No strangers to our land, Alan Doherty and Gerry Paul
have performed here several times over the years with
the band Grada. Theyre joined on this trip by Tola
Custy, one of the most famous performers, composers
and recording artists Irish music has to offer.
Anthonie Tonnon and Watercolours has announced
a joint nationwide tour in July. Anthonie recently
reinvented himself as a solo artist and Watercolours,
aka talented Auckland songstress Chelsea Metcalf,

heading south for the rst time. Expect great things
from this talented duo.
Matt Langley and Lindon Pufn celebrate the release
of Matts second album Virginia Avenue, following his
2010 debut release Featherbones. One of the songs
won an APRA award which is kind of a big deal so

good friend and singer/songwriter Lindon Pufn.
Calling all Wellington friends of Mali Mali please

Hollywoodfun Downstairs teams up with Australian

Hailing from Dunedin, founding members Andrew
Wilson and Michael Prain cut their teeth in the live
music scene by playing in noise bands around town.
It wasnt until 2003 that they formed Die! Die! Die!,
but they already had the hard working DIY ethos that
continues even now. Their live act leaves nothing to
be desired, cos its so good.
At last, the US metal heads release their highly-
anticipated debut album after nearly a decade of EPs

rst-wave black metal magic and an extension into
harder-rocking territories rampant with lust, lth, and
sleaze. Supported by Kiwi acts Bulletbelt, Boltcutter
and Filthy Lucifer.

Ater eveloping a cult-likeunergroun status, Brooklyn-basepost punk inie rockers The Nationalhave risen well above the obscureepths they once lurke to behol
one o 2013s most anticipatealbum releases.
After delivering The Boxerand
High Violet to critical acclaim,
they cemented themselves as the
soundtrack of existential crises and
as a band who does self-deprecating
in a consistently awless, ethereal
fashion creating music that is
anything but litanic.
The National have a slow and steady,
somewhat subtle approach to
musical progression. To the passer
by it would not be unfair to say
that their work would blur into
one unfortunately dreary amblethrough the valleys of depression.
But for the y-on-the-wall, of which
there are many of, the moodiness of
The Nationals work is captivating,
enchanting and probably unhealthy,
their subtle evolution is masterfully
controlled and vividly pronounced
like any good hipster will tell you, it
just needs deconstructing.
Sixth album Trouble Will Find Me
lauded in high expectation is a
beautifully atmospheric and dense
continuation of The Nationals
catalogue. Their inuences Cat
Stevens, Roy Orbison and David
Bowie seep through. This album, although still heavily moody, feels
more buoyant and approachable
then their past work. Its like they
discovered the studio had a light
switch.
Dont be fooled though. Its an
interesting example of understated
intention, blowing about it threatens
to melt into the distance on rst listen
but as you give it the wall-ower
treatment all sorts of hooks, lyricalgems and audio abundance reveal
themselves.
Kicking off with lyrically languishing
track I Should Live In Salt is just as
lugubrious as the rest an articulate,
imagery lled revelation that
showcases vocalist Matt Berningers
abilities well higher than his usual
baritone drawl. The light wants to
shine in.
The album then bends off into
lead track Demons, a traverse in
soulful texture it emits comforting
warmth. Pace picks up a notch in
Dont Swallow The Cap as it secretes
tension, rumbling percussion
underpins a deep experiment in
eighties keys/synth and artful guitar
subtlety is their strong point and
Nevermind and Let It Be lurk in the
chorus lines. Fireproof is a tranquil
respite before the deep shit comes
out and tracks like Heavenfaced,
Graceless and Pink Rabbits rollick
off the depths of The Nationals
talent for literary, understated adult
angst that is both beautiful and
unpretentious.
WRITTEN BY JUSTIN FOWLER
Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Craig Terris is
currently touring his debut solo album Bleat Your
Heart Out. Hes mostly known for providing drums and
backing vocals, recording and touring with Cassette,
Samuel Flynn Scott, Luke Buda, Lawrence Arabia,
Bachelorette and Barry Saunders to name a few.
After the phenomenal success of their debut single
Little Pills, which has racked up 160,000 hits on
YouTube and mass airplay across The Rock, they
have been in huge demand nationwide. Devilskin are
looking forward to taking the Cabana by storm and
delivering a blistering rock performance.
Supporting progressive metal band Incarniums
Purgatoryalbum release tour. Created in early 2008 bya bunch of friends from a little place called Tat Norf
in West Auckland, the band has grown to command
an enormous stage presence with their signature
sound. Joined by Idyllic Foe, Team Kill, Checaine.
Hailing from the bedrock that is Sydney, this duo is
the fresh face of a generation. Three years ago saw
the beginnings of the What So Not journey into themusical unknown. Smelting sarcastic synth leads,
vocal transpositions and the ever-essential 808, the
two manipulated past and future to form their own
eclectic brand of dance music.
Every Tuesday evening in June, The Gramophone Band
perform music of a bygone era at The Portland Public
House. They play the sweet dulcet tones and the toe
tapping hits of the 1920s through to the 1950s. The
Gramophone Band brings a magical evening of vintage
music that appeals to both the young and the old.

