Objectives

• Understand why it is important to follow very strict safety procedures when growing microbes

• Follow the safety procedure to inoculate agar plates

Agar plates

• This is an agar plate. It contains a jelly with all the nutrients for bacteria to grow.

• You can get different colour agar plates, these are designed specifically for certain types of microbe.

Inoculating Plates

• Cut out the pictures and put them in the order you think they should go

• Don’t stick them down until you have checked them with me.

Safety

• Why do you think it is important that we follow such a strict safety procedure?

• To avoid growing any dangerous bacteria

• To avoid contamination

• To avoid getting any bacteria where we don’t want it

Set up your plates• Divide your plate into 2

sections and place milk on 1 side and something from the lab on the other

• DO NOT BREATH, SNEEZE OR COUGH ON THE PLATE OR TOUCH IT WITH FINGERS

• Label and seal your plate properly

• Draw your plate into your book so it takes up half a page. Label it as yours is, ready to draw in your results next lesson

• Make a prediction about what you think you will see when we look at the plates
