without dental insurance or regular access to dental care are encouraged to participate in the Dentists With a Heart Program being offered during the month of February.

Eligible adults are invited to receive any dental service, like a cleaning or fluoride treat-ment, that could be provided in one visit. Treatment is available on a first come, first served basis through appointments with sea-coast area dentists.

With support from the NH Dental Society and Greater Southeast Component Society, dentists, oral surgeons, dental hy-gienists and other members of the dental team are volunteering time to provide free services as part of this national program.

Dentists With a Heart began in NH in 1988, and has since pro-vided thousands of dollars in free services to area residents.

Most participating offices require participants to call ahead and schedule an appointment, but some are accepting walk-ins. Following is a list of participat-ing dentists along with available

Il-legally posted advertising signs may create a safety hazard for traveling motorists and can be unsightly for residents. Such signs detract from the legitimate business signs approved under the City’s established permitting process.

Business owners who have placed these illegal signs are ad-vised to remove them in advance

of the City’s clean-up effort. Confiscated signs are held for 30 days prior to being recycled or destroyed, unless the sign is claimed by the owner after paying a reclamation fee based on the actual cost of staff hours and equipment use. Repeat of-fenders may be subject to pros-ecution and fines.

DOVER - Living in New Hampshire

has many benefits including the amazing four seasons that we enjoy. However, mixing treacherous winter weather with educational institutions can prove difficult. When the weather makes travel to school unsafe, most schools close for the day and make up that time at the end of the school year.

In 2009, the staff and stu-dents of the Cocheco Arts & Technology Academy found a way to “weatherproof” the school by offering virtual classes online in place of the traditional snow day. Because students who attend CATA come from many surrounding communities, online “Virtual Days” offer the school commu-nity a safe way to hold classes even when road conditions are hazardous.

Students download the links to the virtual classrooms and the times when each of their classes will meet online. Instructors modify the lesson plan to work in an online set-ting and students have the op-portunity to participate via webcam, microphone and/or chat. Interaction with students is relatively seamless, as it

would be in a traditional class-room setting. Attendance is taken and reported as a normal school day, and administration monitors each class to insure that students are participating.

The overall response to virtual days is very positive. Parents and staff alike appreci-ate the safety of not having to drive in hazardous conditions and the ability to maintain an academic calendar. Students also enjoy the novelty of being able to attend class from their living rooms. When warm weather comes, and the rest of New Hampshire is still in school, CATA students will be getting a jump on summer fun.

Leasing instead of buying a vehicle has

its benefits. Drivers who lease often cite the fun of

getting a new car every few years and the peace of mind of knowing they won’t have to deal with costly repairs as-sociated with older vehicles as two of the best reasons to lease a vehicle.

While leases make practi-cal sense for many drivers, the leasing process can be tricky to navigate. The following are a few things drivers should know about leasing before signing a new agreement.

Avoid high down payments.Though many drivers are

attracted to leasing because the monthly payments are typically much less expensive than they would if drivers fi-nanced a vehicle, such drivers should know that those low monthly payments are often accompanied by hefty down payments, sometimes as much as several thousand dollars at the time the lease is signed.

to another vehicle. If your lease terms are more than three years, consider purchasing an ex-tended warranty to cover the remaining years of the lease. But in general it’s best to limit leases to three years or less, when the car is unlikely to need repairs and, even if it does, such repairs are likely to be covered by the manufactur-er’s warranty.

This article was provided by MetroCreative. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by MetroCreative articles.

But such hefty down pay-ments can prove problematic if the car is damaged or stolen. In such instances, the insurance company is likely to reimburse the leasing agency for the value of the car, but not the driver. So the driver might be out his or her down payment and be left without a car. That’s why it’s beneficial for men and women leasing a vehicle to keep their down payments to a minimum, and ideally make no down pay-ment at all. This will increase your monthly payment, but you will have the peace of mind of knowing you won’t be out sev-eral thousand dollars should the car be wrecked or stolen during the lease.

Purchase gap insurance.Another financial concern

for lessees is what happens if the car is totaled or stolen. In such instances, the insurance com-pany will reimburse the leasing agent for the value of the car at the time of the accident or theft, but drivers might still be on the hook for the total obligation of

the lease. That means the value reimbursed to the leasing com-pany will be subtracted from the remaining balance on the lease, and drivers will still be respon-sible for paying the difference.

The only way drivers can protect themselves in such in-stances is to purchase gap insur-ance, which will cover the differ-ence should the car be wrecked or stolen. Some leasing contracts already include gap insurance, but drivers should confirm this before signing the agreement.

Buy extra miles in advance. Leases come with mileage

restrictions, and an agreement that comes with an especially low monthly payment will often stipulate that drivers cannot exceed 12,000 miles per year over the life of the lease. If you exceed that limit, the agreement might charge you as much as 25 cents per mile over the limit, which can add up to a consider-able amount of money depend-ing on how many miles over that limit you go. If you know you are likely to exceed 12,000 miles

per year, buy extra miles before signing the agreement. This won’t cost you money up front, but rather will lead to a slightly higher monthly payment.

Don’t sign an agreement that’s too long.

The benefit of leasing is that you aren’t still driving the car when it starts to exhibit the wear and tear that is inevitable with older vehicles. So drivers should limit the terms of their lease to two or three years; a period during which the vehicle will still be under warranty. Once the warranty has expired, it’s time for lessees to move on

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

On April 8, 2014, Windows XP becomes Windows XPired!

