Objectives
• Understand why it is important to follow very strict safety procedures when growing microbes
• Follow the safety procedure to inoculate agar plates
Agar plates
• This is an agar plate. It contains a jelly with all the nutrients for bacteria to grow.
• You can get different colour agar plates, these are designed specifically for certain types of microbe.
Inoculating Plates
• Cut out the pictures and put them in the order you think they should go
• Don’t stick them down until you have checked them with me.
Safety
• Why do you think it is important that we follow such a strict safety procedure?
• To avoid growing any dangerous bacteria
• To avoid contamination
• To avoid getting any bacteria where we don’t want it
Set up your plates• Divide your plate into 2
sections and place milk on 1 side and something from the lab on the other
• DO NOT BREATH, SNEEZE OR COUGH ON THE PLATE OR TOUCH IT WITH FINGERS
• Label and seal your plate properly
Results
