MORE RAM REQUIREDDaft Punk have finally announced the title of their new album and its release date. The album Random Access Memories is expected to be releases Fri 17 May. This will be the French dance duo’s fourth album out via their Daft Life imprint on Columbia. The follow-up to 2005’s Human After All will contain 13 new tracks, however, the track listing and song titles have yet to be confirmed.

NEW ALBUM: OUT FRI 17 MAY

MORE LULLABIESQueens of the Stone Age have revealed that their new album will be called ...Like Clockwork. Reports are that the long-awaited record will be released in June and that a new drummer will also be revealed shortly. Dave Grohl contributed drums to ...Like Clockwork, but is not thought to be touring with the band. Guest on the album includes Elton John Trent Reznor, Mark Lanegan, Nick Oliveri and Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters.

ROMANCE LOSTAfter 12 years together, My Chemical Romance has called it quits. The announcement was made through their website last Friday. “Being in this band for the past 12 years has been a true blessing. We’ve gotten to go places we never knew we would. We’ve been able to see and experience things we never imagined possible. We’ve shared the stage with people we admire, people we look up to, and best of all, our friends. And now, like all great things, it has come time for it to end. Thanks for all of your support, and for being part of the adventure.”

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTWill Arnett has made a few hints about the upcoming fourth season of Arrested Development. Arnett, who plays Gob Bluth, said that the family had “kind of fallen apart” and that “Left to their own devices, all of these characters will evolve into the worst versions of themselves,” reports Us Weekly. The actor was speaking to the magazine at a recent event at SXSW in Austin, Texas and also gave insight into his own character’s development. “[Gob’s] got a new group of friends. He’s running with a pretty fast crowd. His fallback is always his illusions. Magic is who he is,” he said.

Your house is on fire, what do save? We live in a commune. Material objects do not concern us.

Favourite ‘90s TV show? In the ‘90s, we were too busy figuring out how the internet worked to watch TV.

Dream job as a kid? Kids shouldn’t have jobs. Little fingers should be used for picking not packing.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be? We’d be a human pyramid or a flash mob.

Ultimate festival line-up? Fela Kuti, Manu Chao, The Free Design, Miles Davis, Radiohead, Tim Maia, Beck, A Tribe Called Quest, Stevie Wonder, Tom Waits, Public Enemy, Shin Joong Hyun, Os Mutantes, The Meters, The Clash and Snarky Puppy.

Who would play you in a film? We’d be the entire cast of Robert Altman’s ensemble musical drama, Nashville (1975).

How do you discover new music? When you live in a commune, keeping up with current trends in popular culture is not a priority.

Worst job you’ve had? Once we played a show where the green room was a toilet and we had no amps. There was a hens’ party that invaded the stage. Our rider was Brahma. Shall I go on...?

Which song do you wish you wrote? Wishing never really achieves anything. To be a successful world music band you don’t wish, you do.

Biggest fear? Trees are dying.

First gig in attendance? Our first show was at the Galatos Lounge Bar way back when people used to go to the Galatos Lounge Bar. There are only two current members from that gig left.

Any vices? There’s a bottle of single malt whisky on our rider.

Favourite lyric? “I believe the children are the future, teach them to spell and let them lead the way.”

Tami Neilson, Delaney Davidson & Marlon Williams (joined by multi-instrumentalist Dave Khan) make up this diverse line- up of some of the nation’s most prestigious, award-winning alt-country artists in a collaborative performance bound to turn the traditional country genre on its head.

The iconic Easter Waiheke Island International Jazz Festival serves up an all star line-up of talent across four all-weather venues. Over 100 musicians will perform over the three days with gusto like you have never seen. The festival starts on Good Friday with the grooving tunes and won’t let you go until Sunday.

It’s a regular Wednesday night at Sale St – and you know what that means, it’s time to get funky. No bass is too much, no groove too freaky. Join Manuel Bundy and Submariner as their friends come around for the party – and you’re all invited. Line-up features the usual suspects Isaac Aesili, Selecta Sam and Jason Eli.

