GROWING OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPORT TO THE DRCBusiness to Business meetings where local companies managed to leverage business deals with some prominent mining companies in the DRC like, Barrick gold co-operation, Kamowa Mine and Ivan Hoe Mine, among others.

This month ZimTrade, in partnership with COMESA, facilitated an European Union (EU) funded, 2-day training workshop, on branding and packaging. The training

received an overwhelming interest with an audience of over 60 participants in Harare. The main aim of the workshop was to educate SME manufacturing companies, on packaging goods for export.

After running a scoping exercise ZimTrade, discovered that raw material constitutes a large number of total exports from Zimbabwe, this does not support the country’s economic growth agenda as we are exporting jobs instead of creating employment for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth. Current trade data shows that Zimbabwe is overly reliant on raw material exports namely, minerals (54%) and unmanufactured tobacco (21.3%)

ZimTrade in response to this, partnered with the International Trade Centre (ITC) and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) to facilitate a series of training workshops for Zimbabwean companies. The objective was to improve Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) international competitiveness by training them on how to package their products for export, including an understanding of packaging trends in the global market space.

The fi rst workshop, called the Train the Trainer Programme, saw selected companies in the packaging sector receiving training from Geneva based ITC expert consultant Dr. Jacky Charbonneau. The success of the workshop prompted another

engagement, between the SMEs industry and the packaging sector to discuss ways to improve their value-chain systems and educate SME’s on different packaging techniques that could increase their competitiveness in the export market.

Mr. Sean Tshuma, Sales and Marketing manager for Repro Print said, “packaging is a products’ silent salesperson and it is important for companies to know the advancements made in the packaging industry if they want to compete successfully. It’s a combination of technology coming together with traditional packaging to reach international standards.”

Some trends in the packaging industry discussed at the workshop included, sustainable and recyclable packaging, for example, edible packaging, and technological advancements in the packaging sector, for example, Quick Response (QR) code scanning.

ZimTrade, the countries trade development and promotion organisation, for the fi rst time

participated at the just ended Copperbelt, Agricultural, Mining, Industrial, Networking and Enterprise Expo (CAMINEX) in Zambia and managed to scoop a 3rd place award under the Advisory and Sector Representation Bodies Category. The award was is recognition of the role played by the organisation in supporting Zimbabwean companies to forge networks with regional markets in order to grow exports.

CAMINEX is a premier exhibition held annually in Kitwe-the copperbelt region and this year’s edition was held under the theme “Developing networks for Empowerment and Growth”.

ZIMTRADE RECEIVES AWARD AT CAMINEX 2019

Zambia is increasingly becoming a business destination with the country strategically positioned as a gateway into the DRC market, one of the markets that ZimTrade is encouraging exporters to tap into. Zambia has a population of 17 million with a GDP per Capita of US$1 552 Trade between Zambia and Zimbabwe has decreased by 35 % from 2014 to 2018, with exports to Zambia recorded at US$66 million in 2018 from US$122 million in 2014 and efforts need to be made to improve export numbers.

Recently, ZimTrade did a market survey in the Copperbelt region to explore various export opportunities. The exhibition was an ideal platform that companies used to tap into the opportunities that lie within the Copperbelt region.

As the only trade expo in the Copperbelt, CAMINEX attracts businesses from all mining houses in the province and is a great platform to network and grow export opportunities. Nine local companies were facilitated to participate at CAMINEX 2019, and products showcased included electricals, chemicals, pumps and valves, protective clothing and conveyor belts, amongst others.

“We have been struggling to secure appointments over years and we also had managed to get a lot of leads in the Copperbelt which are very essential as part of our efforts to tap into the Copperbelt market.”

Other participating countries include South Africa, USA, China, Botswana, Spain and German.

ZIMTRADE RECEIVES AWARD AT CAMINEX 2019

ZAMBIA

ZimTrade has identifi ed Zambia as one of the markets with potential for Zimbabwean products and services. With a population of 17 million and a GDP per Capita of US$1 552, there is a potential for Zimbabwe to grow its exports from the current US$67 million as depicted in chart below.

Zambia is amongst the top fi ve export markets for Zimbabwean products. Statistics from Zimstat have shown that Zimbabwe accounts for less than 5% of Zambia’s total import bill, despite the proximity. In 2018 Zimbabwe exported products worth US$66 million against imports of US$177 million leading to a trade defi cit of US$111 million. Zimbabwe’s major exports to Zambia in 2018 were mainly composed of fi sh, tea, unmanufactured tobacco, cement, cane sugar, among others. Zimbabwe and Zambia have cordial trade and economic relations and Zimbabwean companies should take advantage of that benefi t from the growth of the Zambian economy.

