After you remove your original headlights and movement mechanism, you are ready toinstall the GT Racing headlight conversion kit #280c.

Align the mounting brackets with the 3 mountingholes, as shown at right. Use fastners to mountbucket, see #1, #2, #3.

Now you are ready to mount and align the #280clear headlight cover to the bucket. Align the clearlens to match the fenderand nose panels. Mark and drill. Fasten the clear lens to the frontfastner and to the two rear fastners.

Mounting Striker Plate:1. There are 2 striker plates, a left and a right.Mount striker plates, with bolts from factory strikerplate, so that the latch mechanism is parallel withthe ground as indicated in the view on the right.2. Locate striker plate in the center (height and lat-eral) of the available adjustment provided by thefactory attachment points and tighten.

Mounting Door Latch Pin Assembly:1. Measure the distance from the top of the doorjam to the center of the striker plate receiving hole(see f1 at right).2. Measure the distance from the outside of thedoor jam to the center of the striker plate receivinghole (f2)3. Transfer dimensions to back of door jam anddrill .385" - .395" diameter hole at that point for thedoor latch pin.4. Drill two .200 diameter holes in a horizontalplane with the .385" - .395" diameter hole to mountdoor latch pin assembly to door.

Door Alignment:1. Close door and check height and lateral align-ment and adjust striker plate as needed.

TOOLSDrill, 1/8" (3mm) bit, 3/16" (5mm) bit C-ClampMedium Phillips screwdriver

(1)Drill three 3/16" (5mm) mounting holes in eachend flange on all three panels. Use the molded-in drill points for exact location.(2)Screw the panels together using the machinescrews and nuts. Be sure to use a washer underboth the crew and nut.(3)Prepare for painting by using wax and greaseremover and wet sanding per standard automo-tive finishing practice. Acrylic, lacquer or enamelpaints may be used.(4)Peal off backing of adhesive tape and apply totop rear edge of back panel.(5)Wipe clean the inside area under the bumperwhich will come in contact with the rear valancetape.(6)Peal off tape backing and slide fiberglassvalance forward into position, first hooking theupper rear lip into position. Then pull the frontflanges up into position as shown. Note that thetop of the valance just covers the "rock guard"coating on the fender.(7) Clamp the valance ends in position and drill 1/8"(3mm) mounting holes using the existing holesas centers. Mount with self-tapping screws andwashers.(8)Make sure the muffler to valance clearance isadequate. Re-adjust exhaust hangers if neces-sary.

1. Put car on jack stands. Measure distance from tub of carto outer lip of quarter panel, use alevel in the center of the wheelarch. The bubble should be in thecenter. When you put on the flareyou can find the placement of thetop of the wheel arch. (see photo#6) mark the inside of the chassiswhere the level was.

2. Example photo with the RSRrear bumper on the car showinghow much wider your quarter panelwill be. 2" wider per side.

3. Have someone help hold fender flare on quarter panel anddraw a line on the panel with amagic marker. Then draw anotherline 1 1/2" or 2" down from thatline. That will be your "cut off" line.

4. Use a cut-off tool to cut oldquarter panel off of the car.Use cut-off wheel, air chisel, orplasma cutter.

5.Below: Example: air chisel cut-off tool.

6. Grind off paint in preparation to glue on fender flare. You canuse a flange air tool to put a 90ºjog in the quarter panel. Theadvantage of using this tool is that you don't have to use asmuch filler.

7. Attach fender flare with sheetmetal screws, using level to find thesame position of the top of thewheel arch.

8. Take measurements from theinside of chassis to outer lip orwheel arch and front and back of fender flare. Be sure they are thesame from side to side.

9. Fit rear bumper to fender flares,making sure that both sides flareout equally.

10. If you have to move the sheet metal screws to make bothsides equal, DO IT! Now it's time to glue on the flare. Use a good 3M2-part glue. Go to your auto bodypaint supply store and buy whatthey recommend. The next day,remove sheet metal screws. Grindand fill gap with Duraglass. Finishwith bondo. Fill underside withseam sealer.

It's not as hard to do as you might think to backdate your short hooded911 to a long hooded 911 ('73 and older). Our kit contains all the neededfiberglass body panels to convert to an RS. But we do recommend usinga body repair shop, experienced in fiberglass work and specificaly a shopthat works on Porsches. But many customers do the conversion their self.

You will need:

A long hood #21 (or a long/short #21SL), front bumper #003, front fenders#29, a duck tail #14, and rear bumper #001.

The main difference between the early and later cars is that the turnsignal is in the fenderand in the '74 andlater, it is in thebumper.

RS optional items:

RS hood rubber draw latches #26, RS Engine lid drawlatches #25, and RSchin spoiler #004A.

Other options arecarbon fiber dash top #144cf, aluminum door hinges #20and 20B, carbon fiber door panels #20P,and 911 door sill #20S

Starting in the front: You start by removing thefront fenders... open the hood and remove the car-peting, spare tire, jack, and also remove the hood.There are 10 mm sheet metal fastners and shimsholding the fender on, and with it are the snap fastners for the carpet tosnap to - save these. Next, inside the wheel well, remove the 10mm fast-ners for the closing panel, the gas bucket cable and gas filler, etc. Open thecar door, and at the A piller area remove the two 10 mm bolts. Now yourfender is ready to be removed.