Our: House is known for bringing the big guns when it comes to an all-night dance party. This Easter special is about throwing your hands up in the air, like you just don’t care, and getting down to everything that’s hot in the electronic scene. It’s a smorgasbord of great dance music all in one great venue.

No long do you need to say ‘Thnks Frth Mmr’s – Fall Out Boy is putting their hiatus aside and heading our way for one night only. They’re clearly still firm favourites with two sold-out Australian shows. The multi-platinum Grammy-nominated band is back with a new sound.

As part of the National Jazz Festival, the whirlwind funk-fest – namely the iconic The Hurricane Party – is back! It sees the return of Spiral presenting their energetic take on funk and contemporary jazz. Joined by funk upstarts Hipstamatics, this exceptional line up of two great bands will have you dancing to the early hours.

It’s time to celebrate being young by supporting our generation with a fun and also inspirational concert. It’s a big line-up of all star performers, including House of Shem, Ria Hall and guest appearances from the Chiefs and the Vodafone Warriors. Hosted by league player Wairangi Koopu and James Rolleston (also known as the face of Vodafone and Boy).

Hosted at Wellington’s venue where anything goes, Gold Medal Famous is the avant-garde pop group straight out of the capital. The band is comprised of Tamsin, Vorn and Chris. Their latest offering 100% Pure continues the band’s commitment to a wide variety of styles, from the electro-pop to the sludge-metal.

Easter weekend 2013 welcomes the return of the unique biennial southern showcase – the Catlins River Festival. The idyllic, secluded spot hosts over 50 live, local and diverse music acts in a family friendly atmosphere. There are plenty of places to relax with your friends (or party hard) in the beautiful surroundings.

Clinging to the last remaining rays for sunshine, New Zealand musicians flock to the gorgeous Coromandel. National treasure and ‘Loyal’ companion Dave Dobbyn makes a characteristic appearance. He’s joined by first-class composer Greg Johnson and Christchurch five-piece Dukes.

Shadow Light is the third full-length album from Auckland septet Tahuna Breaks, and it’s been a lengthy four-year wait for fans since the band’s last release – 2009’s Black, Brown & White. Claiming diverse influences from James Brown to Groove Armada, Tahuna Breaks have carved themselves a well-deserved place in the hearts of Kiwis young and old.

The band has changed direction with Shadow Light, moving away from their reggae roots and towards a sound that is bigger, darker and heavier. This evolution is at least partially attributable to UK dance producers Crazy P, who became involved with the band after remixing their 2009 single ‘We Funk The Party’.

Crazy P’s musical directorship even extended to refereeing on occasions when the band understandably struggled to align the diverse interests of its seven members. Mostly self-recorded, the album has been a long two years in the making, and delivers a new take on the Tahuna Breaks sound.

Spanning funk, disco, soul, roots, and electronica, it combines elements from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and today into finger-snapping and eminently danceable funk. Marty Greentree’s vocals are rustic and soulful, delivering lyrics that are wistful and uplifting in equal measure; reliving past regrets and expounding general philosophical musings about love and life.

From the plunky synths and hand claps on the sensuous and sassy ‘Groovy’, to the bouncy brass and

“rock ‘n’ roll and disco soul” on ‘Smooth’, the album claps its hands through a regrettably short eight tracks and two remixes. Standout tracks include the high-energy and housey transformation that Magik Johnson has crafted with ‘Moves’, and the trumpty and modern disco funk of opening track ‘Lady’.

The moodily inspiring ‘Stars’ is a favourite, with its tinkly percussion and emotive guitars, as is the dance-inspired first single ‘Fearless’. Shadow Light gets better the more times you listen and is a credible third effort from the Tahuna Breaks boys.