Microsoft will stop providing security updates which keep your data safe.

Continuing to use XP will be like leaving home at night, leaving the lights on with the

front door open and a big sign saying, “My Security System is Broken!”

Call The Computer Lady TODAY to help you keep the bad guys out! 207-676-9561

Dear Computer Lady,What is the big deal about

Windows 8? They’re always coming out with new versions. What is so different (and awful) about this one?

Everybody I know just groans and rolls their eyes when it is mentioned, and says stay away from it as long as you can. I’ve adapted to every one that came along, so why is this one so bad?

Thanks, Nancy

Dear Nancy,The big difference with

Windows 8 is that instead of a start menu, there is now a start screen with tiles. It looks more like the screen on a windows phone.

Since this new interface is optimized for a touch screen, it often feels awkward when trying

to navigate with a mouse.I personally don’t think

there is anything awful about this version of Windows, it is just different, and it is part of human nature to dislike change.

The good news is that Win-dows 8 can be customized to look and act like earlier versions of Windows. This gives you the user interface that you are used to, while retaining the updated security of the new operating system. I have customized quite a few Windows 8 computers re-cently, and everyone seems to be happy with it. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,When I purchased my PC,

it came with iTunes installed. I continually get update notices regarding this program and I always allow the update.

I notice that this program

takes up a lot of space. Do I really need it? I don’t listen to music on my PC, and if I did, are there other programs that would take the place of iTunes?

Thank you so much for your help, Ron

Dear Ron,iTunes is the program you

would use to sync an iDevice (like an iPhone, iPod, or iPad) with your computer. You can use it to transfer music, pictures and other files to your iDevice.

If you don’t have one of those apple devices, then you don’t need to have iTunes in-stalled on your computer.

Your computer probably has windows media player in-stalled, and you can use that to listen to music on your PC.Elizabeth

Hi Computer Lady,I have Windows 7 and had

downloaded Quicken Deluxe 2008.

After a computer crash, Windows 7 was restored along with the Quicken files, but I could not reload the software program and therefore was not able to access my Quicken files.

Now I need to know which Quicken Software program to buy for home use so it will allow me to access and update my old files.

I had tried Quicken Starter,

but could never unlock the pro-gram or download it to get it started and sent it back. Hope-fully you have an answer for me.

Many thanks, L. Walker

Dear L,The “Starter” version of

Quicken is only for those who want to start a new file. It does not include the capability of opening an existing Quicken file, which is probably why you were unable to get it to work on your files.

There are several versions of Quicken available that will allow you to access and update your old files. Quicken Deluxe, Quicken Home & Business, and Quicken Premier would all work for you. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,I have new Windows 8

computer.Can I install Microsoft

Office 7 or 10 on my computer? The new Office is good for

one year, while older versions are good for the life of the com-puter and expensive.

Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave,I have not yet experimented

with different versions of Office on Windows 8, but after a bit of research online, it looks like you should be able to run either Office 2007 or 2010 on your new Windows 8 Computer.

I do want to explain a little bit about the new office. There are actually two different ver-sions of Office 2013. One is subscription based. It lets you purchase a one year subscription and use it on up to 5 devices, in-cluding your Mac and tablet. All your work is stored in the cloud so that you can work on your documents in one location and pick right back up where you left off from another location.

Microsoft also sells Office 2013 in a stand-alone version which does not expire after one year, but you can only install it on one computer and it will not be continuously updated like the 360 version.

If both of those options are not in your price range, there is always the free, open source, ver-sion of Office called Open Office at www.openoffice.org. Open source simply means that it was created by a group of volunteers instead of a company. Open Office can read files created in Microsoft Office, and save files in Office format as well.Elizabeth

is pleased to announce that Randy Potter has joined the company as assistant vice presi-dent, residential lending officer and will work out of the Dover office located at 701 Central Ave.

Steve Byrnes, executive vice president and chief sales officer made the announce-ment, “We are thrilled to wel-come Randy to the Residential Lending team; his reputation for making the mortgage pro-cess seamless and enjoyable will serve him well as he assists customers who are looking for home financing.”

DOVER -The Dover Chamber was

pleased to welcome Orange Leaf with a traditional ribbon cutting that also served as the store’s grand opening in Dover. To cel-ebrate the occasion, Orange Leaf Dover offered half price yogurt during its celebration between 3and 7 p.m.

DOVER - The Dover Chamber was

pleased to welcome 7th Settle-ment Brewery with a traditional ribbon cutting.

7th Settlement is an in-house brewery that offers farm-to-table food crafted from fresh, local ingredients along with its signature craft beer. Found-ers and business partners Dave Boynton and Josh Henry opened the doors to the brewery in fall 2013. Featured beers include brews not only from 7th Settle-ment, but One Love Brewery, a sister brewery located in 7th Settlement.

The brewery is unique to Dover and community-sup-ported, having received fund-ing from founders clubs, crowd funding, local banks and local investors. Boynton and Herny,

both proud residents of Dover, are community oriented in their operation of the brewery. They just launched a new program to host non-profits and community groups on Sundays, donating 10 percent of the day’s net profits to the featured organization of the day.

7th Settlement Brewery is located at 47 Washington Street, Dover. The restaurant is open from noon to 11 p.m. on Tues-days and Wednesdays, from noon to midnight on Thursdays and Fridays, from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays, and is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. The brewery is closed on Sundays.