Removing the front bumper: At this time you may start to remove thefront bumper. The 'smile' (rubber front seal), is also fastened to the frontfender with small fastners. The 'C' clamp that holds the 5 mph bumper

shocks must be removed, ect. You will also need to remove or loosen (andlet dangle) the horns, windshield reservoir and fuel evaporation tank.Remount these after installing the new bumper and fenders.

Removing the rear bumper:

Removing the rear bumper is similar to removing the front. Remove thefastners on the 5 mph shocks, ect. You can use these as support tubes forthe underside of the rear bumper.

NEXT: Some fabrication will be needed.Remove the rear Panel "Porsche" so thatthe new rear bumper (with the bumperets)will fit nicely into that center area.

INSTALLATION:The hood latching system:The 1973 Carrera RS & RSR's used rub-

ber draw latches to hold down both thehood & rear duck tail. This method is whatGT Racing recommends. It makes for an easy installation and an authentic looking finishedmodel.

If you do not want to use the rubber draw latches,we have a great solution! We make a long hood withthe backing from a short/ hood #021SL, so that youcan still use the existing latching mechanism that ison your '74-89 Porsche.

The bumpers:

Some fabricaton will have to be done to mount the RS bumpers. For thefront bumper in the photo, I simply drilled a hole in the front bulkhead andused a long 3" plus bolt to fasten it to the existing bumper bracket alreadyin your new bumper.

In the rear, you need to removethe center two long fiberglass brack-

ets on the fiberglass bumper to fit itto a later car.

Fender installation:Fenders must be shimmed. Shims are installed between the fender flangeand the hood rail. To achieve the best fender to hood seam width, the fendercrown' (the curve at the top of the fender next to the hood) is also adjusted tomatch that of the hood. Then bolts & shimms are installed and tightened oneat the time... working down from the cowl to the bumper..Fender gas bucket:Use the gas bucket door that was on your fender, use the same pull cable toopen the gas door.

Fiberglass vs Carbon Fiber:GTRacing makes high quality, light-weight fiberglass parts. You cansee by the photos how straight and well fitting our panels are.We do not recommend carbon fiber parts... there are disadvantages to usingcarbon fiber parts. There is not that much weight savings over good fiber-glass parts. There is a much higher cost, higher cost of repairs and some pat-tern print-through effect on the paint... all pointing to the superiority of fiber-glass. For race cars, it is an exception.

Another goodoption is our part#004B. This is a spoiler with a 2” splitter. (Aspoiler goesstraight down and a splitter goesstraight out) This spoiler/splitter works so well that it isbarred in Vintage Racing. It creates between 250 and 300 lbs of down-force...that translates to less lift!

Other options are RSR flares (front and rearset #38), carbon fiber dash top #144, aluminum doorhinges #20 and 20B, carbon fiber door panels #20P,and 911 door sill #20S

4. Use a cut-off tool to cut oldquarter panel off of the car.Use cut-off wheel, air chisel, orplasma cutter.

5.Below: Example: air chisel cut-off tool.

6. Grind off paint in preparation to glue on fender flare. You canuse a flange air tool to put a 90ºjog in the quarter panel. Theadvantage of using this tool is that you don't have to use asmuch filler.

7. Attach fender flare with sheetmetal screws, using level to find thesame position of the top of thewheel arch.

8. Take measurements from theinside of chassis to outer lip orwheel arch and front and back of fender flare. Be sure they are thesame from side to side.

9. Fit rear bumper to fender flares,making sure that both sides flareout equally.

10. If you have to move the sheet metal screws to make bothsides equal, DO IT! Now it's time to glue on the flare. Use a good 3M2-part glue. Go to your auto bodypaint supply store and buy whatthey recommend. The next day,remove sheet metal screws. Grindand fill gap with Duraglass. Finishwith bondo. Fill underside withseam sealer.

Windshields are cut to size to fit in the original glass location.They fit in the original gaskets on earlier cars and glue/fastento the urethane beds on later cars.

• To install a windshield in a rubber gasket, use heavy string lubricatedwith dish soap. Place the string at the bottom of the gasket grooveand go all the way around the gasket overlapping the string by a foot or so.Place the windshield against the gasket and slowly pull the string straightaway from the windshield. This will pull the lip of the gasket over the windshield. After you remove all the string, the window should be in placeand no more work is needed.

• To install a windshielsd in a "glue in" car. Cut the old windshield out.Position the windshield on the car and mark with a "SHARPIE" brand penthe outline of the urethane glue bed. Sharpie marks erase with alcohol. Marking the outside of the windshield is easier than doing it from inside the car.After marking the glue land, mask the inside of the windshield and lightly sand the glue land with 100 grit sandpaper to remove the hardcoating and get the urethane to do its job. Bond in the window as you would glass.

After installing the windshield, review your rules and add retainer clips where needed.

NOTES ON PAINTING HARD COATED WINDSHIELDS.