My only real criticism is that it feels like they ran out of steam and released the album a few tracks short – perhaps this is one of the reasons fans have had to wait so long for its release. Nevertheless, the album is funky and disco-heavy, making it the perfect injection of funk for your gatherings. Just make sure they’re not too long. The album is in stores from Friday, March 22 and will be supported by a nationwide tour in April.

WRITTEN BY PENNY HARRIS

Like your music with a bit of sizzle? This is the place for you. Newly refurbished, The Empire has live entertainment every Saturday and Sunday to give you your weekend dose of relaxation (and dancing). Why not make a night of it – they’ve also got a ridiculous deal on a 250g steak for only $5.

Slip into a Sunday coma of sleep and sedation with the acoustic sounds at La Zeppa. No doubt they will have hot food on the menu to cure the sleep deprivation from the night before – and fix the stomach lining. It’s a regular fixture at the Auckland bar and one that’s super popular so get in early for the best seats.

Siblings Kitty, Daisy & Lewis are difficult to define. Firstly, there are two girls and a boy. That was easy. But when it comes to their style, it’s an amalgamation of R&B, swing, jump blues, country and western, hawaiian and rock ‘n’ roll. It’s quite a mouthful, but their genre-mashing has gained them an adoring following.

Dopamine is proud to announce the first New Zealand appearance of Blu & Exile. The Los Angeles-based group is joined by producer and Detroit’s hip-hop ambassador to the world HouseShoes. To top it all off, the set is rounded out by the beat-tastic @peace. It’s time to put down what you’re doing and get down – in the dancing sense.

Celebrating their fifth anniversary this year, the Auckland band is making a return to the live circuit. This is the first time in a year that they’ll be taking their mixture of “pleasant melody and smashing dissonance, complex structures and punky mess” on the road. Be sure not to miss this guitar-smashing live show.

Alt-country rockers Wilco made their mark on modern music with their landmark album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot has been recognised as one of the most significant albums of the century thus far, despite its fraught gestation. They’ve got a sound to match their personality and it’s something to be experienced live.

On Fri 13 Apr 2012, English folk/punk singer-songwriter Frank Turner took to the stage at Wembley Arena for the largest headline show of his life. Almost exactly one year later, he returns to New Zealand to perform two concerts in Auckland and Wellington. We feel honoured to have him in our country.

British icons Gerry & The Pacemakers announce their Farewell World Tour, joined by fellow UK supergroup The Searchers, who are currently on their 50th Anniversary World Tour. Gerry & The Pacemakers were a major part of what history calls “The ‘60s British Invasion” along with a little band called The Beatles.

Showcasing Hamilton’s musical talent in a kicked-back setting, come for free live music, finger food and awesome drink specials. Feel free to go for a jam– speaker /PA system is provided, as well as a sound desk and ability to play backing tracks. Just bring your instruments, or your vocal chords.

Michael Kiwanuka, one of the most thrilling new voices in contemporary soul music, is making his Kiwi debut at long last. His hugely successful debut album Home Again has seen his voice compared to the sound of the legendary Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye. The Brit is gaining critical acclaim and it’s time for New Zealand to find out why.

In case you haven’t heard, the talented ‘Rise Up’ hitmakers have been snapped up by a European label and the boys are bidding adieu to their homeland. So, as a tribute to their fans – and to keep us happy in their absence! – they are putting on one last tour before they’ll be back for the summer (no doubt).

Down the Hatch – a very apt way to say, let’s drink, celebrate the weekend and kiss goodbye to the week that was. These guys are all about getting the two days off started the right way so every Friday night at Sale St you’ll find The Beat Council, Dave Hull, Page 3 and Dee Why.

My Bonnie lies over the ocean – and now she’s coming to our shores. She has become a touchstone for young artists, with Adele releasing a cover of ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ in 2011 and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon called her “one of our greatest” artists during his medley of the same song and and ‘Nick of Time’.