When Fast & Furious 6 isnt very fast
and furious ie when the lm grinds
to a halt from thudding exposition,
groan-inducing comic relief andquestionable emoting you quickly
begin to realise that what made Fast
Five, the preceding franchise high
point, stand out was the element
of surprise from watching a series
smartly re-tooled.
Director Justin Lin had thrillingly
navigated the focus away from illegal
street racing to boldly preposterous
heist escapades, plus the addition
of Dwayne Johnson gave the cast a
fresh dynamic to bounce off. Furious
6 is essentially more of the same,
but as far as samey sequels go, its
not bad, with the action pitched at
hysterically overblown levels thatnow seem hard to reconcile with the
universe established in the rst lm
Nothing here quite tops the Rio-
demolishing climax of Fast Five,
where that sequence trod the ne
line between the possible and
impossible, but Furious 6 is happy
to tip the scale with two insane set-pieces worth the price of admission
alone. The rst sees a tank attening
cars with brutal abandon on a busy
freeway, which is then followed by
an enormous military cargo aircraft
being brought down on the worlds
rst never-ending runway.
Stitching the action together is a
nonsensical MacGufn-driven plot
featuring a forgettable rogue British
Black Ops dude (Luke Evans) hell-bent
on stealing a sought-after microchip.
New cast members Gina Carano
(Haywire) and Joe Taslim (The Raid)
add a dose of martial arts to the mix,
while returning old face MichelleRodriguez has to carry the burden
of an eye-rolling explanation for her
existence.

Over the last few years, it has become quite nerve-racking to listen to a
comeback album as many bands have attempted to incorporate modernsound and technique into their music with very varied rates of success.Black Sabbath fans, however, do not need to worry as 13 is a return totheir doom metal roots.
The three original members were joined on the album by Brad Wilk(Rage Against The Machine) on drums and legendary producerRick Rubin. The album was recorded live, just like the earlier ones.Although it is slightly over-produced in parts, it still has a raw, thickand menacing core.
Iommi explained, It wasnt quite like we did in the old days, it still wenton to the computer, but everything else was fairly like we did it wedidnt use a lot of tracks. It was very basic the whole thing.
Despite wanting to stay true to their old sound, Iommi did enjoy usinghis new Laney amps. He said, When we got to the studio there musthave been 15 different, old vintage amps that Ricks engineer had gotten. Itried them but I didnt like them! Because theyre called vintage it doesntmean to say theyre great you know, and they werent! So I didnt usethem and we sent them all back and I ended up using my Laneys.
The album opens slow and heavy with End of the Beginning. Anyreservations about Osbournes voice immediately disappear, as his voiceis crisp and clear.
He said, I kept the register of my vocals on this thing, so I could do themlive on stage because in the past I did what they call drop-ins. Id do averse and then Ill drop-in for the chorus and bring it all together and I
found it like difcult to do it live on stage so I have purposely, consciouslykept it at a range that is comfortable to do them live.
The song builds up before smashing into the rst single God is Dead. This is probably the most commercial song on the album, but it is inno way mainstream. The lyrics are relevant, relatable and beautifullyworded and there is no shortage of references to death and the devil.
Butler described his lyrical collaboration with Osbourne, Like the old
days Ozzy would come up with sort of the title and roughly what thechoruses would be or whatever the subject matter would be and then Iwould just ll in the rest. And four of the songs Ozzy did all on his own.
Butler then laughed as he adds, The rst thing that I said was, Im notdoing the lyrics. And Rick says Oh yes you are!
Although Bill Ward had originally intended to play drums on the album,Rubin made the decision to use Wilk instead. Iommi said, It just feltnatural to us a lot of drummers can either go with the bass or go withthe guitar and we always go with a drummer that can work with the bassplayer and a guitarist at the same time, and Brad could do that.
He then continued to say that Wilk was able to channel the same jazzinuences that Ward used. Brad had that same kind of swing. He
wasnt just a typical heavy metal drummer.
The midway point of the album reveals this softer and jazzier side ofSabbath. Zeitgeist is brooding and melodic, showcasing innovation andversatility. Doom lurks around the corner as the album winds down inclassic Black Sabbath style.
The guitars become deeper and epic while Osbournes haunting vocalslure you in. Osbourne commented, It has rounded it off really nice forme because when we broke up in 1978 I always felt like it was unnished
business this album is really great you know.
He is right as the customary gloomy church bells close the album, wecan be sure the Black Sabbath comeback will be a success.