We prefer to use vinyl graphic tape for windshield banners. If you must paint thewindshield, the only paint we have successfully used is "TESTORS LEXAN PAINT". It isavailable at hobby shops appealing to RC car racers. Use of other paints may causedamage to the coatings or plastic itself. We have not tested other paints or solvents on thecoatings and cannot beheld responsible for adverse reactions to materials other than what we recommend.

Your 944 series rear window is cut to size and will fit with minimal trimming if youfollow these steps.

• Cut the old window from the hatch. Clean the old adhesive from the pinch weldseam.

• Position the window on the hatch and tape it down with duct tape. When youhave it where you want it, Drill 5/32 or #21 holes thru the window and pinch weldseam. Start in the center of the top of the window, go to the bottom center and workyour way outboard from the center of the window.

• Use cleco's or temporarily install screws to hold it in place as you do all thedrilling. After drilling, check the edges for fit and use a disc sander with 60 gritpaper to adjust the edges if they need it.

• You can paint the black border on the part if you wish using TESTORS LEXANPAINT" or graphic supply vinyl.

• For final installation, use 6-32 machine screws and nylock nuts to hold thewindow in place. Do not over tighten the screws, the holes are drilled oversize toallow the window to expand and contract with temp changes. Tighten the screwsuntil they just bottom, but can still be turned a bit in the hole.

PORSCHE’S 911 R was Ferdinand Piech’s experiment with production-based vehicles – how light can we make it and howhard can we push it? Marks of the R: outside dry sump oil fill cap for ease of refill during pit stops, and plastic side and quarter windows, with snorkels to bring the air in and louvers to help it out.Even the outside mirrors were considered for their weight.

Piech’s engineers weighed every piece of equipment going ontothe 911 R. The individual taillight lenses together weighed nearly 1/2 kg less than the standard taillight fixture. Rubber tie-downsreplaced heavy metal latches for the front and rear deck lids. Fourprototypes and twenty production models were built, each weighing810 kg (1,760 lb).

THE REAL REASONFOR ALUMINUM DOOR HINGES

The Porsche factory did make aluminum door hinges for the “R” in itsquest to make a 911 as light as possible. They continued to use them ontheir later 911 race cars. But that’s not the only reason that GT Racingdecided to manufacture these hinges. In 1993, it was becoming more diffi-cult to find “used up” doors to take the steel hinges from, for use on our 911R doors. When a dismantler removes a hinge from a usable door, the doorloses its value. Therefore GT Racing began to manufacture #20 our alu-minum door hinge. They are drilled and polished to work as great as theylook. We also make the matching body hinge #20B.

The RS was based on the 911S– and one of the first concerns was to save weight. This was accomplished mainly by removingthe rear seats, making the body of thinner steel, and by using fiberglassbumpers. Another concern was to improve aerodynamics and handling, Thisis where the duck tail and front air-dam played important roles. The engine,also from the 911S, was enlarged to produce 210hp.

Another element of the racing image was the Carrera lettering on the side panels. Although only five hundred cars had to be built to qualifythe Carrera for racing, slightly more than one thousand were completed and sold. Of these, approximately fifty were brought up to full racing specifications and called RSR.

PORSCHE’s 911 IROC RSRThe 911 RSR 3.0 (commonly called IROC RSR), or to be more precise,

what was called an RSR but was really more a combination of RS and RSRcomponents, was specially built just for the series. It was an inspiredconcept, putting twelve of the world’s premier race drivers into identical racecars and letting the flag fall.

It was Roger Penske (along with Les Richter and MIke Phelps) whodeveloped that first IROC challenge. Credit should probably be given to MarkDonohue for suggesting to Penske that Porsche’s RSR would be an ideal carfor the series. According to Karl Ludvigsen (Porsche: “Excellence wasExpected”), Donohue had tested an RSR protype at Paul Ricard late in 1972and was so impressed by the car’s manners and its apparent durability (andDonohue was also confident that Porsche could prepare a fleet of closelymatched cars) that he deemed it ideal for the IROC series.

The Drivers of the first race in 1974 were the reserved championsof motorsport: Bobby Allison, Mark Donohue, Emerson Fittipaldi, GeorgeFollmer, A.J. Foyt, Dennis Hulme, Gordon Johncock, Roger McCluskey,David Pearson, Richard Petty, Peter Revson, Bobby Unser – title holders all,they raced under the banners of the four leading sanctioning bodies at thetime: Formula One (Fittipaldi, Hulme); USAC (Johncock, McCluskey, Unserand Foyt, who replaced a retired Jackie Stewart): NASCAR (Allison,Pearson, Petty); and the SCCA (Donohue in Trans-Am and Can-Am, Follmer,also in both series, and Revson in Can-Am).

The IROC cars sported the narrower RS fenders, which allowed 9.0 inchand 11.0 inch wheels, regular bolt-on rims rather than a full race setup.Goodyear race tires were fitted (which prevented either Mario Andretti or AlUnser, both under contract to Firestone, from competing), Carrera graphicswere replaced by Porsche logos, and each car was painted a bright colorfor easier driver identification and better TV viewing.