Villainy launch into 2013 with an eight-date nationwide tour joined on all shows by special guests Rival State. Villany’s album Mode. Set. Clear launched with a bang last year, debuting at number one on the New Zealand Top 40 and spawned three massive radio hits. It’s been a good year and 2013 is set to be even bigger.

US reggae octet Soja are teaming up with Kiwi groups Three Houses Down and Swiss for a legendary live show. Soja’s style will be familiar to and appreciated by New Zealand’s vast homegrown reggae audience, with a style reminiscent of Aotearoa roots greats such as Katchafire and Fat Freddy’s Drop.

As one part of Led Zeppelin, I don’t care what he says – it’s as close as we can get to having them live on a New Zealand stage. The lead singer and frontman presents songs from his early days in the band to his more recent adventures in the heart land of the US.

Tattletale Saints have just returned from Nashville, Tennessee where they recorded their debut album entitled How Red Is the Blood. It’s not just the day of Jesus’ resurrection – it also marks what would be the end of a normal weekend, except Easter Monday is also a public holiday, so rejoice! On the down side, it means your favourite pub will close at midnight on Saturday, so no big booze up for you. Swap the vodka for Easter eggs.

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at arts and crafts? Well, now you can – you just need to find a child to accompany you and it is totes legit. Have fun learning a variety of printmaking processes and how to use a printing press. This course will cover monoprint, collagraph and stenciling techniques.

Indian Ink Theatre Company is one of the true success stories of NZ independent theatre. They’ve toured the country and taken their heartwarming storytelling and beautiful performance craft to Edinburgh, Singapore and New York City. This season of Krishnan’s Dairy is revisiting the first story the company ever told.

Performers Tofiga Fepuleai and Eteuati Ete have been touring their live shows paying to packed houses throughout New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Islands and the US for the last nine years. Fobulous will see the return of your favourite Laughing Samoans characters such as Aunty Tala and Uncle Sam, as well as introduce a few new ones.

Experience the amazing site of hot air balloons ascending through the Waikato sunrise at 7.30am every morning and don’t miss Hamilton’s biggest night out at the ASB Nightglow at Waikato University, where the balloons glow to orchestrated music finishing with the best fireworks display in town.

A fan of the Steampunk movement? This is an event not to be missed! There’s everything from couture to hats, gadgets and curiosities. Enter the Steampunk fashion contest and parade, or visit one of the many wonderful stall holders, including Cog and Compass, Krakens Lair, or experience performances from acrobat Vanya Essin and musicians Alpine Fault.

Yoga Workshop with International Yoga Champ and all around flexi-guy Juan Manuel Martin-Busutil held at Bikram Yoga North Shore in Albany. This workshop gives context, presents demos, and provides an opportunity to test your understanding of Bikram Yoga. Class is included in the workshop price.

The giant Eggs-Travaganza Easter egg hunt is back in one giant cornfield. Over the four-days, the Easter bunny is running around hiding around 30,000 eggs in the maize. The mission is to find the bunny, find the eggs, and then find your way out of the 8km of paths in the maze. Good luck!

It’s almost a year since the re-opening of Zion Wildlife Gardens and to mark the occasion, they’re offering a special Easter weekend offer. You’ll some of the world’s rarest big cats, including tawny and white lions, white and orange Bengal tigers, cheetahs and a black leopard.

TRANCE-LIKE STATE

He started His Hollywood career in the mind-altering world of drugs, took a detour through indian’s slums before putting the heart-wrenching true story of survival against the odds on our screens. Going back to where it all began, Oscar award-winning director danny Boyle plays tricks with your mind in his latest offering Trance.

simon (Wanted’s James Mcavoy) – a fine art auctioneer – teams up with a criminal gang to steal a Goya painting worth millions of dollars. after suffering a blow to the head during the heist, he awakens to discover he has no memory of where he hid the painting. When physical threats and torture fail to produce answers, the gang’s leader Franck (Vincent Cassel) hires hypnotherapist elizabeth Lamb (rosario dawson) to delve into the darkest recesses of simon’s psyche. as elizabeth begins to unravel simon’s broken subconscious, the line between truth, suggestion and deceit begin to blur.

in tackling the material, Boyle saw a chance to update classic film noir themes – betrayal, moral uncertainty, sexual tension and the lurid instincts. He was also excited to bring a fresh take to

the iconic femme fatale, with the character of the beautiful hypnotherapist who proves to be every bit the equal of the men playing power games around her.