i Mcw M, 20 a af aapcapc ca wa, fa c. The surace is a deadlywasteland. I the radiation doesnt kill you, the
mutants will. Beneath the ground, its not much
better. Survivors are split into actions, constantly
battling or territory, supplies, and weapons.
Its grim. But, it is also the perect setting or a
post-apocalyptic frst person shooter. And, ater
the success o 2010s Metro 2033, Ukrainian
developers 4A Games are ready to take us back
to the world o even neo-er Neo-Nazis, gas masks,
deadly air ries, and the mysterious Dark Ones.
I it all sounds hopelessly depressing, it is. And
Metro: Last Light brings it to lie brilliantly. From the misty, grey, crumbling, surace, to the
underground communities ull o desperate
people determined to carry on. Once the game
gets going youll be eeling the cold, fghting a
sense o dread and treating rie rounds and gas
mask flters like gold.
Within the world o Metro, the game plays like
your average shooter. Its all pretty standard FPS
stu, just with an added touch o dour realism.
There are no snappy one-liners when you take out
a guard. No yee-ha bravado, or man sized mini-
gun, when you stumble on a room ull o enemy
soldiers. In Last Light ater you kill a guard your
celebration is usually crouching in a dark corner,
checking you guns pressure and ammo, beore
sneaking out through an open vent.
Thats not to say you dont have a choice in how to
play. You can shoot everyone and everything i you
want, or you can play sneakily, creeping around,
turning o lights, and knocking people out.
Theres no health meter magically in ront o your
ace. No armour bonus or killing 10 enemies in a
row. I you all down in a swamp, you have to wipe
the mud away so you can see. And, i you run out
o ammo shooting mutants, their bodies dont
magically carry 20 resh shotgun shells to keep
you going.
Metro: Last Light is a hugely enjoyable game. It
is very European there is sex, violence, politics,
and some pretty weird mysticism. What it doesbest o all is establish and maintain a tone. It is
sad. It is hopeless. It is grim. Wonderully, thought
provokingly, and very enjoyably grim.

WHO IS THIS Gatsby? Its the question on everyones lips as they arrive athis lavish mansion. The Champagne ows excessively, diamonds light upthe night into the wee hours of the morning and the vibrant party scene is
nothing but a blur as partygoers drink and dance themselves stupid.
Much like the character of the same name, Baz Luhrmanns highly-antici-pated, opulent reimagining of F Scott Fitzgeralds novel, The Great Gatsby,is the very epitome of excess, of indulgence and living the dream.
With $13 million at his ngertips and an all-star cast of Hollywood heavy-weights not to mention creative input from Prada and Tiffany & Co whenit comes to the costuming the director has brought to life the RoaringTwenties from the modest pages of Fitzgeralds original work.
The story follows would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire)as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the springof 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, andsky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands
next door to a mysterious millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio),a man of many secrets.
The spending and luxury of the rich and young was something Luhrmannrecognised as a relevant theme now more than ever, and made a consciouseffort to both capture the zeitgeist of the era, but also give it a modern edge.
Fitzgerald, I think, sensed a fundamental crack in the moral fabric of the1920s, that things could not keep going up, up, up, as they were, couldntlast, says Luhrmann, and that felt very relevant to the global nancialcrash of 2008. It felt parallel. If I think about it now, this fact is what toldme I had to do Gatsby now and in this way. We came to New York becausewe had to be in New York to learn about and understand for ourselvesthose parallels of place, culture and mindset Jazz Age and today.
Luhrmann knew that, ultimately, the project would be pinned on the titlecharacter. He needed to nd an actor who could express Gatsbys corecomplexity, smile one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reas-surance in it, and then, in a ash, look as if he had killed a man.
Id been secretly working on it for some time, knowing all along whoId like to play Jay Gatsby. Really, it wasnt difcult to think of someone!
Hmmm, I dont know complex, romantic, dark, glamorous, great actor
DiCaprio, with whom Luhrmann had worked on William Shakespeares
Romeo + Julietwhen he was just 22 years old, was the obvious choice.
Gatsby is an incredible character to play, acknowledges DiCaprio. Ithink hes very much the manifestation of the American dream, of imagin-ing who you can become and he does it all for the love of a woman. Buteven that is open to interpretation: Is Daisy just the manifestation of hisdreams? Or is he really in love with this woman? I think that hes a hope-less romantic but hes also an incredibly empty individual searching forsomething to ll a void in his life.
Award-winning actress Carey Mulligan, who stars as Daisy, offers, Themain thing about Daisy is her duality. She wants to be protected and safeand live in a certain way. But, at the same time, she wants epic romance.Shes just swayed by whatever is the strongest and most appealing thing.Shes not a grounded person or a genuine person, in a way.
Leonardo was a constant partner in this search [for an actress to playDaisy], says Luhrmann. Leo said the most brilliant thing: You know,Ive been thinking about it Gatsby has had a lot of very beautiful womenthrown at him. Careys very beautiful, but shes also very unusual. Daisyneeds to be sort of precious and unique and something that Gatsby wantsto protect. Something that hes never experienced before. We looked ateach other and said, Its her.
Like his other works, Luhrmann says Gatsby is an entertaining and alsomodern story, and is hoping his audience will be as captivated by this taleas he was.
It has this fantastic romance, the world of the bootlegger, it has ash, ithas cash, but it also has violence and death and tragedy. Most importantly, underneath all of this it has complex, rich characters and deep emotion, passion and love.
