A budding talent

Ryan Habgood, Future Shipbuilder

“It’s not an easy time,” said Ryan Habgood. “It’s hard for everybody right now.” Knowing that the economic climate is sparing no one makes Ryan even more appreciative of the people who give to the PCC Foundation to support scholarships like the one he received this year. “It helps a lot. Students always need more money,” he said. For Ryan, a scholarship means the opportunity to pursue welding and someday build ships, the career he chose after discovering he couldn’t find a job with the bachelor’s degree he already had. “I always wanted to be good at just one thing,” he said, smiling. “Welding is like an art form to me.”

To learn and grow

Wendy Sullivan, Future Health Care Professional

When Wendy Sullivan talks about her three-year-old son Xander, her eyes light up. “I can’t imagine life without him,” she said. Even so, being a single parent in school is no easy task. To make ends meet, they moved in with family members. Wendy can’t wait for the day when she can afford a place of their own. Thanks to the PCC Foundation, that day will soon be at hand. The scholarship paying for tuition, books and fees has freed up resources for her to put Xander in day care three days a week so she can complete the clinical experience she needs to graduate from PCC’s radiography program. “It makes a huge difference,” said Wendy. “A stable environment gives you the peace to learn.”

Without her scholarship from the PCC Foundation, Nhi Vu would not have the time to do the work she loves while building her leadership skills and going to school. “I want to be a leader,” said Nhi, who is studying business. In the last year and a half at PCC, Nhi has proven that she is exactly that. She serves as Director of

Diversity for the Associated Students of Portland Community College (ASPCC), works for Food Services and takes a full load of classes. One of Nhi’s

biggest challenges was chairing last year’s Asian New Year celebration, which drew more than 500 participants from PCC and the surrounding community. It’s successes like these that make the struggle worth it. “Every single student has a problem with finances,” said Nhi. “If people can contribute a little bit, it helps students create a better life.”

how TO grow a future

At campuses across the District, PCC students are thriving! With the right tools, learning environment and mentoring, our future leaders and professionals are growing right here at PCC.

In your work at the college, you have seen that PCC students come in many varieties that will eventually bloom into the professionals and citizens that keep our communities running. There is no better way to grow a future – for students and our region – than to give to the PCC Foundation.

It’s easy to give by payroll deduction

Payroll deduction is a great way to give. You can choose to donate one hour’s pay a month, or a specified amount each month. If you are a current donor using payroll deduction and want to continue giving at the same level and to the same fund, you don’t have to do anything. If you want to increase your payroll deduction, are new to payroll deduction, or would like to change the designation of your gift, simply submit a new donation form with the new information. Gifts can be split between two or more funds.

You choose what to support

You decide where your contribution goes! You can choose to give a greatest need gift, which will go to priorities such as the PCC Foundation scholarships, mini grants and program support, or you can designate a scholarship fund or a program fund for excellence. You can find lists of existing funds at www.pcc.edu/foundation.

Many ways to give

♦ Check or credit card ♦Online♦ Payroll deduction ♦Make a pledge

Whatever way you choose to contribute, please know that your gift is making a better future for PCC students and our community.

Thank you for supporting the growth

of our community.

Another chance at a matching gift

The PCC Foundation is excited to announce that the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation is offering a second year of the matching challenge to community colleges in Oregon, including the PCC Foundation. If you invest in scholarships between now and March 31, 2010, your contribution will help us meet the requirements for the Miller Foundation. This year, Miller will match all new and increased gifts for scholarships up to $320,000.

Grow hundreds of futures

During these tough economic times, support for students is vital. Your gift will go to help the immediate needs of students. Last year, contributions from faculty, staff and retirees were essential in helping us meet the Miller Foundation Challenge, which matched $320,000 in scholarship donations. As PCC continues to experience an upsurge in enrollment and requests for financial assistance, additional scholarship money addresses unprecedented need. This year, our goal is to provide 500 scholarships - more than ever before!