“i wanted to try and update the whole noir idea. i wanted to occupy that world, but in a modern context.” Boyle explains. “at the same time, because the mind is such an interesting thing for film to explore, we wanted to do a little walk-about around all these big questions about consciousness and unconsciousness and which is in control.

“You might think you’re in control of everything, but there are areas where you’re not. some part of you knows, but your conscious mind doesn’t know what you’re even going to say next! that fascinates me.”

as Boyle and screenwriter John Hodge began writing, they knew this story could not be constructed with a conventional, linear plot-line but demanded a kaleidoscopic structure revolving around the character of simon. they plunged deep into the disoriented, broken mind of a character, who not only cannot remember where he left the stolen Goya but also has no idea what so

urgently impelled him to hide it in the first place.

“danny and i wanted to have a kind of constant uncertainty for the characters as to what the truth is,” explains Hodge. “these three characters have to rely almost exclusively on what the others are saying or doing in order to figure out what’s going on.”

None of these characters are who or what they might seem at first meeting. these uniquely unreliable protagonists, each mired in the mysteries of identity, attraction and illusion, would require careful casting, but drew the kind of talented actors who hanker for complex roles right away.

“that triangle is a lovely dynamic to have in place as you can play with the question of which character the story belongs to,” comments Boyle. “the film certainly starts as simon’s story but by the end it has become more Franck’s – and elizabeth exerts a strong gravitational pull of her own.”

to delve further into the power of hypnotic states, the production hired Professor david Oakley, a clinical psychologist and researcher at the University

THE NEW MoVIE BY DANNY BoYLE TAKES A LooK AT THE DEEPEST, DARKEST RECESS oF HuMAN uNCoNSCIouSNESS.

College London, to act as the film’s consultant and expert.

One important element of the film is that of post-hypnotic suggestions, which are suggestions given to a person while under hypnosis that they are expected to act upon when they are in a conscious state. the research into this idea made the trippy nature of the story even more exciting for the filmmakers, as they were challenged to bring audiences into the unpredictable mindscape of a hypnosis hyper-responder – that five per cent who are highly suggestible and can reach the deepest, most vulnerable states of trance –via simon’s frightening and ultimately surprising experiences.

Boyle says, “Our story is fictional but we wanted it to have a grounding in reality. While elizabeth’s methods are not always ethical they are nonetheless clinically possible. For the five per cent of us who are highly suggestible – or ‘virtuosos’ as the experts say – that’s quite scary!”

i’m not sure i like Kerrigan. She’s a little disturbed. It seems there is no pleasing some people, lest of all the Queen of Blades. But maybe the fact that I don’t like her is an example of good characterisation, which is the mark of a good game, which means that... I like her. Curses! Damn you Blizzard!

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm is a revenge flick in space-drag. The second installment in the StarCraft sequel series, its angst-filled emo death romp is sandwiched right between the testicular fortitude of 2010’s stunning Wings of Liberty, and the presumed grace of Legacy of the Void.

It’s this narrative set up that drives most of the new material that we are presented with in Heart of the Swarm. It’s not the most sophisticated of tales, but it provides a solid backdrop to Kerrigan’s quest to reunite the swarm and once again take the fight back to Mengsk.

The way you progress through Kerrigan’s missions feels slow and muddled. There are two reasons for this; the first is that this expansion pack is introducing players to a new alien race — and with it, a new gameplay experience. The second is that Heart of the Swarm introduces a range of new units to the single player campaign. Some take a little getting used to, and the ability to make tactical choices about upgrades means that there can be a confusing mix of stratagems going at any one time.

