun in mind, so don’t forget to take a hat and lots of water with you. You must also be aware of distances, since it can be a long way from one village to another. In San Pedro de Atacama it is possible to rent bicycles.

› Inca Catarpe Center of Administration: (Half day, difficulty: medium). Located 16 ki-lometers from San Pedro de Atacama. On this same route you can visit the Pukará of Quitor, and the Devil’s Gorge.
› Ayllos:(Half day, difficulty: easy). Beautiful agricul-tural villages located between 3 to 10 kilome-ters from San Pedro de Atacama depending on the Ayllu.
› Moon Valley: (Whole day or half day; difficulty: medium). Located 15 kilometers from San Pedro de Ata-cama.
› Death Valley: (Half day, difficulty: medium). The entrance is 3 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama. The total distance is around 10 kilometers. You can combine this trip with sandboarding.

› Centro de administración Inca Catarpe: (Medio día, dificultad media) Ubicado a 16 Km. de San Pedro de Atacama. Por este cami-no también podrás visitar el Pucará de Quitor y la Garganta del Diablo.
› Ayllus: (Medio día, dificultad fácil) Hermosos po-blados agricultores ubicados entre 3 y 10 km de San Pedro de Atacama dependiendo del Ayllu.
› Valle de la Luna: (Día entero o medio día, dificultad media) Ubicado a 15 Km. de San Pedro de Atacama
› Valle de la Muerte: (Medio día, dificultad media) La entrada está ubicada a 4Km. de San Pedro de Atacama, en total son alrededor de 10 Km. Esta actividad se puede combinar con sandboard.

Debido al clima y la altura en que se encuentra el desierto de Atacama, se puede encontrar una sin-gular flora y fauna típica del lugar, que habita en salares y bofedales a gran altura, esta atracción también promueve la presencia de turistas en la zona, especialmente la Reserva Nacional Los Fla-mencos, dividida en 7 sectores.
Por su extensión se puede observar en su flora: llareta, paja brava, cachiyuyo, etc. En su fauna destacan los flamencos, la vicuña, zorro culpeo, vizcacha, entre otros. Es aconsejable llevar pris-máticos.
Due to its climate and its altitude, in the atacama desert you can find a very special flora and fauna. In this high altitude habitat of salt deposits and wetlands, tourists encounter a unique flora and fauna, especially the Flamingo National Reserve that is divided into 7 areas.
The most abundant plants found in its flora are: llareta, paja brava, cachiyuyo, etc. In the fauna, the most outstanding animals found are: flamin-goes, vicuñas, culpeo fox, vizcacha, and more. It is highly recommended that you bring binoculars for a better view.

› Chaxa Lagoon: In this Natural Reserve you can see three types of parinas or flamingoes. › Meñiques Lagoon: The Horned Coot (Tagua Cornuda) nests every year in this area.
› Guatin Stream: Here you can see an ancient cactus forest, and other kinds of flora like the “Cola de Zorro” (Fox tail) and the “Rica-Rica”.
› Salar de Pujsa:You can find a lot of different kind of fla-mingoes in this area of the Los Flamencos National Reserve.
› Machuca Wetlands:In this sector you can find birds such as the “Puna Duck”, the Giant Coot, the Andean Goo-se, and the Pitio among others.

› Laguna Chaxa: En este sector de la Reserva Nacional se pue-de observar tres tipos de parinas o flamencos y una gran variedad de aves.
› Laguna Meñiques: En este sector la tagua cornuda nidifica todos los años.
› Quebrada de Guatin: Se puede observar un antiguo bosque de cactus, a demás de especies vegetales como la cola de zorro y la rica-rica.
› Salar de Pujsa:En este sector se puede encontrar una gran cantidad de flamencos de diferentes varie-dades.
› Vegas de Machuca:En este sector se puede encontrar aves como pato puna, tagua gigante, guallata, pitío, entre otros.