Zambia is strategically positioned as a gateway into the central African markets such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Central African Republic and is one of the key markets in SADC for businesses looking to increase brand awareness, generate new ideas and form new partnerships.

Following the market survey, ZimTrade facilitated the participation of companies at the recently ended CAMINEX trade expo, which is the only mining, agricultural and industrial trade expo that takes place in the Copperbelt. Opportunities which were identifi ed in the two sectors were for products such as safety clothing, fast moving consumer goods, Iron and steel products, electric transformers, pumps for liquids; silo maintenance and cleaning services, fruit & vegetables, juices, among others.

ZimTrade is also facilitating the participation of companies at the Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Show (ZACS) which will be held from 31 July to 5 August 2019. The show will provide a forum for Zimbabwean companies to exchange information, showcase their farming and industrial technologies as well as engage in B2B meeting with potential buyers from the region and beyond.

Zimbabwe and Zambia are both members of the the Southern African Development Community (SADC) protocol on trade and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). The SADC Protocol is an agreement between SADC Member States to reduce customs duties and other barriers to trade on products from each other. By January 1, 2008, most customs duties (on 85% of tariff lines) had been eliminated for goods originating from SADC Member States. COMESA implemented Simplifi ed Trade Regime (STR) to help the small trader to benefi t from the preferential rates enjoyed by commercial traders when importing or exporting goods within the COMESA Bloc.

Zimbabwean companies in the processed foods and mining supplies sectors are encouraged to attend the Dissemination Seminars and to take advantage of opportunities in the Zambian market.

For more information on trading under COMESA Free Trade Area (FTA), COMESA STR and SADC Trade Protocol refer to ZimTrade’s “Guide to Zimbabwe’s Trade Agreements”.

In May 2019, ZimTrade conducted a market survey in Zambia where vast opportunities were identifi ed in the processed foods and mining supplies sectors. The fi ndings will be disseminated at a Seminar which will be conducted in Harare and Bulawayo on 10 and 11 July 2019 respectively.

FocusProductAvocado

The avocado is popular in vegetarian cuisine as a substitute for meats in sandwiches and salads because of its high fat content. Generally, the fruit is served raw, though some varieties like the Hass can be cooked for a short time without becoming bitter. Their potential health benefi ts include improving digestion, decreasing risk of depression and protection against cancer.

OPPORTUNITIES The Hass avocado, with pebbled black skin, is currently the main planted variety. The global import of avocados almost doubled in the period 2014 to 2018 from US$3.4 billion to US$6.1 billion. The European market is increasingly appreciating this fruit and the upward trend is driven by consumer demand for ready-to-eat and healthy food. Mexico is the major supplier of avocados and the

best opportunities are in large markets such as France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom, which are often supplied by The Netherlands.

MARKET ANALYSIS The Netherlands is the second largest non-producing exporter of avocados in the world and according to Eurostat, Zimbabwe’s exports of avocados to the European Union member states has been increasing over the years. In 2018, Zimbabwe exported avocados worth EUR5.7million to the EU, with 53% of the total exports destined for The Netherlands. The European market is expected to grow further in the coming years and will remain competitive since importers prefer larger producers because

of supply certainty. Global supply of avocados is highest from February to September, when prices are lower than during the rest of the year. In periods of low global supplies, especially in October and November, prices of small volumes of ready-to-eat avocados tend to increase their prices to approximately US$15 per 4kg box.

Zimbabwe has potential to increase export of avocados to the EU considering the favourable climatic conditions suitable to organically grow avocados. Avocados are a crop that most easily lends itself to organic practices because of the relatively low pest pressure, low nutrient demand and low weed pressure when mature.

ZimTrade urges Zimbabwean avocado growers to take advantage of the duty-free market access under the interim Economic Partnership Agreement ratifi ed under the Eastern and Southern Africa countries and the European Union.

Avocados (Persea Americana) are green or brown-skinned, pear-shaped or egg-shaped fruits that ripen after harvesting. The fruit can self-pollinate because of dichogamy in its fl owering and this added to the long juvenile period, makes the species diffi cult to breed. Most varieties are propagated by grafting.