What this results in is an early game that feels like handholding, and then an end game that lacks creativity, challenge, and depth of play. Stretched out over 20 missions, for experienced StarCraft players this is frustrating. However, this criticism can’t be taken too far. At its core, Heart of the Swarm is the same strategy experience that gamers fell in love with nearly 15 years ago.

Heart of the Swarm does not quite reach the lofty heights of its parent title, but it’s a decent follow up and a worthy entry into the Starcraft canon. Blizzard’s ambitious mix of classic strategic gameplay, excellent multiplayer, and emotional characters with anger management issues has raised eyebrows, but Heart of the Swarm provides starcraft fans with exactly what they wanted — and still leaves room for more.

This Easter, settle in for a four day marathon as MTV Classic counts down the Top 1000 All Time Classics. They’re digging deep into the vault to bring you the very best songs going around. Stars include: Bon Jovi, Queen, AC/DC, Michael Jackson, Cold Chisel, Madonna and U2. It’s a retro throwback that we know you’ll love.

Also known as where Ryan Reynold’s looks hot and meets his future wife Blake Lively – oh, and Temuera Morrison gets two minutes of screen time – the adaptation of the DC comic is an action-packed, comical ride. Cocky pilot Hal Jordan (Ryan) is recruited by galactic protectors to stop evil from destroying earth. Classic.

Join TV2 this Good Friday for a family movie marathon! Follow the adventures of a heroic mouse in Stuart Little and Stuart Little 2. Meet Molly Mahoney, the awkward manager of a strange and magical toy store in Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. The fun continues with comedy classic Police Academy and The Runaway Bride after the kid’s bed time.

So wrong it’s right for television. Imagine holding onto 10,000 dolls, a memorabilia collection containing hundreds of mannequins and buckets of his actual hair. Throughout the series, experts work to set each hoarder on the road to recovery, highlighting inner challenges and triumphs.

Go back to where it all began – somewhere over the rainbow. Based on the popular L. Frank Baum stories, The Wizard Of Oz follows Dorothy and her dog Toto after they are caught in a tornado and awake in the land of Oz. There, they meet a host of colourful and unusual characters, teaching her an important lesson.

Host Rob Dyrdek lights up the screen with his unique take on today’s hottest viral videos. Along with his trusted cohorts, Sterling and Chanel, Dyrdek comes up with some hilarious categories such as getting “Popcorned”, tripping in “Ghost Holes”, and stumbling into “Accidental Magic.”

It’s been just under a year since we last caught up with our favourite characters and the wait is over. Just hours behind its broadcast on HBO, it’s on our screens. While a primary focus continues to be on King’s Landing, stirrings in the North threaten to alter the overall balance of power in Westeros.

Introduced to a new school, introverted 15-year-old Charlie (Logan Lerman) finds solace in two welcoming seniors (Emma Watson and Ezra Miller). But when some harsh realities hit, Charlie must endure the trials of loss, love and his own shaky mentality.

Listen very carefully to what I’m about to say – this is not as good as the first movie. However, if you’d love to see Liam Neeson ass-kicking his way through more of Europe, there’s that. Taken 2 picks up two years after the events of Taken, and the daughter has learnt a thing or two.

Thunderbirds are go! Those world-famous puppets from the International Rescue Team are back with excitement and thrills, as they attempt to foil a plot to steal their fabulous fleet of rescue planes. Featuring the voices of Sylvia Anderson and Keith Alexander. There’s more mystery and more marionettes afoot.

Comedy cohorts Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) and Bridesmaids actress Melissa McCarthy star in this crime-comedy that sees a cross-country chase as a good-natured Joe is forced to hunt down the woman who stole his identity – before her shopping spree completely empties his bank accounts.

HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO

GI JOE 2: RETALIATION

thu 28 MAr NATIoNWIDE

it’s eVerY LittLe boy’s dream – sitting in your backyard, playing with your Gi Joes, playing out the fairytale of saving the world over and over again. For director Jon M Chu, his dream became a reality, given the keys to a multimillion dollar project and creative license to create his own happy ending.

“i was always obsessed [with GI Joe],” he explains. “i loved the first movie, but it wasn’t my GI Joe, the one that i grew up on, so when the opportunity came along [to direct the sequel], i jumped at it. i’m convinced i played with the toys so much that it’s where i fell in love with storytelling, with adventure, so this was a perfect full circle fit.”

GI Joe: Retaliation, the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster GI Joe: Rise of Cobra, picks up where we left off. this time, the team is not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra, but they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardise their very existence.

after director stephen sommers stepped away from the helm, Chu–whose credits include Step Up 2 The Streets, Step Up 3D and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never – was brought in as a new set of eyes and with a refreshed vision to bring the story of GI Joe: Retaliation to the big screen. Having worked in dance and music movies his entire career, he was a rookie to the action scene. But having been such a big fan boy of the GI Joe world, he had specific goals in mind of where he wanted the story to go.

“We’ve wanted you to feel the power of the punch, feel textures –the sand, dirt, sweat. We wanted to take the audience on a worldwide adventure – the way the cartoon took me as a kid and even the way the toys took me in my mind. But we also wanted to ground these guys, get down to what makes a hero.”

although it was a challenge to pick up where the previous flick left off, Chu says the writers

and he consulted with fans through social media to understand what they wanted to see. the informative sessions gave him affirmation for his direction and even affected decisions he made for the project.

One of the biggest changes after the 70 days shoot wrapped was converting the flick to 3d. after previously deciding this wasn’t an option, producers changed their tune when they realised Chu’s direction of movement and depth of field lent itself perfectly to leap off the screen.

“Our schedule was rushed, so i had to jump in and go. We thought the movie comes first, so if we can’t do 3d well, we won’t do it. But conversion is tough because it’s humans beings –it’s 700 artists, literally painting over 3,000 shots. You have to be present for six months and focused. so it was hard emotionally, physically, but my name was on the line so we wanted to do it right.”

Challenges aside, Chu says working on the project was “a dream come true” – especially working alongside heroes he had grown up with, such as the rock and Bruce Willis.

“i had the best master class i could hope for. it was a team effort and it think it shows that each actor had their own thing going on. Getting Bruce and the rock together, it was shocking – i would watch the monitor and forget that it was my movie. i’d be getting into the scene and then be like, ‘Oh shit, i mean cut, cut!’ My favourite bit was when we were filming with this big fish tank built behind them. it was like my childhood playing with my toy. i would pinch myself to be part of that tradition.”

what’s the ethos of your store/clothing line? Vintage with attitude. I like getting genuine vintage and taking it out of context. Cross-era dressing.

which historical figure had some wicked style? A great friend recently broadened my knowledge on Elsa Schiaparelli. She balanced avant-garde and elegance with the precision of an alchemist. She once collaborated with Salvador Dali. Her clothes changed fashion history forever.

what muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Currently none of them, they all hire stylists.

society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Chain stores. They breed insecurity, consumerism and disposable fashion.

what’s the must-have look this season? A dash of vintage. It never goes out of style and is a good investment. Get along to The Very Vintage Day Out on Saturday, April 13 in Alexandra Park this year. It’s where you can buy top-shelf key vintage pieces. Enthusiasts are on hand for beauty and styling tips if you need help incorporating vintage into your look.

what are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? A vintage tux jacket. Sometimes referred to as a smoking jacket. Dress it down with jeans. Class in spades.

what are the essentials for a lady’s wardrobe? A vintage faux fur leopard coat. Timeless glamour and a self-esteem rocket! Meow!

everyone should own at least one good... Novelty print. Men – shirt. Women – dress. You will wear it all year round. Again, you’ll find the best at The Very Vintage Day Out this April. Go.

how does this album differ from your previous releases?Probably the most significant difference is that part of the album was produced by Joe Henry. i’m a big fan of his writing and albums and love the work he’s done producing allen toussaint, solomon Burke, and others. i already had a couple of his songs i wanted to do and thought it would be great to call him and see if we might collaborate. turns out, he was thinking the same thing and when we finally got on the phone, that first call lasted over two hours!

what have you been listening to since your last album? how do you think bon iver, Kelly clarkson, and Adele’s covers of your songs have impacted your status with younger audiences?i listen to a lot of old school jazz and blues, african, indian and Celtic music and the scores of Cds and songs regularly sent to me for consideration on my new project.as for adele, Justin (Bon iver) and Kelly covering ‘i Can’t Make You Love Me,’ i couldn’t be more thrilled and honored. i’m a big fan of all three and really enjoyed connecting with Justin when they played a show in L.a. this past summer.

if you were breaking into the business today, do you think it would be easier or more difficult than it was 40 years ago?i think that without the vibrant network of coffee houses and the college circuit, and the fewer number of new artists that characterized the early 70s, it might be harder. that said, getting the word out through Youtube and finding new ways to build buzz makes it a draw.there are more inexpensive, populist routes to getting your music and image out through the internet and indie labels and blogs, but wading through the explosion of new artists from nearly format of music trying to break through is challenging.

on returning to new zealand…i have so many fans that stay in touch with me in between my tours in New Zealand, and we all really look forward to reconnecting. i’m excited to play the new songs for them and get to have time to explore these great cities and countryside. i only wish we could get to more cities and have more time off. But we’re all excited to get back and play these wonderful venues.

MiCHaeL KiWaNUKa’s HONeY drippin’ soulful vocals instantly win your ears over at the first verse. the BBC flatters him calling his voice a “rich, weathered instrument that appears to carry more tan his 24 years.” Yet despite the obvious comparisons to Marvin Gaye and Otis redding, Kiwanuka, by his own admission cannot really claim any Motown pedigree.

“i grew up in a house that owned no records at all,” the soft-spoken North Londoner explains, “and the first music i started listening to was the usual hardcore, grunge and skate stuff that my mates were into”. With Ugandan parents Kiwanuka’s early days in the very proper and well-heeled neighborhood of Muswell Hill “was probably the only black boy they’d ever seen - even on telly. so i really didn’t want to stand out”.

Keen to keep a low profile, playing music, as a black man, seemed a real cliché, one he was keen to avoid. Yet one day he came across a sampler Cd that came with a music magazine. “it was full of all kinds of old soul music. Plenty of really good stax, Motown and everything in between. i loved it.” From there he started exploring songwriting in general, especially that which was steeped in soul and folk traditions and took inspiration from Bob dylan, shuggie Otis, roberta Flack and especially Bill Withers.

early days on the London acoustic circuit paid off attracting interest and making connections with management and eventually landing his name on the desk of Communion records. in 2011 he released two ePs Tell Me a Story and I’m Getting Ready, both produced by Paul Butler (the Bees) using vintage equipment at the man’s basement studio in Ventor on the ilse of Wight.

“Yeah, you’re right,” he quips, “it does sound crazy; a black man making vintage soul with an english folk feel in a house in one of england’s most folk infested places. What can i say, that’s where we did it!”

His latest album, Home Again, is a compilation of those ePs and then some. the title track “ties everything together for me. Like resting and taking stock after hard work. it’s looking at your achievements. i like to tell stories and that is what inspires my songs.”

Given the mildly ecclesiastical themes in his music and the occasional inklings towards gospel, was he aware that he’s playing small church venues whilst he’s in aotearoa? “really, that’s the perfect link - Communion records, home, spirit. i’m the body, i’ve got the soul!”

Will it be Holy, Father? “Now don’t start on those trinity gags!”
